Cornell’s Max Seibald ‘09 made the squad at midfield. Mike Leveille’s brother Kevin, a Chicago Fire MLL all-star, missed the cut.

Syracuse, NY — Former Syracuse University lacrosse stars Ryan Powell (2000) and Mike Leveille (’08) were among the 23 players selected to the final roster of the U.S. National Team announced Monday by US Lacrosse. Former Orange standouts Matt Abbott and Steven Brooks did not make the final cut.

Also making the team was Liverpool native and Army alum Adam Fullerton (’08) in goal and former Cornell All-American midfielder Max Seibald (’09) and close defender Ryan McClay (’03).

The training team roster of 41 was narrowed down to the Federation of International Lacrosse-mandated size of 23 players after three fall exhibition weekends in West Point, Annapolis and Stony Brook, N.Y. All 23 players selected by the coaching staff, will compete in the FIL World Championship on July 14-24 in Manchester, England.

“I want to congratulate the entire pool of players on their efforts, attitude and stellar play over three tremendous weekends this fall,” Team USA head coach Mike Pressler said in an email sent from US Lacrosse. “Without question, this was the best way to go in this thorough and at times exhausting process. We feel these 23 men give us the best chance to win the gold at the 2010 world championship in Manchester.”

The 2010 U.S. men’s national team includes five members of the 2006 U.S. men’s team that finished as runner-up to Canada at the world championship: Ryan Boyle, Kevin Cassese, Powell, Matt Striebel and Kyle Sweeney. Boyle, Cassese and Striebel were also members of the gold medal-winning 2002 U.S. men’s team. Since the first recognized international championship in 1967, the U.S. has won eight gold medals, most recently in 2002.

Semi-Finals: Team 3 defeated Team 1 (21-13) & Team 3 defeated Team 2 (22-20)

Championship Game: Team 4 defeated Team 3 (21-14)

Throughout the indoor season, Team 4 has been dominant on a very consistent basis. In the first game on Saturday, Team 4 was given a scare by team 1, who held them to a tie at halftime. Team 4 regrouped during the halftime break, huddled together on the edge of the field motivating themselves and developing a strategy which would ultimately lead them to victory in their semi-final.

Following the Team 4 v. Team 1 game, Teams 2 and 3 battled themselves to a very exciting 22-20 game won ultimately by team 3. This not only energized both teams and fans, it energized Team 1 who spent the first half cheering raucously and the second half sitting together preparing for the final, and it set the table for a very memorable and exciting HS Indoor final.

When the Championship game started, the teams traded goals back and forth. At one point the score was 4-3 to Team 4. Slowly but inexorably, Team 4 drew ahead, and maintained a steady pace on their way to a 21-14 win. The difference in the game between the two teams seemed overwhelmingly to be team 4’s willingness and ability to pass, as 9 of their 21 goals were assisted as compared to only 1 of Team 3’s 14 goals. Coach Tillson commented, “Team 4 won the day both because of their skills and because of their ability to gel as a team and share the responsibility. It was a good game and a good win for team 4.”

MS Team 3 are the Rhino Fall 2009 Indoor Champions

Game MVP’s: #202 Ryan Sawiki & #199 Timothy Harmen

League MVP: Timothy Harmen

Semi-Finals:

Team 3 defeated Team 1 (22-12)

Team 3 defeated Team 2 (13-9)

Championship Game: Team 3 defeated Team 4 (25-15)

In the first Semi-Final game, Team 3 took on Team 1 and defeated them 22-12. Team 3 was able to finish their shots and make good passes. Passing played a huge role in the game, as all of Team 1’s goals were individual efforts. While Team 3 scored 7 assisted goals which ultimately led them to victory and gave a preview of many of the games to come.

The second MS Semi-Final game was between team 2 and team 4. Again, passing and unselfish play ruled the day, as Team 4 outscored their opponent 13-9. Team 4 had 4 assists in the game as compared to 0 from Team 2. As 4 goals was the margin of victory, it is easy to see that these extra passes paid dividends for Team 4.

The Middle-School Championship Final game was a contest between Team 3 in White and Team 4 in Camo. While assists were not the pivotal factor in this game, teamwork and leadership were. As the tournament MVP for the Middle-School, Timothy Harmen, spent the whole game, on the field and on the bench, talking to his team, exhorting them to success and providing them a leader behind whom to rally. The team was made up of several players who scored early and often. Add this to Harmen’s tendency to consistently be in the right place at the right time on the field, the impressive passing displayed by the team, and the tenacity with which they battled every minute; Team 3 was able to win by a final score of 25-15.

Congrats to our MVP’s and to HS Team 4 & MS Team 3!

Rhino will be doing an Indoor Winter League! Schedule and registration will be up and rockin’ this week!

Peter, how is college going so far? College has been an awesome experience thus far. Academically it has been very challenging and different from high school. Social life at Colgate is great, there is always something to do and the lacrosse team really sticks together socially, everyone on the team are great friends with one another. Lacrosse wise it has been amazing. The workout facilities, the new gear, and of course the level of play all make it so fun.

How have your practices been going? Fall ball practices were really exciting. We practiced 5 days a week and had 2 lifts a week. The biggest change from high school to college practices was that there is absolutely no standing around in college. Practices are very fast paced, and transition oriented. Obviously all us freshman were a little nervous for that first practice but everything settled down quickly and then it was just back to playing lacrosse. I definitely felt like I made a great impact this fall.

Have you picked a major yet? Nope, considering some options including economics, geography, history, and English.

What’s the biggest difference you have found between west coast and east coast lacrosse? I have been playing back east for about 4 years now, in tournaments, etc. and I would say there is very little difference between east and west coast lacrosse at the high school level, except maybe how polished their stick skills are out east. The biggest transition is from high school to college, where everyone has a bit of a learning curve to make up. Having an equal left and right hand certainly doesn’t hurt, the biggest thing for Oregon players to improve on is not their shooting, it’s their stick skills and their mental game.

How did Rhino Lacrosse help you improve your game and prepare you for college lacrosse? Rhino gave me an opportunity to learn from amazing coaches that had already been there and experienced college lacrosse. I still use their advice and coaching, particularly the instruction of Ryan and Tony, every day I play. The mental part of the game is so huge in college, and Rhino coaches were huge in helping me change my game to more of a thinker than just an athlete. I think Ryan Powell is one of the smartest lacrosse players of all time, and having him teach me through high school has helped immensely.

The recruiting process can be challenging, how did being a part of Rhino Select help with your recruiting process? I had already given my commitment to Colgate before I started playing Rhino, so my recruiting process was basically over at that point. But having seen younger players benefit from Rhino recruiting wise has been great. The exposure is excellent.

Now that you have achieved your goal of playing college lacrosse, what is your new lacrosse goal? That is a simple one, to win the Patriot League championship and advance in the NCAA tournament. I am so excited for spring to come so we can start real games. This team has a lot of potential and I am looking forward to it.

How’s Upstate NY treating you? I am anxiously awaiting winter, and at the same time it has already come (our first snow was on October 16!!!!!). But honestly fall in Hamilton, New York is absolutely beautiful. The northeast is just amazing in the fall and I couldn’t ask for a better college environment, but it is cold haha, and winter will be an adventure seeing as my roommate Kyle Stanich is from the Los Angeles area. It has been really nice to be in a more rural location having grown up near downtown Portland.

What do you miss the most about Oregon? I miss a lot about Oregon, like any college kid I miss my family, friends, just the overall feeling of home. But Colgate has a very comfortable feeling which is really nice. Specifically I would have to say I miss the Mexican food, which is phenomenal on the west coast. Also I will definitely miss the mild weather in a few weeks here, when it is consistently way below freezing over here. The east coast has been pretty good to me so far though.

Any message for young players wanting to play lacrosse at the next level? Stick skills and game sense are the most important things in lacrosse, hands down, no exceptions. Since being here I have seen kids without the most amazing athleticism score lots of goals based solely on their knowledge of the game and their ability to handle the ball. Also shoot overhand, I know as a high school player I hated shooting the ball high to low, but now that I am in college I really shoot the ball low about 80% of the time. It is much more effective.

The University men’s club lacrosse team is set to start its fall season and get back to the MCLA championship game this spring. The team’s annual alumni game is Oct. 30, and its Fall Tournament is Nov. 7.

Correction Appended

The Oregon men’s club lacrosse team finished the spring season last year ranked in the top 25 nationally, and lost only three seniors to graduation. With 33 players returning from last year’s squad — including four of the five leading scorers — head coach Joe Kerwin is optimistic that he can guide the Ducks to another successful year.

Kerwin returns to Oregon this year after a short two-year tenure as the head coach at Notre Dame de Namur University in California. Kerwin had a 16-6 record as the head coach of the Division II Argonauts, but decided to return to Oregon.

According to the club’s Web site, last season’s co-head coaches Andrew Clough and John Wright each made the decision to step down after Kerwin contacted the university about a
potential comeback.

“The decision really wasn’t about NDNU and their program,” Kerwin said in a press release on the team’s web site. “Coaching those guys was great and I have great respect for the program that they have. Basically I just wanted to come back to Eugene because of the city and the love I have for the University.”

In his first six-year stint as the head coach of Oregon, from 2002 to 2007, Kerwin transformed the lacrosse program from being “a club team in every sense of the word,” to a program that operates on a “Division II or Division III level.” In his last season as the head coach at Oregon, Kerwin lead the Ducks to an appearance in the 2007 MCLA national title game. The MLCA is a national organization for club lacrosse teams with 213 member schools across ten conferences. The Ducks play in the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League.

Despite all the schools in the MCLA, Kerwin thinks that the Ducks can be a premier club
lacrosse program once again.

“Being a top-five program is where Oregon should be every year,” he said.

Oregon starts the year with a four-week fall season, which includes scrimmages against in-state foes Willamette, Southern Oregon, Oregon State, and the University of Washington. The Ducks also host an alumni game and take part in a fall tournament that Oregon will host on Nov. 7.

The fall season gives the team a chance to see how they play together in game situations. After the short dress rehearsal, the Ducks will hit the gym again and prepare for the start of the spring season in early 2010.

Although 14 new players join the team this year, Kerwin said that there is plenty of quality leadership. He is confident that the nine seniors on the team will lead by example and “show the freshmen what needs to be done.”

Five of the nine seniors were a part of the 2007 team that finished the season ranked second nationally, and that experience will be vital to the Ducks. Among them is senior attacker Justin Blackmore, who led the Ducks in goals and assists last season.

Blackmore is one of the team’s four co-captains this year, and is looking forward to the challenge of showing the younger players “what Oregon lacrosse is all about.”

Blackmore said that the Ducks are focused on winning the conference title this season and hope to ride that success back to the national tournament.

Assistant coach Jon Bongiorno returns to the sideline this year, and he, too, is confident that the Ducks can return to glory.

“Talent-wise, I think this team is as good as the (national runner-up) 2007 team,” he said. “You hate to use cliches, but it’s really going to come down to desire.”

October 20, 2009 from insidelacrosse.com

Eugene, Or. –The University of Oregon men’s lacrosse team finished last season in Denver with what many of the players have called a “learning experience” for the young team and, after graduating only three starters, Oregon has their sights set on the National Championship Tournament once again. After a tough week of tryouts, the Ducks have announced their roster for the 2009-2010 season and welcome sixteen new freshman to the team. Coach Joe Kerwin said, “We had a really competitive week of tryouts this year and I’m excited to see what these young guys can do. We had to make some tough decisions but I know that we’ll be putting the strongest team we can out on the field.”

Another new addition to the team is Head Coach Joe Kerwin, who returns to Eugene after a two year hiatus at Notre Dame de Namur. Senior attackman Justin Blackmore said of having Kerwin back, “You can tell that everyone’s really excited about the change just from the first couple weeks of practice. We know Coach Kerwin is going to be a good leader for the program and will take us where we want to go in the future.” Also, Assistant Coach Jon Bongiorno joins the Ducks after being an assistant and head coach at Eugene’s Marist High School for the last four years.

Despite the loss of three impact players from last years’ squad, the Ducks don’t think they will experience much of a drop off because of the depth and talent of the team that looks to replace them. The U of O will especially look to senior captains Justin Blackmore, Brett Whyte, Erik Lyneis, and Mike Gerrard, as well as juniors Nick Johnston, Kevin Clark, and Austin Zilis to lead the team on and off the field throughout the year.

The Ducks will start their fall season with scrimmages with on Saturday, October 24 from 11am-4pm. Following a week of practice the annual Oregon Lacrosse Alumni Game will be played Friday, October 30 at 7pm under the lights of the University Nex-Turf field. And to finish up Fall Ball, the Ducks will host the annual University of Oregon Fall Classic Saturday, November 7. Teams participating in the Fall Classic include Oregon State, Western Oregon University, Willamette University, and the Portland Lacrosse Club.
