In an email to supporters this weekend, Campaign manager Corwin Bliss explains the political landscape and who the new villains are: bankers, people who donate to Democrats and of course, “the complicit media.”

Bliss explains the problem:

– It’s the “fat cat campaign contributors” behind Murphy.

– It’s Webster Bank President Jim Smith, “one of Murphy’s strongest campaign supporters.”

– It’s the “complicit media” that refuses to explain how Murphy’s house foreclosure lead to a  $400 million government loan to a bank.

And now, for the winners and losers of the last 40 years. It’s better to be old and married, apparently:

The new plan that MGM Resorts International is pitching for Springfield — just up I-91 — looks more like West Hartford’s Blue Back Square. There will be housing, retail and gambling in an urban renewal-style casino project. The Globe has some of the details and a rendering from MGM. 

Once again, a city looks to gambling to save its soul. In the absence of anything else, maybe that’s the future for a slowly dying New England city.

Technology defines so many things about them, Levine and Dean write, for good  and bad. They are extremely connected, and yet isolated; while they are “in 24/7  contact with a tribe of friends, family and acquaintances via social media, they  are more alone in many of the activities they pursue,” with only a third of  undergraduates reporting that they attend college social and community events at  least once a month. This connectedness/isolation contradiction makes them “weak  in interpersonal skills, face-to-face communication skills, and problem-solving  skills.”

Among the parties with whom they are in near-constant contact  are their parents. “Unlike other generations that called home once a week, two  out of five students (41 percent) are in touch with parents by phone, e-mail,  text or visit at least daily,” the report states. “One in five (19 percent) is  in contact three or more times a day.” That is reflective of a dependence on  parents and other adults (attributable in part to coddling by said parents) that  leaves many of them underprepared to enter the world on their own, and leaves  many college deans and other officials telling the authors that “the biggest  change on campus since 2001 is parent involvement — and sometimes intrusion –  on campus.”

“Most people will agree that our marijuana policies don’t make sense,” said Tracy, who is an incoming senior who was student government president last year. “The war on drugs has been a failure. It’s really important for students to be working to change our marijuana laws.”

Parents of incoming freshpeople I’m sure will be pleased with this distinction. I guess this means Gov. Malloy will certainly rank among High Times’ favorite state leaders.

Tracy’s blog reports that:

#1 University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT) The Huskies of UConn SSDP [Students for Sensible Drug Policy] have led the pack this year in reforming marijuana policy both on and off campus. Most notably, they played a huge role in helping pass medical marijuana legislation in Connecticut by hosting rallies, coordinating student-lobbying efforts and testifying before lawmakers. No wonder UConn won the “Campus Change” award at the 2012 International SSDP Conference in Denver this March.

I asked Tracy, who is the national board of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, whether this sends the wrong message to students. He said that’s not the point — this shows that UConn students are very involved: “It’s a great testament to how active and engaged students are politically at UConn. This is much moee about the policy side of it than the marijuana side…It’s not about how much weed they smoke.”

Hill, a former GOP U.S. Senate candidate  and Dunleavy, a labor union organizer and political consultant, will discuss the various races on Tom Dudchik’s Capitol Report TV, which airs as part of FOX-CT’s political “Power Hour” on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m.

Here are some of their predictions for Tuesday in a few of the more interesting races:

5th District: Hill is predicting an upset win for Mark Greenberg on the Republican side while Dunleavy sees Andrew Roraback prevailing in a squeeker. Hill passed on the Democrats while Dunleavy, a Donovan supporter, is sticking with his candidate.

U.S. Senate: Both men predicted a stronger, if not winning, showing for Chris Shays, who has trailed badly against Linda McMahon. Both agree that Chris Murphy is headed for a win against Susan Bysiewicz.
