Prescription running sunglasses are now available with a lens that is thinner than ever before. The lens allows patients with higher Rx’s to not have to worry about lens thickness limiting their frame options or style.

Prescription running sunglasses are now available with a new lens design that reduces lens thickness by up to 70%. This new lenticular design will allow athletes with higher prescriptions towear bigger wrapped sunglasses with a lens that is relatively thin.

ADS Sports Eyewear is one of the first companies to offer this updated version of the Free-Form Digital lens design. The curve in a free-form lens is recalculated at every point on the lens surface. This creates a much larger field of vision that is in focus and there is no peripheral distortion that is referred to as the “fishbowl” effect. This free-form technology made it possible to have amazing clarity in wrapped sunglasses but it did not reduce the thickness of higher prescriptions. This latest improvement is a free-form lenticular design where the correction in the lens does not extend all the way to the outer edge.  Most people can’t see this part of the lens so this has been a non-issue. This results in a lens that is 50% to 70% thinner.

Amby Burfoot won the 1968 Boston Marathon during his senior year at Wesleyan University, where he was teammates with Rodgers. After retiring from competition, he became a running journalist and served as the editor of Runner’s World magazine.  He has published multiple books on running and continues to contribute to Runner’s World.

Donn Cabral is an American cross country and track and field athlete from Connecticut who went on to become a running star at Princeton University. He is the current American collegiate steeplechase record holder and was the 2012 NCAA steeplechase champion. He competed in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in the steeplechase.

ALBANY, NY - The 35^th anniversary Freihofer’s Run for Women (FRW) 5K, set for June 1, 2013 at 9:45 a.m. in Albany, NY, will be another showcase of top national talent, including those who could very well become the future of American women’s distance running.

Leading the charge in the open division will be Michelle Frey, 31, (Minneapolis, MN), who finished a strongsixth place - making her the top American – at last year’s Freihofer’s (16:03). A seven-time state champion for Iowa City High School before earning All-Big Ten honors at the University of Wisconsin, Frey appears to have overcome a series of niggling plantar fasciitis and hamstring injuries.  She finished 22^nd at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (2:37:03).

Pushing her for the lead throughout will likely be FRW veterans Tera Moody (above), 32, (Colorado Springs, CO) andEsther Erb, 28, (Blowing Rock, NC). Moody continues to prove herself as one of the toughest American runners around having placed sixth at the Houston Marathon (2:39:10), second behind Mattie Suver at the GO! St. Louis half marathon (1:12:34) and 3^rd at last Saturday’s USA 25K Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. Erb, meanwhile, the fourth American finisher across the line at last year’s event (16:48), knows the Freihofer’s course intimately and will certainly use that inside knowledge to her advantage.

“Athlete recruiter John Tope has done another stellar job assembling a deep American field for our event,” said longtime FRW Event Director George Regan, noting that the women will vie for a piece of the $27,000 purse, $10,000 of which is earmarked for the winner.  “Any of these women has the ability to pose a real threat to the international field.”

BOULDER, Colo. - BolderBOULDER, America’s All-Time Best 10K, has announced  the men and women that will be racing in the2013 BolderBOULDER with teams USA and Colorado for the International Team Challenge.

The BolderBOULDER established the International Team Challenge in 1998 and it includes professional runners from all over the world that compete on three-person teams in a team by country format, for one of the largest non-marathon prize purse races in the country. This year’s total prize purse is valued at $110,600 before bonuses. The men’s and women’s professional races follow the BolderBOULDER course and are scheduled to finish just before the start of the Memorial Day Tribute.

(21-May) — Reigning world 5000m and 10,000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya has announced that she is pregnant with her first child and will be taking some time off from her athletics career.

“I am very happy to announce that I will take some time off from athletics this year as I am pregnant with my first child,” Cheruiyot said through a statement provided by her agent, Ricky Simms.  ”I have been running for many years and at 29 feel that now is the right time to start a family.  Unfortunately I will not be able to defend my World Championships 5000m and 10,000m titles in Moscow but I will be back for the 2014 season and the 2015 World T&F Championships in Beijing.”

Cheruiyot, who won the silver medal at 5000m and the bronze at 10,000m at last summer’s London Olympics, is coached by her husband, Moses.  She has won two world 5000m titles and the 10,000m once, but has yet to win an Olympic gold medal.  She said today that she is not done with her quest for Olympic gold.

“I have already spoken to some of my colleagues who had babies to get advice about when to return to training after giving birth,” she continued.  ”My long term goal is the 2016 Olympic Games in Beijing and to finally win Olympic gold.”

In addition to her medals, Cheruiyot is the Kenyan record holder for 5000m (14:20.87) and 3000m indoors (8:30.53).

(21-May) — The most captivating athlete currently competing in the United States hasn’t made any Olympic teams. She doesn’t get paid, can’t accept prize money, and isn’t affiliated with any shoe company at the moment. She can’t even take a sip of champagne to celebrate all the records she’s breaking.

Mary Cain, the 17-year-old high school junior from Bronxville, N.Y., is ready to continue her sensational season at two of the top American track meets remaining in the 2013 outdoor season: the Prefontaine Classic on June 1, and the Portland Track Festival on June 8. The Prefontaine Classic is the fourth stop on the IAAF Diamond League circuit, and the second in the United States.

Today, organizers for both meetings announced the Cain’s participation, who is coached by Alberto Salazar. At the Prefontaine Classic, Cain will take on some of the world’s best 800m athletes at historic Hayward Field, then a week later will race the 5000m roughly 100 miles north in Portland.

Cain, who was born on May 3, 1996, isn’t old enough to purchase a lottery ticket quite yet. But she’s hit the jackpot in training and racing this calendar year.

Indoors, Cain set high school records at one mile (4:28.25) and two miles (9:38.68), the prior being a national junior record. To cap off her indoor campaign, the gangly Cain earned her first national open title, defeating a field of professionals over one mile at high altitude in Albuquerque, N.M. Her time of 5:05.68 may not have been the fastest of her career, but the final 440 yard split of 59.1 was baffling to professionals and fans alike, so much so that “#MaryCain” began trending on Twitter.

Transitioning to the outdoor oval, Cain and Salazar haven’t missed a beat. Opening at the Drake Relays, Cain timed 4:10.77 for 1500m, another high school record. Not only was her time fast; she took down a pair of Olympians in Emma Coburn and Morgan Uceny.

Cain’s recent travels have taken her across America to California, where she’s set personal bests for 800m (2:01.68) and 1500m again (4:04.62). The latter came just last week at the USATF High Performance Meet at Occidental College in Los Angeles. There, Cain again broke national junior and youth records while achieving the IAAF World Championships “A” standard.

Traveling to Oregon for the Prefontaine Classic will be familiar for Cain. Last year, Cain raced the 800m at the U.S. Olympic Trials on the very same Hayward Field track, timing 2:04.11 and finishing fifth in her heat.

This time around, she’ll be facing an accomplished field which includes 2012 Olympic 800m champion Mariya Savinova, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Pamela Jelimo, current world leader Francine Niyonsaba, American Olympian Alysia Montano, and 2007 World Champion Janeth Jepkosgei. Rounding out the field will be Kenyan Winny Chebet, Russian Yekaterina Poistogova, and American Brenda Martinez, who ran 1:59.59 earlier this year in San Diego, defeating Cain by just over two seconds.

At the Prefontaine Classic 800m, Cain has a chance to eclipse the High School and American Junior record of 2:00.07, run by Kim Gallagher in 1982.

A week later in Portland, Cain will run the Team Athena 5000m, a distance she hasn’t raced on the track yet in her young career.

“The question of who could be the most exciting athlete addition to the Portland Track Festival came up at a recent planning meeting. Mary Cain was definitely a pick in this fantasy track draft. Starting back during indoor, discussion of Cain’s most recent race often served as an opening to actual planning at these meetings,” said Team Athena President Laura Devine in a statement circulated to the media. “It only seemed fitting that word of Cain’s plan to compete in the Team Athena 5k came just days after her 4:04 Oxy 1500. As a race organizer I am honored to have Mary Cain compete. As a track fan, I really can’t wait to be track-side while she does.”

The longest track distance Cain has run this year was two miles, where she ran 9:38.68 at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in February.

Both Cain and Salazar are confident heading into both races in Oregon.

“I told her she was capable of running under 4:05 this year, even down to 4:02,” Salazar told Flotrack.org shortly after the Occidental High Performance race. “Her races are way beyond her workouts.

“She does workouts you wouldn’t think could produce a 4:05, they’re not quite that good yet. But for her, they are,” Salazar continued. “I think she’s got a shot at making the [World Championships] team.”

Cain, as bubbly as usual and sporting the trademark ribbons in her hair, said she was happy with how races have gone thus far.

“Mentally I thought I could run this fast,” Cain said in a post-race interview. “Maybe I can run even faster, I don’t know!

Salazar told Flotrack.org that Cain’s racing schedule will include stops in Des Moines, Iowa, for the U.S. National Championships and on the European circuit.

B.A.A. Issues Special Invitation
