While he has been voted the National Sports Writer of the Year an astounding 11-times, it seems justifiable to say that Reilly is one of the best entertainers of this era. Not only has Reilly effectively led the media in providing PED criticism in association with top professional baseball players (what he did to Sammy Sosa is worth reading), and some of his writing has led to significant charitable work, but the thing that makes him most significant is that he's hilarious. There's a reason his books are New York Times bestsellers.

Anyways, his latest column is interesting: The 10 Best Sporting Events to see Live.

NFL Quarterback Wins Lottery

Matt Cassel, a guy who hadn't started in a football game since high school before Tom Brady got hurt last year, just won the lottery. Not only did the 5th-year pro "make good" last season while starting 15 of 16 games for the Patriots (11-5 record), but he did so while throwing for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns. Ya, the Pats got screwed out of a playoff bid and Cassel missed-out on the Pro-Bowl because somebody played favorites and tabbed Kerry Collins instead (2,676 yds, 12 td), but this guy became an inspiration.

The Pats know Tom Brady is their New England's king, quarterback, and leader. They knew he's coming back strong this year, which is why they were ok with letting Cassel leave. The 27-year old USC grad recently signed a six-year deal with the K.C. Chiefs worth $63 million which includes $28 million in guaranteed money. All this for a guy who was drafted in the 7th round and didn't start a game in college, but who had the best coaching/mentors available: Tom Brady + Coach Belichick.

Great success story. Not only was the American League's 4-3 win simply meaningless (Ya, they're playing for home-field advantage in the playoffs, but lets be real here...it's an all-star game. Plus, the A.L. hasn't lost since 1996) and lacking what fans love the most; HOMERUNS. There were ZERO homeruns hit by both teams. Now, in any other game that's not such a big deal, but in the All-Star game, that's a bunch of baloney. Lame. I regret even watching this thing. Hey, the game had better ratings than America's Got Talent!...but that speaks for itself because America lacks talent. (but that's a whole other argument)

The no home-runs wasn't even what made the event suck. No, it was the fact that Tim Wakefield didn't pitch. The purpose of a stupid all-star game should be to recognize guys like Wakefield, who at 42 years of age is the most unique pitcher in baseball history, and having his best season after 15 years in the majors. Joe Maddon, the Rays' manager, and honorary A.L. manager for the game, was blatently playing favorites. Whereas, out of the five total Red Sox players at the game (the most of any MLB team), they had a total of three at-bats, one inning pitched, and four innings in the field. Out of the three Rays players who were at the game, they accumulated a total of nine-innings and had five at-bats. I won't hold a grudge for long because, after all, the Sox are the division leaders and the Rays are slowly falling towards their rightful spot in the cellar. They won't make playoffs...

Considering how Kevin Youkillis was only a couple thousand votes away from being named a starter and is one of the best defensive players at his position, (1b) you would think he would have received more recognition than a single at-bat. Tim Wakefield should win the Cy Young this year. Boston will have a parade just for him, and we can all drink celebratory beer while thinking about how Joe Maddon sucks. John Rambo says Joe Maddon sucks.

HOME RUN DERBY UPDATE!!!

Brandon Inge just hit ZERO homeruns in the first round, and thus, was eliminated. He probably won't hit 28 first-round dingers like last year's Josh Hamilton...but who knows!

This baller is known to us common folk as the one and only Brandon Inge of the Detroit Tigers. Inge, who's full name is actually Charles Brandon Inge (can you blame him for not wanting to be called Chuck?), is the ultimate handyman or utility player, whereas it was as a pitcher at Virginia Commonwealth University that he was drafted by the Tigers. Pitching, however, isn't where Inge earns his reputation as being one of the most athletic players in baseball. He is noted as being the only player to start on opening day with three different positions; at catcher, third base, and in the outfield.

So with 21 homeruns through 86 games thus far this season (while being a regular starter at third base), the 5'11 and 180 pound Inge thinks he has a legitimate shot at winning this Home Run Derby. I'm jumping on this guy's bandwaggon tonight because, while he is the uber-underdog in an event previously dominated by sluggers named *Sammy Sosa, *Jason Giambi, and *Bobby Abreu, and considering how the event is at St Louis's Busch Stadium, (not home run friendly) this guy has his back to the wall.

*denotes a steroid user

One thing that you might notice about the contestants in tonight's Derby is that Inge is alot smaller than all the other guys. Lets try and picture Inge going up against a guy like Ryan Howard in the octagon. Howard's 6'5 260 lbs of pure "Conan the Barbarian" strength would bite one of Inge's twig legs clean off. Consider it a no-contest fight. Anyways, Inge may be under alot of pressure to avoid severe embarrassment tonight, but what's the worst thing that could happen? Shoot, Jason Bay hit ZERO dingers in '05. But Bay does outweigh Inge by 20 lbs...

Yahoo Sports Ranks the top-10 worst Home Run Derby participants of all-time.

Think you could hit Tim Wakefield's knuckleball? Let me answer that for you: NO.

Wake up, people...because a great American Hero is leading the American League (we're talking about baseball) in wins. Not only has Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield been playing professional baseball since 1992 (Home Alone 2 was in theaters), but the guy throws a knuckleball. While recently being selected to his first All-Star team because he has achieved an unprecedented 11-3 overall record thus far this year, "Wake" is a hero in Beantown because he's simply been with the Sox since 1995.

Wake is a guy who began his professional career as a struggling infielder, but whom developed (and perfected) the ability to throw a knuckleball shortly thereafter because, as he says, "I just wanted to be able to say I tried everything I could to make it." As Wake throws his knuckleballs a "dizzying" 60 mph, he has something every other pitcher in professional baseball doesn't: a lack of arm injuries. In fact, he hopes to pitch into his 50's, and considering how at 42 years old he is on track to win 20+ games, this seems like a reasonable goal.

Tip your hat to Tim Wakefield and hand this guy a freaking beer. Considering how a knuckleball is completely unpredictable (play any MLB baseball videogame...and put yourself up against Wakefield...you'll see what I mean), its hard to say what Tim's looks like unless you've actually faced it. Imagine it being something like THIS...and then consider his knuckle'r doing something completely different on the next pitch.

Frank Schleck was part of the greatest bike crash of all time.

With the Tour de France being the big sports event this July, it's significant to watch videos such as this. Lets go Lance!

This is what happens when you ignore your team manager. This is only funny because apparently Frank Schleck didn't die that day after falling off the face of the earth. In fact, he's currently competing in this month's Tour de France.

This Motocross guy landed a double-backflip a few days ago

Cam Sinclair has guts. And now he's famous. Must be because he's Australian.

"Now THATS a knife."

The annual hot dog eating contest was Saturday. I can see this inspiring kids everywhere.

One thing that sets America apart from many countries world-wide is the means in which we eat. With "dollar-menu items", or anything-deep fried for that matter, often seen as routine staples in peoples' diets, coupled with an inability to maintain proper portion control, and a seemingly lack of physical activity in youths (schools that are cutting physical education curriculum...WTF!?), the percentage of obese people in the U.S. has been growing each year for a long time.

Many smart people have illustrated that the "fast-food" industry is appropriately responsible for an ever-expanding obesity rate. In fact, a noteworthy research firm conducted a nationwide phone survey and found that "57 percent of Americans believe the fast-food industry is responsible for diet-related diseases." (Article Link) In fact, recent statistics show that the U.S. holds a devastating lead world-wide in terms of its percentage of overweight citizens. America's 30.6% obesity rate is nearly 7% higher than the next closest, a country that also shares a border with the U.S.; Mexico.

So the 94th annual Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest, held annually on Coney Island every 4th of July, (great way to celebrate our nation's birthday) was this Saturday. A "real American dude" named Joe Chestnutt won this thing for the third-straight year by eating a profound 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The funny part about the media coverage of this "American contest" is that it was seen on ESPN and featured on the front page of newspapers everywhere. Yes, we do have a professional competitive eating league.

An American role-model?

Rick Nash just dangled your mom. Pay the man.

Yo, check it! (Ali-G reference...)

The Columbus Blue Jackets' Rick Nash is one of the top goal-scorers in the NHL. The 25-year old #1 draft pick in 2002 hasn't even hit his prime yet. A pure scorer who has more patented moves than Michael Jackson, Nash is what one might call a "dangler." (dangler: a player who possesses a remarkable ability to skate around the opposition while maintaining puck control) His stellar skills might not be not as widely-known because he plays in Columbus, Ohio, (What the heck else is in Columbus?) but this dude has simply dominated.

At 19-years old, Nash became the youngest player in NHL history to lead the league in goals, with 41. He has an impressive 194 goals and 355 points in 441 career NHL games thus far. Nash is also a fixture on Team Canada. Bro-hawk hairdo aside, I kinda like this guy.

Nash became the highest-paid player in Blue Jackets history yesterday when he signed an eight-year, $62 million contract. This past season, the sniper netted 40 goals and had a career-high 79 points. As you can see, the dude doesn't get many assists...but why would you want him to dish the puck to anybody else anyways? After all...he does things like this:

I was too busy staring at this girl to notice she did something remarkable.

Haven't yet bothered looking around to see if this video has exploded across the blog world, but its worth a post no matter what. What we have here is a college-aged girl who pulls off an astonishing trick demonstrating her guts and precision. I'm interested in the fact that the guy holding the bottle -not 20 feet from the swing- doesn't flinch as she lets the ball rip. The girl appears to be fineeeeeeee. Meh...its probably fake.

This would make a GREAT Bud Light commercial.

Pure Lax Burialage

So I inexplicably googled "man-gina athlete" and what came up with in images was a photo of a Duke lacrosse player. While choosing to respectfully bring his game (with the ladies) to Wichita State University (also in middle-of-nowhere Kansas), he became recognized as one of the best young pitchers in the nation. A two-time All-American and 1993 NCAA Player of the Year winner, Dreifort compiled a ridiculous 26-5 overall record in college and will soon be inducted in the college baseball Hall of Fame.

Lets just say that once he left college things didn't pan out like they supposedly should have. Drafted (again) in 1993 2nd overall behind Alex Rodriguez looked like a step in the right direction. Making his professional baseball debut in the Major Leagues is a pretty big deal as well. (for all nincompoops out there...that is EXTREMELY uncommon) Pitching a scoreless inning as a reliever in that debut is freaking awesome...but it didn't last the whole year. In that first season, he compiled an 0-5 record and posted a 6.21 ERA. On top of that, he missed the entire 1995 season because of an arm injury. Bad. Very bad. Oh, btw...he was on the Dodgers.

He came back from those injuries and pitched mediocre for the next few years but never had a winning-record. After earning a career-best 12-9 record in 2000, however, the Dodgers had to try and re-sign Dreifort, a free-agent, that off-season. His agent was a dude named Scott Boras. You've probably heard of him. Let's just say that this Boras character can influence pretty much anybody. He convinced the Dodgers that his client, Dreifort, was a BIGTIME talent, even though through his six-year career he only had one winning record. Because of Boras' socialist negotiating skills, Dreifort was signed to an unprecedented five-year, $55 million contract. He just won the lottery.

Consider this guy one of the biggest busts in baseball history. After signing that big contract in 2001 Dreifort's health began to deteriorate. He barely pitched that first season with the new contract. After elbow reconstruction surgery kept him from pitching until the end of 2002, shoulder, knee, and hip injuries came into the mix. In 2004, the Dodgers medical staff advised the team that Dreifort would never be able to pitch more than only a few innings at a time. On that BIGTIME contract, Dreifort compiled a 9-15 record and 4.53 ERA while only appearing in 86 games.

Oh, and for the record, Dreifort recently just had his 22nd surgery while trying to deal with the injuries that forced him to retire from baseball following the 2004 season. What happened to all that money?...dude still got paid! Hells ya I used Wikipedia!

Life at the bottom of a pig-pile must be brutal.

Even though the moment is brief and filled with so much excitement and adrenaline, being that guy (lets say the winning pitcher) that gets mobbed by his teammates in the post-game celebration, which almost always turns into a pile of screaming bodies and suffocation, is a tough task.

This photo was taken after the LSU tigers baseball team beat Texas in the NCAA baseball championship. That kid lying belly-up at the bottom of the pile could be their manager for all we know. (69th overall and right out of high school) The Mariners had no idea what his true potential would be. Obviously, the goal of any baseball player balling in the minors is to work his way into "the bigs". After a lack of progress in the farm system by Womack, which was evident by his lousy stats and his inability to advance past their single-A team in Wisconsin, The Mariners said adios amigo and cut him. He's now playing ball, and still living the dream which is to be paid to play a game you love, in some independent league out west.

Want to know why he hasn't lived up to his potential? Because his swing looks something like this:

NBA draft comes and goes. I'm left wondering "when's football season?"

Ok, so I don't know diddly about basketball. Never played it. I'm the kind of basketball fan who is absolutely more interested in the college game over the NBA. Not a huge fan of the NBA...to be honest with you its kinda boring. The NCAA tournament (no, not the women's tournee) is what makes March the most exciting month of the year. I just don't smell that same excitement while watching pro ballers jog down the court while casually hitting jumpers. The NBA is slow and boring.

This is headed in the wrong direction. The point of this post is supposed to be about the most recent NBA draft. I didn't watch the draft on tv today and quite frankly, could care less. But I did look over the first round results just ten minutes ago. It's 11:30 pm.

I noticed something particularly interesting...

Can somebody explain to me why the heck the Minnesota Timberwolves would take THREE point guards in the first round? Was the talent pool super-shallow this year or what? I mean, two of these guys are only 6'1 so its not like they have alot of flexibility to play multiple positions. See it for yourself.

Three Dallas Cowboy linemen have a band.

Offensive linemen Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo, and Cory Procter of "DA BOYS" have been composing sweet jams together this off-season. The three-hundred pound linemen have teamed up with another dude (who doesn't have NFL ties but fits in because he is fat) who can apparently twiddle his fingers on an instrument called a guitar, and are calling themselves Free Reign. They indeed actually just signed a record-contract with some company in Australia. (wtf?)

Free Reign's genre can be described as a "retro-80's dance/disco explosion". They implement techno beats and strobe lights with organ solos and high-octave singing. Their lyrics are suggestive and aim to target disco's primarily gay fanbase. Each band member brings his own persona to the performing stage; Davis can be seen wearing a police officer outfit, Colombo (a BC alum) dresses up like a cowboy with ass-less chaps, Procter will usually be seen sporting a sailor uniform, and the "other fat guy" wears an outfit resembling that of a native indian. Their ground-breaking hit entitled "Macho-Man" has proven to be very popular throughout the gay scene.

Don't believe me? Read it here (ESPN)...

They have a Myspace Page.

Sidney Crosby sleeps with Stanley Cup...wakes up next morning with herpes.

Yes, this is real. Deadspin

Sidney Crosby is barely 21 years old and is one of the most gifted hockey players of the modern era. What I want you to do is (for your own sake) turn the volume on your computer down all the way. Than, sit back and enjoy the top ten big hits from college football's 2008-2009 season.

What I do like, however, is seeing dudes blow people up. When you talk about being wet and cold, this is what happens: balls are embedded. Does the public underestimate the heart and courage of these millionaire golfers? Article

John Daly has had embedded balls his entire life. In fact, his gut is so large and his arms so stumpy that life in general is a struggle, let alone cleaning his balls. This is why he isn't playing at the U.S. Open this weekend.

If you live in New England from November-February...your balls will be embedded the whole time.
