Road Signs is our brand new fall series that starts next Wednesday (09.09.09.) You can’t get to the south beach by driving north, and you can’t get to the top of the mountain if you are walking down it. In the Road Signs series, we will examine the book of Proverbs for wisdom to help each of us navigate the choices life brings because our choices determine the direction of our lives. And it’s our direction, not our intention, that ultimately determines our destination. Where are you heading?

If you haven’t started, here are some ideas you can do on your own:

(you have to make sure your parents approve first):

1. See if you can get a few teammates and book a date at the Valero station here at the corner (Bear and Buckley) to have a car wash.
2. Go Candy Selling. Buy them in bulk and sell for a dollar each.  Go door to door with a friend, set them up in businesses where you know a worker or owner, or sell them at school (if your school will let you).  If you don’t have a membership at a place where you can get candy in bulk…we do…
3. Take a few teammates in a couple of neighborhoods.  On a Friday deliver a postcard that says you will pick up bottles and cans to raise money and for them to leave them on the side of the road in a bag for Saturday pickup and on Saturday collect all of the bags.
4. Write a letter to family and friends about your trip and ask them to help out. This is usually a very successful method to raise funds. (Don’t write a letter to local businesses…use the playbill advertising for that) A letter template will be available later this week.
5. Babysitting
6. Lawn Mowing at your neighbors/relatives houses.

And don’t forget we still have RSM Fundraisers:

1. Garage Sale: July 10-11th – Setup on July 9th from 1-5.  Proceeds will be split among all who help.  You will need to sign up to help setup for two hours on Thursday and help sell either on the 10th or the 11th of July.  Signups will start next Wednesday.
2. Dinner Theater: July 25th:
   There are many changes this year to the Dinner Theater:
   First: We are offering two shows: a 2 pm matinee and a 6 pm show. Tickets will be $12.
   Secondly: You will be given a table at each show to sell tickets for. Tickets will be $12 each and you will keep half of the money for your trip (the rest goes to the meal and set). That means you could potentially earn $96 from the Dinner Theater. You must be present at the Dinner Theater to earn the money as you will also be waiting on the tables you sell (max 8 ppl per show).
   Third: This will be an actual murder mystery dinner theater NOT LIKE WE’VE DONE IN THE PAST.
   SETUP for the show will be Thursday, July 23^rd from 4 to 6
   Also, don’t forget to sell playbill advertising: I will be honest with you.  Getting advertisements for the playbill is going to bring in the most money the fastest.  It is hard to ask at first, but once you get in the rhythm of it…it goes by easily.  You can do this with a teammate and let us know to split it all in half. Go to all kinds of businesses.  Talk with teammates to make sure you are hitting different sections of towns.  Real Estate Agents, Lawyers and Insurance People and Small Owned Shops and Food Places tend to give ads more than Brand Larger stores. You get to keep 90% of what you earn with advertisements.

The tricks are to:

1. go with a friend…it is easier to get the details out with someone next to you.
2. start now
3. be respectful of our congregation…that they will be supporting us through our RSM fundraisers… make sure that you do not write a letter to the whole congregation…
4. make sure that you do not write letters or ask for support to other team mates family members.  (example: Only Brook and Lauren should ask their dad for an ad placement…that type of thing.)
5. write letters and ask your family members and even hit the pavement and go door to door to ask to shovel or rake or for ads…depending on who you are asking.
6. make sure you have your “schpeel” memorize and ready to go, so when you see someone you have something set say.  It needs to be short and sweet.  An example: “Our drama team has made it to the National Level of competition, which will be held in Charlotte, NC.  I am fundraising so that I can join my team and compete in nationals.  I am wondering if you would be interested in helping me get there by…(fill in the blank…I am willing to rake…by placing an ad in our playbill for our upcoming dinner theatre…etc.)

I want you to be honest, but know that if you lead with our church name then many people stop listening.  If someone asks you who you are affiliated with, then you can let them know it is your church youth group, RSM…then you might say that they might have seen us in the paper.  “Our RSM band, has been asked to compete in a national level Fine Arts compeition.”

I would much rather that you all are completely honest and represent the team well, then get the money…the money will come.  In no time at all, I believe that you all will have what you need to make it Orlando.

Lastly: Payments need to begin coming in for your trip!!!

$250 due June 21st
$250 due July 13th
