The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026) Movie Review: Bigger, Bolder, Better

It was always going to be difficult to follow an iconic film but two decades after the original’s release, The Devil Wears Prada 2 rises to the challenge - and succeeds in style. If the first film centered on a young and reluctant intern entering an industry she neither understood nor cared for, the sequel mirrors its lead character Andy Sachs return: bolder, more confident, and ultimately better. What makes this sequel work is the clear sense of love, care, and creativity poured into it fitting into the sequel's story that directly confronts a modern world where print has turned digital and genuine creativity is increasingly replaced by fast artificial commodities.

After Runway publishes a controversial article about an emerging fashion brand, the backlash falls squarely on Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). In response, Runway owner Irv hires Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), now an award-winning journalist, as the magazine’s new Features Editor to restore its credibility. Naturally, Andy’s return sparks tension and chaos but both women soon realize they must work together to save Runway from total collapse.

For us, one of the sequel’s biggest achievements is how effortlessly the cast slips back into these beloved roles. While the characters have aged, the performances remain remarkably consistent with the original film. This time around, however, the story allows for more emotional depth and stronger character development. The original The Devil Wears Prada was undeniably iconic but its narrative was relatively straightforward and simple. The sequel takes more time building Andy’s return to Runway, her rise within the company, and her evolving relationship with Miranda.

Speaking of Miranda, the film makes the bold decision to present her in a more human and grounded light. Rather than softening her completely, the sequel gives her greater depth and nuance, making her role within the fashion industry feel more meaningful than ever. In fact, nearly every returning character benefits from expanded screen time and stronger material making it easier to invest in their personal journeys. That said, the film occasionally struggles under the weight of its own ambition. From AI-driven creativity concerns and media consolidation to workplace politics and political correctness, the sequel tackles a wide range of timely topics but at times, it feels like the narrative is rushing to cover too much at once. The new characters also take a heavy backseat with some feeling unnecessary or badly written such as Justin Theroux's tech billionaire Benji Barnes.

Still, The Devil Wears Prada 2 delivers exactly what a long-awaited sequel should: it honors the original while confidently evolving it for a new generation. Bigger, bolder, and sharper, this sequel absolutely slays.

True to its poster headlines, Mother Mary isn’t a love story and it certainly isn’t a ghost story. It’s something far harder to define as it is an introspective and abstract journey that will challenge as many viewers as it captivates. The film shines through its striking visuals and powerful performances from its leads, but its dense, metaphor-heavy narrative makes it a divisive watch. Some will be mesmerized while others frustrated. For us, we land somewhere in between.

The story follows Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway), a pop icon preparing for a comeback after a personal crisis on stage on her last big concert. When her chosen outfit fails to reflect her true identity, she reconnects with Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), a renowned costume designer and estranged close friend from earlier her career. Their reunion unearths unresolved trauma and the deeper truths behind Mother Mary’s struggle.

Mother Mary is undeniably intense though not in a conventional, explosive way. Instead, it thrives in slow, quiet, dialogue-driven moments where emotion simmers beneath the surface. Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel deliver performances that feel raw and unhinged, grounding the film even at its most abstract moments. A standout sequence for us is Anne Hathaway’s silent dance which captures the film’s emotional raw core that left us speechless and breathless to what we witnessed.

However, these moments are few and far between. Much of Mother Mary leans heavily into ambiguity often at the expense of clarity. Its reliance on metaphors and open interpretation can feel tiring and alienating more than being an immersive experience. At least in our case, it was difficult to fully connect with its themes. In the end, Mother Mary is visually and emotionally compelling but narratively elusive. It is a film you may admire more than you truly enjoy.

The Pitt (2026) Season 2 Series Review: Intense as Expected

The Pitt was one of last year’s biggest surprises, delivering a medical drama that struck a near-perfect balance between the personal struggles of its characters and the relentless pace of a chaotic emergency room. Whether you were drawn to its emotional depth or its high-stakes medical cases, it was a series that knew how to hook its audience. Season 2 follows a similar formula but struggles to maintain the same cohesion from start to finish. While still compelling, this second outing falls short in some key areas.

Set nearly a year after the first season, we return to the Pitt as the team braces for the chaos of Fourth of July celebrations. Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) is preparing for his final shift before embarking on a three-month cross-country motorbike trip. Familiar faces return alongside new ones but tensions rise as Dr. Al Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) steps in as Robby's interim replacement.

To its credit, The Pitt Season 2 retains the high-stakes intensity that made the first season so gripping. Episodes often end on cliffhangers, making the season dangerously easy to binge. The cast remains the show’s strongest asset in our opinion with each mainline actor delivering nuanced performances that ground their characters even further. However, this season feels noticeably more scattered. Dr. Robby, never portrayed as the perfect boss, comes across far more abrasive this season which makes him harder to connect with. The supporting cast also takes a step back, and while a few characters receive deeper development, the season lacks the balanced storytelling that once gave everyone a meaningful arc.

The show also leans heavily into timely themes, introducing elements like ICE involvement and a cyberattack that forces the hospital to revert to manual systems. While these additions add relevance, they can feel overwhelming occasionally sacrificing narrative focus for sheer volume of conflict. In the end, The Pitt Season 2 remains an engaging watch but it lacks the tight balance that made its first season so impactful in more ways than one.

Lee Cronin's The Mummy (2026) Movie Review: The Mummy Rises

The Mummy franchise, at least as we remember it from our childhood, leaned more into fun adventures closer to Indiana Jones than outright horror. The last attempt to reimagine it failed, taking down an entire planned universe along with it. This time, Lee Cronin goes all-in on the supernatural aspects of the material delivering something far more shocking and disturbing in Lee Cronin's The Mummy. While it may not be the scariest film out there, it’s easily one of the most intense, aiming to provoke pure discomfort from its viewers and we loved it.

Katie (Natalie Grace) was kidnapped and taken into the Egyptian desert without a trace eight years ago. Her family (Jack Reynor, Laia Costa) eventually relocates to New Mexico hoping to move on while still searching for answers. Their lives are turned upside down when Katie suddenly returns not as a corpse, but alive. What begins as a miraculous reunion soon spirals into a living nightmare as her true nature slowly reveals itself.

Coming off the success of Evil Dead Rise, it’s no surprise that Cronin pushes the limits of gore once again. While The Mummy tones it down slightly compared to his previous film, it still delivers a relentless stream of shocking moments. At times, however, this comes at the expense of plausibility as characters repeatedly make baffling decisions that could have easily been avoided. At over two hours long, the film also feels stretched. While it rarely drags just because of the over-the-top nature of its supernatural horror, the overall narrative isn’t as satisfying as it could have been. While it brings in a new concept of what the Mummy curse is, it could have been a better film if it was a tighter 90 minutes long.

The relatively unknown cast delivers solid performances helping ground the film despite its more outrageous elements. Part horror, part chaos, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is a reimagining that ultimately works. It may not be perfect but it stands well on its own and shows enough promise to build toward something bigger.

Trust Me: The False Prophet (2026) Review: A First-Hand Look Into Manipulation

It’s rare for a true crime documentary to feature this much first-hand footage of the very person it seeks to expose. That’s what sets Trust Me: The False Prophet apart. At its core, these are the same footage that ultimately led to the capture of Samuel Bateman who is a deeply disturbing figure who manipulated young women and their families into becoming part of his so-called spiritual circle. This is what makes the series so harrowing: you’re witnessing, almost in real time, the same reality experienced by those gathering evidence against him.

Following the arrest of Warren Jeffs, a void emerged within the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS). Bateman seized that opportunity, breaking away to form his own sect while claiming to be Jeffs’ rightful successor. Christina Marie and Tolga Katas soon cross paths with Bateman and his followers. What begins as curiosity turns into something far more dangerous, as they go undercover, secretly documenting his actions in an effort to expose the abuse happening within the group.

Across its four episodes, the documentary follows a clear and effective structure. The first episode lays the groundwork, detailing how Christina and Tolga became involved and gained Bateman’s trust. The second dives into the deeply unsettling day-to-day reality within the group. The final two episodes shift focus to the escalating investigation which eventually ending with Bateman's arrest.

What truly stands out is how raw and unfiltered the footage feels because it simply is. This is not a dramatized retelling but a direct window into Bateman’s manipulation and control. Watching it unfold is deeply uncomfortable, as you see firsthand how he exploits and influences those around him. It’s this authenticity that makes the series so difficult to watch yet impossible to look away from. The documentary also delivers unexpected twists and turns not just in terms of Samuel Bateman but in the evolving roles of those working to expose him. However, be warned that this is not an easy watch. The subject matter is deeply disturbing, and the emotional weight lingers long after the final episode.

In the end, Trust Me: The False Prophet is a gripping experience and one that stands out in the true crime genre for its raw access and unsettling realism.

18th Rose (2026) Movie Review: Manufactured Drama

We didn’t expect to be moved by 18th Rose, but despite its somewhat manufactured drama, it manages to hit emotional beats when you least expect it. Beneath its kilig-filled moments lies a deeper story one that goes beyond young love and explores themes of family, identity, and the longing for acceptance from the people who matter most. Unfortunately, while the film reaches several dramatic highs, it struggles to bring all its ideas together resulting in an uneven experience.

Rose (Xyriel Manabat) is a 17-year-old girl from a small-town province with simple dreams and chief among them is having the grandest debut celebration on the island. Meanwhile, Jordan (Kyle Echarri) dreams of leaving the Philippines to reconnect with his estranged American father who has ignored his emails for years. The two form a mutually beneficial arrangement: Rose helps Jordan get his father’s attention while Jordan provides the financial means to make her debut a reality. What begins as a transactional partnership gradually evolves into something more meaningful.

At the heart of 18th Rose is Xyriel Manabat who delivers a natural and emotionally grounded performance. She carries the film with ease bringing authenticity and warmth to Rose’s journey. In contrast, Kyle Echarri struggles at times, particularly in his line delivery which can feel unnatural as he struggles to complete his words and accent. Despite this imbalance between the two, the chemistry between them remains effective allowing the film’s romantic and emotional moments to land with sincerity. The film shines as it is not just a story about young love. It’s also about yearning, belonging, and the complexities of family relationships. These themes add a layer of depth that elevates the material beyond a typical coming-of-age romance. However, 18th Rose has difficulty maintaining its focus. While the first half is engaging, the second half leans heavily into fake drama introducing a predictable twist that feels more manufactured than earned.

There’s also an attempt to build a nostalgic atmosphere but it doesn’t feel fully integrated into the story. The time setting doesn’t significantly impact the narrative and could have easily been adapted to a more modern context without much change. In the end, 18th Rose is a heartfelt experience that succeeds in delivering emotional moments even if it stumbles in execution.

Him (2025) Movie Review: Not the GOAT

We’ve always loved sports dramas and horror films, so the idea of blending the two made Him an easy film to root for. Directed by Justin Tipping, the film is a disturbing and visually striking experience. Unfortunately, while it excels in atmosphere and intensity, it ultimately lacks the depth and cohesion needed to tie its ideas together. Beyond its harrowing sports sequences, the film struggles to maintain a clear narrative vision, resulting in a disjointed and messy experience.

Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans) has been the face of the Saviors franchise for nearly two decades, winning eight championships and cementing himself as the undisputed greatest of all time. Meanwhile, rising star Cam Cade (Tyriq Withers) is poised to become the next great quarterback until a violent attack leaves him with a potentially career-ending injury. With retirement looming, White invites Cam to his isolated bootcamp testing whether he has what it takes to become his successor.

If Him were judged solely on performances and visuals, it would be a powerhouse. The training sequences feel raw and authentic, capturing the physical and psychological toll of striving for greatness. Both Tyriq Withers and Marlon Wayans deliver strong performances, and the dynamic between the established GOAT and his potential successor is filled with tension and intrigue.

However, the film falters when it comes to its narrative. While it attempts to explore the cost of greatness, it does so in a messy and unfocused way. Scenes are often mesmerizing to look at on their own but feel disconnected when placed together making the story, even with its simplicity, difficult to follow at times. The supernatural elements, while intriguing, lack proper development, leaving the film’s lore feeling incomplete. Even the climactic final sequence though gory and thrilling feels rushed as if the film is scrambling to bring its ideas to a close. In the end, Him feels like a film with immense potential that never fully comes together. It has all the right ingredients but without the narrative polish to unify them or real thrills to excite, it falls short of achieving true greatness.

The Visit (2015) Movie Review: It's Worth a Visit Still

There was a time when found footage films were all the rage and we were definitely among those who enjoyed the format. So finally watching The Visit more than a decade after its theatrical release was an exciting experience. It’s honestly surprising that we never gave it a chance but we’re glad we eventually did. While it isn’t a perfect film or an all-time great, it delivers several genuinely harrowing and memorable moments, capped off by a Shyamalan twist that’s deeply unsettling.

The film follows a sister (Olivia DeJonge) and her younger brother (Ed Oxenbould) who are sent to stay with their grandparents at a remote farm in Pennsylvania while their mother goes on a cruise. What begins as a simple family visit quickly turns disturbing as the siblings notice increasingly strange and frightening behavior from their grandparents especially at night.

There are moments in The Visit where the situation feels a bit contrived. Instances like the grandparents conveniently disappearing whenever visitors arrive or the lack of timely help when it’s most needed, may frustrate viewers looking for realism. But despite these flaws, the film remains incredibly engaging. We found ourselves fully invested and rooting for the siblings as they try to make sense of the increasingly terrifying situation around them.

What stands out is the film’s subtle characterization, which adds surprising depth to both the children and their grandparents. These layers make the unfolding horror feel more personal and impactful. The film is also packed with standout moments such as the oven cleaning scene eventually leading up to a twist reveal that elevates the entire experience. While we often find that M. Night Shyamalan can be heavy-handed with his twists, The Visit delivers one that feels natural, well-earned, and genuinely shocking. In the end, The Visit proves that even with a few narrative shortcuts, strong execution and clever storytelling can still make for a memorable horror experience.

Anaconda (2025) Movie Review: A Snake Without a Bite

Coming in blind to Anaconda, we weren’t quite sure what to expect from the seventh installment in the franchise. But with Paul Rudd and Jack Black leading the cast, it was clear this entry would take a very different tonal direction. And unsurprisingly, it does leaning heavily into comedy while attempting to deliver a meta-commentary on filmmaking. It’s a concept that sounds great on paper but unfortunately the execution doesn’t quite land. While the film has genuinely hilarious moments, it’s weighed down by stretches that feel generic and uninspired.

Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd) have been best friends since childhood, both sharing the same dream of making it big in Hollywood. Years later, that dream remains unrealized. Facing a midlife crisis, the two decide to take matters into their own hands by heading deep into the Amazon to create their own remake of the ‘90s hit Anaconda. But what starts as a chaotic passion project quickly turns into a fight for survival when a real giant anaconda enters the picture.

There are moments in Anaconda that feel reminiscent of Tropic Thunder which is another film that blends satire with outrageous comedy. Unfortunately, while this film borrows some of that spirit, it falls far short of achieving the same level of greatness. That’s not to say it isn’t funny. In fact, the chemistry between Paul Rudd and Jack Black is easily the film’s biggest strength,carrying many of its comedic beats with unhinged energy.

However, the film struggles where it matters most. The writing often feels generic as the story lacks both heart and originality. Even for a deliberately silly film, some of its more outrageous moments feel excessive rather than entertaining. Character development is practically nonexistent and scenes often feeling like they exist solely to push the plot forward. The visual effects, particularly the anaconda itself, also leave much to be desired. Whether intentional or not, the snake’s cheap looks becomes a distraction. In the end, Anaconda works best as a mindless kind of watch. If you’re just looking for something light and silly, it gets the job done.

In the film, a happily engaged couple is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails. “The Drama” follows British expat and museum curator Charlie Thompson (Robert Pattinson) and literary editor Emma Harwood (Zendaya), who meet in a Cambridge café and quickly fall into a whirlwind romance. “You think you know someone, and they can say literally one sentence that maybe they don’t even realize they are saying,” says Pattinson. “Suddenly everything has changed, and you can’t put the genie back in the bottle.” In “The Drama," that single moment becomes the catalyst for a deeper exploration of trust, morality, and the fragile foundation of relationships.

For Zendaya, the film goes beyond the revelation itself. “This is Kristoffer Borgli’s version of the romantic comedy, asking us how much we’re willing to accept from another person in the name of love,” she shares. “When everything is out on the table between two people, what’s left over in a relationship on the eve of saying ‘I do’?” It's a question that lingers—how much truth can love really hold?

They Will Kill You (2026) Movie Review: What a Wild Ride

They Will Kill You feels like a mash-up of Kill Bill, Evil Dead, and Ready or Not resulting in one wild and chaotic ride. If you were worried that the trailer revealed too much, there’s good news as the film still has plenty of surprises up its sleeve. While it’s undeniably fun, there’s no escaping the fact that it lacks depth. With a premise that feels ripe for richer lore and world-building, the film ultimately prioritizes action over substance, leaving us wanting more from its characters.

When they were young, sisters Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz) and Maria (Myha'la) attempt to escape their abusive father. But things don’t go as planned, and Asia is separated from her sister and ultimately ending up in prison. More than a decade later, Asia manages to track Maria down who is now working at The Virgil - a mysterious building that caters to the ultra-wealthy. Determined to reconnect, Asia takes a job there as a helper unaware of the danger she’s stepping into.

After its first fifteen minutes, They Will Kill You quickly descends into nonstop chaos as Asia’s true intentions begin to unfold. The film leans heavily into its fast-paced action and over-the-top violence which was extremely fun in a lot of ways. These delivered in spades in terms of gore and thrills but unexpectedly, laughs. Zazie Beetz rises to the challenge fully embracing the physicality and intensity required of her character. The film’s narrative is also packed with unexpected twists that we genuinely lost count of how many times it caught us off guard.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for its character development. Most of the supporting cast are reduced to little more than cannon fodder with minimal backstory or emotional weight. This is especially disappointing given how much potential the world of The Virgil has for deeper lore and storytelling. At just 90 minutes, the film never overstays its welcome but it also feels like a missed opportunity as we could have easily spent more time exploring its strange and dangerous world. In the end, They Will Kill You may miss out on delivering a fully fleshed-out experience but its straightforward, no-holds-barred approach makes for a memorable and entertaining ride. It’s messy, chaotic, and lacking in depth but it sure knows how to have fun.

Netflix has officially unveiled the trailer for 18th Rose, the streaming platform’s first original Filipino film for 2026 offering audiences a glimpse into the heartfelt coming-of-age world of Rose (Xyriel Manabat) and Jordan (Kyle Echarri) set against the backdrop of early 2000s Romblon.

Speaking at the New on Netflix event held in February, Xyriel shared how deeply she connected with her character: “Everything came along naturally, because I believed Rose, I trusted Rose, and I fell in love with Rose.”

The film marks not only Manabat’s debut leading lady role, but also her first on-screen pairing with Echarri, whose real-life friendship with the actress helped shape their dynamic and chemistry throughout the production period: “It was smooth and effortless (because) me and Kyle have known each other for a very long time. So for the first few days (of shooting), we were just joking around. Each sequence we closed, we built a deeper connection with each other.”

For director and writer Dolly Dulu, the early 2000s setting is a deliberate creative choice meant to transport viewers back to a simpler time, making the film an opportunity to relive life before instant messaging and social media took over, and then creating the perfect backdrop to a tender, transformative love story. “18th Rose is a small-town film; I wanted to capture the feeling of small-town movies in the Philippines.”

Scream 7 (2026) Movie Review: Burned It All Down

Coming off the success of Scream VI, Scream 7 ends up being a major disappointment. With franchise creator Kevin Williamson back in the director’s chair and Neve Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott, we had high hopes despite all the controversy surrounding the film. Unfortunately, those hopes quickly faded. What we get instead is a generic slasher riddled with logical loopholes, weak writing and the most underwhelming killer reveal the franchise has ever delivered. While the kills are admittedly fun, almost everything else falls flat.

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has finally built a quiet life away from the horrors that have followed her for decades. But that peace is shattered when a new Ghostface killer emerges and this time, the attacks seem to be connected to an old Ghostface killer. Even worse, Ghostface has set sight on her daughter, Tatum (Isabel May). Forced to confront the nightmare she thought she had long escaped, Sidney once again finds herself dragged back into the violence that has defined so much of her life.

From its opening scene, Scream 7 already feels like a warning sign. The original killer house from the first Scream is burned down, and in a strange way, that image feels symbolic of what the film eventually becomes. It tears down many of the key elements that made the franchise stand out in the first place. Most noticeably, the self-awareness and sharp commentary on horror tropes are largely absent here. Instead, the film plays things closer to a generic slasher with characters making illogical decisions that feel more convenient for the plot than believable within the story. One of the worst examples is Sidney running off on her own to save her daughter instead of simply waiting for Gale Weathers’ car.

Beyond missing its meta-commentary edge, the narrative itself is painfully basic. There’s little suspense in how the mystery unfolds, and the eventual Ghostface reveal is laughably weak. The motive behind the killings feels forced, unconvincing and nowhere near compelling enough to justify the carnage. For a franchise known for memorable reveals and layered killers, this one lands with a thud. The only real saving grace in Scream 7 is its kills. They’re over-the-top, gruesome and at times genuinely creative. If all you’re looking for is a handful of bloody set pieces, there is at least some fun to be had. But as a Scream film, this misses the mark badly.

Project Hail Mary (2026) Movie Review: Stellar Crowd Pleaser

Project Hail Mary is one of our most anticipated films of 2026. As big fans of The Martian and the work of author Andy Weir, we were already excited to see another one of his stories adapted for the big screen. Add in the presence of Ryan Gosling in the lead role and the directing duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and we were completely sold from the moment the first teaser trailer dropped last year. Thankfully, even with all the hype we built up, the film absolutely delivers. Packed with drama, humor, twists, genuine surprises, and stunning visuals, Project Hail Mary easily earns its place as an instant sci-fi classic in our books.

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years away from Earth with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As fragments of his memory slowly return, Grace begins to uncover the reason behind his mission: to solve the mystery of a strange substance that is causing the sun, and other stars across the Milky Way, to rapidly die out. With the fate of Earth hanging in the balance, Grace must rely on his scientific expertise and unconventional thinking to find a solution before humanity faces extinction.

At two and a half hours long, Project Hail Mary is a lengthy film. Admittedly, this is our only real gripe with it. The pacing during the final half hour feels noticeably faster compared to the rest of the movie. With several major twists and revelations packed into this stretch, it felt as if the story kept introducing new elements to extend the experience further. Fortunately, this minor issue doesn’t take away much from what is otherwise a stellar ride from start to finish.

Ryan Gosling is outstanding as the amnesia-stricken Ryland Grace. Gosling has always shown impressive versatility as an actor and here he once again proves his ability to make any character come of as interesting and real. A major surprise, however, comes from Grace’s unexpected co-star, Rocky. The relationship between Grace and Rocky becomes the emotional heart of the film, providing moments of humor, warmth, and genuine connection that elevate the story beyond its scientific premise. Visually and aurally, Project Hail Mary is stunning and this is a movie that absolutely deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. In many ways, it carries echoes of Interstellar, but where that film leans heavily into dense scientific complexity, Project Hail Mary feels like the more accessible sibling which is still ambitious, but more approachable and often a lot more fun. In the end, Project Hail Mary balances science, spectacle, humor, and heart with remarkable execution.

Seklusyon (2016) Movie Review: Great Even After a Decade

Even after nearly a decade, Seklusyon still holds up remarkably well. The film presents thought-provoking ideas that invite viewers to reflect on deeper themes beyond its surface as a horror movie. For those expecting a traditional scare fest, the film may feel slow or even a little tedious at times. But the true horror here is more subtle. In fact, the real-life implications of the story are far more unsettling than the supernatural elements that appear on screen.

Set in 1947, the story follows a group of aspiring priests who are sent to a remote convent to live in seclusion for a week as their final test before ordination. The ritual is meant to prove their readiness to serve the Church. However, their isolation is disrupted when a mysterious young girl with purported miraculous powers, Anghela (Rhed Bustamante), arrives at the convent seeking shelter. Soon, each candidate begins experiencing vivid encounters from their pasts, forcing them to confront the real reasons why they chose the priesthood in the first place.

The narrative of Seklusyon is intriguing from the start, weaving together two separate storylines that eventually converge. Ironically, despite the film’s title suggesting that the seclusion ritual would take center stage, the subplot involving Anghela and her supposed miracles ends up being the stronger hook. The same contrast appears in the performances. Ronnie Alonte leads the group of aspiring priests but his performance feels noticeably weaker compared to the rest of the cast. In contrast, Rhed Bustamante delivers an impressive and unsettling performance as Anghela, though the film could have benefited from giving her character more backstory.

At around 90 minutes, the film also feels like it needed a bit more time to fully develop its characters and themes. The final 15 minutes, which attempt to tie together the film’s mysteries and revelations feel rushed given the amount of ground the story tries to complete. Despite this, the ending remains impactful and makes the journey worthwhile even with the film’s narrative shortcomings. Overall, Seklusyon is a rewarding watch if you approach it with the right expectations. It isn’t designed to be an all-out horror thriller but rather a slow-burning exploration of false idols.

Anne Hathaway stuns as the titular global pop icon in this new ambitious film produced by A24. The film centers on the iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) when she reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance. Long-buried wounds eventually rise to the surface. Mother Mary also headlines the following actors to round out its main cast with Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber, and FKA Twigs.

Mother Mary is written and directed by David Lowery. The filmmaker takes viewers to a musical journey in the backdrop of an unlikely reunion between former friends, while exploring the haunting effect of long-lost formidable connections. The movie features original music by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs.

The singles “Burial”, performed by Hathaway; and “My Mouth is Lonely For You” by Twigs, will be released in March. Meanwhile, the film’s digital soundtrack, featuring seven songs, will drop on Hathaway’s music streaming accounts in April.
