School is on break, people have time off from work, so what are they doing with it? Maybe last minute shopping, or nothing at all. Well over at Canyon Velo, in the Cycling world, several of us have been making good use of our precious time off. The week before Christmas, on Monday it was a century ride to south Orange county and back through Santiago Canyon. While we were going through Laguna Hills, we started talking about all the riding we should be doing this winter break. I happened to mention doing a ride to San Diego and everyone wanted to do the ride. So we did! It was a great ride and a beautiful day for riding! Then on Friday we rode down the Santa Ana River Trail to Sunset Beach for breakfast and back. I got about 70 miles from that. Saturday of course is the club ride. By mid week I realized I could put in 400 miles this week, so Saturday I finished my week off with a 90 mile ride.
Christmas week was a little lower key for me. I mostly did shorter 25-35 mile rides. But Bob had the idea to do a "Long Steady Distance" fat burner ride. We rode down to the end of Camp Pendleton and Back through the OC. That was a long day. We didn't hammer, just a steady pace. It was over 7 hours in the saddle, plus 2 more hours of stop lights and short breaks. I haven't spent that much time on the bike in a long time.
Thursday the club rode down to San Clemente again, but I didn't have time that day.
Saturday we reaffirmed a bicycle term. As cyclists that race and ride and train hard, we never do a slow ride, only a Relaxed pace ride. That's what we did Saturday. And we really enjoyed it. We were able to enjoy the scenery through live oak Canyon, and some of the fastest riders noticed homes and landmarks they'd never seen before.
Racing bikes is great, it's filled with adrenaline, excitement, goals and rewards. It motivates us and for many the driving force to ride bikes. But for me and many others I'm sure, it's these long relaxed, scenic rides, with my friends, second family from Canyon Velo that I enjoy the most. Call it a reward for training hard for races that allows us the enjoyment of these great rides.
That's why I ride!

Research suggests that vitamin B6 is important for proper neurotransmitter functions. It may also help in preventing mood disorders, such as depression. For an easy vitamin B6 fix, add banana slices to your breakfast cereal. In fact, according to Julie Miller Jones, PhD, a nutritionist and advisory board member of the Grain Foods Foundation, gluten-free diets often lack a host of nutrients typically found in whole-grain wheat products such as vitamins B and D, calcium, iron, zinc, folate and magnesium. And because cyclists rely on the carbohydrates found in many wheat-based foods to pound out miles, it's important to know if you're a good candidate to go gluten free, or if you should just keep digging into that linguini.

Read full article:

Gluten-Free Diet for Cyclists | Bicycling Magazine

Commonly used pesticides, such as organochlorines, are stored in our fat cells then released into our bloodstreams when we burn fat, disrupting the function of our mitochondria (our cells' energy-making furnaces). In a 2004 study published in the International Journal of Obesity, researchers at Canada's Laval University reported that dieters with the highest levels of organochlorines had a greater metabolic slowdown as they lost weight than their peers with lower levels of the pollutant, likely because the toxins hinder the energy-burning process. Other studies have indicated that pesticides may actually contribute to weight gain.

Read full article:
The Perils of Nonorganic Food | Bicycling Magazine

Are they going to crumble underneath of its rider? Seems like todays technology is allowing for lighter, but just as strong of a bicycle. As the 14.99 lb limit stands now, teams have so much leeway to customize their ride because every component is super light. Cannondale has a 12 lb bike. Now they can add heavier wheels or pedals and cages to comply with the limit, but that's the same frame. If it's a matter of safety, they need to reevaluate how they define the weight limit.

Read full article:
VeloNews » Analysis: Eliminating the UCI bike weight limit is overdue

DeNoon
WebMD Health News
Reviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD
April 20, 2011 -- The 10 most prescribed drugs in the U.S. aren't the drugs on which we spend the most, according to a report from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics.

The institute is the public face of IMS, a pharmaceutical market intelligence firm. Its latest report provides a wealth of data on U.S. prescription drug use.

Continuing a major trend, IMS finds that 78% of the nearly 4 billion U.S. prescriptions written in 2010 were for generic drugs (both unbranded and those still sold under a brand name). In order of number of prescriptions written in 2010, the 10 most-prescribed drugs in the U.S. are:

· Hydrocodone (combined with acetaminophen) -- 131.2 million prescriptions

· Generic Zocor (simvastatin), a cholesterol-lowering statin drug -- 94.1 million prescriptions

· Lisinopril (brand names include Prinivil and Zestril), a blood pressure drug -- 87.4 million prescriptions

· Generic Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium), synthetic thyroid hormone -- 70.5 million prescriptions

· Generic Norvasc (amlodipine besylate), an angina/blood pressure drug -- 57.2 million prescriptions

· Generic Prilosec (omeprazole), an antacid drug -- 53.4 million prescriptions (does not include over-the-counter sales)

· Azithromycin (brand names include Z-Pak and Zithromax), an antibiotic -- 52.6 million prescriptions

· Amoxicillin (various brand names), an antibiotic -- 52.3 million prescriptions

· Generic Glucophage (metformin), a diabetes drug -- 48.3 million prescriptions

· Hydrochlorothiazide (various brand names), a water pill used to lower blood pressure -- 47.8 million prescriptions.

The 10 Best-Selling Drugs

It shouldn't be a surprise that these generic drugs are not the ones bringing in the big bucks for pharmaceutical companies. The drugs on which we spend the most money are those that are still new enough to be protected against generic competition.

The IMS reports that Americans spent $307 billion on prescription drugs in 2010. The 10 drugs on which we spent the most were:

· Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug -- $7.2 billion

· Nexium, an antacid drug -- $6.3 billion

· Plavix, a blood thinner -- $6.1 billion

· Advair Diskus, an asthma inhaler -- $4.7 billion

· Abilify, an antipsychotic drug -- $4.6 billion

· Seroquel, an antipsychotic drug -- $4.4 billion

· Singulair, an oral asthma drug -- $4.1 billion

· Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug -- $3.8 billion

· Actos, a diabetes drug -- $3.5 billion

· Epogen, an injectable anemia drug -- $3.3 billion

U.S. Prescription Drug Use: 2010 Factoids

Who's paying for all these drugs? Commercial insurance helped pay for 63% of prescriptions, down from 66% five years ago. Federal government spending through Medicare Part D covered 22% of prescriptions.

For Americans covered by insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid, the average co-payment for a prescription was $10.73 -- down a bit from 2009 due to increased use of generic drugs. The average co-payment for branded drugs for which generic alternatives were available jumped 6% to $22.73.

Other facts from the 2010 IMS report:

· Doctor visits were down 4.2% since 2009.

· Patients filled more than half of their prescriptions -- 54% -- at chain drugstores, possibly because of discounts on generic drugs.

· Brands that lost their protection from generic competition led to $12.6 billion less spending in 2010 than in 2009.

· The price increase for drugs without generic competition led to $16.6 billion more spending in 2010 than in 2009.

· Drug companies offered $4.5 billion in rebates to assist patients with the high cost of brand name drugs for which there was no generic alternative.

· SOURCE:
· IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics: "The Use of Medicines in the United States: Review of 2010," April 2011.
· © 2011 WebMD, LLC. That is a great result.

As to the ride, Charlie, Paul Leek and I lined up for the 100 mile ride at the very front of the staging area. We looked back down the staging area to see Kevin, Paul Roe, Brett and Sue back about thirty riders (it seemed that there were a couple of hundred for the 100 miler). We waived to them to come up to join us, but to no avail. Paul Roe came up to take a photo of us, but said that the others liked their spot and so we just prepared to depart ourselves.

Once the ride started, we were on the front. When we got to the Gerald Desmond Bridge, some guy tried to go off the front like it was a KOM. I decided to make sure that didn’t happen so we (Paul, Charlie, & I) chased – caught & dropped him. Looking back from the top of the bridge, that effort pretty much destroyed the peloton. We continued to drive over the Vincent Thomas Bridge as well.

Once on the other side, we saw that there was a group of about 8 riders that formed into a chase, so we decided to let them back since there was over 90 mi to go. We picked up another 20 before we hit Anchovy street, at about mile 18 (a half mile “wall”). Paul, Charlie, and I got to the top of the wall with one other guy, a 24 year old club rider from Monrovia. We decided that it was not time to drive, so we continued to pick up riders as we went tempo through Palos Verdes.

Every time it went up hill, one of us or the kid was driving the front and the rest would drop, except one youngish Japanese guy from Torrance (didn’t speak much English, but was strong).

We shed the last of our passengers except the kid and the guy from Torrance a couple of miles before the switchback climb.

From the top of the climb all the way until Bolsa Chica on PCH the five of us stayed together, taking turns pulling.

At Bolsa Chica wetlands we were driving it fast (25 mph) with a crosswind. The kid and Mr. Torrance were dropped there in the crosswind.

Charlie said that the kid was pretty surprised to see what three old guys could do to him in the cross wind.

We just continued along at tempo and they later caught back when we were waiting for a long time at an intersection with a rent-a-cop doing traffic duty.

We rolled into the Queen Mary at 5:14 riding time.

It was a nice workout. We enjoyed a nice lunch, but did not see anyone else before leaving.

Commentary on the 100 mile course: The first 50 were just like last year’s 60. There were quite a few stop signs approaching the port after mile 50 and then when we turned onto the last 40 miles there seemed to be a hundred (hyperbole) stop signs in Long Beach and Seal Beach. It was like doing intervals. Once we got onto Seal Beach Blvd the course was fine until getting back into Long Beach. The final couple of miles were on the Long Beach bike trail in the middle of the day on a warm Sunday… lots of traffic.

To see the route and the like, the web-page is
www.diabetes.org/tour-shiptoshore

Canyon Velo Web Page
http://canyonvelo.org/
