Soccer - McAllen Memorial Mustangs - Victoria Margo

The McAllen Memorial Lady Mustangs were victorious in the 5A State Area Playoffs after the 4-0 victory over the Edinburg North Lady Cougars. Senior Victoria Margo used her experience and leadership skills on the defensive side. She was a key player in the Lady Mustang shutout. The McAllen Memorial Lady Mustangs will face the Harlingen South Lady Hawks next. We wish them well in the next round.

Basketball - Sharyland v La Joya

Time for a little basketball action, and we went to District 30-5A for it as the Coyotes of La Joya took a trip to Sharyland. Of course, the big buzz was the return of Jesse Pistokache, the point guard who was easily the Newcomer of the Year in the Valley as a freshman. Now a junior, and a year of basketball up north under his belt, Jesse bolsters an already impressive Rattler team. The Lady Rattlers were impressive too while the Lady Coyotes are a very very young team, made up of freshman and sophomore.

Here's Jesse making 2 of his output of 25 for the night, as well as Sharyland post Maddie Garza. We have lots of photos of all four teams at La Joya and Sharyland.

Football - Sharyland v Harlingen

This is what playoff football is supposed to be - tough, hardnose ball with the win decided only as the clock wound down. Though the Rattlers took home the 23-20 win (and the area title), the Cardinals of Harlingen played good football.

Sharyland goes on the to "San Antonio Week" at 2pm Friday in Corpus Christi.

Football - Harlingen South vs. Edinburg North

The cold weather did not stop this heated match-up between the Edinburg North Cougars and the Harlingen South Hawks. A long completion put the Hawks in the scoreboard first, but the Cougars put a good offensive series and setup the running game to even the score. Eventually, the Edinburg North Cougars were too much for the Harlingen South Hawks and took the 39-14 victory to move on to the next playoff round. Congratulations to the Harlingen South Hawks on a great season, and good luck to the Edinburg North Cougars on their playoff run.

Football - Harlingen at McAllen Memorial

After playing several weeks for a playoff spot, the McAllen Memorial Mustangs matched against the Harlingen Cardinals in bi-district play. Right from the get go, the Cardinals established their dominance and showed why they are District Champions. Although the Mustangs showed a few flashes for some moments, the Harlingen Cardinals were too much and convincingly defeated the McAllen Memorial Mustangs 58-20. The Cardinals will face The Sharyland Rattlers next week.

Playoff Football: Sharyland v Laredo United South

And the Rattlers roll on. Boosted by a tight defense that scored points and throttled the Panthers of Laredo United South, Sharyland took a 42-13 win on the road in Laredo. Because the defense touts itself as the best in the Valley, we took a little effort to be sure we had some good shots of the guys who go after the ball.

Brandon Garza did double duty as wide receiver and quarterback late in the game - here he eludes tacklers.

Football - Brownsville RIvera at McHi

The McHi Bulldogs came as the District 31-5A Champions into Friday's game. The Rivera Raiders came in as the underdogs and took advantage of broken plays and turnovers by the McHi Bulldogs. Eventually the Bulldogs took over the lead, but the Rivera Raiders kept on fighting as the game slipped through the McHi Bulldogs' hands with a 33-21 loss to the Raiders.

Playoff Volleyball: Mission Veterans v Floresville

Its not nice to give your fans a heart attack, but the Lady Patriots did just that as they took five sets to take down Floresville in the regional quarter final played in Alice. Head coach Diana Lerma ran out onto the court to join the celebration after her team scored the final point, making it 15-13 and a huge win.

Volleyball - Brownsville Rivera vs. McHi

Electric playoff atmosphere at the McHi Gym. The Brownsville Rivera Lady Raiders and the McHi Lady Bulldogs challenged each other in the Regional Quarterfinals. The Lady Raiders took the first game 25-23. After a close opening game, the Lady Bulldogs answered back and took the second game 23-25. Eventually, the Brownsville Rivera Lady Raiders prevailed and took the following two games 25-10 and 25-18 to move on and play in the Regional Semifinals. Congratulation to the McHi Lady Bulldogs on a great season, and good luck to the Rivera Lady Raiders.

Volleyball - Edinburg @ Nikki Rowe

An intense playoff atmosphere was all over the Nikki Rowe HS gym for the match between the Edinburg Lady Bobcats and the Nikki Rowe Lady Warriors. The Lady Warriors took the first game, but the Lady Bobcats answered right back. Eventually, the Nikki Rowe Lady Warriors took the last two games and move on to the next round by defeating the Edinburg Lady Bobcats 3-1.

The Sharyland Rattlers cemented their championship of District 30-5A with a homecoming win over the Sabercats, but Vela scored a little more than the vaunted Sharyland defense would have liked them to by scoring 28 points to the Rattlers' 52. Football - Weslaco East at Nikki Rowe

With nothing for them to play, the Weslaco East Wildcats and the Nikki Rowe Warriors faced off on Friday Night at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats managed to score and keep the first half from being scoreless. In the second half, several turnovers by the Nikki Rowe Warriors helped the Weslaco East Wildcats put the game away and move on to the playoffs with the 33-7 victory over the Warriors.

Football - PSJA at McAllen Memorial

It was basically a playoff game for the PSJA Bears and the McAllen Memorial Mustangs. The winner would move on to play next week. The PSJA Bears controlled the momentum of the game and scored first after a Mustang fumble in the opening drive. In the second half, the Bears continued to have the momentum until a fumble changed the course of the game. The McAllen Memorial Mustangs defeated the PSJA Bears 38-27 to move on to the playoffs.

Volleyball: Sharyland v Laredo United Playoff Volleyball

The District 30-5A champion Lady Rattlers met Laredo United in the Bi-District round of the playoffs, and ran into a whirlwind Lady Longhorn team. In an exciting match that went five sets, Sharyland went down 25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 25-23 and 9-15.

Ladies - its has been an unexpected pleasure this year. You weren't given a lot of credit at the beginning of the season, but you came on strong and lost only one district match. Congrats on a great season.

Football - McAllen Memorial at McHi

After defeating their other city rival, the McHi Bulldogs and the McAllen Memorial Mustangs met Friday night to decide the City of Palms Football Championship. The Mustangs, after a tough loss last week, came in fighting for the last playoff spot. On the other hand, the McHi Bulldogs came undefeated and ready to clinch the District 31-5A Championship outright. All of this did not matter for these city rivals. The Mustangs and Bulldogs had to go into overtime to settle things, and a two-point conversion was the difference in the end. The McAllen Memorial Mustangs defeated the McHi Bulldogs 50-48 in double overtime.

It was the most hyped game of the year - and it lived up to its billing. Sharyland just about guaranteed another District 30-5A championship with a 28-14 win over a very good Cougar team from Edinburg North.

Volleyball: Sharyland v Vela

It was the last tune-up before the playoffs for the District 30-5A champion Lady Rattlers. It took awhile to win the first game, then Sharyland lost the second game, but after barely winning the third game, the deciding fourth was dominated by the Lady Rattlers.

The playoffs start next Tuesday, with Sharyland playing against one of the Laredo teams - hopefully in Roma. We should have all tonight's photos up in a few hours.
