Notorious: Underground Movie Review

The Nineties was known for a lot of things. There was the dominance of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, "Friends" was on for more than half of the decade and the internet as we know it today was on its infancy. In music alone, boy bands ruled, the Spice Girls were everywhere, Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana became an icon and there was the East Coast-West Coast feud in rap music. As we all know, it became really bloody in the end when two rap legends were gunned down - Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. The film "Notorious" tackles the life of the latter from his childhood to the pinnacle of his genre. Is "Notorious" a worthy biopic of the legend of Biggie Smalls? Read on to find out the answer.

"Notorious" tells the story of murdered rapper Notorious B.I.G. We start off from Chris Wallace a.k.a. Biggie Smalls, a boy who is torn between being a good and obedient son to his mother Voletta, and his aspirations to become a rapper. Soon the young man chooses his dream while also getting into the world of drug dealing. All seems well until Chris is caught on a drug bust and spends time in jail. After finishing his jail time, one of Chris' friends tells him that he has a talent for the mic and introduces him to Sean Combs - better known as Puff Daddy. Sean decides to sign Chris just as long as he promises to quit drug dealing. Sean eventually creates Bad Boy Records and this is where Chris' career takes a gigantic leap to fame.

"Notorious" has its good parts and bad parts but ironically, most of the good things are not essential parts of a normal flick. As a movie and more so a biopic, the film fails and the reason is that the film seems really rushed and scenes were not explained well. One scene we find Chris in love with Li'l Kim and the next he is already marrying Faith Evans. This actually happens countless times in the movie and it would have been more acceptable if the running time was longer but the story was developed further. As for the good parts, the soundtrack was phenomenal which translates well with the rap portions in the movie. This is probably the selling point of the film but logic says why not just buy a CD or the said tracks in iTunes. Bottom line, this is less than your typical biopic film and that is not saying much from the get-go. If you want to know Notorious B.I.G, this might be a good, simplistic start but a man's life isn't a simple battle of black and white. Some of those who already know his story will definitely find the film lacking in many areas.

Why you should watch it:
- rap parts were done outstandingly and the music is the main selling point for this film
- really simple story of a man who started from nothing and ended up being the best: simplicity is the key

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- the film tags itself as a biopic but it lacks depth in presenting its main character's life
- feels like the different scenes are rushed and not interspersed very well

The Rapture of Fe(Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe) is Now Available on Local Cinemas

"The Rapture of Fe" or locally known as "Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe" will be shown in selected local cinemas starting November 11, 2009. For now, these cinemas are Robinson's Galleria and Cinema Cebu. It stars Irma Adlawan as the main protagonist Fe and Nonie Buencamino as her husband. The film has been classified R18 by the MTRCB. To celebrate this, we will repost our analysis of the movie for the 2009 Cinemalaya Film Fest after the jump.

Cinemalaya is a film festival held yearly to celebrate, promote and help grow the independent film industry in the Philippines. It has been successfully growing in popularity since its inception five years ago and is now considered to be one of the biggest film festivals in the country. The setup: grant $10,000 to ten independent film makers. Directors, writers and what-not submit their scripts and only ten scripts will be chosen. So you can say, that the films selected are the best of the bunch for a given year and the quality and caliber of scripts and plots are top notch. It has always been a dream for us to attend Cinemalaya - unlucky for us, we never had the time nor opportunity to do so. As fate may have it, we got invited to a screening of one of the entries - "The Rapture of Fe"("Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe"). "The Rapture of Fe" centers around Fe (Irma Adlawan). Every morning, Fe mysteriously receives a basket of black fruits. Thinking these are from her abusive husband Dante (Nonie Buencamino), she tells this to him. Unfortunately, this was not from Dante and this only quells his suspicions of Fe having a secret lover. Day by day, the basket comes closer to their doorstep and Fe decides to keep this to herself to avoid Dante getting mad. One day, Fe turns to her former suitor Arturo (TJ Trinidad). When Fe tries to persuade Arturo to elope with her, she discovers that Arturo has other plans for their family business and denies her request. Caught between an abusive husband and a suitor who has different plans, Fe has to decide - will she turn to the mysterious suitor who might just be a figment of her imagination or will she stay with the real men in her life who cannot give her the love or happiness she craves?

"The Rapture of Fe" is a relief for us. Knowing how constricted Philippine cinema can be, it is a refreshing feeling to see how independent films can go beyond the usual homosexual theme. The film was good despite knowing that they had a very tight budget in doing it. Although some scenes made us feel out of place, most of it was gripping. The acting was superb especially with the character of Fe so props to Irma Adlawan. For us, a first showing is not enough to grasp the significance of major scenes and that is one quality that great films have - knowing that it could stand a second, a third and any subsequent showings while people can still learn something new. It is a film that gives something back - a movie that actually tries to make you think and ponder about women, about society, about our intrepid country and maybe just about how you perceive life and happiness. "The Rapture of Fe" might not be for everyone especially those who are mainly interested in mainstream films. We could clearly see why this is one of the scripts that were picked up – the movie allows you to give it your own interpretation and explore possible meanings of the scenes presented. So why not jump in and escape to the world of Fe?

Law Abiding Citizen: Movie Review

How many times have we heard people complain about how the justice system is flawed time and time again? Countless! "Law Abiding Citizen" tackles this same issue but now, instead of doing nothing, one person decides t0 seek revenge and put matters in his own hands. This film, we believe, strives to tackle issues on the American justice system while packaging it into an action-packed thriller. Can "Law Abiding Citizen" deliver in this light? Well, read on to find out our final rating.

Clyde Shelton's (Gerard Butler) wife and daughter are raped and murdered in front of him. Due to a loophole in the DNA sample gathered during the investigation, Clyde's lawyer, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), informs him that they should convict only one of the burglars and let the other one go because he will testify against his partner. If they don't pursue a plea bargain, they might lose the case. Unknown to Nick, the one testifying is actually the one who raped and killed Clyde's family. Ten years later, the released convict is murdered viciously. Nick discovers that Clyde is actually the one who did the killing and tries to get a confession from him as they have no hard evidence to convict Clyde. Soon they discover though that Clyde is not what they thought him to be and does not know what he is capable of doing to all those who have done him wrong.

"Law Abiding Citizen" will make you think - think if justice was really served and think what is actually causing all of the mayhem in the film. For us, that is a good thing because it built a lot of suspense and thrills while watching it. Major shifts in the story did surprise us but the story just became too over-the-top. It seems that the writers tried to be too clever and failed. Instead the film feels like it was pushed too much towards a certain side that at some point, it even seems hilarious already. It did not help that the acting was lackluster for Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx -it looks like both of them are not fit for their characters on the big screen (or they were just plain not into the film). It is good though that their supporting cast fared a lot better than them. In the end, this movie is flawed in big areas but it does not diminish the fact that people will still enjoy this movie.

Why you should watch it:
- this movie will make you think while watching it - both on the moral issues it tackles and what's actually causing all the mayhem
- suspenseful at times and has lots of surprises that will make you gasp

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- for us, the acting of the two main characters were stale considering that they are big name actors
- the story was just pushing too much towards a certain side making it somewhat hilarious by the end of the movie

More Than a Game: Movie Review

A documentary about Lebron James and his high school cohorts intrigues us indeed. It was made before stardom struck Lebron but one cannot rub off the feeling that this was released just to ride on his fame and fortune. Hopefully we are wrong but we won't be surprised if "More Than a Game" will just be primarily about Lebron and no one else (which might affect its overall quality for sure). We are doubtful as well how this would be successful as film documentaries definitely have a knack for becoming boring and uninspiring. Can "More Than a Game" be more than what we expect it to be? Jump the gun to find out our verdict.

"More Than a Game" chronicles the life of five kids - kids who grew up to be one of the best high school lineups in America's history with one unlikely coach who went with them all the way. The team is composed of Lebron James (the star of the team and eventually becoming an NBA superstar after high school), Dru Joyce III (the smallest of the bunch but the one with the biggest heart), Sian Cotton, Romeo Travis (the troubled one) and Willie McGee. They are known as the Fab Five and we will experience their trials and tribulations from an unknown upstart into becoming the top team in the U.S.

What we can say about "More Than a Game" is that it lived up against our expectations and added so much more. Some may argue that this could have been presented as a documentary on television but we actually do not mind because it was really that good. It did not bore us and most of the time, we were up on our feet with suspense on what will happen next on screen. That shows how good the pacing for this film documentary is. The visual style was great, the audio and presentation was stupendous and the interviews even better. We were also happy to see that it was not a "Lebron plus the other four" documentary as each player got equal narratives - even the coach's life was presented perfectly. The only sad part about "More Than a Game" is it had to end and that it is on a limited release here in our country.

- it was never boring even suspenseful at times
- an inside look on how basketball is truly more than a game plus the interviews were really great
- it is not all King James here as all the Fab Five got equal narratives

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- it could have been shown on television and the experience would have been the same

Moon: Underground Movie Review

Before, a lot of people believed that there was a man on the Moon. Some even thought that the Moon was made of cheese. Even now in modern times a few of us still acknowledge that the Moon has an effect not only on the tides but on man’s behavior as well. It is obvious that the Moon has and will always intrigue man. “Moon” tackles the futuristic reality that the lunar landscape could serve as a resource for man’s hunger for energy and more. Can “Moon” make a desolate place like the Moon suspenseful? Read on to find out.

In the not so distant future, Earthlings have finally solved the energy problem that has plagued it since the dawn of Industrialism with Helium 3. Helium 3 is being cultivated at the dark side of the Moon and at the center of this extraction is Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell). His contract with Lunar Industries is almost up and he is excited to go back to Earth since he has been alone on the Moon from the start. With him is GERTY (Kevin Spacey), the Lunar Base’s robot who serves as caretaker and companion of Sam. Two weeks before his contract completion, Sam is involved in an accident when he sees the ghostly apparition of a girl while going to the Helium 3 harvester. He awakens at the infirmary not remembering what happened but soon discovers he is not alone. Sam’s world will soon take a wild twist of fate w3hen he needs to come to grips with the truth.

“Moon” is not your typical sci-fi film and this becomes so true when you come face-to-face with its plot. No, there are no aliens, no gunship battles or even whacked-out robots that the main protagonist has to go against with. This film is a perfect example of how the narrative and superb acting come into play to make a film that is exciting and gripping without the usual dose of big bangs and explosions. Some people though may find it predictable. Also, some might be put off with its slow pace - those who really hate deep, philosophical films – might not enjoy it as much. Overall, “Moon” is one of the best sci-fi films we have seen in recent times and we could even say that it is one of the best ever.

Why you should watch it:
- this is not your usual sci-fi film as there are no aliens or gunship battles or whacked-out robots
- what it lacks in action it delivers in story and ambience and superb acting
- so good that it ranks as one of the best sci-fi films of all time in our books

Why you shouldn’t watch it:
- some people may find it quite predictable
- as there are no action, some people may find this too slow or too philosophical for their tastes

Michael Jackson's This Is It: Movie Review

Who could ever forget June 25, 2009? Everything changed for us that day and we can say that for the whole world as well. We remember waking up and turning on the television just to see something on CNN that was unbelievable; maybe it was our weary eyes from the sleep that caused us to see those words. Words that sunk in eventually – that Michael Jackson was dead. MJ is perhaps the most hated yet most loved performer of all time. When he was alive, controversies ran abound but on his death, everything changed in an instant and this just shows how great the man was. “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” promises to give us a glimpse of the final curtain call MJ announced last year. Can this rehearsal concert be a fitting end to MJ’s legacy?

“Michael Jackson’s This Is It” is composed of snippets from Michael Jackson’s rehearsals on the Staples Center for his upcoming London Tour, “This Is It”. The footage was never intended for public consumption but primarily just for Michael’s private library. “This Is It” will give us a glimpse on what the concert tour should have looked like. It will also let us see Michael Jackson performing just before his untimely death.

Watching “This Is It” will make you stare in awe and amazement. “Is this guy really 50 years old?” was the first thing that came to our minds. This is not the drug-induced, frail, sick man that was portrayed to us by the popular media. No, MJ can still do it - singing, dancing and much, much more. And considering that was yet to be a hundred percent performance, he was truly phenomenal. In some moments, he even looked liked he was doing moves he did when he was in his twenties. The movie also shows how meticulous he was with his music. Even the littlest of notes were scrutinized yet even with his very stringent manner, he was always soft spoken towards his peers.

Visually, the film was almost perfect albeit some videos were shot at a lower bit rate. We wished the film had chosen to go with the high definition videos all the time but considering how limited material they had, this did not really affect our experience. Audio-wise, it was perfect as much as the video was. The film did give justice to Michael Jackson and his music. By the end of the film, it will make you smile and yet some sadness still creeps in as you wonder what could have been if MJ lived (How much amazing “This Is It” was going to become had it pushed through). For us though, we were satisfied with “Michael Jackson’s This Is It”. This is not the dumb-down version some people expected. MJ fans (and even non-fans) should definitely watch this.

- watch the very last gift he wanted to share to the world

- if you expected something much more complete and finished, you might be disappointed.

Ninja Assassin: Sneak Peek

Korean Pop Superstar Rain is back again to raise more noise in Hollywood with his latest Western flick, "Ninja Assassin". The movie follows Raizo (Rain), one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. Raizo, haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, breaks free from them and vanishes. Now, he he is back for vengeance. The Hurt Locker: Movie Review

"The Hurt Locker" has made a lot of noise in the movie world when it first came out and people started labeling it as one of the greatest war films ever made. This was enough to get us hyped up as we wanted to pinpoint exactly what makes it different from the tons of war movies we have seen before. Is it good because of its effects and action sequences? Was it labeled as excellent and powerful because of its ability to document the drama of soldiers at war? Read on to see what we think about the movie after the jump.

Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) has been given the task of taking over Bravo Company’s three man bomb disposal squad in Iraq. The team has only 39 days left and his teammates have no other concern but to stay alive until their last day. However, James proves to be more difficult to work with as he seemingly enjoys the thrill of bomb disposal and has an unconventional approach in dealing with a dangerous situation. He is excellent but most of the time, he shows bravery that may be labeled as wild and suicidal. Can Bravo Company survive their final days in Iraq?

We now get what all the fuss was about this film. We couldn’t see any reason why you wouldn’t like "The Hurt Locker". It depicts modern war in Iraq so vividly, taking us into the depths of emotions of volunteer troops. We genuinely felt tension and fear as we see scenes wherein the team diffuses one bomb after the other, knowing that one can go off any second. A great scene to watch out for is the part wherein the team faced Iraqis head-on in the desert, waiting for hours just to see who would last longer. Over-all, the movie was able to showcase the real drama behind modern war that no amount of gun fighting, loud explosions, or even words could. So take that Michael Bay! This may be the secret behind the beautiful film as it does not need any of the racket or gore to make it effective. This movie, arguably labeled as one of the greatest American war films will be a movie you won’t soon forget.

- best war movie this decade

Law Abiding Citizen: Sneak Peek

The star of "300", Gerard Butler, is poised to surprise audiences once again with his cunning performance as a vengeful family man in murderous rampage. An actor attracted to diversified portrayals, he is starring opposite Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx in the upcoming action-packed thriller "Law Abiding Citizen" where they are pitted against each other in a deadly battle of wits. The plot revolves around murderer Clyde Sheldon (Gerard Butler) who is orchestrating a series of killings in an apparent revenge to the justice system which he believes has not provided enough justice for the massacre of his family. He is the lone survivor of a random home burglary that claimed the lives of his wife and daughter. Amazingly, he is targeting key personalities involved in his case while inside the jail. Before going behind bars, Sheldon was an upright family man, then twistedly transformed into a serial killer by the tragedy. He feels that the Philadelphia prosecutor handling his family's case, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), didn't exhaust all means to penalize one of the suspects by giving him a light sentence for testifying against the latter's accomplice.

Butler spent time with criminologists and explored the psyche of serial killers in preparing for the role. The believable clash between his role and that of Jamie Foxx proved very valuable to the project.The movie also stars Viola Davis, Bruce McGill, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb, Michael Irby and Regina Hall.

Released by Viva International Pictures, "Law Abiding Citizen" opens nationwide on November 4.

(500) Days of Summer: Movie Review

Seeing the movie title "(500) Days of Summer" and hearing about chicks getting excited about it would probably turn most guys off. You can definitely imagine eyes rolling and hearing sighs telling "Not another rom-com!". Well surprisingly, "(500) Days of Summer" is not a romantic comedy and the movie states from the get-go that this is not another love story. What is intriguing about this film is that we just cannot pinpoint what kind of film it is. Is it a drama? Is it purely comedic, satirical in nature? Is it just about life and reality? The definite question though is did it work out all right even with it mixed nature? To find out our answer, read on.

The film can be summed up by it's tagline: "Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't." Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has always believed in fate when it comes to love. In fact, he has waited all his life for that one girl that will sweep him off his feet. One day, Tom gets to see his soul mate in Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). The two couldn’t be more different - Summer doesn’t even think the concept of love exists. Summer eventually proposes that they stop seeing each other. Can Tom move on from this “break-up” or will he eventually do all he can to win Summer back?

"(500) Days of Summer" truly is a remarkable film. It is such a deep and compelling movie that essentially sums up what most of us have endured in love and in life. But even with its near philosophical nature, the tone is light, upbeat and funny. You will never feel bored or overwhelmed even with all the complex scenes that are popping up on screen. The story too is presented on a nonlinear way. The film jumps from the days when Tom and Summer are together to when they are apart. Some people might say that this is a surefire way for the narrative to backfire but actually, it compliments it. There are also scenes where there are non-conventional film styles not seen in mainstream movies (changes in film color, screen splits). What makes this movie special is actually its lack of identity that makes it really flexible for any viewer. You can sit down and watch it as a comedy or you can interpret it as a deep love story. We might not agree that this is not a love story in nature but who cares? And did we mention the wonderful movie soundtrack and the part wherein the movie turns into a musical? Definitely more reasons for you to catch the movie!

The film was initially conceived by Co-Writer/Director Kristopher Belman as a tribute to his hometown of Akron, Ohio. A high school basketball team led by a young phenom named LeBron James had become the talk of the city, and Belman, a film student at Loyola Marymount University, decided to chronicle their season on camera. Not knowing that he is actually chronicling the life of a future superstar. After six years of shooting footage and interviewing players and their families, Belman realized he had the makings of a feature-length documentary.

Red Cliff: Movie Review

“Epic” is probably a word that most Filipinos and Asians are not familiar with when it comes to films. When was the last time an Asian film was labeled as an epic (name one if you can please)? It surprised us then to find out about “Red Cliff” – a film that was originally released late last year and early this year in other parts of the Orient. The total running time was a mind-boggling four hours that they had to separate it into two films. Again, they HAD to separate it into two parts – now that is E-P-I-C. Too bad though that even if we are historically very willing viewers of Chinese films, our country gets the dumbed-down Western version with more than a third of the original being cut. Is “Red Cliff” still worth it even though this is a very different version than originally intended? Read on to find out our opinion about it.

Movie opens with Cao Cao asking permission from the emperor of the Han dynasty to organize a mission in order to stop the warlords creating chaos in the South. He claims that there is a need to unite the whole of China so the invasion is necessary but in reality, his motives are purely personal. After Cao Cao’s attack with the mighty warrior of the south Liu Bei, the latter’s strategist Kongming (Zhuge Ling in other versions of the film) thinks that the only hope to defeat Cao Cao and his army is if they will form an alliance with Sun Quan. Their combined army of 50,000 are to face the North’s 800,000 men. The Southerners, armed with their greatest warriors, must now do all they can to defend their land in the epic battle at Red Cliff.

The verdict? One word sums it up: Impressive. We weren’t shocked when we found out that they spent $80 Million making this film as the whole movie was beautifully shot from start to finish. John Woo definitely didn’t disappoint with this movie which is his first film in China. This movie will be remembered for its showcase of its classic battle of the two kingdoms at sea. What sets it apart from other scenes is that the final battle was done at night. This is probably the first time we have seen a battle like this without the sunlight and yet, the movie was able to show this very effectively. The actors were all good and the fight scenes and stunts will leave you satisfied and yet at the same time, wanting more. This film will definitely cater both Western and Asian audiences. A minor setback is that we wished to have seen the full version as some scenes will leave you wondering how it happened. But then again, we recommend this version as well. This is definitely a must see, and a movie that will make us Asians proud.

Why you should watch it:
- witness martial arts action and stunts at its best
- great cinematography and artistry

Why you shouldn’t watch it:
- you might still find it too long (even though this is the edited version already)
- if you’ve never liked "Once Upon a Time in China" and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"
- heavily cut version is not too invasive but still misses on some scenes

Cinemanila 2009 International Film Festival in Taguig

Cinemanila is back this year and it just keeps getting better and better each year. If you did not know already, Cinemanila is probably the biggest and most respected film festival in the country since its inception in 1999. Some luminaries of the world film industry have already attended Cinemanila like film director Quentin Tarantino. Read on to find out more on 11th edition of the Cinemanila Internation Film Festival.

The Cinemanila International Film Festival was started because it wants to revive our country as the pinnacle of Southeast Asian cinema. It also encourages local films to push the envelope by developing films that are uniquely Pinoy and yet can compete with the international standard.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas: Underground Movie Review

One of our college professors once said that history’s importance is it gives us the ability to see our mistakes and to make sure never to do them again - and this is why we are staunch supporters of films depicting humanity's atrocities in the past. One such film that caught our eyes is “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. A film based on the bestseller novel of the same name by John Boyne. Read on to find out if this film can hold true on its historical accuracy and significance.

The film is centered on a German family and their son named Bruno (Asa Butterfield). Bruno’s father Ralf (David Thewlis) has just been promoted to a new post in the countryside. This countryside location houses a Nazi concentration camp and Ralf is in fact the selected Nazi officer that will run it. When they move, Bruno sees “farmers” from a distance wearing striped pyjamas all day long - unknown to him that these are Jews. Out of curiosity, Bruno wanders around the woods to go near the “farmer’s village” even though he was forbidden by his parents. When he arrives at the village, he meets a boy named Shmuel (Jack Scanlon) and they start becoming the best of friends.

The film is surprisingly a very touching film. The story was really different from what we expected it to be. It kind of breaks the stereotypes we have of how people were during World War II especially the Germans. Most films would portray them as supporters of Hitler’s actions. But in this film, this was taken into a different light - not all are supporters of the atrocities that happened. The acting was gripping as well. Our favorite scene was at the dinner where Ralf was trying his best to hide the growing divide between him and his family. Some might be turned off though by the very slow pace and the ending that was kind of predictable. Quibbles aside, we can say that “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” will leave an indelible mark with you.

Rating: 4 and a half reels

Why you should watch it:
- a touching film with a nice story
- breaks the stereotypes we have of people during World War II and clearly shows that some may have wanted these atrocities to happen but some really did not believe in them

Why you shouldn’t watch it:
- the ending was a bit predictable
- some people will find the pacing a bit too slow and tipping close to boring

Rob Zombie’s remake of "Halloween" was a resounding success upon its release in 2007. Grossing 80 million dollars at the box office, horror fans embraced Zombie’s update. In taking this sequel in a new direction, Zombie departs from the existing mythology of the previous films. He examines the tragedy the characters faced in "Halloween" and builds his story without any guidelines or constraints.

Tyler Mane will also return as the film’s villain. Mane warns, “Michael Myers is back, bigger and badder than ever.”

G-Force: Movie Review

Another film with talking animals? Honestly speaking, we are kind of sick of them. When we first heard of rodents as super spy agents, we definitely had big question marks above our heads. After how "G-Force" performed though in the Hollywood charts a few months back, we are having second thoughts. Maybe "G-Force" shouldn't be judged merely by its main protagonists alone. Well, read on to find out if "G-Force" will shatter our judgement.

The G-Force is a team of specially trained animals (three guinea pigs and a mole) who are hoping to be officialy a part of the FBI. They are experts in espionage operations, complete with special earpieces that allow them to talk to humans. Ben (Zach Galifianakis), the head of the team, reports that the FBI is planning to shut them the team down the next day. Ben decides to send G-Force in an unauthorized mission to retrieve data from a closely monitored industrialist, Leonard Saber. If the mission is a success, the team will be saved. However, Ben finds his team shut down and its members delivered to a pet store when the data they retrieved turned out to be "wrong". It is up to the team to escape and stop Saber before it’s too late for the human race.

As expected, "G-Force" won't wow you at all. It is your typical kiddie-themed spy film. The film did not bring anything new on the table but at least it did not do that bad either. "G-Force" surprisingly was an enjoyable film because of the very simple plot and fast-paced movement of the film. Sometimes action equates to fun. Unfortunately, on the comedic end, "G-Force" was sub-par. Punch line after punch line was a total fail as most of them were really corny. "G-Force" will be loved by the kids definitely but most adults might want to bring down their optimisms by a lot. Ending on a final note, "G-Force" was not a spectacular film but it definitely exceeded our preconceptions of it.

Rating: 3 and a half reels

Why you should watch it:
- kids will really love this for sure but for adults not so much
- fast-paced action won’t bore you much

Why you shouldn’t watch it:
- story is very typical of spy films albeit the protagonists now are rodents
- punch lines did not bring much oomph - a total fail on the comedic end of the film

Pandorum: Movie Review

Without a doubt, a lot of people remember "Aliens" - who could ever forget that feeling of hyper claustrophobia that a dark ship in space brings? The medium has been used several times and certainly, quite a few proved to be successful with this attempt. "Pandorum" excites us as it looks like it has huge potential to actually not be a stinker. It also has been a long time already since we watched a sci-fi flick with monsters on the loose. See if "Pandorum" sucked or not, after the jump.

The movie starts off with Payton (Dennis Quaid) and Bower (Ben Foster), both waking up from their hyper-sleep inside the space ship Elysium. Elysium was launched years ago, carrying thousands and out to reach a planet similar to Earth that can be inhabited by humans. Both guys have amnesia, and they find their ship out of power and without the crew. What happened, what year is it and where are the others? Things start to get more confusing and terrifying as they realize that monsters rule the ship. They now have to work together in order to find out what went wrong, and to get the ship up and running again. Along the way, they find themselves in the company of other humans who’ve been fighting the monsters for a long time.

"Pandorum" couldn’t help but feel that it wasn’t able to reach its full potential. The experience is indeed suspenseful with the very dark and tight ship. Another accolade for the film is probably its unique storyline and surprise twist regarding the ship's fate feels like a mish-mash of storylines and sci-fi flicks. We wanted more from it and by the end of the movie, what leaves a satisfying feeling. But these positive things cannot solely save this film. The experience was really ruined by plot holes and continuity problems between scenes. Most of the time, you will be second-guessing why or what is actually happening on screen. There are less reveals and more questions being thrown at the viewer. Like the actual state of Pandorum wherein one loses his mind, the same thing can be said about the movie. "Pandorum" is indeed lost - completely lost in itself.

Rating: 2 reels

Why you should watch it:
- Darkness and the tight ship will leave you feeling scared most of the time
- The plot is unique in its own right and the ending will surprise you for sure

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- Huge continuity problems seem to plague the movie
- Felt like a mish-mash of storylines and other sci-fi films

Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie: Movie Review

The television show "Bubble Gang" has entertained us weekly for more than a decade already and its influence with Philippine pop culture has never faded. Nothing proves this more accurate with the “Ang Spoiled” phenomenon starring Yaya and Angelina. First, it was just a small segment at "Bubble Gang" then the tandem of Ogie Alcasid and Michael V. starred on their own game show. This does not stop there as now, they have their own movie to boot with “Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie”. What could they offer this time that would be different from their usual segment in "Bubble Gang"? Let’s see if the awesome duo can still give us something fresh to laugh about.

The movie starts off with a couple on a hunt for a nanny that can stand their spoiled kid Angelina (Ogie Alcasid). They hire Rosalinda (Michael V), a patient yaya who thinks Angelina is the sweetest and nicest kid around – until Angelina plays her practical jokes on her. Angelina’s pranks ended up having her yaya fired. A few days after, terrorists who plan on kidnapping the Duchess of Wellington accidentally kidnaps Angelina as well when they steal a school bus. It is now up to yaya to save Angelina from the kidnappers.

“Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie” will leave you scratching your head as to why this was even released. To sum it all up, there are a lot more times that you will yawn in boredom than you will laugh – and to think this is a comedy right?. The basic plot is screaming out Nineties – one of the main characters gets kidnapped while the other saves the day. We can say that the film had its moments but it is not worth the ticket price for the lackluster experience overall. Joke upon joke do not save a film alone. This is a venture for the “Ang Spoiled” franchise that is a total fail. Our advice - just watch it on television weekly for free than to pay up for this film.

Rating: 1 and a half reels

Why you should watch it:
- strictly for hardcore "Ang Spoiled" fans only

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- will leave you snoring than laughing in most parts
- dumb down plot is the typical thing we have seen again and again
- better off to watch "Ang Spoiled" for free than to watch this and pay up.
