c. Become an Affiliate: Even if you do not want to make Web Marketing your bread and butter, register in affiliate sites such as ClickBank or Commission Junction. Search to see if your chosen vendor offers an affiliate program on these sites or in most cases they will have a link on their own site for their affiliate program. Most companies that offer electronic products e.g: ebooks, hosting plans, any kind of subscription media usually have a well established affiliate program since their incremental cost of selling every new customer is close to nothing except for a little additional cheap bandwidth. Sign-up is usually simple and takes a few minutes of your time but the payback is well worth the effort. Web marketers get most of their sales from affiliates so they price their products with a built in markup. If they get a direct sale it is just added gravy they love. Case in point, I recently signed up for a years web hosting for $9.95 per month, a coupon gave me 20% off for the first month for $7.96 and Commission Junction affiliate program for this host pays out $100 to me after a 60 day hold period. Regular cost for this web hosting for a year - $119.40, my cost $17.41, that's an astounding 86% savings!!

d. Use Referral Programs: Web Marketers love word of mouth marketing. It saves them oodles of cash getting these customers through organic methods. If the product or service you are purchasing will be of value to your circle of friends make sure you send them a referral link. How about tweeting your followers with the product you just bought with the embedded referral link. They follow you since they think like you an buy similar things like you do so go ahead and spread the word.

e. Take Advantage of the Internet Tax Benefit: A lot of states such as California are trying to put sales tax on internet sales but it will take some time for all of them to get around to doing this. While we have this window of opportunity make sure you never buy a product from the store that has a physical brick and mortar presence in your state unless you are doing a store pickup and the cost of shipping negates any sales tax benefits you might get.

Page 1 Google Position for a micro niche in 1 week!!

Okay, so I decided to launch my first site HidefAV.com last weekend and to my greatest surprise I am in number 1 position for a load of my target search terms. Check out these stats from RankChecker:

hi def av - 1 out of 226,000
hidef av - 1 out of 10.5 million
hidefav - 1 out of 173
hidef review - 94 out of 1.3 million
hi def audio - 100 out of 21.2 million

High Definition is a hotly contested space so my micro targeting is focused on capturing traffic in a common abbrevaition "hidef av" used by searchers but overlooked by advertisers. A search with Google Keyword Tool reveals a couple of hundred searches on these keywords so it is a good place to start to capture some market share in this popular space. I achieved this after "drum roll" 1 crawl of my site by the Google bot observed through Google Analytics!!

What do I attribute to this success? Don't know for sure yet but these are my best guesses:
a. I am using a highly optimized WordPress theme called Thesis and following the steps in the NicheDemon program (see previous post) so far.
b. Google likes the site primarily because of the fresh content and I am certain the SEO friendly design of the Thesis template. I also have All in One SEO plugin enabled in Wordpress.

I have not done much in terms of promotion and SEO is just a Google image lightbox and Amazon widget. Income so far 59 cents. But hey it's a great start, and I am all pumped!!

NicheDemon EBook - An Awesome Resource to Get Started in Web Marketing

Okay I am usually skeptical buy EBooks from so called "Web Marketing Gurus" touting their millions but decided to but the bullet and purchase NicheDemon EBook because I was very impressed by the author Suzanne's DomainingDiva blog which is full of awesome information about web marketing. First of all, Suzanne is an excellent author with a great sense of humor which makes the information easy to read and understand. She talks of the 4 key steps to niche marketing:

1.Identify the niche
2.Identify the needs of the target audience
3.Identify the competition
4.Identify available products/monetization

and goes on to explain them in great detail. My favorite part is the 99 SEO tips at the very end of the ebook. There are a lot of good information freebies thrown in such as:
- 37 List Building secrets
- 118 Most Powerful Plugins for WordPress

All in all money well spent for a new Web Marketer like me. I need to get to my revenue targets in a jiffy and learning from the best to crash my time to success is worth its value in gold.

Buy vs Build decision for a Newbie to start a Money Making Website

I have been debating the Buy vs Build route to start off the quest of making money on the web. Many website marketplaces such as Sitepoint, Digitalpoint or even Ebay exists for buying ready-made websites with page rankings, traffic and income (depending on how much you are ready to pay for them).

It seems it might be an easier jump to buy a website with some traffic and income so there is:

a. financial commitment which propels one to devote time to get a return on investment
b. startup income stream which keeps the adrenaline flowing for the initial web entrepreneur
c. immediate traffic that gives one a base to build on and learn

The challenge though is to understand the true value for one of these sites and not to get ripped off in the process. My thumb rules for newbies wanting to buy a site are:

1. Do not spend too much on purchasing your first couple of sites, that way if you go wrong a few times the lessons learned will be not at the expense of burning a hole in your pocket
2. Buy sites in a domain that you understand - it is easy to get excited to buy a site that promotes rocket propulsion fuel if you are a rocket scientist or take interest in that kind of stuff. Stick to topics that are familiar to you at first.
3. Make sure you have programming support to fixup the sites and improve them - no matter what the current revenue stream, there is something fundamentally wrong with a site for which it is being sold. Make sure you evaluate what exactly you are buying the site for and be prepared to spend some money fixing or improving it.

All in all nor a newbie web marketer, Buy is definitely a better idea than Build for the first step.

Be a Magpie - Monetizing Twitter

Be-A-Magpie a German company has come up with a novel concept to monetize Twitter by seeding Twitter posts with paid 140 character ads mixed in with their posts. A novel idea (wonder why Twitter themselves did nto come up with this!) but will this mark the beginning of the end of Twitter? Folks like Twitter because it is one-to-one communications between humans, would a bot seeding conversations be hated by the Twitterers? Only time will tell but my initial reaction of using the site was very positive. Twitter-like clean interface, easy to understand concept and easy to place ads or accept ads into ones Twitter feeds.

Some things that are missing are: geo targeted advertising, payments accepted in Euros not dollars, detailed ad spend reporting.
