Physical Therapy for Rotator Cuff Injuries

If one suspects a torn muscle or tendon, physical therapy for the rotator cuff can have many benefits. A rotator cuff tear can be an excruciating injury to live with. The pain when trying to lift an arm leads to decreased activity for some people. Some people may have to limit their time doing hobbies or favorite sports. Fortunately, as part of a medically supervised treatment plan, physical therapy can help alleviate the symptoms of a torn rotator cuff muscle.

Physical therapy for rotator cuff is aimed at strengthening the various muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder. These muscles are made up of the S.I.T.S muscles. The supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis all help stabilize the shoulder joint as well as aid in some of the movements of the arm.

When a rotator cuff injury occurs, pain is experienced with movements such as internal rotation, external rotation, and abduction (lifting the arm to the side). Physical therapy aims to help strengthen the other rotator cuff muscles. When the other muscles are stronger, there is less need to rely on the torn one. Because of this, people experience less pain as more muscles help reduce the burden on the injured tendon.

The results of physical therapy are greatly improved by combining them with other treatment modalities. These may include cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications, and ice. When these various treatments are used properly and given enough time to work properly, then the patient usually experiences a gradual decrease in the number and severity of their symptoms. Pain is reduced.

More and more activities are tolerated and a more active lifestyle can be experienced without limitation due to unrelenting pain. Once physical therapy for rotator cuff has brought someone back to their baseline, it is important to reduce the chance of re-injuring these muscles. This can be done by proper strengthening exercises that further improve the function of the muscles. Video of Rotator Cuff Tear Surgery

Some people who have a torn rotator cuff do not respond to non-operative interventions such as cortisone injections, ice, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. Most people would agree that if possible it is best to try these options to avoid surgery if at all possible. In some cases, such as elite athletes with full tears, rotator cuff tear surgery may be the most appropriate option to deal with their pain and allow them to return to their normal daily activities.

There are surprisingly few good videos available online detailing the surgery involved when fixing the torn rotator cuff. The video below provides a good description of what is actually done when repairing such tears.

As you can see in the video example, the RC tendon is torn completely from its attachment to the humerus. The surgeon takes an arthroscopic approach and screws one or more pins into the bone. Then, sutures are used to securely attach the torn tendon back to the humerus.

This is a pretty quick explanation, but it does help people preparing for surgery to have a better idea of what is going on. Of course, there are different ways that surgeons may approach rotator cuff tear surgery and this video shows only one of them. Surgeons are willing to answer any questions one may have about a surgery before it happens so that the patient fully grasps what will happen to their body.

Rotator cuff surgery is not a quick fix to the injury. Patients still require physical therapy and rehab after to help rebuild the affected muscles and may need medications to decrease inflammation and pain. But, when necessary, this operation can really make a dramatic difference to the quality of someone’s life.
