In addition to the High School Program, I will be co-teaching a post-summit field trip workshop with the very talented photographer and DSLR video expert, Ian Shive. Together we will be exploring the use of DSLR cameras to record and compile video clips into a dynamic and engaging multimedia production.

It’s also a fantastic time to celebrate the year and rejoice in family and friends. I’m traveling at the moment, and while visiting a good friend in Atlanta Georgia, he suggested that we stop by and photograph a house with perhaps the definitive collection of inflatable decorations. We visited the residence just around sunset, so the light illuminating the ornaments and the ambient natural light would be well balanced.

As a child, we used to take a drive every Christmas eve, just after church to see what decorations were around in our area of New York. It was special to see so many other people, in other areas of the country just as thrilled about someone’s extravagant display as I was as a kid.

For one of the articles, I’ve decided to revisit some images from a past trip to Lake Louise in Canada. It’s a truly amazing place – one you just can’t get enough of, it’s almost unbelievable. I thought I would share one of the pictures I worked on with Nik’s newest HDR software. There will be an upcoming article on the creating of the image (it was really easy) in the upcoming newsletter – check back in a few days and the article should be up. The association is responsible for helping the park, and was a great positive influence on my project in the area. I’ve know the director and staff for several years, and have nothing but the greatest respect for the important work they do in the area.

We held our class at the Pocono Environmental Education Center, and traveled throughout the area visiting this year’s hot spots for fall colors. Amazing reflections, waterfalls, and delightful macro shots were taken by this year’s students during our weekend adventure.

In looking through some of the student’s personal websites, I thought I would highlight one of the students – Paul Schmitt. We visited Bass Harbor Lighthouse, and got really lucky with some amazing light. Here’s one of the HDR I snapped off as a teaching example. It’s a composite of 5 pictures at different exposures, blended in Nik Software’s HDR Efex Pro. Enjoy.

These images were taken at Little Hunters Beach in Acadia National Park in Maine. They are composed of multiple exposures, and were processed in a couple minutes using the new software. I had previously been using Fotomatix’s HDR software to process, and wanted to try Nik’s newest plugin. I wasn’t disappointed – see for yourself.
