Here's a piece that I'd started Friday evening and finished Saturday just before the Zombie Engagement party / Halloween art show opened. This piece is 16"x20" (plus frame) colored pencil on gatorboard. It's a personal favorite of mine now and I hope it'll be one of yours as well. My apologies for the pitiful photography. I use a digital point-and-click camera. As always, click on the photos to see them larger.

"Brother, Can You Spare Some Brains?"

"Brother, Can You Spare Some Brains?" is my latest piece. This one is 16"x20" (plus frame) colored pencil on gatorboard. This is my largest piece to date. I will have this piece (and others) at tomorrow night's "Zombie Engagement Party" at The Bar Standard (1037 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203). The show starts at 8pm and goes until 2am. I, and many other artists, will be doing some live art during the show. Come in costume and admission is $5. No costume is $10 to get in. 15% of sales will go to benefit The Rocky Mountain Cancer Research Center Foundation and the Sox Place. Come out, have a good time and help these good causes.

Bride of Frankie colored pencil piece

I did this new piece during the Ultimate Horror Weekend show for Dirk Strangely. I swapped him for some of his prints. I think we each felt we got the better deal. That's always a good way to go. Until he sends me a good scan of the piece, here's a photo that I took of it. I didn't do the best job with the photo. I'm sure the scan will look better.

Ultimate Horror Weekend

Here are a few shots of my table from the show. I sold a few things and met a lot of great people. As you can see, my cousin Melissa stopped by to hang out with me for a little while. Her daughter Amanda and Amanda's boyfriend Matt were also there. It was great to see them all.

I had the pleasure of seeing Ghoultown perform. I also caught part of Psychocharger's set. Both were killer. Really diggin' Psychocharger's CD.

Overall the show was good for networking but not for sales. It's always good to show my work to those who've not seen it before. I was disappointed that more of the celebrities didn't find time to walk through the vendor room. I think the only celebrity (beyond the bands performing) that I got to see was Bill Hinzman. He introduced Ghoultown and then was cool enough to hang out for a few minutes and take photos with a few people in the audience. I didn't respond quickly enough to get a shot with him myself unfortunately. Hopefully I won't be so brain dead next time.

I picked up prints from my new friend Dirk Strangely and pendants from the incredibly talented and cool Zombie Head. Check 'em out. You'll dig 'em too!

Yep, I'm now calling them Monster Sketch Cards instead of Horror Sketch Cards. That's because I've done a couple of aliens from science fiction films. Anyway, I've completed another 10. Here is the first of 2 batches for your entertainment.

This batch includes the Crypt Keeper, the girl from the Ring, slasher from Scream, Quasimoto, and Nosferatu. Hope you enjoy them!

Baron Samedi

Here's a new painting that I just finished for the "Voodoo" art show at Luxe De Vil Salon at 657 Santa Fe in Denver, CO. This is an acrylic painting on an 11"x14" cradled wood panel. It's 3/4" deep and I've painted the edges to continue the image.

If you'll be out for First Friday please stop in and check out what looks to be a very cool show. I'll be there (at least for a while) and am looking forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces and making some new friends.

"Lazy Eye" sketch

For your viewing displeasure, here's a sketch that I worked up last night while waiting for my son's roller hockey game to start. This is colored pencil on black paper (Strathmore Artagain 9"x12" paper). I have to say that I really enjoy working this way so expect to see a lot more of this style.

Additionally, I did a bit of work on the Baron Samedi painting yesterday, getting a lot of the base color work down. Busy weekend ahead so I'll probably not finish it until early next week.

"Reapin'"

"Reapin'" is a new painting that I'd started a couple of weeks ago but got sidetracked (by paying work and my desire to try a new technique). I just finished this piece this afternoon. This grayscale acrylic painting is approximately 11-1/16"x15-1/16" (scan cropped to 11-1/16"x15") ... on Strathmore illustration board. Hope you enjoy it.

I had another artist (that I'd met today at Jonesy's Art Bazaar) suggest to me that I might like working on black gatorboard with color pencils ... since I enjoyed doing the "Frankie" and "Larry" pieces on dark paper. So I got some black gatorboard and put this together this evening. This piece is approximately 10"x16". I think I like it. What do you think?

Here's another colored pencil drawing on dark paper. I used black paper this time instead of the dark gray. I like the contrast a bit more. I finished this earlier this morning while my computer was processing some large files. The first image has been adjusted. My drawing ended up looking a bit stretched (see the second image) so I squeezed the bottom of the image a little in Photoshop. I think you'll agree that Larry looks better that way.

"Frankie"

This is a new piece that I did last night. While in San Diego, I got to watch another artist (Mario Alberti) doing sketches on a dark brown paper, using black sharpies and correction pen. I really enjoyed the effect he was getting ... using the paper as the midtone. I'd not thought of doing that before. I finally got around to getting a pad of grayscale paper and some decent colored pencils. This is my first attempt at drawing the "light" part of the image onto a dark surface.

This first image has been adjusted to get the dark gray paper closer to black. I prefer this contrast. The second image is closer to what the piece really looks like.

I also started a Wolfman piece that I'll post later tonight or tomorrow (once I finish it). That one is on a black piece of paper.

WWJC Shirts

A friend of mine talked me into printing up this design that I put together months ago ... she didn't have to twist my arm too much. This evening I'll be pulling shirts for her. She's ordered 2. I'm doing one for myself to wear to Spooky Empire's Ultimate Horror Weekend show and I'm doing a half dozen more to sell at that show. If you like what you see and are interested in getting a shirt, write me with your size, let me know the shirt color you'd like (a dark shirt is the requirement since I'm printing white onto the shirt ... guess I could also do bright pink ink if someone wanted that), and send me $15 via paypal (I'll figure out shipping if you're in the continental US).

I'll bring some of these to Jonesy's Art Bazaar too!

Horror Sketch Cards 2

Here's the second batch of 5 horror sketch cards. The previous batch included Frankenstein's Monster, The Mummy, Edward Scissorhands, Dracula and The Bride of Frankenstein. Batch 2 includes The Wolfman, Phantom of the Opera, Creature from the Black Lagoon, robot from The Phantom Creeps, and Chucky!

These will be appearing with me next month at Jonesy's Art Bazaar (9/19/09) and then (if not sold) at Spooky Empire's Ultimate Horror Weekend (10/9-10/11/09) in Orlando, FL.

These cards are 2.5"x3.5" Strathmore Illustration Board (precut artists' sketch cards) and are rendered with pencil, ink, marker and correction pen. Each will be priced to sell at $10 and comes in a clear plastic sleeve. Plans are currently to do around 50 of these.

Please let me know if you have a favorite monster that's not yet been included in one of these 2 batches. 40 more to go!

Horror Sketch Cards

I'm working on a large batch of horror sketch cards. These are 2.5"x3.5" (like a baseball card or garbage pail kids card). Each one is an original piece of artwork that I very quickly put together using pencil, ink, marker and a correction pen (for white effects). I'll be bringing these to art shows and conventions. I plan to offer them for the low sum of $10 each. They're rendered on Strathmore Illustration Board (Vellum finish) and will each come in a transparent plastic sleeve to keep 'em free of fingerprints, etc.

Feel free to comment. More to come as they're completed.
