Boomers Program, AARP Texas to host Volunteer Connection Fair

Richland College’s Boomers Program and AARP Texas will host a Volunteer Connection Fair for adults age 50 and older to learn about volunteer opportunities within the community.The free event will be from 4-7 p.m. on Nov. 12 in El Paso Hall.

Several organizations will be present at the Volunteer Connection Fair with information on volunteer opportunites and the event will feature AARP’s new Create The Good Web site.

“Part of Richland College’s mission is to encourage our students of all ages to become lifelong learners and global citizens, building sustainable local/world community,” said
Teresa Love, outreach coordinator for Richland’s Boomers Program & Emeritus Program. “We know that plus 50 adults have a wealth of experiences to contribute.”

Employee Success – Richland Music Professor Mark Carlson recently served as a guest clinician at the University of North Texas (UNT) Euphonium Department’s weekly Departmental Recital. Dr. Carlson provided written and oral comments for 16 students amidst their 11 performances, and was honored to be invited to work with the students of Brian Bowman and his teaching assistants. The UNT euphonium studio is widely recognized for its history of excellence both in student success and pedagogy.

This week’s RLC update – Student journalists learn by covering major campus events

Student Success – Richland journalism students gained professional experience during the past week. First, student journalists from the Richland Chronicle, KDUX Web Radio, and KDUX-TV conducted a news conference with Apollo 11 Astronaut Buzz Aldrin during his visit to Richland on Oct. 30. KDUX-TV students helped produce the video recording of Dr. Aldrin’s speech in Fannin Performance Hall, and student reporters covered the fundraising dinner at the Adolphus Hotel. To commemorate Aldrin’s visit to campus, the Chronicle published a special wrap-around section on Oct. 27. Finally, amid the flurry of news to cover, journalism students found time to tour the Dallas bureau of the Associated Press on Oct. 28, and KDUX Web Radio conducted a live remote audio Web cast of Richland’s Halloween festivities. Upcoming student journalism events are expected to include a tour of the FOX-4 TV studios and the installation of AP ENPS, an industry-standard electronic news management system, used by 60 percent of the world’s TV newsrooms.

Sustainable Community Building - Richland hosted the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) Region 10 Conference on Nov. 6. Richland’s School of Teacher Preparation, in partnership with Richardson ISD, welcomed 350 students from local area middle and high schools to participate in this future educator conference. Richland’s Teacher Preparation program prepares students to be successful working with children and adolescents in public and private schools and offers programs to prepare students to enter a career in education from the para-professional level to the certified professional teacher level.

Institutional Effectiveness – Richland faculty will be participating in an upcoming professional development activity, conducted by Alexei Matveev, to learn the process of articulating statements of student learning outcomes and designing curriculum maps so that intended program outcomes are appropriately integrated in program courses. Participating faculty will experience how to: design a system of assessments from the classroom level to the program outcomes level and beyond; develop a curriculum map; and analyze results to assure alignment of curriculum with desired student learning outcomes at the program, discipline, or degree level. This professional development activity is provided to help move Richland to the next level of student learning outcomes assessment.

This week’s RLC update – Two RCHS juniors volunteer at Baylor Medical Center

Richland Collegiate High School (RCHS) juniors Aakarshita Bansal and Samuel Potter have been selected to be volunteers at the Baylor Medical Center in Plano. They arrive at 6 a.m. to perform their volunteer services and to fulfill their RCHS Service Learning commitment before attending classes at Richland during the day. Service Learning began at Richland in 1997 with AACC’s Corporation for National Service’s Learn and Serve Higher Education Grant Program, created to support efforts to make community service an integral part of the education and life experiences of students in the nation’s colleges and universities. Last academic year more than 500 Richland/RCHS students completed more than 13,000 hours of service in the community assisting clients from 100 agencies.

Call for Entries: Water and sustainability theme for “Water: More or Less” exhibit at Richland College

Richland College of the Dallas County Community College District is now accepting entries for its juried art show, “Water: More or Less,” which opens Jan. 30. The juried exhibition focuses on the role of water and sustainability within the environment. Entries are due by Sat., Dec. 5. Download prospectus.

All artists who apply must live in Texas or bordering states including Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Arkansas. All media will be accepted but must not weigh over 30 lbs. The entry fee is $15. For more details on eligibility and application instructions, visit www.callforentry.org.

New York City artist Paul Villinksi will be the juror for this show and $1,500 in awards will be given. His inventive use of recycled materials and found objects captivates viewers by revealing the creative potential dormant in the ordinary. Villinksi’s “Emergency Response Studio,” a repurposed FEMA trailer, utilizes green methods of construction to confront topics of local responsibility and art within the community.

“Water: More or Less” was developed in conjunction with the Art, Science and Sustainable Community Symposium hosted by Richland College on Jan. 30. Acceptance notifications will be distributed on Dec. 20. Accepted works must delivered to Richland College by Jan. 15 and will be featured in a commemorative catalog.

Employee Success – Anitra Cotton, Whitney Rosenbalm, and Randy Jensen of Richland’s College Communications & Marketing (CCM) team recently presented three Round Table presentations on “Adding Social Media to Your Marketing Mix: You’re Never Too Old to Facebook” at the regional National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) conference in San Antonio. In addition, congratulations to Richland Graphic Artist Jennifer Curtiss who received a gold NCMPR Medallion Award during the conference for her design of the Richland Wind Ensemble Fall Poster.

Student Success – Congratulations to Richland student athletes Lilly Valero and Nicole Spruille for recently grabbing NJCAA Division III Player of the Week honors. Lilly’s goal-keeping efforts have helped lead the Thunderduck Women’s Soccer Team, who are currently ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA Division III national poll, to a 12-3-1 record. Nicole, a sophomore, leads the Thunderducks in play kills with 235, averaging 3.18 per set, and she is also ninth in the nation with a .445 hitting efficiency and No. 13 in play kills.

Sustainable Community Building – Richland Coordinator of Facilities Services Sonny McDonald recently represented Richland at the 12th Annual Texas Recycling Conference in Galveston where he accepted two awards for Richland for its first Recyclemania competition effort. Richland was also awarded the First-Place Award for the Radical Recycling on Campus category in the 2009 North Texas Corporate Recycling Association’s Gr3een Awards at a luncheon in Grand Prairie in late September.
