The Wheel in Space (Doctor Who Series 5 Story 7)

Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority.

So here we are, closing series 5 with a cyber escapade. With only two remaining episodes it would be easy to blame the wheel in Spaces poor showing as a recon based problem but I don't honestly think that this is the case. The story really is far too long and convoluted, characters that should shine really don’t and the whole thing falls rather flat.

One of the poorer Cyber stories, certainly not bad but not great either.

Nightmare (1964)

Another movie for the Hammer collection for this reviw I think. This time it is 1964s Nightmare. This is from the realism side of the Hammer stable and, like Paranoiac and Taste of Fear, is rooted firmly in psychological foundations.

Our young Heroine Janet (Played by Jenny Linden) is trouble by nightmares and fears she is losing her mind as her mother before her. This leads to her return home from Boarding School where her fears become even more pronounced. The film is brilliantly shot in black and white and initially very interesting indeed. Once the first major revelation occurs however the film tapers off into what I felt was a weaker second half. Despite this weaker climax I still feel that the movie has some good bones in it and thus well worth a watch.

If you can find it, take a look.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

All the horrible things in your life... Your father, the wars, I can make all this go away. You can live knowing that the woman you loved was hunted down, or you can join me. I promise you will have your revenge.

X-Men Origins Wolverine is like that woman you pick up at the end of a night out. You have had a few beers and feel like she is the one. She looks great in that lighting and boyee are you randy. Then you get her home and find out she is a man.

That the feeling after watching Origins. I feel like somebody got dressed up real purty but it was all just an act and one all the nice fighting and boneclaws is done you essentially have a movie that is just playing at dressing up. Lacking plot, feeling or passion the only part that really shines is the end.

Its not a terrible movie but it certainly isn't a good one and throughout feels like one massive box ticking session.

Don't bother.

Naked Massacre (1976)

Naked Massacre is an odd little low budget film detailing a Vietnam Vets capture and murder of a houseful of 8 nurses (9 if you include the visitor).

If you think that is sparse than that's because this film is. Its very low on detail and the shock factor is diluted by this. In fact the movie comes across as a soft porn flick rather than anything else. Its rather a dull but scenic ride relying almost entirely on nudity for its shocks.

Not worth seeking out unless you like naked nurses…. Oh take a look then.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)

Do you know how Florentine women ensure their husbands come home? Every morning they slip him a slow poison, and every evening the antidote. That way, when the husband spends the night away, he has a very bad night.

This started off brilliantly with a very immersive and well shot intro, the cinematography is vivid and brave and this immediately hooked me…for about five minutes.

We are suddenly shot into what I can only describe as a martial arts pre revolutionary epic. By epic I mean in the “takes bloody ages and is boring” context. The film has so many annoying plot holes and terrible characters that the storyline is totally lost however in a way this is good as it essentially revolves around the same subplot as Hot-Fuzz! Yes the whole village (almost) done it.

Rather then an artistic merging of the French Loup Garou legends with our more well known werewolf legends we instead get a story that very soon becomes tiresome and the slowmo and jump shots annoying.

I think that the main problem I had with this one is that it didn't seem to go in any direction I would have said was a good story. It soon becomes quite obvious what is occurring and as it occurs over the space of months it is tedious to say the least, the fact that the Protagonist who's name I can only remember as Frou Frou or Fromage takes residence in a bawdy house and his prospective love interest doesn't hear about it is one of the minor plot absurdities. Another is the abandoning of a character for dead when you have a beast to feed them too and yet another a character that has pretended to have a missing arm for several years!!!!

Avoid this beautifully shot and atmospheric tosh.

The Invasion (2007)

Don't show emotion, then they can't tell who's who.

Do we really need a 4th version of The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers? After the great original, the brilliant remake and the one I haven't seen (The Bodysnatchers) what can this new kid bring to the show?

Nicole Kidman's tits in a tight sweater.

The film is generic and dull and makes the cardinal sin of dropping the concept of the pods. Its a film about pod people without pods. What the hell were they thinking.

However it is increasingly bleak as we enter a world of emotionless zombielike people (unless they need to be aggressive) that are beyond saving (until the happy ending).

The film is a mess, it leaps around like a freshly caught salmon, some scenes defy comprehension (such as Nicole's uncanny torch radar) and I am truly tired of the “we know somebody that is immune” bullshit. Most galling is the need to have a control over the events. The protagonists in these movies does not need to know exactly what is happening. Its is fine that it is. This is the strength of films like Cloverfield and the failing of movies like The Day After Tomorrow.

The final salt in the wound is the seemingly mandatory happy ending. Everybody gets better. Except of course the 8 or 9 people that Nicole murders. For a movie that preaches the human morality so strongly the fact that the victims were curable and she has killed innocent hosts isn't even mentioned.

A film to avoid unless you really are bored. See the earlier ones where the threat is slightly more than a thinly veiled superflu allegory.

Fury From the Deep (Doctor Who Series 5 Story 6)

Now this is more like it, despite the need for a reconstruction this story is a breath of fresh air with Doctor Who excelling in its tried and tested “Base Under Siege” formula. The story is genuinely unsettling and in places close to horrific. In particular the hideous Oak and Quill are disturbing to the extreme.

The plot is fairly simple and will be revisited several more time by other stories. In this case it is gas drilling that disturbs a seaweed based intelligence that… well tries to take over the world. The story is also notable in finding a use for Victoria and, although I thought I liked her, to be honest her departure at the end wasn’t too soon in coming. Her screaming did become tiresome. One other complaint is that at 6 episodes the story is really and truly overlong.

I wonder how many children begged their parents for countryside holidays following this one.

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

You tricked me, you black-hearted who-o-o-o-o-ore! You b-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-itch!

Drag me to hell seems to be a polarising film. The critics like it (93%) the public not so (61%) SOURCE: Rotten Tomatoes. Why is this and which camp do I fall into?

Well I am obviously more a critic then plebeian, and if the general public cannot see the talent in this film then I don't want to a member of it.

Drag Me to Hell isn’t a great film, perhaps that 93% score is rather generous. It is, however, an excellent “old school” horror employing all of Raimis old tricks including odd camera angles, sassy demons and unnerving situations. My complaints are few but they are significant. There is still too much CGI, some of which is terrible (the eye popping scene) and I am still trying to work out why Christine had an anvil tied to her garage ceiling? (eye popping again). The jumps are telegraphed from miles away and tension is destroyed by LOUD music and effects that make you jump more than the visuals.

All that aside to be honest I am at a loss as to how anyone could vociferously hate this film. Perhaps there are not enough vacuous teens or confusing plot points? Yes the movie has flaws but the plot is sound and the jumps genuine. Have I lost contact with the world of horror entirely or is 80’s old school just desperately uncool?

Drag Me to Hell is an above par horror relying far too much on the BOO factor. I have to forgive this though as that IS Raimis style! Worth a watch.

The Signalman (A Ghost Story for Christmas) 1976

I have no trailer for this one, rather a special treat at the end.

The Signalman is based on the same titled short story by Charles Dickens and is lovingly adapted in that way that the BBC does so well. The story is almost entirely conversational and between just two characters, that of the traveller and a railway Signal Box operator, the titular Signalman.

Running at a bare 40 minutes the film is nonetheless a great example of how engrossing a well told story can be, spooky and intriguing from start to end the tale is excellently portrayed and Denholm Elliot as the haunted (literally) signalman is a treat to watch as he struggles with his seclusion in the depths of a railway cutting.

A great and atmospheric short film fantastically shot and well worth a watch…which you can do for free right here, so don't take my word for it. I present, The Signalman.

The Web of Fear (Doctor Who Series 5 Story 5)

All these tunnels look the same to me.

Now this is more like it. A genuinely enjoyable slice of Troughton monstrousness the mystical nonsense behind the Great Intelligence as seen in The Abominable Snowmen earlier in the series is swept away and they are allowed to shine as a nasty monster. The set work is stunning and the story well paced. Its such a shame that the majority of this story is lost to the winds.

Making his second appearance in Doctor Who is Nick Courtney however this time he debuts as a certain Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart and does a fantastic job. Oddly he isn't the only UNIT regular to appear John Levine (Benton) also appears albeit as a yeti!

I have a second wind on my mad quest. Bring on Fury From the Deep.

Heathers (1988)

It's one thing to want someone out of your life, but it's another thing to serve them a wake-up cup full of liquid drainer.

Finally I have gotten around to watching Heather. Subconsciously I think I have avoided this movie in the belief that it is a chick flick. Certainly the opening scenes do little to disperse this opinion. However I persevere.

Thank heaven I do. Heathers is a great movie that take the idea of celebrity and popularity and mixes it with the concept of psychopathic lunatic boyfriends. Slater is excellent as the laconic madman that manages to get Veronica killing her “friends” and for a moment I was concerned that the film would play out in an ill advised Bonnie and Clyde mode. However this is not the case and Veronica (Winona Ryder) behaves in a slightly more believable way keeping the film dynamic and interesting throughout.

Thats not to say the movie is belivable, its a teen flick from the 80s about a clique of girls who are 75% Heathers. I mean c’mon. It is, however, very good.

If you are one of the 1% like me that have not seen it Heather is well worth a watch.

The Enemy of the World (Doctor Who Series 5 Story 4)

If anything will test my perseverance than it is the massive number of recons in Series 5. Add to this a slightly out of style story that does not even feel particularly like Doctor Who and you have a recipe for disaster. I found The Enemy of the World to be a supreme challenge. To be honest my only remaining impact from this story THANK GOD ITS OVER.

I feel rather guilty as if I haven't given this story a fair number of words or a real review. Its so difficult to do as the story flowed over me. Given that I am not wasting time trying to analyse it!

Guinea pig 5: The Android of Notre Dame (1989)

I wont try to explain the disparity in the numbering of the Guinea Pig series. In my reckoning this is the 5th one so its number 5. The numbering diverges as some are not acknowledged as Gui... you know what this tosh isn't worth analysing release numbers over.

GP5 starts in the now fairly familiar Guinea Pig style with an odd looking person imparting some kind of wisdom that is actually utter balderdash. We then segue awkwardly into a storyline that seems to revolve around a mad scientists midgets quest to find a cure for his sisters heart illness. All the while ignoring that she is fine with dying. Of course this wouldn't be Guinea Pig without gore and this is provided by the mysterious blackmailer/benefactor who give midget science bloke a nice fresh cadaver to work with. Suffice to say she is female and the focus seems to linger on the decidedly alive looking nipples however even smatterings of (decidedly poor) nudity cannot save this indescribably shite movie.

Of course the strength of the Guinea Pig films is on the gore rather than the nudity. Again we are far from the realistic work of the earlier films, here the rubber skin looks and acts like the rubber it is. The blood is good and well depicted but all else is utter excrement.

I am now watching this terrible series simply for completeness and it has taken such a strong adherence to the principles of my blog to even get me writing this review.

Avoid this utter crap.

Howling IV: The Original Nightmare

Howling IV is essentially a remake of the first movie (or a re-adaptation of the books if you prefer) therefore bizarrely including in in the canonical numbering seems a bit odd. As the the obvious redubs of pretty much all of the sound throughout.

The best I can say about Howling IV is that it hasn't got a furry pouch like 3 or furry sex like 2. In addition… nope I have nothing. The acting in places is awful. The characterisation abysmal and the effects laughable. There is nothing to redeem this one.

Terrible film, avoid like a pox ridden tuppenny whore.

The Hunger Games (2012)

Face the probability of your imminent death, and know that there's absolutely nothing I can do to help you.

For once and in a great rarity for this blog I am reviewing a current film. I will break one of my original aims regarding a certain other film, come straight out and say that this film is NOT a ripoff of Battle Royale. If you think it is you need to watch them both and leave your parents basement! I will not compare them any more.

The Hunger Games was a passable teen book. Nice and gory and quite touching in places. Not a great epic certainly but high amongst the ranks of great books and I would count it amongst some of the great teen books by authors such as Garner and Westell. Suzanne Collins message is hidden in the book by an overarching plot of burgeoning sexual intrigue amongst our youthful protagonists with a lot of mental subtext from Katniss on her feelings about the boys. One of the best changes in the movie is the removal of this. There is very little in the way of love story and the ability to decide who likes who and who is playing the system is left wide open for the viewer to decide.

So as an adaptation of the book does the film work well? I would have to say that this is a resounding yes. The sub theme of the book is bought to the fore and is outstandingly portrayed. You see the Hunger Games are based around one principle tenant. Fairness.

Peter and Katniss see this as they enter the alternate world of the capitol. The world of Panem is not poor, the technology of the Capitol is staggering but the districts are kept down in a state of abject poverty. Dissent is culled and the power of the Capitol kept by the yearly Hunger Games which are also grossly unfair. The richer, stronger, larger districts always have volunteers and although it is denied they have trained to be there. What is worse is that they are at the top range of the age of picking. This sees 18 year olds pitted against 12 year olds on many occasions. The best weapons are at the hardest place to reach and there are no allowances for the huge physical differences the age gap presents. It is just this that forces Katniss to volunteer and her excellently portrayed sister Prim would quite obviously last mere seconds in the arena.

The buildup to the games is brilliantly shown and the reluctance of Haymitch to take the games seriously is summed up in my opening quote "Face the probability of your imminent death, and know that there's absolutely nothing I can do to help you." His alcoholism is is inevitable given that every year he helps another two youngsters to their deaths.

Here we hit the crux of the obvious controversy. This movie essentially features 24 children aged 12 - 18 who fight to the death to keep their respective homelands subjugated. Its a lesson in power that is simple and brutal. Children will be upset by this film. I was upset by this film, one scene in particular where a young child, who reminds Katniss of her sister Prim, meets her inevitable end is truly heartrending. This is ably turned around by one of the additions from the book. Katniss's touching and poignant need to give her some kind of burial is a catalyst that shows exactly why the Games become so important. The very sight of her silent salute sending District 11 into a rage of rioting against their overlords. This horrible event has at least some effect and we see the beginning of the end for the Capitol and President Snow.

I loved The Hunger Games, the removals were not missed, the additions made sense and the changes were understandable and minimal. In essence I believe the film eclipses the book and that in itself is a rare thing.

Well worth a visit to the flicks. An outstanding Sci-Fi amongst a recent sea of dross.

Wes Cravens New Nightmare

I have neglected the Freddy Fest for far too long. With this movie I am up to speed and with the fell swoop of Freddy Vs Jason can finish both series.

So after the latter abysmal entries into the Nightmare series is New Nightmare any good?

Well I will be circuitous and say… it isnt bad. Its wonderful to see Heather Langencamp, John Saxon and Robert Englund together and the film is a massive nod to the fans however the Freddy content is really rather thin. The redesign looks great but again destroys the existing image of Freddy and never really feels right.

Wes manages to put together a very polished movie that blends the franchise mythos and the real world artfully but it never really seems to gel. What it does achieve is to end the franchise on a far higher note than Freddy’s Dead managed to. As long as the even later coda of Freddy vs Jason manages to cock that up of course.

A simple movie for a more refined age. Never feeling entirely in the Freddy myth the movie is entertaining nonetheless and well worth a look.

The Evil of Frankenstein (1964)

Why can't they leave me alone? Why can't they ever leave me alone?

The Evil of Frankenstein starts off at a rollicking pace with Bodysnatching and henchmen, body parts and blood. There are sparks and liquids and it is oh so glorious. Frankenstein in his latest lab is discovered and has to flee with his new acolyte. Where does he flee but to none other than Karlstadt from whence he was exiled…wait hang on. He wasn't exiled but sentenced to death… hmmmm.

OK where were we. They return to the Chateau Frankenstein which has been totally ransacked and The Baron explains how he created the first monster which is…. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT. The creature is awful with a head that looks to be fashioned from a shoebox and paper mache. Here look…

So we are retooling the story are we? The Baron was just exiled and the monster not dissolved in a vat of acid. Did I mention WHAT THE FUCKS THAT. This could work i suppose, after all the Baron is smart and wouldn't expose himself to his enemies in the pub. Oh FFS, oh and did I mention just how bad the monster was? I hope the new one looks more like Christopher Lees makeup. You know, this one.

Ohhhhh frozen in a glacier eh…aw hell. Well as long as they don’t write in some bollocks about hypnotism then we will be fine. WHAT THE FUCK.

OK I’ve had it with this. Bad film, changes lore, crap monster, terrible plot, don’t bother. Poor Peter to be saddled with this shite. He, at least, shines.

The Ice Warriors (Doctor Who Series 5 Story 3)

See. It is working. Zondal is coming to life. Zondal... Zondal... Zondal...

I am heading into the hardest section of Who watching in the world. I speak of nothing less than the virtually entirely missing series 5. Imagine my excitement when I found that The Ice Warriors is largely intact… It’s a shame it is so DAMN DULL.

It creeps at the same pace as the often mentioned glaciers. Like a soporific version of The Thing on Valium the pace manages to fall behind that of a dying tortoise. When things are happening you don’t know what is happening because you honestly cannot understand a word that the computer or Ice Warriors say. Add to this the fact that essentially the plot is 3 hours of a control room or a alien bridge with serious debates about ions …and stuff. Much of which you will struggle to hear et alone understand and you have a truly dire story.

Raising this above the pit of total crapulence is the presence of two Peters, Sallis is OK as Penly but I still expect him to say Cracking. Peter Barkworth is a fantastic Leader Klent. Of other note is the presence of Carry Ons Bernard Bresslaw, however as he is covered head to foot in the , admittedly good, Ice Warrior outfit he doesn't really stand out!

I really didn’t take to this at all.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Yeah, I'm going to bring you something, alright. I decided to make you a special project of mine. You ain't going have to come looking for me at all.

I have slept on this, I have woke on it. I have tossed, I have turned. This film is well regarded. Its an Oscar winner. Its supposed to be good. I didn't like it.

I can’t leave it there however. No Country for Old men should have enthralled me. Its minimal score and truly wonderful and atmospheric direction should have won me over and to a degree it did. However it could never overcome the sheer lack of sense or plot in the movie.

Now realism isn't needed to make a great film. Pulp Fiction is about as realistic as Pamela Andersons tits but it IS an outstanding film. I think that what I disliked so much about the film was its pretensions to be great. Our main protagonist Llewellyn has no character at all. The only moment of thrill came when he called out (the excellently acted but equally hollow) Javier Bardins character with the line quoted at the head of this article. However this is a cold comfort as the confrontation promised doesn't even happen.

No Country for Old Men is a terrible dry hump of a movie. Whipping up the viewer in orgiastic anticipation and then destroying the climax with several off-screen deaths and a truly hideous and ambiguous ending.

For me this the crux of why I disliked the movie. The story was terrible. It seemed to want to send a message, to pass a moral but I couldn't spot it. Tommy Lee Jones as the listless sheriff was obviously banging on about something but WHAT escapes me. However more damningly I really didnt care.

I am sorry but No Country for Old Men fell entirely flat with no dramatic payoff, leaving me with cinematic “Blue Balls”. Like a bowl of plastic fruit it looks so full of promise but essentially is stale and flavourless and therefore is one movie that I will not be watching again.

Saw: The Final Chapter (Saw3D / Saw 7) (2010)

Hello, Evan. I want to play a game. The situation you find yourself in... is of your own doing.

Like the Friday the 13th franchise you really know what to expect from a Saw movie. It will have ingenious traps, lots of blood, make you squirm perhaps and include a twist. This final instalment manages to do all of these things marginally well making it a solid entry into the series. Its certainly better then the last two both of which I found to be eminently forgettable.

The story is a simply convoluted as always, the hardcore fans will pick up on the myriad threads running here, myself I am simply happy to watch the gore.

I did find the trap escapes to be rather less enthralling this time around, mainly because they were all about saving another and not oneself. Ideas are obviously lacking. One thing that I do applaud is the decision to wrap up the story as it has almost become as great a joke AS Friday the 13th.

Like all 3D films it also subjects the viewer to an overuse of “out of the screen” gimmicks which I found rather annoying. I will never be convinced by 3D i am afraid.

Despite its flaws Saw 7 is worth a look.

In amongst the raft of terrible teen movies there is often a paragon. A virtuous beast outshining all around it. The Citizen Kane of Teen Flicks. Reader … this…is….NOT…it.

Fraternity Vacation is a paper thin film plotted terribly ineptly and acted awfully (although Wendell is well played). The eventual get together is obvious yet still seems unlikely and the character breakdowns and motivations could fit on the back of a postage stamp.

This movie exists purely for tits and most of them are of the BeeSting variety.

Really don't bother with this one, it is tiresome and I still don’t know how it filled its allotted time. I certainly don’t intend to waste any more on it.

The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb

I don't know why this exists? It feels like a barely changed re-tread of the film released barely 5 years ago. Yet again we have an angry mummy bent on revenge. This pointless rerun of the earlier seems wholly pointless with none of the style or panache of the prior movie. It even has the gall to include George Pastell in virtually the same role as a fez toting Egyptian!

I found The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb to be rather a lacklustre slog and a terrible Hammer movie overall. Its eventual aggressor (the mummy’s controller) would be obvious to a 3 year old but like this 36 year old, they wouldn’t care!

Paranoiac (1963)

11 years ago Tony Ashby died. To his younger brother, sister and his guardian Aunt his return was rather unexpected.

I am struggling to find a trailer for this one and I am loath to post a clip for fear of spoilers. Paranoiac is a Hammer firmly in the vein of the excellent Scream of Fear. Filmed in glorious mono with great sharp lines and some brilliant lens effects (the claustrophobic but subtle fisheye stands out) the movie is cinematically sublime. add to this a brilliant tight script and compelling story of a brother returned from his grave and you have the recipe for a bewitching movie.

Wait, but there's more. The cast is also fantastic with all four of the principles turning in excellent performances with Oliver Reed being particularly outstanding. The movie is also redolent of the psycho style with some great foreshadowing's of a great scandal and danger to anyone coming near the Ashby family, not simply because of the vast sums of inheritance at stake either. Rather oddly the set was reused the set from the previously reviewed The Old Dark House and Janette Scott (Eleanor) also played in that as Cecily and for this it all feels strangely familiar.

Overall this was a surprisingly good thriller, tense in places and with a few genuinely disturbing sequences this little known 60s Hammer comes greatly recommended.

I really cannot say much about this one. One of the episodes (the surviving part 2) looks great if the Yeti are a little fluffy. However the other 2 hrs + are unwatchable and unhearable. All I can say is that somebody called Murble buzz murble murble is murble buzz buzz murble and he looks like a white blur.

I am sure it was great but am just glad to see the back of it.
