Fall can be a wonderful time for enjoying your yard. All of your hard work throughout the summer leads to a thick, lush and beautiful lawn in the fall that is perfect for hanging out with the family. However, there are a few maintenance steps that you can take during the fall months to make sure your lawn is adequately prepared for the winter. Follow these three tips and you can count on a beautiful lawn returning after the snow begins to melt in the spring.

1. Fertilize Now to Help Protect Against Crabgrass -

It's an unfortunate fact of life that crabgrass seeds will always be present in your soil. When spring arrives, these ugly, grassy weed seeds will be germinating in lawns all over your neighborhood. Your lawn service provider can make it harder for crabgrass to grow in your lawn with a pre-emergence treatment next spring. But to give your turf an even better head start in fighting off stubborn crabgrass, fall fertilization will make a huge difference.

Fall fertilization has many advantages. In the fall, top growth slows down in your lawn as your grass plants start focusing on building up their root systems and nutrient reserves. These reserves will be used for new growth when spring arrives. Providing your lawn with larger doses of fertilizer in the fall fits perfectly with nature's normal cycle. Your lawn will make more efficient use of fertilizer in the cooler autumn weather than at any other time of year.

The three primary nutrients in fertilizer each serve a specific function. Nitrogen is used in large amounts to promote color and top growth. Phosphorus stimulates root development. And potassium helps grass plants to resist drought, disease, and retain water.

Fertilization during the fall season is crucial for turf growth, and a heavy application of a professional, slow-release fertilizer will provide your lawn with a wealth of benefits. When fertilized in the fall, your turf will be less susceptible to disease while exhibiting improved recovery from the stresses of summer heat and drought next year. In addition, fall fertilization will lead to earlier, richer greening in the spring.

And best of all, fall fertilization will lead to a thicker lawn.   A thick healthy lawn provides the best natural weed control by not allowing room for weed seeds to germinate and grow.

2. Aerate and Overseed Your Lawn this Fall -

The wear and tear of another hot summer left your lawn in need of a makeover? If so, schedule your lawn for fall core aeration.

Though it sounds like a complicated procedure, lawn aeration is really a very simple way to rejuvenate your turf. During the process, lawn care professionals will use an aerator to remove plugs of soil from your lawn. This will break up root-choking, compacted soil, creating pathways through which air, water and fertilizer can more easily travel to your turf 's roots. As a result, the roots will be able to grow stronger and deeper.

After the plugs are removed, they'll be left on the surface to dissolve on your lawn during rainfall and watering. Eventually, they'll mix with the thatch layer to help it decompose and break down. This will make it even easier for moisture, oxygen and nutrients to reach your turf 's roots, and will help to discourage harmful insects that tend to make their homes among thick thatch layers.

Overseeding is also encouraged after the aeration is complete.  The aeration opens the soil allowing the seeds to make contact with the soil and therefore increases their chances of germination.  The dissolved plugs also leave a fresh layer of soil on the surface creating an improved seed bed where the new seedlings have a better chance of staying moist and thriving.  As with any new seeding it is important to keep the lawn watered after an overseeding.

Overall, lawn aeration is one of the best things you can do for your lawn. The benefits of the process are many, and include:

- Improved turf / grass rooting
- Decomposition of harmful thatch
- Better penetration of moisture, oxygen and nutrients through the thatch layer
- Decreased water run-off for improved drought resistance
- Growth stimulation in old lawns
- Improved turf/ grass resilience

With fall lawn aeration, your lawn will be able to take advantage of good growing weather as it puts down deeper roots for the coming winter and spring seasons. Plus, core aeration can be made an even more powerful growth tool by combining it with over-seeding and fertilization.

It is important to note that aeration cannot be performed on all lawn types. Please contact your landscaping professional or lawn care specialist for more information.

3. Remove Leaves Before Winter  -

It's great to have big shade trees in your yard. They add to the beauty of your lawn, which also adds to the value of your home. Unfortunately, come fall, you can start to resent them. Those big trees drop tons of leaves and that means extra work, hassle, and lost time.

It is important to remove leaves and debris from your lawn prior to winter as they will cause bare spots when spring arrives. In addition, removing the falling leaves from the lawn allows your lawn to absorb the winter sunlight. But how can you save yourself the hassle of constantly raking leaves?

A recent study done at Michigan State University shows that you can forget about raking, blowing, and bagging leaves. Instead, just mulch them with your lawn mower it'll save you work, improve your soil, and add nutrients. Since you should be mowing your lawn in the fall anyway, this will save you time and effort that can be spent enjoying your yard.  Of course, if your lawn has many large trees causing a thick layer of leaves, some may need to be removed to ensure that the mulched leaves work their way down to the soil level.

One of the most important things to consider when you are planting a rose is the location. This can really determine whether or not your rose is going to flourish and be filled with flowers. When choosing rose planting locations, you want to find a spot with good drainage that gets a lot of sun, preferably full sun. �Make sure that your new rose will have plenty of space so that it can grow without being crowded. You don't want your rose to be exposed to a lot of wind though either, so take care and choose just the right spot for your rose.

Another concern with rose planting is the soil. You want it to have the proper nutrients and drainage, as well as the right pH level (around 6.5). If your soil isn't just right, you can amend it by mixing the required nutrients into the soil that you plan to put back around your rose bush.

Once you have chosen your site, prepare your rose for planting. If you have a bare root plant, you should soak it in water overnight to rehydrate it before planting. Some people recommend putting a small amount of bleach (one cup per five gallons water) in the water that you use to soak the plant in order to kill off any harmful microorganisms that might be present. Bushes that come in a pot of soil do not need to be soaked.

Dig a hole for your rose that is a bit bigger than the pot that the rose is in, or bigger than the plant that you have. You will want to put back a cone shaped pile of soil so that you can put your new plant in at the right depth and spread the roots out a bit. The correct depth for planting really hinges on where you live. The union should be one inch underground if you live in zones five or six, at ground level if you are in zones seven or eight, and above ground if you live in zones nine or ten. Fill the hole in with the rest of the soil.

Make sure that your newly planted rose bush gets plenty of water, but not too much. This type of plant really prefers to get less frequent but deeper waterings. Water them about once a week with enough water to make the soil wet about ten inches deep. Wait until the soil is dry before you water the plant again. Too much water too often will make it so that the plant does not have enough air circulating near the roots, so it is important to avoid making this mistake. When you follow these simple steps for rose planting, the results will be beautiful rose blooms.

When you have lived as many places as I have, you begin to appreciate the importance of establishing your boundaries.  Because so many of us have relegated ourselves to subdivision living, the need for a good fence has exponentially increased over the last 15 to 20 years.  This fact is especially true when living in urban and suburban areas.  It never ceases to amaze me how real estate developers have learned to cram so many houses into so few acres.  The difference between the average lot size of the 1970s as compared to those of today is difficult to comprehend.  Even higher end homes seem to be being built closer and closer together.  Maybe I am crazy, but if I'm going to spend $500.000 on a home, I expect to have some breathing room.

A few years back, we were living in a subdivision where the homes on each side of us were about 15 feet apart from ours.  Keep in mind, these were good sized new homes.  But this neighborhood was typical of so many being built today in that we were allotted one little tree strategically located directly outside the sliding glass doors at the rear of the house.  A few shrubs were planted out front, but the yard was hastily created and thus very spotty and uneven.  Only later did we start finding out that all the construction trash had been thrown into the back yard, plowed under, and then seeded over.  Granted our lot was actually larger than most in that neighborhood.  We had a whopping ½ acre to roam on.  But this was not nearly enough for me.  This reality was reinforced one afternoon while I was mowing the grass.

I was born and raised in the rural mid-west.  So I decided I would bless my neighbor by cutting a couple rows of their grass along our shared property line.  I figured that they were clearly too busy to stay on top of keeping their own lawn neat and tidy, so I would just help them out a little bit. This turned out to be a big mistake.  Apparently in the more urban areas, this is not considered kosher.  Within a few minutes of putting my lawnmower away, I heard hammering in the side yard.  I looked out the window to see my neighbor pounding rebar stakes into our property line about every 10 feet.  She proceeded to connect the stakes with kite string.  Clearly this impromptu fence was the best she could come up with on such short notice, but the message was as clear as crystal.  I had unknowingly assaulted her domain.  By the way, those silly stakes were still there when we moved out a couple years later.

We now live on about 10 acres surrounded mostly by woodland, but I must admit, my neighbors still bug me on occasion.  I guess the older I get, the more space I need.  That being said, if you are currently in a housing situation that is cramping your style, the addition of a privacy fence may be in order.  I have found that, more often than not, your neighbor will appreciate the sentiment rather than resent it.  They probably want to get away from you as much as you do them.  In turn, this will allow you to enjoy your neighbors company when you want to, and not when you have to.  If you need help finding a good fencing company in your area, try using the links listed below.
