To understand whether chiropractic treatment is good for herniated disc, we have to first understand what a herniated disc means and what is meant by chiropractic treatment?

Discs are located in the spinal cord in between the vertebrae allowing the spine to bend. Such an inter-vertebral disc consists of an outer fibrous ring and a central soft portion. The movement of the vertebrae allows blood and fluids to pass through to this disc supplying it with essential nourishment. When a disc does not receive proper nourishment due to lack of movement, the outer ring dries up and tears resulting in bulging of the central soft portion. This is called herniated disc, also known as slipped disc or disc protrusion.

A herniated disc is often adjudged as the cause for back pain, weakness or numbness in the legs, tingling or burning sensation and other abnormalities of the lower body. All people having a herniated disc need not necessarily suffer from pain or discomfort. Only when the bulge of the disc compresses a nerve does it result in inflammation or pain.

Following are some of the symptoms caused by herniated disc problem:

Numbness, tingling or weakness in one or both arms and one or both legs or feet.

Pain in one leg which is common and sometimes in both legs

Pain radiating from the buttocks and traveling down one thigh to the calf

Total discomfort while lying down in any position

Aching or twisted neck like a sprain which gives severe pain

Disrution in bowel and bladder clearing

Numbness in the groin

Herniated Disc Treatment
Herniated disc can be treated with physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, steroid medication, cortisone injections and as a final option surgery. Surgery is a last option since it is invasive and not always successful.

Chiropractic treatment is a very good alternate to surgery if it is successful. Chiropractic in Greek means to perform with hands. Chiropractors have always believed that biochemical and structural derangement of the spine can affect the nervous system. They use pressure of their hands to manipulate the spinal cord into position and restore spinal movement which improves function and reduces pain. After years of practice chiropractors are trained to locate subluxations and correct them. They also use massage and stretching to relax shortened muscles. There are methods to decompress the vertebrae and allow the disc to heal by itself.

Early Diagnosis
Any treatment including chiropractic treatment cannot completely make up for years of neglect of spinal health. Lack of exercise, incorrect lifting methods, incorrect bending methods, improper posture while sitting and walking, lack of nutritive food are all the various ways of abusing your spine. So, an early diagnosis and proper treatment will go a long way in setting right the problem and relieving you of pain. Chiropractic treatment is highly recommended for such pains since it is non surgical and healthier.

Sciatica is a painful and sometimes debilitating disorder which can occur anywhere from the lower back (lumbar region) and radiate down your leg to your feet. There are different reasons for sciatica and an accurate diagnosis of cause is essential to initiate the treatment process. The various reasons for sciatica could be a fall, an injury, a vehicular accident, pinched nerve problem, compression by piriformis muscle or a dysfunctional disc.

Following are some of the questions your physician may want answered:
1. When did the pain start?

2. Did you suffer an injury, fall or meet with an accident?

3. If yes, how did the pain develop?

4. Describe the pain, whether it is a burning sensation, tingling feeling, numbness anywhere, muscle ache or shooting pain and whether it is felt down the leg?

5. When is your pain worst? For instance, is it during some particular activity or is it when you wake up or when you are sitting for long periods?

6. On a scale of 1 to 10 where will you rate your pain?

7. Does walking uphill make it worse?

8. Does any bodily action like sneezing, coughing, bending aggravate your pain?

9. Have you taken any treatment so far? If yes, what is it?

10. What was the effect of the treatment? Any difference or no difference?

The physician will give you a thorough physical examination to evaluate your reflexes, test your range of movement, posture while sitting and standing and walking, check for muscle spasms and alignment of spine. He will also check your eye movement and test for intensity of pain where the complaint is?

The doctor may also ask you to do the following tests:

1 Lab tests such as urine culture and blood test.

2. X-ray of the spine.

3. MRI Scan of the back – This is magnetic resonance imaging which will show if there is any tumor or damage to disc or ligaments.

4. CT Scan- Computerized tomography which can identify spinal damage.

Usually an MRI or CT scan is taken because they are more effective in diagnosis than an X-ray. They can identify bulging discs and nerve compression. Besides this, in some cases the doctor may advice Discogram to identify a degenerated disc, Myelogram which can identify a narrowed spinal canal, or a Bone scan which can identify osteoporosis, vertebral fractures or infection.

These procedures are not simple but absolutely essential so that a correct and effective treatment plan could be followed.

There are different forms of severe back pain and lower back muscle pain is one of them. This kind of pain is felt in the gluteal and spinae muscles. These two muscles are among the largest body muscles and when they are injured, an individual can feel a very horrible pain. These lower back muscle pains affect the capability to stand, sit and use the legs as well as to walk.

There are several causes of injuries to the lower back such as muscles spasm or strain, bone and bone ligament sprains, slipped disks or joint problems. The most widespread cause of these pains is using the back muscles to do activities that the body is not conditioned to such as heavy furniture lifting and yard work. Symptoms of lumbar spine muscle pain can be incapacitating and extremely agonizing. Despite the severity of these pains, they have no long-lasting health effects on the patient. Nevertheless, it leaves a significant fear spectre in the heart and mind of the patient.

Symptoms of Lower Back Muscle Pains
* Pain is the main indicator of lower back muscular injury. Pains in the lower back tend to be the most awful desolation that one can go through. The lower back and buttock muscles are extremely painful after injury. The pains may be consistent or random and largely depends on the degree of injury. Often, the pain is worsened by performance of certain acts or movements.

* People with injuries to the lower back often experience muscles spasms. Back muscle spasms are violent and uncontrolled contraction of the back muscles. This condition resembles the “Charlie horse” and may be extremely agonizing in the large back muscles.

*muscle rigidity and tightness is also widespread. One may experience an abnormal stretching or pulling sensation when using the back muscles.

Lower Back Muscle Pain Recommendations
Am aware that it really hurts; I have lived with a horrible lower back muscle pain for 18 years. There were instances when the pain became unbearable making to a point I would breakdown and cry. Relaxation offers the best remedy for extreme lower muscular back pains. Take some time to recover by taking things easy. However, do not sleep in bed all day, move up and about gently as you rest. Do not presume that you may be hurt for weeks. An optimistic metal mind-set is vital for fast recuperation.

Minor back injuries cause the majority of the lower back pains. This is ordinary in people who engage in hard manual labor on a regular basis. Conversely, the injury triggers the psychosomatic back pain syndrome. If you suffer from persistent back pains in the muscles, study more on the subject of knowledge therapy and how it may be the true answer towards solving your lower back muscle pain problems.

A lot of people are familiar with the Mckenzie exercises for back pain and neck pains; however, they are uncertain of the program’s objectives and the composition of the exercises.

What the McKenzie Method Extension Exercise accomplishes – it localizes or diminishes low back muscles pain owing to the lumbar flexion syndrome. The supplementary Pilates practice and training puts in an amount of safety and comfort. It accomplishes this through

(1), Calming Psoas muscles through stretching them along with exerting gentle pressure on top of their set off points. These muscles constrict the nerve roots and discs on the lower back side resulting in sciatica and low back ache.

(2), Gently handle the lower spine vertebral bodies separately with the intention of letting the disc nucleus, which is jelly like in nature to” flow” backwards to its hale and hearty central location.

A widespread observation is that Mackenzie’s approach comprises of a number of exercises that individuals might accomplish by themselves. Even though this might be true, the method is an all inclusive programs of evaluation, treatment and deterrence strategies that are typically best learned wit the help of a physical therapist trained in this program.

Overall Objects in Healing Back Pain Problems
In the years of 1960 Robin McKenzie who was a physical therapist living in New Zealand developed the Mckenzie exercises for back pain. During his years in the practice, he observed that stretching the spine provided substantial pain relief in specific patients allowing them to go back to their routine activities.

Exercise and physical therapy are utilized in extending the spine in the approach adopted by Mackenzie assisting the patient to centralize the pain through moving it from the arms and legs into the back. This is based on the notion that back pain is more tolerable than arm or leg pain and this approach simply advocates centralization of the pain, which makes it possible for the root source to be treated and not the symptoms.

Mackenzie method is based on the principle that self-treatment and self healing are significant in relieving pain and rehabilitation. No reflexive modalities like cold, heat, ultrasound, needles or medicine are utilized in treating the pain. The long lasting objective of the Mckenzie exercises for back pain is to edify patients experiencing back and neck pains on ways that they can use to treat and manage the pain they feel using exercises among other strategies. Other objectives include:-

Lessens pain quickly.

Restores to ordinary functioning of routine activities.

Diminishes the perils of chronic pain (steer clear of painful movements and postures).

Diminishes the amount of spine specialists visits intended for consultations.

The progression of pain backwards from the extreme may not happen in all patients. The McKenzie exercises for back pains are designed to assist people in the area in which the pain centralizes. In addition, for a number of patients, like those suffering from face joint osteoarthritis or lumbar spinal stenosis, stretching the spine can essentially add to their pain. Now you are aware of all there is to know about the Mckenzie exercises for back pain all that is remaining is your decision.
