As I held your hand,

I felt the last breath leave your lips,

Taking my tenderness with it.

Buried under emptiness,

I only prayed for the sun

To lovingly scorch my body,

So that I might be swept away,

Reborn as beautiful as I always saw you.

Every place I escaped to

Carried the echoes of your heart,

Deafening my soul

So that I might hear for the first time.

Suddenly,

I found myself

Scattered in free-fall,

Pulled through the Kosmos

And I saw you.

I saw you,

Everywhere,

In everyone.

And in that moment

I remembered that you were me,

And all that remained

“Love’s Invitation” – Top Ten, Best Screenplay. Boulder 24 Hour Shoot Out 2009

This weekend I shot my first short film with an amazing team of talented friends for the Boulder Shoot Out Festival. The film, “Love’s Invitation”, placed in the Top Ten and I won the award for Best Screenplay. I am so very honored and grateful to everyone on the team and everyone who gave feedback on the screenplay. A few quick notes about the film:

It was shot in 24 hours!
There was NO EDITING. You had to do “in-camera” editing, which basically means – shoot a scene, keep it or rewind the tape, shoot it again, move to the next scene!
We had to use 5 out of 11 possible items in our film, which we didn’t find out until the start of the 24 hours.
Had to be 7 minutes or less, including title and credits.
We didn’t do any post on the audio except the music and the voiceover.

Even without mentioning those parameters, I love our film as is. I hope you do too.

Shootout Boulder 2009

This weekend the lovely film crew I worked with on Sex, God, Rock ‘n Roll will be shooting a short film for the Shootout Boulder Film Festival. I wrote a short script that stars Stuart Davis and Hokai Sobol. We’ll have to adapt it a little when the festival starts tomorrow at 6pm. They have a secret list of items that must be included in your film:) Thankfully, you get to choose 5 out of 11, so we’ll have some options at least.

Other details on the festival: you can only do in-camera editing, which really means NO editing. And that means you have to shoot every scene sequentially. Once you have the scene, you move on to the next. No going back to redo, no fixing it in post, no multiple takes. We have from 6pm on Friday to 6pm on Saturday to shoot a short film no longer than 7 minutes.

In August I launched a new website, My Samadhi is Hot, but the first post only went up today, entitled, “You Might Be in The Dark Night“. I finally have come back to wanting to write about my spiritual practice and hope it will be of some benefit to others. Here’s a little about the site:

My Farewell to Buddhist Geeks

It is both with excitement and sadness that I announce my farewell to Buddhist Geeks, a project I co-founded with my close and amazing friend, Vince Horn, and for a brief, but wonderful time, with the lovely Gwen Bell. Let me say that “farewell” might be a bit too strong of a word. Yes, this does mean that I am no longer officially a part of Buddhist Geeks, but I am definitely staying close to it as an advisor, which Vince has so graciously asked me to do, and of course, my heart bleeds Buddhist Geeks So, I will still be very much “around” and keeping up with the developments of Buddhist Geeks.

Formally, I am no longer an owner of Buddhist Geeks and sold my ownership back to the company. This decision was very mutual and exciting for both Vince and I. It is allowing both of us to move strongly and more efficiently in the directions we are seeking. In fact, the timing couldn’t be better for me personally. As for me, I’m putting all my energy into film, as a screenwriter and director, as well as a freelancer in online media (until I’m full-time in film). I haven’t written much about my process, but will do so on this blog.

I discovered my love for film more fully over the last year and how much it allowed me to integrate all my talents, interests, and perspectives into one medium; a match made in heaven, so to speak. My contemplative, buddhist geeky path is very much a part of my art and writing, and I’m so excited to explore and express that through film. I hope you’ll join me and share in this new path that I have been cultivating, and of course, keep tuning into Buddhist Geeks!!
