CLARET, France — May 23, 2013 — NETIA today announced that Algeria’s JIL FM, a channel of national broadcaster Radio Algérienne, has upgraded to the Radio-Assist(TM) 8.1 digital audio software suite. JIL FM is using the company’s new music scheduling module to automate playout of a well-balanced blend of Algerian and international music. By migrating to Radio-Assist 8.1, JIL FM gains functionality that includes NETIA’s Activity Watcher, which simplifies tracking of changes made to playlists and the overall system.

“Radio Algérienne has worked with NETIA software for the past five years and has been very satisfied with Radio-Assist’s intuitive operation, efficiency, reliability, and rich functionality,” said Mourad Ouadahi, director at Radio Algérienne. “When version 8.1 presented a new music scheduling tool, we took the opportunity to upgrade the system at JIL FM and completely automate broadcasts while maintaining our strategic mix of popular domestic and international music.”

JIL FM (Generation FM) is Algeria’s first radio channel dedicated entirely to young listeners. The channel, launched at the beginning of 2012, is broadcasting its programs throughout the whole country in Arabic, Berber, and French. Its trendy format and entertaining programs have helped the channel to reach a larger audience every day. Like its parent broadcaster, Radio Algérienne, JIL FM has built its broadcast workflow on NETIA’s Radio-Assist software suite.

The NETIA support team worked with JIL FM to prepare the channel’s staff and audio database for the migration to version 8.1. With music management tools integrated into Radio-Assist 8.1′s FederAll playlist preparation module, users can now automate playlist generation according to preset criteria, business policies, and a wide range of intelligent options for sequencing music. At JIL FM, the software today enables balanced music scheduling that is consistent with the radio station’s strategy: 60 percent Algerian music and 40 percent international music, with a constant focus on new hits. Administrators at JIL FM also have begun using the Activity Watcher module to monitor all users and actions taken on the system.

More information about the Radio-Assist 8.1 software suite and other NETIA solutions is available at www.netia.com.

Metro Nashville Public Schools’ music education initiative, “Music Makes Us,” provides students at Nashville’s Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School with a student-run record label mentored by Warner Music Nashville and a complete world-class recording studio designed, equipped and guided by the efforts of P&E Wing members

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (May 21, 2013) — On May 8, 2013, leading members of The Recording Academy® Producers & Engineers Wing®, along with Nashville public officials, representatives from key sponsors, members of the media and more attended a red-carpet event celebrating the grand opening of the new recording program and facility at Nashville’s Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet School. On hand to help commemorate the occasion were Nashville Mayor Karl Dean; Scott Hendricks, Senior Vice President of A&R for Warner Music Nashville; Nancy Shapiro, The Recording Academy Senior Vice President, Member Services; Pearl-Cohn Principal Sonia Stewart; Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Director Dr. Jesse Register; and more. The studio, part of the first-ever student-run record label in a high school (announced earlier this year by Mayor Dean, Dr. Register, and John Esposito, president/CEO of Warner Music Nashville), was designed and assembled by members of the P&E Wing, who contributed their time and talents over the course of the last year. Pearl-Cohn is the only entertainment magnet high school in the country. The studio will serve the school’s Academy of Entertainment Management and Academy of Entertainment Communication divisions.

Addressing the crowd of more than 100 Nashville luminaries assembled in the school’s lobby, Nancy Shapiro commented, “When you ask the P&E Wing to work on something, you better be dreaming big.” Members of the Pearl-Cohn Subcommittee of the P&E Wing, including Subcommittee Chair Jeff Balding, Nashville P&E Wing Committee Chairman Chuck Ainlay, Steve Durr, Ben Fowler, Julian King, Sam Lorber, Nick Palladino, Terry Palmer, Matt Schlachter and Nashville Chapter President Jon Randall Stewart, all contributed their collective knowledge, wisdom and passion to the project, which features a 32-channel API 1608 console and JBL® Professional M2 Master Reference Monitors in the main control room and two 5.1 surround sound post/editing suites equipped with SSL Nucleus DAW controllers. Additionally, the facility is equipped with products from Audio-Technica, Fredenstein Professional Audio, the HARMAN® Professional brands (AKG® Acoustics, JBL Professional and Lexicon®) and Shure. Representatives from these supporters were in attendance at the red-carpet event to help celebrate the studio’s opening.

Subcommittee member Steve Durr of Nashville-based Steven Durr Designs also served as the designer for the studio, laying out the acoustical and ergometric concepts. His portfolio includes studios for Austin City Limits, The Black Keys, Mark Ronson, Lenny Kravitz and Zac Brown. He stated, “I tried to achieve a design that would allow students to experience recording music with both machines and people,” Durr explains, citing the large control room that will allow several students and teachers to work comfortably using drum machines, digital samplers and synthesizers as well as the recording equipment, and the sizable tracking room where they will be able to capture great recordings of live musicians playing in ensemble. “What I hope this ultimately accomplishes is that kids will now be able to learn about making music in an environment that was designed around great sound. Kids who have been brought up on MP3s can experience what music can really sound like. That can change their lives.”

The studio, which cost $1.2 million to build and outfit (not including thousands of hours of donated labor), is a multi-room facility with a spacious control room whose sleek design belies the challenges it posed to make it conform to classroom and other design requirements, such as adapting access to the API 1608 console for ADA compliance. “There was so much that went into this that goes way beyond the typical recording studio,” said Nashville P&E Wing Co-Chair Chuck Ainlay, a GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/engineer who has worked with artists including Mark Knopfler, Miranda Lambert, George Strait and Peter Frampton. The studio also features several isolation booths and two 5.1 surround sound editing suites with acoustical treatments donated by Acoustics In A Box and Perdue Acoustics. In addition, the facility houses a multi-station teaching area with individual Apple iMac-equipped workstations for 30 students connected to the teacher’s station and to the studio.

Multiple GRAMMY Award nominee Jeff Balding says the project was about giving back to the community, but it was also a technical challenge in which P&E Wing members were eagerly engaged. “It’s great to see the whole community come together over this — teachers, artists, engineers, producers, and more. I believe in pouring our experience into the generation coming after us. If we can take our ceiling and make that their floor, it will allow them to take our industry to a much higher level, and that’s exciting to me.”

“My vision for Music City is to have the best music education program in the world,” Mayor Dean said. “The music industry and philanthropic community have embraced this vision and are working tirelessly with the city and Metro Schools to make it a reality. The opening of this label and studio are wonderful milestones in the development of Music Makes Us and moves us closer to that ultimate goal.”

Balding continued, “We wanted to get the feel of a real recording studio here, but we also knew it needed to function as an actual classroom.” He added that even through the Pearl-Cohn studio is an amalgam of state-of-the-art technology and the exceptional technical experience of the P&E Wing members, it’s far more than the sum of its parts. “This is something that will always be here,” he says. “It’s for future generations of music creators.”

About Music Makes Us
Music Makes Us is a joint effort of Metro Nashville Public Schools, Mayor Karl Dean and music industry and community leaders. The Music Makes Us initiative will lead the nation in music education. With a focus on music literacy and student participation, Music Makes Us is strengthening traditional school music while adding a contemporary curriculum that embraces new technologies and reflects a diverse musical landscape.

NEW YORK: AES 135th Convention Committee Papers Co-Chairs, Brett Leonard and Tae Hong Park, have announced an extension of the call to the professional audio community for technical papers proposals. The new deadline is Wednesday, May 29, 2013.

“We have already received a number of strong abstracts and completed papers,” reports Brett Leonard. “We anticipate a particularly strong turnout for this year. And, we want to make sure that our review board has as many options as possible in order to maintain the quality and diversity of our presentations. By reaching out to a wider segment of the professional and educational sectors we hope to add a number of atypical but eminently worthwhile subjects.”

“We recognize the fact that meaningful papers can originate from beyond traditional academia,” states Co-Chair Tae Hong Park. “Our goal is to develop the most stimulating, comprehensive and authoritative Papers Program possible. Points of origin are far less critical than points of fact, theory and originality.”

In addition to sharing knowledge and opening constructive dialogues on issues which impact on the professional audio community, presenting authors will have their Papers included on the CD-ROM of the full Papers / Posters Program, and, student members will be eligible for the Student Paper Award.

Authors may submit proposals in three categories:

1. Complete-manuscript peer-reviewed convention papers: www.aes.org/135th_authors
2. Abstract-precis-reviewed convention papers: www.aes.org/135th_authors
3. Synopsis-reviewed engineering briefs: www.aes.org/135th_ebriefs

Category 1 and 2 proposals must be submitted electronically to the AES 135th proposal submission site at: www.aes.org/135th_authors by May 29, 2013

Category 3 – Engineering Brief authors must supply a short synopsis by Aug. 14, 2013 followed by an electronic manuscript. These manuscripts will be freely available in the AES E-Library to AES members.

The 135th Audio Engineering Society Convention will be held Oct. 17 – 20, 2013 at New York’s Jacob Javits Convention Center.

###

The Audio Engineering Society was formed in 1948 by a group of concerned audio engineers. The AES counts over 14,000 members throughout the U.S., Latin America, Europe, Japan and the Far East. The organization serves as the pivotal force in the exchange and dissemination of technical information for the industry. For additional information visit http://www.aes.org

STOW, OH, May 15, 2013 — Audio-Technica U.S., a leader in transducer technology for over 50 years, is unveiling its new Systems Integration Resource Center (SIRC) web site at http://sirc.audio-technica.com. Intended for consultants, contractors and system integrators, this password-protected web site offers Audio-Technica product information, price lists, spec comparisons and other resources. Once authorized by Audio-Technica, the consultant, contractor or system integrator creates his or her own user profile and receives 24/7 access to a host of A-T resources.

Visitors to the site will have access to dedicated product pages by Microphone Type, Microphone Line, Wireless Systems, Headphones, Accessories and Other Products, along with a search function. Resources and tools include Current A-T Prices, A-T Mic Comparison (with categories including Boundary, Gooseneck, Hanging, Headworn, Lavalier, etc.), “The Alternator” Competitive Product Comparison, Project Literature Search and a “Contact A-T” tab. The far right column of the main page is a “My Favorites” list, which is customizable for each visitor and can be used for current or future jobs.

“The consultant, contractor and system integrator market is very important to A-T,” stated David Marsh, Audio-Technica U.S. Director of Sales & Marketing, Installed Sound. “With this new dedicated website, we are continuing our quest to give our customers all the resources they need to become familiar with our product line and to find the right tool for the job. In the field, there is not always time for extensive research, and with this site, we are simplifying the process for our valued customers. Also, using the My Favorites section of the site creates a shortcut for spec’ing mics and accessories for consultants, contractors and system integrators who are doing similar jobs to ones they have done in the past. It’s a great resource.”

NEW YORK: Sergio Molho, Walters-Storyk Design Group Director of New Business Development, reports that company co-principals Beth Walters and John Storyk returned from a recent visit to India with a pioneering relationship with leading Pro audio/film industry solution provider/recording engineer, Aditya Modi. Following a series of client meetings and two lectures on design and acoustics at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai, Walters and Storyk finalized an agreement with Modi Digital for exclusive representation of WSDG throughout India.

“Aditya Modi is a 2nd generation audio/video/film industry professional,” Molho says. “Since 2007 he has managed Modi Digital, a successful technology sales/installation firm founded by his father, Vijay Modi – 40 years ago. In addition to his extensive business experience, Modi is an award-winning, creative audio engineer. Our agreement will see him working with us to introduce WSDG’s acoustic and architectural design capabilities to India’s thriving production community. We are extremely fortunate to be working with him,” Molho adds.

“We were deeply impressed with Modi’s artistic talents, his integrity and his social graces,” Beth Walters remarked. “He worked and studied in the U.S. for a number of years, his knowledge of and connectivity with India’s huge film and audio production community is unsurpassed. We have an abiding respect for Bollywood, and we are convinced that WSDG can be of great service this pivotal industry.”

After earning a Recording Arts Degree from Full Sail University in 2001, Aditya Modi moved to LA to work as a DJ. Returning to Mumbai after graduation, he became a successful recording engineer and businessman. In 2001 Academy Award-winning Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) enlisted Modi to manage his production/post production operations, and to serve as creative producer for his live and theatrical shows. Beyond his on-going relationship with Rahman, Modi established two personal recording, mastering & mixing facilities in Mumbai. In addition to writing for technical publications, he also hosts seminars for Music/Audio educational institutions.

“I have been aware of the Walters-Storyk Design Group from the earliest days of my career,” Modi remarked. “John Storyk’s work is highlighted by world-class credits that range from Electric Lady in 1968 to NY’s newest super studio Jungle City. I know WSDG’s international team will make a huge impact on Bollywood’s technical capabilities. And, I am honored to be representing such a distinguished firm.”

“We established an immediate rapport with Modi, and we relate to his entrepreneurial spirit,” John Storyk adds. “He is a true player in the Bollywood community. We are already beginning design work on our first project in India and,” he concludes, “We look forward to a long and warm working and personal relationship with Modi.”

Photo: Aditya Modi is representing the Walters-Storyk Design Group in India

###
The Walters-Storyk Design Group has designed over 3000 media production facilities in the U.S., Europe, the Far East and Latin America. WSDG credits range from the original Jimi Hendrix Electric Lady Studio in Greenwich Village to NYC’s Jazz At Lincoln Center performance complex, the KKL Luzern Concert Hall in Switzerland, broadcast facilities for The Food Network, CBS and WNET, over twenty teaching studios for The Art Institutes around the US, and corporate clients such as Hoffman La Roche. Recent credits include Jungle City, NY’s major new destination studio; private studios for Green Day, Jay-Z, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen and Alicia Keys. WSDG principals John Storyk, Beth Walters, and Dirk Noy lecture frequently at universities and industry events, and contribute regularly to industry publications. WSDG is a seven-time winner of the prestigious TEC Award for outstanding achievement in Acoustics/Facility Design, including 2012 for Jungle City. WSDG maintains offices in NY, SF, Miami, Buenos Aires, Belo Horizonte, Basel, Beijing, Barcelona, Mexico City and Mumbai.

CHICAGO — Terrestrial radio innovators GeoBroadcast Solutions (GBS) announce Jampro Antennas as a technology partner to advance its vision of helping radio broadcasters maximize over-the-air signals and grow revenues.

Jampro joins Harris Broadcast as exclusive technology suppliers for GBS MaxxCasting and ZoneCasting networks. MaxxCasting expands FM signal coverage areas, allowing broadcasters to take full advantage of their FCC-allotted spectrum. ZoneCasting, pending FCC approval, brings hyper-localization to radio through targeted over-the-air content delivery.

Jampro will supply all antennas, combiners and support equipment related to installation of these components. The custom antennas are specially designed for these networks, providing the advanced directivity required to ensure both maximized market coverage and highly-specific regional targeting.

Peter Handy, CEO of GeoBroadcast Systems, notes that Jampro brought a flexible approach to its antenna designs that uniquely fit requirements for MaxxCasting and ZoneCasting deployments. That flexibility extends to custom designs that meet the needs of each broadcaster — highly important as coverage patterns and targeting requirements will differ for each market.

“One critical concern is to minimize conflicts created between transmitting multiple signals across the same market,” said Handy. “Jampro clearly addresses these challenges with custom designs that can increase or decrease directionality. This is perfect for ZoneCasting, where we are geographically targeting content across multiple zones in a single market. Furthermore, it is ideal for spreading coverage into areas of a broadcast market that is lacking a clear over-the-air signal.”

The business benefit of integrating Jampro antennas therefore becomes very clear: A larger audience receives the signal due to their exceptional directionality, which means advertisers reach more listeners. This potentially translates to more advertising dollars for the broadcaster by opening new revenue streams.

Handy adds that GBS representatives had a number of conversations with broadcasters at the 2013 NAB Show that recognize the game-changing capability of ZoneCasting, but in the meantime are very interested in the opportunity to increase the distribution of their over-the-air programming through MaxxCasting. This is a perception that Jampro Antennas President Alex Perchevitch echoes.

“As an industry we have always accepted the fact that the legal signal coverage of a radio station is one model, while the actual signal coverage often falls considerably short of what a broadcasters is allowed to service,” said Perchevitch. “A solution like MaxxCasting that allows you to bridge that gap is not only unique, but very compelling.”

Harris Broadcast and Jampro often collaborate on radio and television transmission projects, bringing proven compatibility to GBS for out-of-the-box reliability. Harris Broadcast will integrate Jampro antennas and combiners across its single-frequency FM transmission networks, which incorporate multiple Flexiva™ transmitters and Intraplex® synchronizers as well as special GBS control software.

About Jampro
Jampro Antennas Inc., established to answer the need for quality broadcast systems at a reasonable price, is a leading supplier of antennas, combiners & filters and RF components for every application in the broadcast industry. Reputed for innovation and customization, Jampro builds each system to the specifications of the individual broadcaster.
About GeoBroadcast Solutions
GeoBroadcast Solutions, LLC (“GBS”) was formed in 2009 by founders who collectively have hundreds of years in the radio business. Peter Handy of GBS, Rich Redmond of Harris Broadcast and Alex Perchevitch of Jampro Antenna are amongst the architects and helped develop and test the GBS ZoneCasting technology, currently filed as a petition for rulemaking with the Federal Communications Commission. In 2012, GBS identified and launched MaxxCasting, the technology that helps broadcasters cover more of their signal coverage area. Both technologies are innovative, exciting and revenue generating.
