This week was Beatles week on American Idol. I have to admit, as unpopular as my opinion may be, I'm not a big fan of the Beatles. Nevertheless, this week proved to be an interesting one with some memorable performances and with Michael Lynch being voted off and then saved by the judges. Here's my breakdown again, in order of the week's most enjoyed, down to the my least favorite.

This week was Beatles week on American Idol. I have to admit, as unpopular as my opinion may be, I’m not a big fan of the Beatles. Nevertheless, this week proved to be an interesting one with Michael Lynch being voted off and then saved by the judges. Here’s my breakdown, again, in order of this week’s most enjoyed down to the my least favorite.

Crystal Bowersox – “Come Together”

Crystal is just plain awesome. Enough said. As I was watching her performance of “Come Together” again, I was so amazed at her vocal precision and awesome interpretation of the song. She definitely made it her own. And her addition of the didgeridoo was really cool. Honestly, that was the first time I’d ever seen it played. At any rate, I’ll still be shocked if she doesn’t win American Idol this year, but if she doesn’t, she’s sure to have a long and successful career as a singer and recording artist. She’s just too good, talented and original not to.

Casey James – “Jealous Guy”

Like I said last week, Casey is a great performer. This week, I really think he was my favorite, with his rendition of “Jealous Guy.” His performance of the song was raw, emotional and exceptional, so much so, that I’m including the link to watch it again HERE. After watching all the performances again, Casey James’ was the most original to me. At this point in the competition, he’s positioned himself as a frontrunner. It’s always exciting to see someone step it up a notch. And this week, Casey’s done just that.

Lee DeWyze – “Hey Jude”

Lee’s performance this week was pretty much his typical standard, except for the bagpipes. While I enjoyed his rendition of “Hey Jude,” I didn’t feel that it changed his position any in the competition. As far as I’m concerned, he’s still in the top three for the win. He seems a bit like Danny Gokey to me, positionally at this point, although more talented with his guitar playing. I think he’s going to need to do something completely different and unexpected to take it to the win. I’m not totally sure what that is, but I think he needs to show that he can move out of his wailing rasp to something softer and more introspective.

Katie Stevens – “Let It Be”

To me, Katie Stevens is a star about to come into her own. The more I hear her sing, the more I like her, especially after hearing her sing “Let It Be” this week. Honestly, there’s a good bit of talent on American Idol this season, but if I had to choose a voice that I’d want to hear for it’s pristine quality, it would probably be Katie. She’s got the type of voice that I enjoy hearing. Not to diminish Crystal Bowersox or Lee DeWyze or the others, but Katie’s voice just soothes me. I still don’t think she’ll win, but I do think she’ll be around for a while longer. And I still think she’s best suited in the pop country genre.

Tim Urban – “All My Loving”

Tim gets the most improved award this week. I really enjoyed his performance. As painful as last week’s performance was, this week’s “All My Loving” proved to be quite enjoyable. The song definitely fit his voice well, and he looked at ease while performing. If he keeps this up, he may just surprise us all. Word has it that his swimsuit competition photos on the internet are boosting his votes with the younger girl population. Hey, it’s all about marketing and popularity, oh, and talent, of course!

Siobhan Magnus – “Across the Universe”

Honestly, I didn’t care so much for the song. I guess I’ve grown accustomed to hearing Siobhan do something a bit more impressive. But, after watching the performance again, I’d have to say that her control and interpretation were impressive. I think she would’ve been in the bottom three though, if she hadn’t shared her personal story at the end about her siblings. Siobhan still proves to be quite the enigma. I’ll give her kudos for showing variety in what she does.

Aaron Kelley – “The Long and Winding Road”

I’ll say it again, he’s pretty awesome for 16, but this song was pretty boring to me. And, after hearing David Archuleta sing “Imagine,” it left me thinking that Aaron’s got a ways to go. Nevertheless, he did a decent job with this song, but right now I think he’s still in the competition due to his likeability more than his talent.

Michael Lynch – “Eleanor Rigby”

Michael’s a great singer, but I think people don’t want another Ruben Studdard. Again, every time I hear Michael sing, I see Ruben. He’s good and pretty precise vocally, but I really don’t care about him. Quite frankly, people need to care to keep voting. And, since Michael was technically voted off this week, I think it’s only a matter of time before he’s gone. I’ll be surprised if he surpasses next week, but who knows, I could be wrong. At any rate, Michael did a good job with his performance of “Eleanor Rigby.”

Andrew Garcia – “Can’t Buy Me Love”

Ah, well, I wasn’t surprised to see Andrew Garcia in the bottom two this week. His rendition of “Can’t Buy Me Love” was solid, but it certainly didn’t do anything to move him forward in the competition. Of course, at this point, I’m not sure anything will move him forward. I think the public is kind of spent on Andrew. I know I am.

I struggled this year over whether or not I would blog and podcast again about American Idol. I tried to stay out of it, but decided just this week to go ahead and give my two cents about this year’s contestants. I’ll try to give my rundown each week until the show is over. Following, you’ll read or hear what my opinion is about the final 10 on Idol for this season. You may or may not agree with me, but I welcome your comments. Each week, the order that I list the remaining contestants will start with the one voted off (Didi for this week) and will end with the one that I believe, at this point, has the best chance of winning the competition. I hope you enjoy.

Didi Benami – “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted”

The first several times I heard Didi sing, I loved what I heard. Much of what I heard reminded me of Megan Joy Corkrey from last season. I really liked Megan Joy’s voice and her originality. Didi made me feel like she was back in a way. But, over the course of the last three weeks or so, it became evident that Didi just didn’t seem to be able to find her own vocal niche. And not to sound like the judges, but she really didn’t seem to know what to sing when it came to giving a solid performance. Instead of improving over the last few weeks, she seemed to become less sure of herself. As a singer myself, I can understand how intimidating it must be to have to perform live and be compared with other great talent, especially those like Crystal Bowersox, who already appears to have come into her own, even at the start of the season of Idol.

Now to Didi’s performance of “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” – Well, I’m not typically one to vote for Idol contestants, unless I feel particularly inspired in some way. Last week, I actually voted for Didi, not because I thought she would win, but because I wanted her to have another chance. Unfortunately, when I heard her sing this week, the only thing that I could say to myself was “it’s time for her to go.” This has nothing to do with her likeability either. This song was worse than her previous songs. And, in comparison to the other performances this week, Didi’s stood out as being at the bottom. I don’t know if her nerves just got the best of her or what, but the song dragged and she was really off pitch. To be quite honest, it was painful to listen to, and I just wanted to turn the channel at the end so as to not hear what the judges were about to say to her.

I’m sad to see Didi go, but she really didn’t seem to have what was required to compete with the others any more. I hate to say that. Like I said, I really love hearing her sing, when she’s in her element. Hopefully, she’ll soon find herself and reemerge as a successful recording artist. Best of luck to her.

Tim Urban – “Sweet Love”

“Sweet Love” seemed to be an unusual song choice for Tim. I don’t think it was necessarily bad, but it wasn’t anything that stood out as wonderful either. Much to the chagrin of the judges, Tim’s smiley, sweet nature seems to be winning him votes with the voting public. Vocally, he’s probably out of his league when you compare him to the others in this competition. Nevertheless, he’s appealing to a young crowd looking for a heartthrob, in my estimation. Maybe that’s why he chose “Sweet Love” as his song choice. If he wises up a bit on his song choices and gets his act together better, he might just stay around for a few more weeks. No matter what you think about his ability, you can’t help but like him. And, likeability can take you a long way.

Siobhan Magnus – “Through the Fire”

Well, Siobhan has proven to be very unique and interesting over the past few weeks. With her wailing voice and quirky nature, she’s definitely added some much needed interest to American Idol this year. Still, there’s the issue of this week’s performance of “Through the Fire” by Taylor Dane. To me, it was screeching and awful. Quite frankly I was cringing as I heard her sing it. Just as the judges stated, her low notes were unimpressive and her wailing was over-reaching. It was just not a good performance at all. And I have to agree that her garb was kind of ridiculous too. I’m not one to comment on one’s appearance, but Siobhan’s outfit seemed to embody her performance – out of control and a bit whacky. I think she’s got an amazing voice, but if she doesn’t get her act together, she’ll be gone in a couple of weeks (in my humble opinion). Her niche may be to be kind of weird, which may work for her, but the fact remains that if that’s her true niche, then she needs to do it well. This week she simply didn’t.

Aaron Kelley – “Ain’t No Sunshine”

Aaron Kelley, no doubt, has an amazing voice, especially considering the fact that he’s only sixteen years old. His rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine” was good. I enjoyed his performance, but it wasn’t my favorite. That being said, he still gave a solid performance. While I watched the clip of his practice session with Usher, I felt like he had more control over his voice and showed more passion in the small bit that they showed him singing. His live performance felt a bit less solid, but after all, who wouldn’t be a bit nervous singing in front of millions on television. Aaron is an extremely talented kid and should go far with the instrument that he’s got. Unfortunately, he won’t be winning on American Idol this season, in my humble opinion. There are a couple of others who are primed and ready for the win. Give Aaron a few years, with a bit more experience and maturity, and it’ll be interesting to see just what he’ll do with that voice.

Katie Stevens – “Chain of Fools”

Katie, in my opinion, has no chance of winning American Idol this year. She just seems too young and inexperienced. But, that’s not at all meant to diminish her talent. In fact, Katie can sing – really well. You hear it when she’s in her groove vocally. And if she’s managed right, in a little time, she’ll soon find herself in the midst of a thriving music career. I hear traces of great singers such as LeAnn Rimes in her when she’s performing, especially this week when I heard her do “Chain of Fools.” In my opinion, she did an awesome job. She was a little pitchy at times, but her voice richly resonated as she performed. She also looked very comfortable, fearless and in control on the stage. When you consider her vocal talent and performing ability – in light of her very young age, she’s quite remarkable. As for her genre of music, I’d have to agree with Simon. It’s not that she can’t sing R & B and Pop, but I think she’d have a much more successful career in the country realm, just as Carrie Underwood has. In my opinion, if Katie took on pop country as her genre and stuck to it for the remainder of the show, she might actually have a chance of winning this year. Right now, she just seems kind of clueless about what her niche is. For this reason, I don’t think she has a chance of winning.

Andrew Garcia – “Forever”

The judges raved about his performance of “Forever”. As Randy Jackson says about everyone, “It was a bit pitchy.” I enjoyed Andrew’s performance, especially when he jumped to the higher portions of his range. In the higher parts, he was more energized and precise with both pitch and emotion. It was in those moments that I felt like the song came alive. The beginning and the lower parts were a bit boring to me. Overall, the guy gave a solid, professional performance of which he should be proud. While Andrew is extremely talented with voice and guitar, I doubt he’ll be the victor this season on American Idol. That’s not to say, though, that he doesn’t now have the potential for a successful singing career as a recording artist.

Michael Lynch – “Ready for Love”

While Michael Lynch’s performance of “Ready for Love” was quite good, moving and heartfelt, I have to say that I can’t get Ruben Studdard out of my head when I hear and watch him sing. For that reason, I just don’t see him winning this year. While he’s been consistently good, he still seems to be a cut below Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze. For me, they seem more original than Michael, which will probably better ensure their success in this year’s competition. That being said, it still wouldn’t surprise me to see Michael in the top three, as long as he continues to be consistent in his craft.

Casey James – “Hold On I’m Coming”

Casey James is a great performer. As Kara DioGuardi stated, “he always brings it,” or something like that, I have to agree. Casey is just a talented professional singer. It’s obvious. He appears fearless, dead on with his vocals and totally in his element when on stage. He exudes confidence and talent when he performs. Unlike many of the other contestants this year on Idol, Casey looks like he was born to be a performer and entertainer. Now, for his rendition of “Hold On I’m Coming,” I thought it was fantastic, although I kept hearing him channel Huey Lewis in his voice, after his previous performance of “The Power of Love.” All in all, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Casey in the final three of American Idol this year, although I have my doubts that he’ll win. But, if he really steps it up, it certainly is possible.

Lee DeWyze – “Treat Her Like a Lady”

Lee has a unique pop sound that sets him apart from the rest of this year’s American Idol contestants. Coupled with his guitar playing ability, he’s a definite contender for the win this year. In my humble opinion, when it’s all said and done, I believe that it’s going to come down to Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox for the win. Lee has consistently performed since his first showing on Idol this year. While his raspy voice is not my favorite to listen to, he definitely has thus far proven that he’s in his element on stage. He tends to be more unique than Casey James, yet pretty equal with Crystal. All in all, I’d say that Lee is in for the long haul as a recording artist. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him win American Idol this year, but he just needs to continue to stay on his game as he’s done so far. There’s really nothing more to say about his rendition of “Treat Her Like a Lady” than to say that it was a great performance. He was spot on, looking just as good as any professional singer or recording artist that you would see nowadays.

Crystal Bowersox – “Midnight Train to Georgia”

I’m not going to mince words here. In my humble opinion, Crystal Bowersox should be this year’s American Idol. I realize that contestants return to Idol each week due to popularity, but if I’m to judge solely on pure, raw talent and ability, Crystal has already proven herself to be worthy of the win. I’m not trying to diminish the talent of any of the others on the show, it’s just that Crystal arrived on the scene, already in her element, crazy gifted knowing who she is. Her rendition of “Midnight Train to Georgia” was awesome. I’ll admit that her piano playing felt a slightly uneasy compared to her usual guitar grace, but she still was outstanding. If I had to choose someone to win right now, it would be Crystal.

<itunes:subtitle>American Idol bids goodbye to Didi Benami, while it becomes more evident who has a chance of winning and who will most likely be voted off next.</itunes:subtitle>
 <itunes:summary>

I struggled this year over whether or not I would blog and podcast again about American Idol. I tried to stay out of it, but decided just this week to go ahead and give my two cents about this year's contestants. I'll try to give my rundown each week until the show is over. Following, you'll read or hear what my opinion is about the final 10 on Idol for this season. You may or may not agree with me, but I welcome your comments. Each week, the order that I list the remaining contestants will start with the one voted off (Didi for this week) and will end with the one that I believe, at this point, has the best chance of winning the competition. I hope you enjoy.

Didi Benami - "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted"

Still,</itunes:summary>

Prior to using Mixcraft BY MYSELF, I had paid a whopping $10,000 and spent a week in Nashville, TN doing an extensive recording project that resulted in a CD that I didn’t have much control over. I had a limited amount of time to use the studio and a limited amount of input from the sound engineer and ZERO CONTROL over the final product. While I “produced” my own CD, once I left the studio and headed back home, my creative input into the project consisted of no more than choosing the song order and the artwork and writing that was to go on the album cover.

Recently, one question that keeps coming up about recording and mixing with Mixcraft is that of editing vocal effects. I created a simple tutorial video a while back on how to add simple effects to your voice using Mixcraft. Since then, many have been asking how to actually edit or create a custom effect preset with Mixcraft. In response, here’s a quick overview on how to edit to achieve a particular overall effect on the voice or track. Keep in mind that I do not show you how to achieve a particular sound, but give a general overview of how to tweak the effect presets to achieve a custom, desired result. Using effects when recording vocals or music is purely subjective and really depends upon what you’re trying to achieve as an end result.

Here’s another video tutorial for Mixcraft 4.5. As you probably already know, it’s my strong opinion that Mixcraft is the best online recording software that you can download, for the money. Mixcraft is easy to use and works great for recording a podcast, recording vocals, mixing, and other home recording projects. It’s great for beginners and recording professionals alike.

The video below describes a simple, yet important aspect of Mixcraft 4.5 – how to use the “Project” Tab. In follow up videos, I will be explaining the uses of the other three Mixcraft Tabs that are located across the bottom of the Mixcraft User Console.

In particular, on the Project Tab in Mixcraft, you can adjust the recording project tempo, key and time signature. You can also designate the default folder where you can save your project files, as well as add effects to the recording project as a whole.

As you can see from the title of my website – “Recording Wiz,” I’m all about making the whole recording process easy, whether it has to do with recording audio OR recording video. Mostly, here at www.recordingwiz.com, I talk about audio recording and podcasting, mainly because it’s much easier to listen to something at any time, than to have to watch while you’re listening. In fact, when you’re in the car or on the treadmill or simply walking down the street, your eyes are everywhere, but your ears can be in tune with whatever happens to be on your iPod or mp3 device.

Video for Blogging

That being said, there’s still a place for video in the blogging realm. And, that’s the reason for this particular post. You see, a lot of people are interested in the whole video process, but really have no idea how to go about it. Sure, you may be able to figure out how to embed a YouTube video on your website or blog, but apart from that, do you really know how to create, publish and post your own videos? Well, if you do, congrats. As one who’s now doing his own videos, I have to say that it can be pretty involved and complicated. And since I call myself the Recording Wiz, I felt that I’d be neglectful if I found something that makes publishing your own video a cinch and didn’t share it with you. That’s why I wrote this short blog about the Video Web Wizard.

In a nutshell, here’s what Video Web Wizard does:

Multiple Video Conversion – Create video playlists quickly & easily by converting multiple videos at the same time

Download Videos From YouTube – Use videos you’ve already uploaded to YouTube & put them in a more professional video player

Web Page Templates – Choose from 50 different web pages, minisites, and video optin templates when converting a video

Five Brand-New Players – Including two video playlist players, two widescreen players, and one compact player

Thirteen Video Skins Included – Spice up your videos with these “picture frames” for online videos

Brand Your Videos – Overlay an image or logo on top of your video

Generate Code Feature – Easily put your video on an existing web page.

There’s a lot more that Video Web Wizard does. I won’t write about it all here, but if you’re looking for a simple, fast way to put video on your blog or website (that you or someone else creates, then check out their website.

Check out the Video Web Wizard page>>

Here’s the latest tutorial video on Mixcraft. This video is approximately 10 minutes long and shows how to add vocal effects to your recording project, particularly to a single vocal track. Again, if you’re new to Mixcraft or have never tried it before, check it out by downloading it from the Mixcraft page here on the RecordingWiz.com website.

Points to remember when adding vocal effects to your recording

Click the “fx” button to access your “Effects Menu”

Any time you see a little menu triangle (arrow), click on it to see your menu options. This is how you choose your effect, as well as a preset.

Make sure that the box is checked to the left of the added Effect and Preset – otherwise the vocal effect will not be processed.

Keep in mind that the effects listed in the effects popup box will be processed in the order that they’re listed. Reordering them WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE in your overall vocal effect.

To reorder an effect, Click on the effect line in the popup box and click the “up” or “down” arrow on the right of the effects popup box.

There are lots of effects to choose from. Experiment with them to create all kinds of unique sounds when singing or podcasting.

Points to remember when adding vocal effects to your recording

	* Click the "fx" button to access your "Effects Menu"
	* Any time you see a little menu triangle (arrow), click on it to see your menu options. This is how you choose your effect, as well as a preset.
	* Make sure that the box is checked to the left of the added Effect and Preset - otherwise the vocal effect will not be processed.
	* Keep in mind that the effects listed in the effects popup box will be processed in the order that they're listed. Reordering them WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE in your overall vocal effect.
	* To reorder an effect, Click on the effect line in the popup box and click the "up" or "down" arrow on the right of the effects popup box.
	* There are lots of effects to choose from. Experiment with them to create all kinds of unique sounds when singing or podcasting.
