Resident Evil (2026) Movie Review: Evil Without the Rules

A movie adaptation of a video game has always been a huge risk. There's the fan-service aspect that can force a narrative into a very limiting situation while deviating too far from the source material can immediately turn fans against the film. Zach Cregger's take on Resident Evil goes all-in on breaking away from the video game franchise. And yes, the reality is that this could have been a movie completely unrelated to Resident Evil and it would still work. Some may find this an unacceptable extreme but for us, it means what we get is a purely entertaining and fun experience from start to finish.

About to end his shift, medical courier Bryan (Austin Abrams) is suddenly tasked with transporting a priority package to Raccoon City. Thinking that someone's life might be at stake, he hesitantly accepts the job. As he makes his way through his route, the night quickly devolves into chaos. The closer he gets to his destination, the more his routine delivery turns into a terrifying journey filled with mayhem, destruction, and monsters.

If you're familiar with Zach Cregger's previous work, Resident Evil falls perfectly into place with his style. The biggest surprise for us isn't the film's lack of connection to the video game franchise but how effectively Cregger mixes comedy into the horror. Resident Evil is just as funny as it is terrifying, and those small injections of comedy provide the perfect breathing room between all the pent-up tension from scene to scene. The creatures are also a highlight bringing some genuinely memorable and disturbing moments to the film.

Austin Abrams also delivers a performance that perfectly fits Bryan, an aloof courier who is simply determined to complete his delivery at all costs. His relatively ordinary character works well against the increasingly insane situation unfolding around him giving the film an entertaining everyman perspective as everything spirals completely out of control minute by minute.

There are still misses though. While the film's raw and straightforward execution makes it a lot of fun, there's very little buildup when it comes to the other characters or the origins of the zombie outbreak. There are plenty of Easter eggs and references for fans of the games but for the most part, that's where the connection ends. The straightforward nature of the story also means there's little depth or a deeper emotional connection to the material.

So, is this a better Resident Evil adaptation? For us, it's a definite yes. While its connection to the video game franchise is surprisingly small, the creativity and fun factor are through the roof. We'd take a film that understands how to be entertaining on its own over a forced adaptation that prioritizes familiarity at the expense of everything else. Resident Evil may not be the adaptation some fans were expecting but that's precisely why it works for us. It takes the name, the occasional Easter egg, and the spirit of survival horror, then runs wild with them.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall (2026) Movie Review: Die-Hard Dark Knight

It's been a while since we last caught up with a DC Universe Animated Original Movie and what a way to return. Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall takes a deep dive into a superhero we already know so well, but still manages to offer a compelling interpretation. Its darker tone, relatable material, fantastical elements, and engaging character arc all come together to make this an extremely satisfying watch. Our only complaint is that it had to end. As the first part of a planned trilogy, the film leaves audiences hanging and craving more.

When an explosion occurs at Arkham Asylum, all its inmates escape and unleash chaos across Gotham City. As Batman (voiced by Anson Mount) once again tries to save the city, the responsibility begins to take a toll on him, both physically and mentally. At his lowest point, he encounters a new nemesis one who calls himself Bane (voiced by Michael Mando).

At less than 80 minutes, you'll probably wonder why this story needed to be divided into a trilogy. The frustration however comes from how compelling Knightfall Part 1 is. Despite its short runtime, the film gives us a satisfying backstory for Bane and presents a very different version of the Dark Knight from the one we're used to seeing in live-action films. This Batman is clearly struggling, even more flawed, and the film puts his issues front and center. He isn't the idealized hero some audiences might expect and his stubborn refusal to ask for help or even take a moment to rest becomes a major driving force of the Knightfall Part 1 narrative. It adds a surprising amount of nuance to his character and creates a compelling point of conflict that we didn't anticipate coming into the film.

The film also doesn't hold back when it comes to violence and gore. Its gruesome deaths give the story a sense of weight and realism while the human cost of the chaos makes these moments more impactful. Considering that this is an animated feature, the brutality is even more striking. Seeing several villains from Batman's past was another highlight, although the short runtime means that some of these encounters feel a little rushed. Likewise, the same can be said for the character of Jean-Paul Valley whose purpose is still unclear by the time the credits roll. Still, Knightfall Part 1 delivers a memorable animated Dark Knight experience. It may not tell a complete story just yet but it makes the most of its first chapter and leaves us eager to see what comes next.

Turning Point: Generation 9/11 (2026) Documentary Review: A Generation Shaped by 9/11

Where were you when 9/11 happened? It's a question we never really gave much thought to. It's easy to assume that all of us are old enough to remember exactly what happened 25 years ago. But Turning Point: Generation 9/11 offers a perspective we never really considered. Instead of focusing solely on the victims or perpetrators of the attacks, the documentary looks at the children and young adults who grew up in its shadow as well as the people who became part of the War on Terror that followed.

Twenty-five years after 9/11, the documentary brings together children of victims, journalists, Marines, young Afghans, and others whose lives were shaped by that day and the decisions that followed. Together, their stories reveal how an entire generation came of age in a world fundamentally changed by September 11.

We've seen countless documentaries and films about 9/11, so we honestly wondered what else could be said about the tragedy on its 25th anniversary. Turning Point: Generation 9/11 surprised us. Rather than simply revisiting what happened on that day, it takes a much longer view of its consequences. In many ways, the documentary isn't really about September 11 at all and it's about everything that came after and how it has changed our world. That's what makes this documentary particularly compelling. It doesn't limit the conversation to one perspective. We hear from the children of actual victims, soldiers who served during different periods of the War on Terror, journalists, and even Afghans who experienced the consequences from an entirely different side of the conflict. Giving these people a voice adds new layers and more authenticity to a tragedy that we thought we already knew everything about.

The result is thought-provoking and genuinely moving content. At the same time though, we couldn't help but feel that some of these stories deserved more time. The documentary introduces a lot of important perspectives, but sometimes it feels like it only scratches the surface of them. We also felt that this might have worked even better as a series. With so many people, perspectives, and decades of history to cover, the documentary occasionally feels constrained by its runtime.

Still, Turning Point: Generation 9/11 manages to do something we didn't expect from another documentary about 9/11. It reminds us that the tragedy isn't simply a moment frozen in history - and maybe it's not as emotionally impactful for the next generation. But its impact continues to shape our world some good but some significantly bad.

The Runner (2026) Movie Review

The Runner (2026) Movie Review: Run, Rinse, Repeat

Watching someone run around for almost 90 minutes doesn't exactly sound like a good time. But if 2025's The Running Man proved anything, it's that a movie built around running can still be intense and entertaining. The Runner however lacks the creativity and imagination to make its premise work. The film feels like a slog and completely devoid of the high-stakes tension it desperately needs. Things happen, surprises are revealed, and the stakes are constantly raised but do we really care? Even as a mindless time-waster, there are better ways to spend your time.

Attorney Maia Martin (Gal Gadot) always goes for a run after taking her son to school and before heading to work. Today is a particularly important day as her star witness is set to testify against a powerful crime boss. During her run, Maia receives a call from an unknown person who reveals that her son, Noah (Rory Wilmot), has been kidnapped. To save him, she must race across London and kill her witness within an hour.

You might assume that Gal Gadot's performance is the biggest problem with The Runner. While her stiff and stilted delivery certainly doesn't help, there are far bigger issues with the film. The biggest problem for us is the writing. The narrative is barebones and straightforward but it's also riddled with sloppy decisions and logical loopholes. The big revelation toward the end is certainly a surprise but for all the wrong reasons. For a film centered around something as grounded and physical as running, far too many events unfold in ways that feel completely farcical and unbelievable.

The script doesn't help either. The Runner is filled with ridiculous one-liners that had us laughing and shaking our heads at the same time. There's a scene in a church near the middle of the film that perfectly captures the film's inability to take its own premise seriously in the right way. Instead of building tension, moments like these repeatedly pull us out of the story and further push the silliness of the whole experience. Then there's the repetition. We lost count of how many times Maia had to steal something, run away from her latest obstacle, and repeat the process. What might have worked once or twice quickly becomes the film's default way of moving the story forward. By the third or fourth time, it becomes less thrilling and more laughable.

And that's ultimately the problem with The Runner. It has a simple premise that could have made for a tense and entertaining thriller, but the weak writing, unbelievable plot developments, repetitive action, and lack of emotional stakes constantly work against it. The film keeps running but it never really gets anywhere.

The Whisper Man (2026) Movie Review

The Whisper Man (2026) Movie Review: This Ain't No Hannibal Lecter

Seeing the cast assembled for The Whisper Man, we expected a lot from the film. Unfortunately, what we get is a perplexing and underwhelming experience that never finds the human connection needed to make its story work. Disjointed, pedestrian, and often boring, The Whisper Man feels like a film that had all the ingredients to become a compelling thriller but never manages to put them together. It certainly isn't the modern-day equivalent of The Silence of the Lambs that it could have been.

When the body of a young boy is discovered with a shirt wrapped around his head, the crime scene bears an unsettling resemblance to the modus operandi of serial killer Frank Carter known as the Whisper Man. The problem is that Carter is locked away and couldn't have committed the murder himself. Desperate for answers, the detectives seek the help of Peter Willis, a retired detective who originally caught Carter. Peter refuses to help but when his nephew becomes the next victim, he has no choice but to confront the case and the demons he has spent years trying to forget.

It's difficult to pinpoint just one thing that makes The Whisper Man a failure because there are simply too many problems to choose from. But three things particularly irked us while watching the film.

First, the movie takes itself far too seriously, making it difficult to connect with its characters. For a story built around murder and an intimate relationship between a detective and a notorious killer, there is surprisingly little emotional weight. We never felt particularly invested in Peter, the victims, or even Frank Carter. The film wants us to care about the darkness surrounding these characters but it rarely gives us any chance or reason to actually care.

Second, while the story isn't necessarily predictable, there's also very little that feels fresh or memorable about its narrative. Nearly two hours go by without delivering a genuine "wow" moment. The mystery unfolds and the film continues toward its conclusion but we never felt pulled into the investigation. Instead of feeling like participants in the story, we felt like passengers simply watching things happen.

This is where the comparison to The Silence of the Lambs becomes particularly frustrating. That film understood that a psychological thriller isn't just about the serial killer or the gruesome crimes. What made it so effective was the tension and emotional connection between its characters. There are elements here that should have worked. A notorious serial killer behind bars, a detective haunted by the case that put him there and a fragmented relationship with his son, and a new series of murders should be the foundation for a tense and atmospheric thriller - but nope. The Whisper Man isn't necessarily a terrible idea but it is simply a frustrating execution of one.

Death of the Pastor's Wife (2026) Series Review: A Tale Without Winners

There are some tales that are just harrowing and sad without any real redemption stories. Death of the Pastor's Wife is one such tale that's as gripping as it is difficult to watch. The story of Mica Miller and the circumstances surrounding her death are laid out in plain sight. It's not so much a mystery as it is a story of frustration, as we already know the cause of death and are left to understand the circumstances that led to it.

Mica Miller, the wife of John Paul "JP" Miller, founder of Solid Rock Church, makes a 911 call from a secluded forest park. She says that she plans to take her own life and calls the authorities to let them know where her body can be found. Soon, that threat becomes a reality and Mica is dead. Did she die by suicide, or was she murdered? More importantly, what were the circumstances that led her down this dark path, far removed from the Christian life she had lived for so long?

There are a lot of documentaries that can feel fabricated, spinning more drama than what actually happened. What makes Death of the Pastor's Wife work is that it feels straightforward and real. And that's actually more disturbing because you know that what's being presented is reality making the circumstances surrounding Mica's death even more heartbreaking. The three-episode run for this true-crime series feels well-paced. The first episode sets up the backstory of how Mica and JP met and eventually ended up together. The second focuses on their tumultuous marriage, while the final episode follows Mica as she tries to become fully independent from her husband. It's simple, it's clear, and despite all the depressing material, we still found ourselves engrossed and engaged.

Since this is a recent case, the story isn't complete, so some viewers may find the lack of a definitive conclusion even more frustrating. The reality is that while the series may leave us with a strong impression of what happened, there is still no clear resolution - only a victim and family and friends (and viewers) left searching for more concrete answers. Hopefully, with this documentary bringing renewed attention to Mica's story, justice can eventually be served. More than anything, Death of the Pastor's Wife is a sobering reminder of how difficult it can be to see what happens behind closed doors and how important it is to question those we place our trust in.

The Dog Stars (2026) Movie Review: Simply Fails to Stand Out

We personally had high expectations for The Dog Stars, despite how muted its marketing and trailers may have seemed. With Ridley Scott at the helm and a cast that includes Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley, the film had all the ingredients for something special which is a post-apocalyptic story that could blend action, survival, drama, and even romance. Unfortunately, what we ultimately get is almost exactly what the marketing suggested: muted. Throughout its runtime, we kept waiting for something significant or exciting to happen but the film commits heavily to its slow-burn approach and rushes its conclusion for some reason. Don't get us wrong, we understood what The Dog Stars was trying to accomplish. The problem is that its execution never quite justifies the patience it asks from its audience.

Set after a devastating flu pandemic, Hig (Jacob Elordi) is a former civilian pilot and mechanic who lives in isolation with Bangley (Josh Brolin), a hardened former Marine. Their daily lives revolve around survival, protecting their home, and dealing with the occasional threat from the outside world. Hig holds on to the hope that there might be something more beyond their isolated existence. When he receives a mysterious radio transmission, he decides to follow the signal toward Grand Junction, believing it could lead him to something worth risking his safety.

With so much post-apocalyptic material already out there, standing out in the genre is difficult. The Dog Stars initially finds an interesting way to do so by largely putting the apocalypse itself in the background. Instead of focusing on the destruction of civilization, the film spends much of its first half exploring what it actually means to live after the world has ended. That slower approach actually worked for us. Rather than feeling like filler, these moments gave us time to think about what survival would realistically look like. The film's strongest quality is its ability to make this post-apocalyptic world feel grounded and real. Jacob Elordi is particularly effective as Hig bringing a quiet vulnerability to a character who is clearly searching for something beyond just surviving.

Unfortunately, the film begins to lose its identity in the second half. Once Hig encounters more survivors and the story starts moving toward a more traditional post-apocalyptic action narrative, the meticulousness that made the earlier portions so effective disappears. The pacing suddenly becomes rushed, the action feels underwhelming, and the film's once-grounded atmosphere gives way to something much more conventional and unconvincing. And that's where the biggest disappointment is. The slow buildup isn't the problem but that the eventual payoff doesn't match the invested time. All that patience leads to a second half that feels rushed and surprisingly ordinary.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie (2026) Movie Review: Fun for the Young Ones

It's hard to review films like Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie because we naturally see them through the lens of adults. This is the kind of experience that is specifically designed to please its target audience and frankly, no one else. Judging by our kids' reactions, we know this was simple, colorful, and ultimately a great time for them. As adults, however, it's nothing particularly special or groundbreaking. But are we really going into the cinema expecting greatness or are we expecting something that will entertain our young ones instead?

After their ship gets caught in a mysterious storm, the PAW Patrol pups crash-land on an uncharted tropical island filled with dinosaurs. When PAW Patrol's archrival, Mayor Humdinger is released from prison, he discovers that he can mine precious diamonds on the island. As he begins exploiting its resources, he inadvertently causes a dormant volcano to erupt. The pups must find a way to save the island's inhabitants and stop Humdinger once again.

One thing we noticed about Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie is the significant step up in its visuals. This is the best-looking version of the franchise we've seen yet, with visual effects that genuinely surprised us with their quality. It's nowhere near Pixar levels but there are moments that make you appreciate the value of having a bigger budget to bring the pups to the big screen. Moving the pups into a prehistoric setting also makes things more interesting than the usual city-based rescues, giving the film a sense of adventure that feels fresh for the franchise.

The story is still fairly barebones if we're being honest but we also felt it was a step up from previous entries. The film provides a quick look into Marshall's origins and his personal story ties nicely into the overall narrative and the message the movie wants to deliver. It gives the character a little more depth while keeping things simple enough for its young audience to follow. While Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie is far from groundbreaking, it succeeds at what it sets out to do. It's colorful, entertaining, and packed with enough dinosaurs and adventure to keep the kids engaged. For the adults accompanying them, it's passable enough to make the experience enjoyable without becoming a chore.

Don't Say Good Luck (2026) Movie Review: Drama-Lite

We were surprised to find out that Don't Say Good Luck was produced by Adam Sandler and stars his daughter, Sunny Sandler. With that in mind, we didn't expect much from the film. But the Sandlers and serious films have proven to be a winning combination, and Don't Say Good Luck continues that streak. It's emotionally impactful and thought-provoking, with musical sequences that effectively heighten the drama even further.

Sophie (Sunny Sandler) is a 16-year-old who has just landed the leading role in her high school's production of the Broadway musical Waitress. But as she prepares for the role, she discovers that her mother (Melanie Lynskey) is dying of cancer. Sophie must now decide whether to put her high school dreams on hold to spend more time with her mother.

We wouldn't say that Don't Say Good Luck is a complete film experience. In fact, one of our biggest gripes is that it does the bare minimum when it comes to exploring the complexities of its premise. At around 90 minutes long, the film feels a little too short and streamlined. It spends very little time developing the intricacies of modern teenage life, where Sophie has to balance crushes, broken friendships, family drama, and even seemingly simple school activities that can feel life-changing at that age. The film could have benefited from spending more time exploring Sophie's relationship with her mother and the difficult choices she had to face. Instead, it often moves quickly from one emotional beat to another. But even this trimmed-down approach still manages to be moving and emotionally resonant.

At the center of it all is Sunny Sandler, whose performance captures Sophie's immature vulnerability and emotional uncertainty. We were also pleasantly surprised by how well her musical performances turned out to be with the film's climactic scene an emotional banger. Ultimately, Don't Say Good Luck may be a little too light when it comes to exploring the depth of its premise but it still manages to make a lot of emotional impact. It may not be a complete drama, but what it does deliver is sincere, heartfelt, and surprisingly effective.

Season 2 of NBA on Prime tips off with a doubleheader on October 24 beginning with reigning World Champion New York Knicks vs the Boston Celtics at 7AM PHT. The second game will feature the Houston Rockets facing the Western Conference Champion San Antonio Spurs at 9:30AM. PHT. Disney+ has officially greenlit an original anime series based on the video game franchise Kingdom Hearts (working title). Announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the series is being developed in close partnership with original game creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix. Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon (2026) Movie Review: Finding Meaning in the Unanswered

Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon (This, That and Everything in Between) is a confounding film. On one hand, its narrative plays with familiar tropes particularly with the sudden return of an estranged mother to her family. On the other hand, it completely breaks expectations with how it reveals (or deliberately doesn't reveal) the real hows and whys behind its characters. It's the kind of film that will likely divide audiences with some appreciating it for being raw and honest while others may find it incomplete and feel shortchanged by its lack of answers. For us, we appreciate what it is trying to accomplish and while imperfect, most of it is both compelling and moving.

Joanne or Jo for short, (Jodi Sta. Maria), is a TV writer who has built a successful life for herself after her mother left her almost three decades ago. But her carefully constructed world begins to unravel when her estranged mother, Paz (Agot Isidro) suddenly resurfaces with a secret that changes everything. Can Jo finally find the answers to the questions that have haunted her since she was just 10 years old?

We're not really in a position to say that we fully understood the struggles of each main character in Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon. What we do know is that both are complicated and deeply layered characters portrayed spectacularly by Jodi Sta. Maria and Agot Isidro. The two veteran actors' lack of chemistry is actually perfect because, despite being related, Jo and Paz barely know each other. Jo's stoicism and Paz's blunt straightforwardness become the perfect vehicles for the emotional tension that eventually reaches a boiling point near the film's end.

However, some viewers may be surprised by how incomplete Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon feels by the time the credits roll. The film takes an unconventional approach to its narrative, never fully explaining or resolving everything. We get glimpses into why Paz left and why she has suddenly returned but we never learn the complete story behind either character. And obviously that's intentional. The film reflects real life, where sometimes we simply act, love, and forgive without having all the answers because, in some cases, it feels like the right thing to do. And perhaps the small understanding that Jo (and we as the audience gain) is enough to realize that Paz isn't the evil mother she initially appears to be. There is something pure and raw about that realization.

Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon may leave some viewers wanting more, but for us, its willingness to embrace uncertainty is also what makes it special. It may not provide all the answers but understanding someone doesn't necessarily mean knowing everything about them.

The Last House (2026) Movie Review: Family Drama More Than Sci-Fi

Catching the trailer for The Last House recently, we found ourselves intrigued. We were hopeful that this could be another great entry from Netflix especially with a premise that seemed to have plenty of potential. While the film manages to make things interesting during its first half, it eventually goes beyond what we could accept, even for a science fiction-based narrative. The lack of clear explanations and implausibility ultimately ruins the experience turning what could have been a compelling sci-fi thriller into a shallow family drama built around clearly-fabricated tension.

Jason (Wagner Moura) returns to his suburban home with his wife, Ann (Greta Lee), their two children, Graham and Ruth, and the family dog, Cassidy after a fishing trip. When it starts to rain and they attempt to leave, they discover that they are trapped inside their home. The doors have been sealed shut, the windows cannot be opened or broken, no electronic devices work, and their neighbors are similarly confined to their houses. As the days pass, the family must find a way to survive while trying to understand what is happening around them.

The problem isn't necessarily that the premise is impossible. Science fiction has always asked audiences to accept extraordinary concepts. What matters is whether a film establishes enough rules and explanations to make it believable within its own logic. Unfortunately, The Last House fails in this regard. The film focuses more on developing its family drama than exploring the post-apocalyptic scenario at the heart of its story. We never get a satisfying explanation of who or what is responsible for what is happening to humanity. We are given hints but there is little meaningful exploration of the why, what, and consequences. By the time the ending arrives, everything is resolved in a rushed unsatisfying manner.

The strongest aspect of the film is its cast. Wagner Moura and Greta Lee do their best with the material and there are moments when their performances manage to create genuine emotion. The first hour, in particular, feels strangely reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic when families were suddenly forced to stay home and adapt to an uncertain new reality. These intimate moments work because they focus on something grounded and relatable.

Overall, The Last House is more family drama than science fiction and that's ultimately where it falls short for us. The premise has plenty of potential but the film never develops its central mystery or establishes enough logic to make its world convincing. What could have been an intriguing sci-fi survival story instead becomes a disappointing experience that leaves far too many questions unanswered.

Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins (2025) Movie Review: A Mixed Bag

It's been a while since we last watched a Shake, Rattle & Roll film. The franchise was a staple of our childhood, but its recent entries haven't really piqued our interest. With Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins arriving on Netflix, we decided it was finally time to revisit the latest entry in the series. Unfortunately, the magic that once made the franchise a part of our childhood feels largely absent, resulting in an anthology that delivers a lukewarm and rarely frightening experience.

Evil Origins takes viewers across three different eras in an alternate Philippine history, all connected by an evil entity known as Malum. In 1775, a mysterious chest arrives at a convent unleashing sinister events among the nuns. The story then jumps to 2025, where a Halloween rave turns into a bloodbath as masked killers hunt down the partygoers. Finally, the film leaps to a dystopian 2050, where humanity struggles to survive in a Philippines overrun by aswangs.

On paper, the concept is one of the anthology's strongest ideas. A horror story spanning centuries and linked by a single malevolent force promises a richer mythology than previous installments. Sadly, the film barely scratches the surface of Malum's origins or motivations. Beyond establishing it as an ancient evil that gradually extends its influence through time, the narrative offers nothing else. As a result, the connections between the three stories feel superficial, making the anthology seem more like three loosely related stories than one cohesive experience.

At least, each segment embraces a distinct identity, with the first leaning into supernatural horror, the second becoming a full-fledged slasher, and the third attempting a post-apocalyptic zombie-esque film. The quality of these stories varies considerably. The 1775 segment starts with an eerie premise and an atmospheric setting but ultimately abandons its suspense in favor of a dumb down killing spree. The 2025 chapter is easily the standout in the anthology delivering the strongest narrative, entertaining slasher elements, and the film's most effective use of gore. Unfortunately, the 2050 finale is a disappointing conclusion with weak performances, unconvincing action, and horror that's just missing.

As a whole, Evil Origins has an intriguing premise and flashes of creativity but it rarely capitalizes on its potential. Instead of crafting a compelling mythology that unites its three timelines, it settles for a collection of uneven stories that only occasionally entertain.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle (2025) Movie Review: This Was Amazing

We have to admit, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle was our first real dive into the franchise. Without having the time to watch the entire anime series or its previous films, we were worried that we'd be completely clueless. Surprisingly, that wasn't the case and Infinity Castle still manages to stand on its own as a compelling watch. Beyond its breathtaking visuals and jaw-dropping action, what impressed us most was how much character development unfolds amidst the chaos. It takes its time and while this is clearly only the beginning, it remains an immensely satisfying cinematic experience.

As Muzan Kibutsuji launches his attack on the Ubuyashiki Mansion, Tanjiro Kamado and the elite Hashira find themselves pulled into the mysterious Infinity Castle - the demons' ever-shifting stronghold. Trapped inside, the Demon Slayer Corps must confront Muzan's most powerful followers in a series of brutal battles that will determine the fate of humanity.

Infinity Castle excels at balancing spectacular action with meaningful storytelling. Despite the relentless pace, the film never feels like it's rushing from one fight to the next. Instead, it frequently pauses to explore the pasts of both its heroes and its villains. While some viewers may find the constant transitions between battles and flashbacks disruptive, we found it to be one of the film's strengths. The backstories give every confrontation genuine emotional and dramatic weight revealing that even the demons carry tragic histories that shaped the choices they made.

Visually, the film is extraordinary delivering breathtaking animation, fluid choreography, and a grand realization of the Infinity Castle. Our only real criticism for the film is it doesn't function as a complete story. By the time the credits roll, it feels like the film is only getting started. While major battles receive satisfying conclusions, the larger conflict remains unresolved, making this feel more like the opening chapter of a more epic story. Even so, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is a compelling experience and one we highly-recommend.

Get ready for an 80s-inspired throwback that brings prehistoric chaos right to the suburbs. The End of Oak Street is officially heading to theaters next week, August 12, 2026. Produced by legendary filmmaker J.J. Abrams and written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows), has got us excited for its potential to be a sleeper hit.

At the center of the story is the Platt family, played by an powerhouse cast featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, alongside rising young stars Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. "The cast is phenomenal," shares producer J.J. Abrams. "I’ve known Anne a little bit for a long time and have wanted to work with her forever. Ewan as well. So, this was a bit of a dream to get a chance to work with them both."

Director David Robert Mitchell was equally thrilled with the dynamic between Hathaway and McGregor as parents Greg and Denise Platt. Mitchell promises audiences will see a totally new side of Hathaway as she navigates intense moments of suspense, fear, and sheer survival instincts. "When we started to get to the suspense and danger and fear, she took it to another level," Mitchell says of Hathaway’s performance. "It was something that I hadn’t seen her do, and it was really exciting... strength, fear, pain—it’s believable, it’s real."

For McGregor, stepping into the role meant diving headfirst into high-octane physical stunts—which included dodging prehistoric beasts through suburban front yards. "Fighting with the dinosaurs was always fun to do," McGregor jokes. "Annie and I had some really long runs to do – over gardens, down streets, jumping fences... careful not to put our ankle down a hole. But we had fun doing that."

For Hathaway, the film’s charm lies in its retro feel, tapping into the classic "family horror" and adventure movies of decades past. "One of the things I love about this film is that it does remind me of those wonderful films from the ’80s," Hathaway explains. "Movies that were full of suspense, movies that you could watch with your parents... You felt grown up and sophisticated that you got to watch this movie where scary things were going on."

The film revolves around a mysterious cosmic event which suddenly rips Oak Street out of normal suburbia and drops the neighborhood into an unrecognizable, prehistoric environment, the Platt family must stick together to survive the dangers lurking right outside their front door.

Distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, The End of Oak Street hits theaters and IMAX internationally starting August 12, 2026, and in North America on August 14, 2026.
