The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  Bill Fritz will be making the presentation on the changes to critical slopes under consideration.  We will then go to rooms for  individual Council meetings.  We need to begin each Council meeting with the conversation about critical slopes.
 
This will be a really good discussion for everyone because most of the slopes recommended for protection  are shown on the Master Plans as “Parks and Green Systems”.  You all are very familiar with the Crozet Master Plan and will be able to see the relationship between the plan and a potential ordinance to better preserve the features that are so important.
 
I just wanted to let you know about this in advance as I see you have prepared a fairly full agenda for Crozet things as well.
 
Thanks for the good work I know you will do in comparing our critical slopes maps to the Crozet Master Plan and the input you will provide.
 
You should be happy to know that Rebecca Ragsdale will be your facilitator for the discussion.  I know she is glad to be working with you again.

Crozet needs a hotel. The County of Albemarle, recognizing this, “Albemarle County will take steps to make itself eligible for a state financing program that could support the construction of hotels.”

Catlin said the county’s economic development team is supportive of having a small hotel, one that keeps the character of Crozet intact, while filling the critical deficiency for adequate lodging. She estimated a future hotel would have between 30 to 60 rooms.

- What’s the status of the proposed hotel in Old Trail?
- Could Crozet support two hotels? (I think yes, so long as they’re small and Crozet-ish)

In a sentence – we’ll go back. On a father’s day lark, my wife and I went to Restoration and were impressed with the menu and the fact that they have only local beers on tap.

The latest entry in the Old Trail clubhouse restaurant space is Restoration. The renovation is a nice one; next time I stop in I’ll go for dinner and get some pictures.

The Crozet Gazette noted in April:

Local restauranteurs Andrew Watson and Kelley Tripp, who have been involved in six successful restaurants including Boylan Heights and Mellow Mushroom on The Corner in Charlottesville, will launch a new restaurant at the Old Trail Golf Club later this spring. The restaurant is designed to serve golfers, host weddings and events, and welcome families from Crozet and beyond.

Design the RealCrozetVA logo!

You may remember last month when I talked about how I thought it was time for RealCrozetVA to have a logo.

As RealCrozetVA has been focused on the Crozet community since its inception, I figured the community could design the logo. I’d love for the logo to be something Crozet-focused designed by a Crozetian. Art/design-minded parents, feel free to assist your kids if they choose to draw something. Ultimately, I foresee having the final design tweaked a bit so that it’s ready, so if you enter a logo, please be prepared for it to be shined up a bit.

Really, I want this to be something of and for the community. So … design away!

My goal is to have the logo (or text saying RealCrozetVA.com) on a t-shirt no later than 13 September – the 8th birthday of RealCrozetVA!

Beginning in the late summer of 2014, Western Albemarle High School will play host to a new Environmental Studies Academy.

“This truly is an exciting development for our school and our community,” WAHS principal Dave Francis said in an Albemarle County Public Schools press release.  “Our objective for all students is to prepare them for post-graduate success in colleges and universities and in high-value professional fields….[T]his academy will position students for that success.”

All 9-12 graders in Albemarle County will be eligible to apply for the Academy. In the first year, there will be approximately 25 seats.  The specifics of the admissions process remain to be completed.

This sounds like a very good start to making WAHS more competitive.

I received the following from the police Department describing a crime problem in Crozet. Jim Crosby and I have been working to establish what we call the Crozet Safety Corps and will be having a meeting at the fire house Monday, June 10th at 7:30. At that meeting will be Officer Andy Gluba, who is a Crime Prevention Officer and will speak on the subject of setting up Community Safety Groups in Crozet. Our group will also be looking at the subject of Emergency Preparedness. We have set up a web site: www.crozetsafetycorps.org. I hope any members of the community who are interested in joining us or would just like to hear from our police department will attend?.

?I wanted to let you know that the Crozet area has been experiencing a rash of vehicle break-ins over the past three and half weeks specifically in the Wickham Pond/Old Trail area. We have also experienced a rash of vehicle break-ins in the Ivy Road area specifically in the Canterbury Road area. It does not appear that the vehicle break-ins in the Ivy area are related to the Crozet area break-ins. I want to reassure you that we are aware of the problems and have dedicated the resources to hopefully apprehend the offenders.?

?Please communicate with your neighbors and friends that live in these area, to lock their car doors and secure all valuables before they go in for the night. The suspect(s) appear to be entering vehicles that have been left unlocked and have small amounts of cash and electronics left in the vehicles. Please let everyone know to be diligent in calling the police department should they see anyone in the neighborhoods late at night that should not be there. It appears that the suspect(s) are roaming the neighborhoods after midnight to about 5:00 a.m. in the mornings.?

The Crozet Fire Department is once again organizing the Crozet Parade – (bolding mine) ?

This year the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department Independence Day parade will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 6, 2013. Lineup will begin at 3:00 P.M. at Crozet Elementary School and end at Claudius Crozet Park. The theme for the parade will be, “America the Beautiful!” There will be field judging for Fire & Rescue apparatus at Claudius Crozet Park after the parade. Awards will be presented at 8:00 P.M. Food, beverages, and other festivities to include a softball game between the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department and the Peachtree Ball Coaches will immediately follow the parade. Fireworks begin at dark.? ?If you would like to be a part of the 2013 parade, please email: events@crozetfire.org for access to a Parade Entry Form. Please include in your email the following:

I’m always asked “how often does the train run in Crozet?” … and my answer always is “so often I don’t pay attention to it except when it’s not running.”

That said, I’m going to do a “count the trains in Crozet” day this Friday. I have no idea what the schedules are, but I’m going to try to count them this Friday. So if you’re around and thinking about it, please comment here what kind of train, whether it’s freight or passenger, whether it seems heavy or light, and which direction it’s going. If nothing else, hopefully this will be a fun experiment in crowd-sourcing local information.

As you may be aware by now, there has been an incident at a home in proximity to our school. Police are investigating the incident and have informed me that there is no threat to our students and school.

We are proceeding according to our normal routines, including pick-up and transportation procedures this afternoon.

Crozet Gator Kickoff Event today at pool from 3- 5PM

The Crozet Swim Team is a perfect way to keep your child active and have a lot of fun this summer. Not only do we have an amazing coaching staff, but we have family fun events through out the summer including weekly spirit activities, a private pool party for swimmers and their families, a float in the July 6th parade in downtown Crozet and many other special surprises.

Our kick-off event is at the Crozet Pool today from 3-5 pm.

  It is a great opportunity to meet the coaches, ask questions, and pick up your CGST gear. Our team is a close-knit community organization open and welcoming to all, and our excellent coaching staff is dedicated to ensuring that every swimmer feels like a part of this great team, receives lots of stroke technique feedback and coaching, and has a fun, terrific time! Our team success, tremendous over the recent years, flows from this principle and our amazing community of families and swimmers.

The teams’s first day of practice is tomorrow. Unlike years past, our pool is heated this year, which means that no matter the weather, our pool will be nice and warm! Our after-school practice schedule, starting this Monday the 20th and continuing through June 11th, is as follows:

7-8s: 3:30-4:20

I’m glad I went and live-tweeting the Crozet Community Advisory Council meeting last night; the interaction on Twitter highlighted how important it is to have outside voices paying attention but also that outside people are paying attention. I pay a lot of attention to what’s happening in Crozet – both because I love it and live here, but also so I can better advise my clients. Had I not attended and tweeted last night, I wouldn’t have known about a lot of the stuff listed below. Highlights -

- Someone is apparently interested in the Barnes Lumberyard

- 1306 and 1278 Crozet Avenue are going to have some sort of infill redevelopment (nothing showing yet at Albemarle’s County View)

This year’s Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival is this weekend; it should be a great weekend, hopefully with equally great weather.

It’s a big weekend in Crozet. What other events are there? (They’ll be added to the Crozet Calendar if you let me know)

The Crozet Farmer’s Market is on Saturday from 8 to 12 on Tabor (I’d suggest walking or biking if you can … traffic’s liable to be hairy). (Update: a Facebook commenter notes that the Farmers’ Market sign is at its old location on Crozet Avenue, presumably to seek to alleviate traffic this weekend. I’d still suggest walking or biking. )

It seems that the Crozet Arts & Crafts Festival brings the perfect opportunity for Crozet neighborhoods to have community yard sales. I know Parkside Village is having one (adjacent to Crozet Park) and while riding my bike to a home inspection in Grayrock, I noticed that Baragamin Park and Grayrock are having community yard sales on Saturday.

North Branch is having its annual music festival and silent auction (with a cake walk, face painting, and other children’s activities) called BandFair TOMORROW at Cardinal Point Winery, 1 pm – 7 pm.   You can purchase tickets at the gate tomorrow for $7.00 for a child ticket, $12.00 for an adult ticket, and $36.00 for a family of 4 or more.  Great local music and kid-friendly fun, with wine-tasting for the grown-ups right up the hill.   Don’t miss out on the fun!

My little one did the Dogwood Duathlon this past weekend (for the 2nd time) and had a blast. I wondered on Twitter if Crozet could do one, and I was quickly told that yes, not only can we, but we are.

Students from the Western Albemarle High School Leadership class will present a $1,000 donation to the Build Crozet Library fund on Friday, May 10 at 9:45 am. The presentation will be made to Fundraising Chair Bill Schrader and other library representatives on Library Ave. beside the new library (under construction).

This donation will earn the WAHS Leadership program a leaf on the Giving Tree planned for the lobby of the new library. The donation will be doubled due to the matching grant from BAMA Works, and will help to purchase seating in the Teen Area of the new library. Students raised the money by staffing concessions at football games and through their annual spring pageant, Mr. WAHS, organized by students Mac Outlaw, Colleen Flanagan, Montana Frayser, and Sierra Brown.

Mr. WAHS attendees were also asked to bring canned goods for donation to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. This donation is in line with the WAHS Leadership program’s local, community-based focus for all its fundraising events this year.

– Intermittent traffic restrictions on Interstate 64 between Charlottesville and Waynesboro will resume next week during operations to remove unstable soil from Afton Mountain above the highway at milepost 100.3 in Albemarle County.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 29, traffic on I-64 will be restricted in both directions for 30-45 minutes. The restrictions will continue through the day, ending between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The westbound right shoulder will be closed and work zone activity will begin at 7 a.m. each day but traffic will not be restricted before 9 a.m. The work is expected to continue through Thursday, May 2.

The restrictions will affect traffic from Exit 107 (Route 250/Rockfish Gap Turnpike) at Crozet to Exit 96 (Route 624/S. Delphine Avenue) at Waynesboro. Drivers should expect significant congestion and delays; passenger vehicles are encouraged to use Route 250 as an alternate route. Message boards along I-64 will advise motorists of the closures and expected congestion in the area.

Motorists should check VDOT’s traffic information web site, www.511virginia.org, or call 511 for real-time information about traffic conditions and delays.

A note received from Ashley Fitch via email about this past weekend’s James Sun memorial:

Today I decided to run the James Sun Memorial 5K to inspire my kids to exercise and to get them excited about moving to our new neighborhood where the race was held – Old Trail. I accomplished that goal, but what I didn’t expect was how inspired I would be by the event.

I was inspired by Mr. Sun, in which attending this event had to be difficult for him, took a few moments to kick a soccer ball to my young son and to thank the attendees for supporting his son’s memorial. I, also, was inspired by the Western Albemarle students’ leadership in organizing the event in memory of a deceased classmate and in making something positive come out of the tragedy. Lastly, I was inspired by seeing classmates and families run together for such a wonderful cause, an organization that helps support families who have lost a child.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing James Sun, but it was obvious that he left a positive impression on his classmates, and they, in turn, left a positive impression upon me. Our future will be in good hands with these leaders.

I encourage those of you who were unable to attend this wonderful community event this year to attend it next year.
