December 2011 Prayer Update

Sometimes I watch the news and I see so much more than the story. This was one of those times.

Millions saw the dramatic image of a young motorcyclist, unconscious under a car, with his motorcycle consumed in flames, a few feet from where he lay. As Brandon Wright had tried desperately to avoid a collision with a BMW, his bike slid to the front of the car and burst into flames.

Maybe Davy Crockett got me started - after all, Walt Disney said he was "the king of the wild frontier." Later, "Star Trek" came along to explore "space - the final frontier. "And, in many ways, the story of my life - the story of this ministry we do as partners with you - is about going to the spiritual frontiers. Because that's where the lost folks are.

Dear Friend,

Lewis and Clark are about to hang out with me in my office.

Well, a print of them anyway. There have been lots of frontier heroes in history, but those men's story and spirit are unique in the history of exploration. I'm hanging that print in my office because I can't think of a better visual reminder of what one of our great goals continues to be at RHM: exploring and engaging new frontiers with the Gospel.

There are so many reasons to love summer. Kids love it because there are no teachers. Teachers love it because there are no kids. Northerners love it because there are no coats. Parents love it because there's time to be family.

June 2011 Prayer Update

Dear Friend,

They don't make alarm clocks like they used to. At least...not like the one that helped bring me to Jesus.

It was the kind of dreaded morning mechanism that wakes you up with its jarring, clattering bell. And the lady in junior church sure woke me up with it. As she held that clanging clock, she said, "It's important to accept Jesus while there's time - because you never know when time is going to run out." Jesus became my Savior that morning.

As the news reports one upheaval after another, I can't help but wonder if God is holding up a big alarm clock - as a reminder that time is running out. Just the news magazine covers tell the story. One just says, "Revolution." Another reads, "World Upside Down." "Apocalypse Now" shouts another one. Subtitle: "Tsunamis. Earthquakes. Nuclear Meltdowns. Revolutions. Economies on the Brink. What the #@% Is Next?"

Dear Friend,

I'm a recovering news junkie. OK, maybe not recovering. But I have been overwhelmed with all the major news stories this past spring! One of the biggest news events was the "triple disaster" in Japan: first an earthquake, then a monster tsunami, and then a nuclear crisis.

Dear Friend,

Our little granddaughter can explain Easter to you pretty simply. "Jesus got hurt real bad. Then they put Him behind the rock. But then He came out from behind the rock!"

Now, her childlike explanation probably won't make it into many theological journals. But she understands the Gospel more than many Christian adults seem to. The Gospel is what Easter's all about. And the Gospel is what this ministry - and our heart match with you - is all about.

Dear Friend,

You can see it in pictures of me when I was little. There I am in my tourist-issue headdress and vest, proudly holding my bow and arrow. I guess I've been interested in Native people since I began reading every famous chief's biography I could get my hands on. One fact seemed very clear: The first Americans - Native Americans - have always been warriors. They had to be. Their greatest battles were for the survival of their people.

Dear friend,

It's that time of year when many wives get their lost husband back. Yes, football season is finally over.

Of course, football fans don't necessarily have to watch the whole three hours (!) it takes to play that 60-minute game. If you're crunched for time, you can just turn it on when they sound that two-minute warning. Because that's when both teams throw caution to the wind and go for broke. It's when many games are decided. So you do whatever it takes to get points on the board.

'Tis the season to be coughing - and sneezing and feeling yucky. It's the time when all good viruses report for active duty. And a viral infection is something you really want to avoid.
