Not very often do I get a chance to have a surprise from a complete stranger arrive in my mailbox full of amazing goodies just for me. So when I heard about the blog swap that <a href="http://sweetpotatoclaire.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Sweet Potato Claire</a> was hosting I thought it would be so much fun to send a gift to a very deserving Mama somewhere here in Canada and to have a little something come back to me as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTwOg_Pm3_I4KsYu5A8eyZXTAQxN8vXmzTwHFW0XAK3DeNShoNiodljTtl5dMl6Xae0VSqjqdb0UPPWaqOkcC5XyGqIun64BrsTjCgp-_eI3sYhZnI78pPrFLOGYoNqeno9yq8uVxxI0/s1600/Salves+&+Lotion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTwOg_Pm3_I4KsYu5A8eyZXTAQxN8vXmzTwHFW0XAK3DeNShoNiodljTtl5dMl6Xae0VSqjqdb0UPPWaqOkcC5XyGqIun64BrsTjCgp-_eI3sYhZnI78pPrFLOGYoNqeno9yq8uVxxI0/s1600/Salves+&+Lotion.jpg" height="265" width="385" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I couldn't have been more blessed by the package that I received today. As I opened it a wonderful aroma of lemon grass wafted out and inside the little polka dot pouch were three silver tins of healing salves and lotions. A lemongrass body butter, green tea healing hand salve and a lip balm. Each one made with organic oils and essential oils. Oh my how I needed the healing hand salve for my winter hands!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/13001907603/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Fingerless Gloves by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img a="" alt="Fingerless Gloves" gt="" height="480" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7404/13001907603_8309c6bb0e_c.jpg" width="385" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That wasn't all though. There was one more little package and inside were a wooly and warm pair of fingerless gloves. You know I have knitted similar gloves for my daughter, cousins and even my mom but I have never made any for myself so they are going to be well loved and used :)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.motheringwithmindfulness.com/" target="_blank">Thank you so much Kim</a>!! I am going to use every last drop of cream you gave me. You have truly blessed me with your thoughtful gift. <br />
<br />
Being that no one knows who they are going to get their goodies from I think it is safe to share on here what I made for the lucky Mama that I got. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
I have been a busy little girl sewing her a flirty apron...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQd2NOf9zHRlbQ3xug55ATaxlw9irsc4mEViirSSdmEAOUNr7lMEyY3P26va4ABfvEKzIhpX44ECHKdKOFWohHY6m6rRAVkei7VNBlUlp6vkVuxAefxUrYk1yo9Vyue7v1MmTZyISL8TQ/s1600/market+bag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQd2NOf9zHRlbQ3xug55ATaxlw9irsc4mEViirSSdmEAOUNr7lMEyY3P26va4ABfvEKzIhpX44ECHKdKOFWohHY6m6rRAVkei7VNBlUlp6vkVuxAefxUrYk1yo9Vyue7v1MmTZyISL8TQ/s1600/market+bag.jpg" height="400" width="348" /></a></div>
<br />
and one of my favorite burlap market bags with a little coin pouch. I sure hope she likes it :)<br />
<br />
Heard of any handmade swaps lately? I would love to know about them. <br />
<br />
Hugs,<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh how the days of this year's advent are flying!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My mom has been in the hospital after having had an operation and now that she has returned home only just a few days ago it feels like I can finally play a bit of catch up on my blog and share how our advent table is growing :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8279890402/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Forcing Paperwhites by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Forcing Paperwhites" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8500/8279890402_b0e68eeee4.jpg" width="307" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the second week of Rudolph Steiner's four kingdoms during advent it says:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>The second light of <span class="il">Advent</span> is the light of plants,<br />Plants that reach up to the sun and in the breezes dance</em>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So we filled our table with plants. I had purchased some paperwhite bulbs at a local garden supply store to force and found the white bowl at the dollar store. We then filled it with stones to act as anchors to hold our bulbs in place as they start to grow and to keep them just a smidge above the water in the bottom of the bowl so they won't rot. It's amazing how quickly they sprang to life and their shoots are already quite a few inches high!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8278818569/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Amaryllis by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Amaryllis" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8491/8278818569_b7ddf4aa5b.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I just adore Amaryllis flowers in the dark months of winter with their tall green stems and bright blooms the size of your hand so I splurged a little and bought one special bulb to plant for our table as well :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had seen somewhere on the web that they had planted their bulb in a tall vase to help support their long stems as they grow so I found a glass pasta jar and thought it would work. Perhaps not quite as pretty but more in my price range *grin*. We laid a couple of inches of stones in the bottom of the jar and then placed the bulb on top making sure that it had a little room around it so it wasn't quite pressed up against the glass, filled jar with water till the roots were submerged (about an inch below the base of the bulb) and then added a few ornamental red cranberries for more color. It won't bloom in time for Christmas but it sure will be pretty when it does :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8279822748/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Third light of Advent by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Third light of Advent" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8217/8279822748_bddf5f4d47.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tonight is the third week of advent and in the third week of Rudolph Steiner's four kingdoms it says:<em> </em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>The third light of <span class="il">Advent</span> is the light of beasts,<br />Light of hope that shines in the greatest and the least</em> .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8278762383/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Barn Animals by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Barn Animals" height="256" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8482/8278762383_2fbb091fdb.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And all of our barnyard animals have finally made their way to the crèche :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Up until now we had only had our little manger that the children have been filling with little bits of hay each morning and an empty crèche so they were very excited to finally pull out all of the animals that belong with our nativity set plus a few more that they rounded up around the house *grin*. Next Sunday we will bring Mary and Joseph out as well and then Baby Jesus on the eve followed by the three wise men as they visit with their gifts :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a few little crafts I want to make this week with the children to feed our feathered friends. Each year we pick a tree in the front yard that we can see from our family room window and fill it with all sorts of goodies for the birds and squirrels :) So this year I like this <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/18577417183393931/" target="_blank">apple treat feeder</a> and if we get enough snow we'll make some<a href="http://rosinahuber.blogspot.ca/2011/01/snow-sculptures-candle-light.html" target="_blank"> snow sculpture feeders</a> again<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/18577417184808194/" target="_blank"> and these are always fun</a> to make to :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
How about you, what are you doing this week?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hugs,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was still dark and I'm pretty sure I was in a deep sleep when the first footsteps came padding into my bedroom this morning to alert me that Saint Nicholas had come in the night and had filled their shoes with goodies. I think after that I may have even been covered in a few wet kisses and squeals of delight before I tried to sneak in a few more minutes of sleep instead of getting out of bed *grin*. That didn't last long as more footsteps followed and there was a special treat from mama to be prepared as well :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Saint Nicholas had been most generous and had stuffed their shoes to the brim with oranges and nuts, a couple of golden coins, a chocolate St. Nick figure...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and a little brown paper package for each of them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8250908015/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Mother Westwind by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Mother Westwind" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8338/8250908015_0931a918ce.jpg" width="392" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As the aroma of cinnamon and fresh bread filled the air we sat at the dining room table with hot cocoa to unwrap the little packages :) Last year the children received christmas themed books but this year I found some lovely classics for the older children.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8251983034/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Reading by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Reading" height="279" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8348/8251983034_d30f55d91b.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and a copy of a Magic School Bus book for M. He was thrilled to have a copy that he could call his very own :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After that things got mighty quiet as book pages were turned and mouths were filled with warm bites of the marzipan, almond and cinnamon kringel that I had made for the occasion :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The children must have all been very good this year because there was<a href="http://rosinahuber.blogspot.ca/2011/12/st-nicholas-eve-krampus.html" target="_blank"> no visit from the Krampus</a> thank goodness and Opa had a good time retelling tales of when he was a child in Austria and Sankt Nikolaus would visit his house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had made some special cookies using our <a href="http://www.joyofbaking.com/Speculaas.html" target="_blank">favorite speculaas recipe</a> and shaped them as Saint Nicholas but unfortunately my red gel icing didn't make them red but instead a deep shade of pink :( Oh well they still tasted delicious...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And were cute packed inside our little tins that were going to be dropped off as secret gifts to unsuspecting friends and family. You should hear the children giggle as they try to sneak up quietly to a house to ring the doorbell and then run away as fast as the can *grin*. I don't think they got caught once this year :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Do you celebrate St. Nicholas? I would love if you would leave a comment or a link to your blog letting me know what your family did today :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There was much anticipation as the children pulled out their wooden shoes for the arrival of Saint Nicholas tonight and filled them with carrots and hay for his horse :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have spent the last couple of days reading some of our favorite books like the <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Legend-Saint-Nicholas-Demi/dp/0689846819/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354779174&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Legend of Saint Nicholas</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Bakers-Dozen-Saint-Nicholas-Tale/dp/0590132849/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1354779313&sr=1-1" target="_blank">The Baker's Dozen</a> and of course we had to pull out our Veggie Tale movie of Saint Nicholas as well. It just wouldn't be complete without the veggies *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been sneakily collecting a few special books for their gifts in the morning and this year to make their gifts special I made these little wreaths with holly leaves. I just cut out a cardboard wreath shape and then used my hot glue gun to glue them all around the cardboard circle. Really easy and I think I'm going to make a bunch more for the rest of my christmas gifts :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I just love how they turned out and now I'm off to fill their shoes with nuts and other goodies before they wake up because I know they will be up before the first light of morning. There will be no sleeping late for mama tomorrow :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A few days ago I got an email with a reminder about the Waldorf craft fair that was happening today and a little teaser that there would be activities and singing for the children while we were there :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8236911492/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Rolling by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Rolling" height="313" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8344/8236911492_7350eee1ef.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we arrived we found that they had all of the classrooms set up as different little stations. There was one room full of all the wonderful bits and bobs to buy with playsilks, crowns, wands, felt playmats, candles, wooden toys and so much more. Then there was the craft room where the children took turns at the tables sanding and polishing wooden tree rounds for candle stick holders and then rolling sheets of beeswax to make candles for their holders. In other rooms there was singing, puppet shows, snacks and an enchanted cookie house where we went into a dimly lit space with twinkle lights while we were sprinkled with faerie dust and sang to while we picked out our favorite gingerbread cookie to eat :) So much fun!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8235777835/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Felt Advent Decorations by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Felt Advent Decorations" height="371" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8200/8235777835_7675f10140.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There just happened to be oodles of activities going on in the city today while we were there so we had a chance to go to the farmer's market, another craft fair where I got a funky burl candle holder and if we had stayed long enough we would have even been able to see a parade but I wanted to get home before it got to late and even so I ended up driving in the dark *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So after a late dinner and quick moment to put my feet up I realized that we had to get our advent countdown calendar out. I had nearly forgot that today was the 1st!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8235775833/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Advent calendar ~ Day 1 by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Advent calendar ~ Day 1" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8488/8235775833_e522109985.jpg" width="306" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Luckily I had saved the maple branch that we had cut and used last year so I retrieved it from its hiding place in the laundry room and brought out some ribbon to tie it up so it is now dangling beneath the mantle. Each day one of the children will be able to find a little felt ornament with the day's number needle felted onto it to be hung up on the branch as we count down the days until the 24th :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8236938536/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="New Candles by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="New Candles" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8348/8236938536_f4e265df76.jpg" width="208" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thank goodness no one seemed to mind that Mama was a little behind on the decorations this year *grin*. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We light one candle shining bright<br />Upon this Holy <span class="il">Advent</span> night<br />Fill our hearts with loving might<br />Lead us to Christmas Day's brilliant light!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i> - M. T. Schunemann</i></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love this time of year as our excitement for the Christmas season grows with each candle that we light :) </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This morning the children and I pulled out the box deep in the back of my closet with our advent candle holder and beeswax candles and brought it to the coffee table. We cleared off the miscellaneous school books that were scattered all over it so that we would have lots of space to set it up in its special spot for the holiday season where it will be joined in the coming weeks by our nativity scene and St. Nicholas.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8218677953/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Advent Week 1 by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Advent Week 1" height="363" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8348/8218677953_3525497d3c.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rudolph Steiner incorporates the four kingdoms into the four weeks of advent as well and for the first week he shares:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>The first light of <span class="il">Advent</span> is the light of stones,<br />Light that lives in seashells, in crystals and in bones.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So<em> </em>the
kids picked through their stash of favorite stones and shells and I
brought out the special hour glass crystals that were gifted to us
from a fellow waldorf family earlier this spring and for the bones we
thought maybe our dried starfish might qualify since it's just the
skeleton of it left<em> </em>*grin*.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8218680727/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Advent Week 1 by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Advent Week 1" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8200/8218680727_7daa86a13f.jpg" width="277" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our tradition is that the youngest child gets to light the first candle
and then the middle and so on so little M had the honor of holding the
match all on his own to light his candle tonight and then we turned out
all of the lights and sat under the glow of our <b><a href="http://www.rosinahuber.blogspot.ca/2012/11/celebrating-martinmas.html" target="_blank">star lanterns from Martinmas</a></b>
and watched the light of the candle grow as the wick burned down and
the flame grew larger. This went on for a little while until Hubby and I
were the last ones left enjoying one anothers quiet company :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em><br /></em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em> </em>Over the next couple of days we'll start to pull out all of our favorite Christmas books including <a href="http://www.joybookcompany.com/contents/joyproducts_celebratewithjoy.html">Celebrate with Joy by Sondra Burnett</a><em><a href="http://www.joybookcompany.com/contents/joyproducts_celebratewithjoy.html"> </a></em> which is full of inspiration on scriptures to read, craft ideas and ways to make Christmas even more special and our library wish list is overflowing with seasonal favorites. Each trip into town finds us with a few more that are waiting for us to be picked up and brought home. I think I might even grab a few paper whites to plant for next week's light of plants. I can't wait :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What are your plans for advent and the coming weeks? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hugs,</div>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8215141646/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Apple hand pie maker by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Apple hand pie maker" height="279" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8203/8215141646_824ef2c813.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whenever I have pastry made for baking I always have this urge to make little hand pies with it but I never follow through thinking it's going to be way to much work fiddling around with them. Not long ago though when I was grocery shopping I found this cute little mold for making apple shaped hand pies that would be just perfect for using with <b><a href="http://rosinahuber.blogspot.ca/2012/09/hello-fall-apple-picking.html" target="_blank">the apples we had left from picking</a></b> and I knew my daughter would love it to :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8214059173/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Apple Hand Pies by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Apple Hand Pies" height="272" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8337/8214059173_ee1b6c4800.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With our chilled pastry and floured rolling pins in hand we started rolling and placing our dough in the press.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8214060717/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Making Hand Pies by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Making Hand Pies" height="265" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8202/8214060717_2991f6098d.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why do these little things always look like they are going to make the job so simple but it's never quite so?! The instructions said to use the outside of the press like a cookie cutter to get apple shaped pastry pieces that you then laid inside with the filling and pressed together to make your hand pie. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course this totally didn't work when the pastry started to slide into the indentations on the inside of the press while needing the strength of He-Man to make the crimped edges show up. All this was definitely giving me flashbacks to a pierogi maker I tried using years ago that squeezed all of the filling into a doughy balloon that got stuck in the crack of the press making an awful mess *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Needless to say we tossed those instructions in the trash can! LOL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8215147052/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Apple Hand Pies by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Apple Hand Pies" height="314" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8057/8215147052_fc9009c387.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the end we just cut our pastry into rectangular shapes and layered them in the press with our sliced apple filling sandwiched in between and it worked out so much better :) L rolled and filled while I pressed them as hard as I could until we ran out of pastry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8214053913/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Apple Hand Pies by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Apple Hand Pies" height="289" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8206/8214053913_1975a4f3c5.jpg" width="380" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh my goodness were they delicious!!! We sprinkled a bit of cinnamon sugar on top before baking them and when they came out of the oven and cooled enough so that we could hold them they were nice and firm and the perfect treat for a chilly fall afternoon.... not sure how soon I'm going to attempt making them again though *grin*. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We finally got them all packaged up earlier this week and sent our box of goodies on their way down to the US and in a couple of weeks our box will make its way back to us full of new surprises :) In past years we have received beeswax candles & decorations, aprons with wood burned wooden spoons, playsilks in seasonal colors, gnomes, knitted animals and so many more wonderful things. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yesterday we celebrated Martinmas or St. Martin's day :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8180991037/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Lantern Walk by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Lantern Walk" height="380" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8060/8180991037_6e3e52db96.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wanted to replace <b><a href="http://rosinahuber.blogspot.ca/2011/11/martinmas-lantern-walk.html" target="_blank">last year's paper mache leaf lanterns</a></b> with some pretty new star shaped ones so we spent the morning cutting out our cardboard stars, gluing in yellow vellum paper to create the star shaped windows and adding wire handles so that we would be able to carry them on our lantern walk in the evening. They turned out beautifully and were perfect to go along with the special story I told them of needing a little home to keep Autumn's spark safely within during the dark and cold months :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As it grew dark and we had finished our dinner I had each of the children bring their lantern so I could place a bit of spark (LED candles) in each of their lanterns and off we went through the dark. It was pouring rain outside so we weren't able to go outdoors this year but instead we turned off all of the lights in the house and made our way from one end to the other a few times singing our lantern songs *grin*. So much fun!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We made a special recording of the song we used this year so that we could look back next year and I thought it would be nice to share it along with the words with all of you as well :) The original German song is called "Ich geh mit meiner Laterne" and this is an English version of it. (You will have to click through to my blog to see it if you are reading this via email)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me<br />Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.<br />The cock does crow, the cat meows, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.<br />‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.<br /><br />I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me<br />Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.<br />So shine your light through the still dark night, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom<br />‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I looked for the tune to sing it to I actually came across
quite a few versions but really liked this one and you can even find <b><a href="http://astorytellingofcrows.blogspot.mx/2008/11/i-go-outside-with-my-candle-lantern.html" target="_blank">a video that shows the sheet music to go along with it here</a></b> :) The other song that we sang was <b><a href="http://youtu.be/R3zRxjBIaqo" target="_blank">"Glimmer Lantern Glimmer" and you can hear it in a video here</a></b>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The sunlight fast is dwindling,<br />My little lamp needs kindling.<br />Its beam shines far in darkest night,<br />Dear Lantern, guard me with your light.</div>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144010395/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Halloween Dinner by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Halloween Dinner" height="265" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8044/8144010395_090c7978cb.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After two days of secretive planning and preparations it was time for our annual Halloween party tonight and when it comes to gross foods I aim to please *grin*. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been trolling the internet looking for new creepy foods to make and this year's menu consisted of <a href="http://www.celebrations.com/content/gruesome-gourmet-brain-dip" target="_blank">brains</a>, <a href="http://shockratorium.com/pages/halloween_food.htm" target="_blank">cockroaches, turds</a>, a rotten cheese log (blue cheese & cream cheese with a touch of green food coloring)....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144048990/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Monster Mouths by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Monster Mouths" height="280" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8050/8144048990_26a1306329.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
monster mouths which are just chocolate chip cookies cut in half with a little bit of red icing, marshmallows and almond slivers for fangs.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144046974/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swamp Water by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Swamp Water" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8183/8144046974_b55e207ba1.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and swamp water which is a favorite of ours and is an orange juice spritzer with a touch of grenadine to darken up the color with black sanding sugar and twizzlers as garnish :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144048334/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Pumpkin Dip by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Pumpkin Dip" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8465/8144048334_6a1327ffbf.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/18577417182429647/" target="_blank">pumpkin dip on pinterest</a> and it is to die for!! Oh my goodness is this good :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144045656/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Worms for Dessert by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Worms for Dessert" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8050/8144045656_2378c9fe8c.jpg" width="265" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course every Halloween party has to have at least one food item that is totally over the top disgusting and this year my <span class="st">pièce de résistance was a <a href="http://www.theidearoom.net/2009/09/jell-o-blood-worms.html" target="_blank">worm dessert</a> that I named the 'Nightcrawler Parfait' *grin*.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="st"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144043590/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Worms for Dessert by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Worms for Dessert" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8464/8144043590_d88a5ec67b.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You wouldn't believe how life like these things were! You make them in straws with the accordion necks so they get that ribbed center just like a real worm and they were cold and rubbery like they were actually alive. If you looped them around in the dish they actually moved and untwisted. Eek.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made all of the children close their eyes when I brought the dishes of them to the table and then when they opened their eyes you should have seen the look they each had as I proceeded to tell them that they were fresh from the compost bin LOL. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8144042852/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Nightcrawlers Anyone?? by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Nightcrawlers Anyone??" height="315" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8476/8144042852_a32ce5c2fe.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not one of them would eat them!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was absolutely hilarious to see them turn a little green as they poked around at them in their bowls. My dad who loves a good joke grabbed a handful of the worms and stuffed them in his mouth so they were hanging out with some of the cookie crumble dirt hanging from them while the children looked at him in disbelief :) In the end they all picked them off of the pudding beneath except for my oldest son who managed to eat some of his but it wasn't an easy task *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You know it was a great Halloween party when you make something that no one wants to eat!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hugs,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rain started again today so I'm thankful for those few short hours that we did get to explore outdoors. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have so many things to be thankful for these last few days. Many of you probably heard about the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook many parts of BC. We felt it here and in the aftermath it put all of the northern BC coast along with the northern part of our island where we live on a tsunami advisory. My husband who was at the time even further north was tied up at one of the marinas and emergency service crews got them to higher ground in the event that there was a tsunami but thankfully there wasn't one. So many communities up and down the coast from Alaska to Hawaii were on pins and needles as no one was sure of what to expect so I am so thankful that amazingly there seems to be very little damage for those families that were closest to the epicenter of the earthquake and that everyone that was evacuated is safe. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was if anything a wake up call to be more prepared. Our family has practiced earthquake drills, where to meet if we have to escape from our home and we have supplies on hand but I think we can do more. They tell you to be prepared for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency but we're remote, rural and just a tiny blip on the radar when things happen. Winter storms take out our power regularly and we are always far down the list for repairs which at times have been longer than 3 days so when I think of what sort of destruction that earthquakes have caused in Haiti, Christchurch and the tsunami in Japan I'm not sure that 72 hours will cut it. How about you? Do you have your emergency kit ready just in case?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My thoughts and prayers are with those of you on the east coast tonight as you hunker down while hurricane sandy passes through your towns.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hugs,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yesterday on the lawn of the legislature in Victoria there was a giant rally against the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project and the gigantic tankers that want to invade our coastline. People from all over BC and even Canada joined together, 4000 strong, to voice their opposition, their concerns and to send a strong message that our coast is not for sale! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately it was to far from home to attend but tomorrow, October 24th, in communities all over BC protesters are ready to converge on MLA offices far and wide to continue the 'Defend Our Coast' movement and we are going to be there.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have literally been going through canned salmon withdrawals ever since I used the last jar in the pantry months ago so when I caught wind that one of the commercial fishermen we know was heading out for an opening I phoned right away and put in my order :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sockeye and pinks are my salmon of choice but this year they were so scarce you were really hard pressed to find any so I went with chum. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As each fish was brought out to be cleaned the children took part in a bit of an anatomy lesson... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
learning about their teeth, gills, organs and more :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hubby wasn't home for the first batch of fish that I brought home from the dock so I got my oldest son to help with some of the cleaning and then I took over cleaning the last of the fish and filleting them with my dad. That made for a long day as I had to go in the house after to fill the jars and then pressure can them all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thankfully he was home yesterday when I brought home 8 more whoppers! They weighed about 12 pounds apiece bringing our total to 13 fish total. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This time I just had to wait for the fillets and trimmings so I could take them in for canning. So much less work!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Poor hubby had a bit of a sore back though from humping over his table all afternoon so we're definitely going to have to do something about that for next time. To make up for it he snagged six of the nicer fillets for smoking...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and today he has them smoking away. Mmmm, I can't wait *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So with 55 pints of salmon all canned and ready for putting away in the pantry I can officially say I'm done. Until next year that is :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
October 1st was the first time I had to light the woodstoves to take the chill off of the air in our home and we awoke to our first hard frost of the season yesterday! The lawn was crispy and white and all of the water buckets for the cows and chickens had a layer of ice locking in the fresh water below. All of this cold weather has definitely left me yearning for warm comfort foods :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been building up a little <a href="http://pinterest.com/rosy_posy/" target="_blank">recipe cache on Pinterest</a> which is where I found a yummy recipe for <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/18577417184314135/" target="_blank">sweet potato gnocchi</a> but I didn't have all of the ingredients on hand so I took a chance and remixed the recipe a bit and it turned out delicious!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8061717429/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Sweet Potato Gnocchi by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Sweet Potato Gnocchi" height="267" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8174/8061717429_fc4c22d3cc.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In place of the ricotta cheese I used one egg, subbed in 1/2 a cup of asiago cheese instead of the parmesan, reduced the salt to 1 tsp. of sea salt in the dough instead of the two she called for and I baked my sweet potatoes in the oven for about 45 minutes at 400 degrees fahrenheit instead of microwaving them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now this was my very first time making gnocchi so I had no idea how sticky the dough would be but I found that I needed to use at least 4 cups of flour to get my dough to be workable and not crazy sticky but the original recipe only called for 2 3/4 cups. So I'm thinking my sweet potatoes were much larger than hers but you'll definitely know if you need to add more flour *grin*. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8061760790/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Sweet Potato Gnocchi by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Sweet Potato Gnocchi" height="250" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/8061760790_da17e5023d.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With my dough all ready to go I got busy rolling out dough snakes, chopping them into little bite sized pieces with my pastry cutter and then rolling them around with the tines of a fork to give them the little indentations in the photo. Nobody told me how many little gnocchi this recipe made though!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I kept cutting and rolling and cutting and rolling...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
until I had two giant cookie sheets full of them plus more all over the counter. On my final count I had over 200 of them so they all went into the freezer except for the ones I kept out for dinner and we're all stocked up for a good while now I think :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids aren't real big on the taste of sage so I omitted the sage butter that went along with the recipe as well and instead made an easy sauce with basil and homemade chicken stock. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 cup homemade chicken stock</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 tbsp dried basil</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 tbsp arrowroot powder</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 tbsp onion powder</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
salt & pepper to taste </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mix all of the above together in the cold chicken stock and pour over two carrots cut into matchsticks, two cups of broccoli florets and 3 cloves of pressed garlic that have been sauteed until just tender. The arrowroot created a nice thick sauce just perfect for our fresh gnocchi to be coated in. Mmm, mmm good. Now if only there were leftovers *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hugs,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So many wonderful things have been happening this month!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yesterday was the celebration of Michaelmas and we have all been looking forward to it for weeks. We've been reading all sorts of dragon stories, our favorite being<a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Knight-Dragon-Tomie-dePaola/dp/0399207074/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1349062483&sr=8-2" target="_blank"> The Knight and The Dragon by Tomie dePaola</a>, and the children have been re-enacting the stories with the felt dragon and knight that make up part of our nature table this month :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8041720785/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Michaelmas Dragon by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Michaelmas Dragon" height="290" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8042/8041720785_873e4b99d5.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this cute <a href="https://pinterest.com/pin/18577417183694844/" target="_blank">dragon craft on pinterest</a> that we just had to make to *grin*. When you blow through the paper tube the streamers blow up like the dragon is breathing fire. It was a hit with my 6 year old and the added touch of googly eyes made it even more fun for him as he attempted to make the dragon make silly faces as he blew fire :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8041690728/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Speed Peeling by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Speed Peeling" height="268" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8029/8041690728_fc46e9aa12.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With all of the apples we had we saved a special basket of them for making a pie to go along with dinner and the kids made light work of all the peeling for me with this great little peeling gadget that peels, cores...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8041394261/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Apple Spring by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Apple Spring" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8174/8041394261_019ca8e39d.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and slices all of the apples into uniform pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8042157427/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Munching on Apple Peelings by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Munching on Apple Peelings" height="285" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8181/8042157427_6bc0ba21a0.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not one part of the apples from our trees went to waste except for
maybe the core but even then the chickens got those. L has a serious addiction to peelings LOL. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8041711550/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Apple Blackberry Pie by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Apple Blackberry Pie" height="265" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/8041711550_643a63f157.jpg" width="380" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the apples peeled and sliced it was time to make pie and legend has it that after Michaelmas you shouldn't eat fresh blackberries so of course we had to add blackberries to our apple pie which made it all the sweeter :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8041729383/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Michaelmas Dragon Bread by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Michaelmas Dragon Bread" height="261" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8176/8041729383_bedd445a2e.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had to time it right to get all of our baking done before the roast chicken had to go into the oven for dinner but we managed to bake the pie, sculpt and bake a ferocious looking dragon and even make a set of bread shaped swords to go along with dinner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8041714349/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swords for St. George by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Swords for St. George" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8313/8041714349_6d1454fafc.jpg" width="260" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This year I wanted to make our dinner extra special so we had my parents over and just before we ate I had everyone raise their bread swords and we recited the following poem.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Brave and true will I be,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Each good deed sets me free,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Each kind word makes me strong, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will fight for the right,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will conquer the wrong."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since St. Michael is the saint of courage I thought this was perfect. I found it on one of the waldorf yahoo groups I'm on and don't know who to credit the poem to so if you happen to know where this is originally from I would love to know.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So after a little mock sword fighting with our bread swords we ate heartily and enjoyed the company of family :) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Did you celebrate Michaelmas? I would love to know what you and your family did :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hugs,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fall is definitely settling in for an extended stay :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The leaves are turning beautiful reds, oranges and golds, the mornings are cool and crisp, even the evening fog that creeps through the fields at dusk has reappeared but the real highlight is that the apples are finally ready!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With our baskets in hand we made our way down the lane to the apple trees that my dad has been tending for over a decade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why is it that the best apples are always out of reach :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
who was waiting below hoping to fill up his basket first :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the really hard to reach apples my dad has this really great tool that has rake like prongs on the tips to catch around the stems of the apples and then it pulls them off the branches and they land gently on the foam pad inside the basket :) So much better than trying to shake them off of the tree *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The children waddled home under the weight of their apple basket with giant smiles on their faces and thoughts of all the ways that we were going to be able to eat them.</div>

<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was sure that the last time we packed up and went home from the lake it was going to be a final goodbye to summer swimming and late nights in front of the campfire but the warm weather beckoned us to come out and play again and who were we to say no *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/8010078182/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Class at the lake by Rosina Huber, on Flickr"><img alt="Class at the lake" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8318/8010078182_e621f4c07a.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The forecast was for non stop sun so we quickly packed all our clothing and as much food as we could find in the fridge and raced out to the lake in hopes of finding a spot right on the beach. I think a few of the older campers were a little confused though to see our three children tumble out of the backseat when we hit the campsite. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Public school had already started a week before but the freedom of homeschooling blesses us with the opportunities to travel whenever and wherever the wind may blow us :) That's not to say that we weren't doing any learning while we were away though! Our oldest son is in grade 8 this fall so we packed along his core subjects and the two of us worked on his lessons as the water lapped towards our toes and the wind ruffled our hair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Being surrounded by nature gave us ample opportunity to study science through observation and discussion as we explored the parts of dragonflies found floating in the lake....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
studied the quirky habits of the squirrels all around us as we watched them chatter, play, and gather seeds they stuffed into the hollow holes they had made in the cedar trees. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We made a little art in the form of posters notifying the squirrels just where to find the tasty pinecones we had collected for them... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and collected specimens that the children begged to bring home. I'm not sure that a crayfish would make a very good pet though and had to gracefully decline the invitation to add him to our family LOL.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I wouldn't allow Mr. Crayfish to come home with us he was turned into a scary sea monster that needed guarding by the hoards of playmobil men that seem to travel with us everywhere. That was until he escaped :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The days were so warm that the children spent most of their days in the lake swimming and playing and even Hubby braved the water and joined in with the splashing and jumping off of the swim dock.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nine years old!!! Oh my how I remember her chubby little cheeks as they drooped down over the white swaddling blanket that the nurses handed her to me on the day that she was born. She was so tiny and she shocked us all with her jet black hair that covered her head *grin*. No longer does she have that black hair but she has replaced it with locks down to her bottom :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last year I made her a big rainbow layered cake and a few days before her birthday this year she mentioned how it was her favorite cake so I thought it would be fun to make it again but I didn't want it to be a repeat of the last one. So I made mini rainbow cakes using <a href="http://www.whisk-kid.com/2009/08/say-it-with-cake.html" target="_blank">my all time favorite recipe</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One for each of us and it was so much fun to see her smile from ear to ear when she got her very own. They were more work than I had anticipated and they gave me a little grief as I tried to ice them while they swayed dangerously from side to side like they would topple over but the end result made up for all of that. So cute :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are all nuts about sushi around here so on the morning of her birthday L and I worked together to create a huge platter of california rolls, crunchy rolls, ones filled with smoked salmon and more to share at her birthday lunch :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We actually had to fend off some sneaky snackers that wanted desperately to sample our sushi before it was time *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My mom made some amazing little salmon bites that she topped with a dill sauce and capers...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and I had fun creating these fruit kabobs shaped like flowers :) Who knew miniature cookie cutters could do such a great job and I speared the skewers into an upside down half of a watermelon which provided the perfect sturdy base for all of the kabobs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The day couldn't have been any better as the sun shined down on us while we ate lunch in the garden :) We played croquet, had fun trying out her new hula hoop...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and you've got to love her fashion sense LOL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sneakers and a dress.... at least she left her gumboots at home this time *grin*. </div>

The lazy days of summer are winding down and I'm looking forward to transitioning back into our regular rhythm and picking up our school books again :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have packed our days full of camping, exploring, playing and enjoying the special moments that summer provides with nights spent on the beach in our cozy camper, collecting buckets full of shells and other treasures that I know we'll find a use for somehow, watching little ones fall asleep in front of the campfire and become brave little swimmers at the lake, trips to the aquarium and special dinosaur exhibits, watching our baby calves grow and making wishes on every dandelion gone to seed in sight.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A post of my current read and what is cast on my needles ~ Inspired by Ginny over at {<a href="http://www.gsheller.com/" target="_blank">Small Things</a>}</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/7688503902/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Yarn Along by Crafty Nature, on Flickr"><img alt="Yarn Along" height="265" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8433/7688503902_2f148b7b35.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was hoping that I was going to have at least one completed<strong> </strong><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/RosyPosyy/lepidoptera-socks" target="_blank"><strong>Lepidoptera sock</strong></a> to share with you but when we went camping just after last weeks yarn along I forgot to bring my pattern! Oh I was so disappointed :(</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not for long though. I still had a ball of yarn and a bunch of needles so I just sort of played around trying out how to knit cables. I'm not sure if I was doing it correct but I definitely got the cabled effect that I had been hoping for and all was not lost as I sucked up the amazing scenery and lounged at our oceanside campground while the kids played in the water :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For my book this week I had finished Eating Dirt which was sooo good and I spent the week perusing magazines and especially enjoying my new copy of the Living Crafts magazine. Hopefully next week I'll have something much more interesting to share with you *grin*.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy knitting!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finally feel like it's that time of year to pick up knitting needles again and found this great lacey <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/RosyPosyy/lepidoptera-socks" target="_blank"><strong>sock pattern called Lepidoptera</strong></a> :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had bought this soft alpaca yarn earlier this spring thinking it was going to make a great baby sweater for my sister but alas she had a little boy and the pink was definitely not going to do! So into the yarn stash it went until last weekend when I finally found the perfect use for it. A soft pair of socks for my daughter. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/7647976424/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Yarn Along ~ Lace Sock by Crafty Nature, on Flickr"><img alt="Yarn Along ~ Lace Sock" height="309" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8004/7647976424_a8a62a9462.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And she is just itching to get her feet into them! We are constantly having little 'try on' sessions and I haven't even got one sock half finished yet LOL. It's a super easy pattern though. Nothing tougher than making a few extra stitches and it has my all time favorite heel to... short rows. Yay!! If I can avoid doing the regular heel flap type sock heel I will and in this pattern she simplifies the short row process even further by taking out all of those yarn overs that you normally find making it faster than ever and there is a video tutorial to go along with it so you can follow along if you happen to get stuck.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For my book I'm reading <span id="btAsinTitle"><a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Eating-Dirt-Forests-Timber-Tree-Planting/dp/1553657926/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1343276220&sr=8-2" target="_blank"><strong>Eating Dirt: Deep Forests, Big Timber, and Life with the Tree-Planting Tribe by Charlotte Gill</strong></a> and it is a must read!! It's the true story of her life as a tree planter here in BC for 20 years and was absolutely fascinating to read about areas right here in my backyard and get a peak at what their lives are really like as we see them so often around this neck of the woods and I must admit I've always wanted to know more about them. Her writing transports you instantly into the thick of the BC rainforest and leaves you wanting more :)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span>I'm looking forward to seeing what you all have been knitting and reading this week to!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span>Happy knitting,</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our Canada Day weekend was spent camping :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hubby packed up our trailer along with the two boys and headed out to the lake to meet his parents while L and I stayed home so that we could attend my sister's baby shower on Saturday and then join them the following day. When we arrived at the lake on Sunday they had everything set up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/7495555268/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Ahoy by Crafty Nature, on Flickr"><img alt="Ahoy" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8424/7495555268_58dcaf8b43.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The boat had been carried down to the waters edge and they had been enjoying rowing it around when the water was calm enough. It got quite windy at times creating to many waves so in between the rain showers and windy bouts they would jump into their life jackets and dash in and out :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/31149239@N07/7495572188/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Railway Ties by Crafty Nature, on Flickr"><img alt="Railway Ties" height="272" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7122/7495572188_841da78694.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids had fun hunting for old train rails and spikes that they played with while we were there. In the past the logging companies used to bring their logs right down to the lake where they were dumped into the water. In fact quite often when we travel this way we will see the loaded trains full of logs being shuttled in and out of the forest as they still move them by train today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course we couldn't have a Canada Day without any sort of fireworks! To our delight the neighbors let off a few...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and the kids had fun waving gigantic sparklers around in the dark :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope you all had a great Canada Day and to all my lovely American friends I wish you a wonderful Independence Day tomorrow!</div>
