Wardrobe Reduction Project: EXPERIMENT

I've been thinking over that wardrobe reduction thing I have in mind a few days ago. I was thinking of building a more practical wardrobe collection that I can mix-and-match in fewest pieces possible. How many times have we purchased clothes we thought we'll be using in the future and ends up at the back of our closet because we have nothing better to pair them with? I have a 2-year old stack of that and they are still waiting to be worn. So I thought of coming up with a personal uniform. A personal uniform is a wardrobe you build that creates your signature look. It consists of basic pieces which you like and use often and that they actually all go together.

I made an experiment using Looklet and put together as many variations as I can using only a few basic pieces and I'm amazed with what i've come up with. I started out by picking pieces I usually wear, like tank and jeans and blacks and added in khakis for variety. It's really possible to come up with many looks by just using a few basic items repeatedly. Not to mention that I hadn't really used that much of accessories like scarves, or even changed shoes which will put the set in a whole new level. Some Looklet items are not exactly how I want them to look like, I can somehow visualize and tell which one works and which one doesn't, so a little bit of re-designing and re-shaping of pants and shirts may be made to complement my body and each item to create a distinct look. I could even start right now with my existing sets of blacks, khakis/flesh, denims and whites and mix and match the pieces with anything.

Now, that's a personal uniform I'd love to wear everyday. They all look comfortable and chic and it has the flexibility I needed for my daily activities.

This idea comes in very practical in building or rebuilding your wardrobe coz you don't have to purchase that much clothes. Some of the pieces are probably available in your closet. Just make sure that those pieces fit and look good on you. Also, make sure that the fabrication is of hight-quality to be comfortable under different weather temperatures and under its constant washing, hehe. If you'd want to add more pieces, you actually can, just stick within the realms of your theme (color, silhouette, and/or usage). When shopping, you can tell yourself right away if it's something you could use if you have this style direction set in mind. And since you're sure that you can maximize the items you're buying, you'd feel less guilty if that Marc for MJ tank is way beyond what a tank's price should be coz you're sure to get your money's worth from it. :)

Got my one-of-a-kind black acid washed jeans straight from the Lee show!d Aylaveht! (Thanks, Earl! :D) Took my board and did some breaking in for the pants. I read from one mag that jeans shape in your butt better if you wear it slightly damp to dry. The succeeding washes will shape it better as they wear it often that's why I think jeans are personal items you shouldn't share with anyone.

Actually, there was a place to go to last night. As soon as I put my eyeliner down, I got a txt msg from Epoy. Twas his birthday and it was an invitation to get effed up! I put on my heels and ran to the pad and was greeted with a Bacardi shot. I know, you don't shoot Bacardi, right? Needless to say, I woke up with a bad hangover after downing several glasses of Bacardi-Coke ;)

And, yeah, twasnt just me.

Wardrobe Reduction

I've finally moved in my last piece of junk to the new house last night. Dad helped, alright and I'm glad he did. At least he knows I'm living in a better condition. I also think that every person who thinks of starting a family must learn how important it is to have their own houses. Not their parents', not a rental apartment but a real house they could call their own. It doesn't have to be very big, just something that can serve as their family's homebase. It helps everyone glued in. Like in American movies when their child turned 18 and leave the house, the parents keep the teenage room intact, so when the child marries and get divorced or even during holidays, he/she has a place to come home to.

Now that the moving in process is finally over, I am yet fazed with another dilemma: How do I get all my clothes in one teeny tiny closet? And I'm not taking about the shoes yet.

I'm thinking, would it be possible for a person, with my job and lifestyle, to reduce his wardrobe into a few mix-and-match pieces? I'm starting to (slightly) envy people who wear uniform to work everyday. Other than that sets of uniforms they wear all week, they don't need to keep that much clothes for weekends and parties. I hope i could find a way to solve this, like wearing a personal uniform which can be worn in all types of weather conditions and events without looking over/under-done.

Well, that's something to figure out today.

Now, I'm off to a shoot and I need my coffee!

PACK-SHET, FATHER & PACKER

just got back from the old apartment to pack what's left unpacked . I tried not to be sentimental about it but as I gaze over the balcony and saw the Ayala skyline, I can't help but get teary eyed. I thought moving houses would be emotionally easy for me after all these years but sadly, no. I've moved in the 70% here in my new address and packing the other 30% makes me feel like I have to summarize 30% of my life in 4 more boxes. I have to devoid myself of any attatchement to an object and think if it is anything of use in the future before I shoot it in the box. It's a tough call. There were cards, little mementos, 2-yr old acrylic paints, year old odd buttons, notes, mementos, etc... If I die and become a superstar after I'm dead, there's no way of tracing my past back. Oh well...like the cherry blossoms tattoed on my arm, nothing as beautiful should stay as long.

BTW, after more than years without communication, I talked to my dad today. It was awkward and I can still feel his pain and embarrassment over the phone but he agreed to help lift boxes tomorrow. :)

Note to self: I'm a strong person. I'm a cold, heartless bitch. (repeat 3x)

Haloween 2009 is probably one that will go down on RCXY's book. Think Amazing Race-meets-Project Runway in creating my costume! I have to run from work and buy the cheapest available white cloth I can strip and mummify myself in three hours before make-up time. Buti na lang the neighborhood seasmstress Aling Azon magically found a way to put on together the strips and buti na lang there's SM for last minute costume requirements. I and the gang met up at Jakeys at Tony Galvez Salon in Cubao for make-up, and as I try on the dress, I just couldn't walk in it. I juj-ed it up to become a mini-dress so that I could make a long stride-supermodel walk. The typhoon came earlier as expected so we all have to brave the strong winds and protect our make-ups from the rain! We got to Cubao X dry, thanks heavens. Eventhough the rain, er, typhoon came harder, the music went blasting!

Project: Room Make-over!

edit: I haven't told you my plans of changing zipcode yet. Well, I am and I am saying goodbye to my old apartment. The decision wasn't a surprise as my inner boheme has been itching for months. I've lived in that room with a view for more than a year, and as I previously blogged, I'm the kind of person who can't live in one place. If this is US, I've probably gone around 55 states already. The goal really is to get a place as close to my little Manhattan (Ayala). Old home is Brooklyn (Evangelista), which is literally over the bridge and across the tracks.

I was the fab gay neighbor leaving on the top floor drinking coffee in Kimono robe at 1:30PM, looking ove the tall buildings of Ayala.

I now moved to San Antonio Village (which NY name i still have to make-up)- a suburban village with my long-time friends. I hang-out here often and do my blogging mostly here, as well. So now, convenience, wooden floors and company won over calm metropolitan skyscape view.

Now that I have a new lair, it's Project: Room Make-over Time!

I'm taking over my friend's Helga's room. It used to be white and cozy.
Now that I'm moving in and he's moving out, I decided to give the room a little make-over!
I have the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in mind when I was thinking of a theme. More on Tiffany's and less on the Holly Go Lightly apartment, though. I mean, I love Audrey Hepburn, and Moon River and the movie (who doesn't?) and all but for more "me", it'll be Tiffany on Crack.

A GLIMPSE OF THE "AFTER"

I and my bro painted the walls with the shade nearest to Tiffany Blue and it's called Simple Melody. Yes it's a color! I got it at Robinson's DIY shop where I only spent a hundred bucks for all 4 Liters of paints, brushes, white paint, hooks etc... I never thought i'll be using up my Robinson's Gift Checks until today. So, Thank you Robinson's. I got another 500-peso worth more left for the curtains. (Keep the GC comin' guys!)

I finally hung the vintage frames I've been collecting and grouped them on one side of the wall. I wasn't allowed to drill holes from the previous house.

Here's how it looks like with boxes and stuff, and all my kalat!

The room is not done yet. I'm having a hard time removing paint splatters on the floor. It's not easy even with paint thinner.

Time is running and I don't have anything to wear on our Halloween party... Oh, what to wear, what to wear! Going full scary is being frowned upon these days coz those scary make-ups annoys people which turns everyone i know to go slutty: sexy nurse, sexy bunny, sexy snow white, sexy what have you. They make halloween an excuse to wear something slutty and get away with it. In this side of town, halloween costumes gets inspiration from runway to reel. From poptarts to popstars. I'm thinking, I'm bringing scary back .

The mummy returns.

With not a thread in site, I still have no idea how to start on this one.

I'm hopping 3 parties later tonight: One is a Brazilian-themed birthday, next is the annual Creme Ball and saving the best for last- Science Fiction at Cubao X. Thing is, how do I connect mummies with Brazil. Hmmmm...
And that's just tonight, there's another party set on Saturday!
I love Halloween better than Christmas.

I was at SM Mall of Asia (again, I know) the whole day yesterday, not for Fash week but for another SM shoot. I've been doing SM shoots for quite a while now and I realized that in one section, I had all my works mounted on walls and on racks (Okay, not all but many of them), and I feel like I'm in my own little big gallery. There are those that I've shot 2 years ago and i can't believe that they are still use them (Man, I should've asked extra fee for that!). I think they already need to be changed, though.

One thing that amazes me about SM is that they are fashionably recent nowadays as compared to 4 years and beyond when knock-off of pieces arrive 5 sesons late. I believe they now dictate suppliers with up-to-the-trend pieces to produce. That and feeling the on what's selling in the market so that's quite a season late. Better than none,huh.

Enter frame, stylist. Our role is to actually put together last season pieces and make it look de mode until after 3 more seasons. Believe me, it's not easy! Imagine having a closet the size of a mall where each piece of item like belt is 80 meters away from where you're holding the pants! It's tiring! But it has it's upside, too. You get to experiment a lot. Just imagine having a 3-strorey closet filled with everything to play around with!

I was tired and disappointed with the pieces available that I thought of playing it safe for the shoot, do that safe and tired old SM look- waisted skirt, wavy hair hands on the waist, Looklet-style. I don't know if I'm the only one who does this but whenever I work with SM, I would always push a new idea. Something different from what they usually do and it would work. I'm glad I met someone from the inside who trusts me and my vision- Ms. Pat. She lets me take over the fashion side. Apparently, she gets "very good" remarks from her bosses. Okay so back to the choosing. I was about to do it lazily but when I saw those big wide photos (mine) beside those photos I didn't style, I remember that dream, once again. It's funny because as a stylist, I would secretly dream that I'd influence people on how to dress up someday. Something Kate Lanphear-ish or Nicola Formichetti or even like Rachel Zoe with a TV show and all. What struck me was the realization that I am actually realizing my dream. Shoemart or SM, is the largest chain of malls in the Philippines. And Filipinos love to go to malls! Imagine the exposure and subliminal brainwashing effect of the photos? So, in short, kinakarir ko sya!

And SM sponsoring the Philippine Fashion Week? That's a big leap! Their support to local fash scene will forever be appreciated.
