The view from outside the racquetball court during the 5th Annual Iowa State Wallyball Tournament in Eldridge on Saturday. The sport which got it's start in 1981 is similar to volleyball but lets players use the walls to bounce off of. Steven Fuhrman of Minneapolis one of the Minnesota founders of the sport said that clubs around the country have slightly different rules and he is working to codify the rules to be standard for the whole sport.

Elephant…in the Parking Lot

Viewers look at the newly revealed fiberglass elephant at the South Rock Island Township Hall. The elephant will be debuted at the local St. Patrick's Day parade. (I put this in here not for it's merit as a photo but because I found it absurd that they thought a $16K elephant was going to bring back a political party.)

Skate!

Jeff Oetzel, 16 has put in almost 10 hours of snow shoveling at Centennial Park Skate Park. On Tues. Mar. 2 Oetzel and friends ride and clean the snow so they can start riding on a regular basis. (I was out feature hunting and got a call to go to the skate park. In BG I'd trudge that way but Davenport doesn't know that PJ's use the skate park as a last ditch effort for a picture.)

(I was pretty happy with this image because I gave up on getting an action shot and decided to get crowd stuff. When I turned it in the sports guys just looked at me and said, "You got one with a player?" They said it wasn't usable because it wasn't a player.)

Reverend Drew Nagle of Rock Island prays before an Ash Wednesday meal at Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church in Rock Island. Nagle celebrated the beginning of lent with patrons with a meal of lentils and bread. (This is one of the more exciting assignments I've had since I got here.)

Margaret Grossman plays the piano during a hymn at Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church on Wed. Feb. 17. Ash Wednesday starts the beginning of the 40 days lent which ends on Easter on April 4.

Ian Sodanasser, 17 of Davenport belts out a solo during No Last Calls at show choir practice at Central Davenport High on Thurs. Feb. 11. Central will be performing at the Great River Show Choir competition on Feb. 19-20 at the Adler Center in Davenport. (I shot this last week and at first I was bummed, I was hoping for something like the TV show Glee but instead they stood and sang at a wall. But with a little time they started into the Facebook song and loosened up and I got something I kind of liked.)

Got to hang out with 60 kids and two gold medal swimmers today. Aaron Peirsol and Josh Davis taught local kids how to swim like and Olympian.
