Monday ride 3:05pm from Springs

At our coffee stop at Lix last Monday it was agreed by all 11 at the table that the start time for our Monday afternoon ride should change to a 3:05pm start from the Springs and 5 minutes earlier (3:00pm) at Point Lonsdale shops.

This timing takes account of the end of Daylight Savings this coming Sunday, April 6th. Remember to put your clocks BACK one hour.

Monday ride 3:45pm from Springs

At our coffee stop at Lix this afternoon it was agreed by all 12 at the table that the start time for our Monday afternoon ride should change to a 3:45pm start from the Springs and 5 minutes earlier (3:40pm) at Point Lonsdale shops.

This timing fits in with Lix current closing time of 5pm and allows us to have a coffee and chat without being chased out by Ann and Rob.

Monday ride starts THREE PM for now..

Summer is upon us YET AGAAAAIN (tsk!) so we could almost leave and return a little later - however we would then arrive slightly too late at Lix for chat.

Therefore our ride on Monday still starts at 3:00pm and returns 4:30 - 5:00pm, until further notice. This is reflected in the list of regular rides.

Beware The Dark - Monday ride 3pm

There were thirteen pedalpushers at coffee on Monday.

It was agreed that as Daylight Savings finished, the start time of the Monday afternoon ride should move back to 3pm. If left at 4pm some riders may soon be riding home in the dark.

Summer is upon us again, so we can leave and return a little later.

Our ride on Monday now starts at 4:00pm and returns 5:30 - 6:00pm.

Monday ride to 3pm for Winter

Most of the regular riders felt it was now getting too dark and cold for the 4pm start, which had been finishing 5:30 - 6:00pm depending on the talk over coffee at Lix!

They've agreed that 3:00pm would be a much better start time over winter, to finish 4:30 - 5:00pm with lots of daylight around.

The new 3pm start-time is now reflected in the list of regular rides.

Training rides to prepare for M.S. ride

There are two tracks for the M.S. ride on MARCH 25 this year. One is 25 Km the other is 50 Km.

Phil & I have mapped out what we think will be a satisfactory list of training rides. All are weather permitting, attendance is not compulsory but it would be good if you intend to do the 50 Km ride to try & attend each week.

If any one would like a weekday ride and would like some company, please let me know & I will send an e-mail.

March 11 10 am (note time) Meet at Buninyong Pub and ride into Ballarat, around Lake Wendouree and back to Buninyong ( mostly bike trails)

March 19 9 am Meet at ferry terminal for a ride to Pt Nepean (Holiday traffic finished)

April 1 8 am Meet at cnr F & M rds ride to Swan bay ride & Q Cliffe

As we have just moved to Daylight Saving a few regulars on the Monday afternoon rides thought it would be a good idea to move the ride start time back to 4pm.

As of Monday 3rd October, the start time will be 4pm from the Point Lonsdale shops and 5 minutes later from the Springs carpark.

Hope you are all well and it would be good to see you sometime for a ride and a chat over coffee.

BUG Meeting on Thursday 6 October

All Cyclists

I am calling a meeting for Thursday 6th October 2011 with the aim of forming the Point Lonsdale/Queenscliff Bicycle User Group. The mission of the Bicycle User Group (BUG) is
"To provide a group interested in the welfare of bicycle users to liaise with Governments and Councils in development, repair and maintenance of bicycle paths, rail trails, and roadside bicycle lanes and any other matter concerning the usage of bicycles."
(My words in the Action Plan I have formulated.)

The Action Plan is in its infancy and my idea is that a BUG will be formed to develop the plan further for the benefit of initially Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff but ultimately the whole of the Bellarine.

If you are interested in being a part of the BUG, and also would like a copy of the Action Plan, please let me know.

Lonnie Legends in the Press

Who are the Lonnie Legends we keep reading about? A group of fun loving, local bike riders all a little over 20 years in age, who ride together regularly and are now focused fundraisers for the charity the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Every year the M.S. Society organizes a Summer Cycle around the streets of Melbourne and over the West Gate Bridge and draws thousands of people in teams and individuals. The Lonnie Legends is one of the teams that participates. To meet their fund raising goal for the event this year they have decided to organize 'The Great Art Exhibition' at the Uniting Church Queenscliff, on Friday 28th January, Noon to 8.00pm and Saturday 29th 10.00pm to 5.00pm

Luckily for the team, two of their riders are artists and Lindsay Womersley has donated a beautiful painting of Swan Bay valued at $1000 for the first prize in the raffle. Lindsay is a well known award winning artist who exhibits all around Australia, and has just completed the Amy Gillett ride.

$2 raffle tickets can be purchased outside the shops in Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff, or the local markets. The raffle will be drawn at the conclusion of the exhibition.

The team has been overwhelmed by the generosity and the kindness of the community, Barwon Water, Bacchanalia Wines, Lighthouse Olive Oil and the Uniting Church Queenscliff, and wishes to thank them for their support .

The Lonnie Legends would love your support by attending The Great Art Exhibition, and helping them to reach their fund raising goal for MS.

This report from regular rider Ray, after the Monday ride:

Graham, Bev, David and I rode to Q today, had a coffee at LIX. Just as we finished, two News Helicopters (Ch 7 and 9) kept flying around. Graham cottoned on first – then we all rode out to the ferry gate to see the raised Charter Boat being brought into the Harbour lashed to the side of another boat.

This was the boat which hit a rock yesterday and sank with the loss of a life. We also came across a fixed TV camera filming an interview with the chap who was in charge of the boat and who saved the life of one of the passengers.

Changed time for Monday afternoon ride

From Monday 1 November 2010, this ride's start-time is changing.

Naturally we take advantage of the longer evenings and daylight saving, but we also arrive in Queenscliff while some cafes are still bustling. The ride now starts at 4:30pm each Monday evening.

I've also shown this update on the website's Regular Rides list.

PS. Just a reminder.. please don't depart earlier than the scheduled time:
* from the footpath opposite IGA: at the scheduled time
* from Springs carpark: five minutes past

Great ride last Monday arvo

Last Monday afternoon's ride at the revised time of 3:05 pm was great.

Nine riders gathered at the Springs and had a nice sunny pedal into Queenscliff where coffee was had at Lix Cafe at the harbour. I have attached two photos.

The first is of the group enjoying the sunshine and the coffee with plenty of chat.

Riders in the photo are: Julian, Virginia, Wendy, Lindsay, Donna, Barry, Helen and Genny. Ewan was busy taking the photo.

The second is the row of bikes waiting patiently for their owners to return.

Try earlier time for Monday afternoon?

From our regular rider Ewan..

Hi all, particularly Monday afternoon riders,

I have been doing some rides with Lindsay over the last few months and as the days get darker earlier we thought it would be a good idea to start the Monday afternoon ride at 3pm rather than 4pm. This will allow us to do the ride, have a coffee and a chat in Queenscliff and then ride home while it is still reasonably light and not so cold.

I will see if Gavin can put some info into the Pedal Pushers web site as to what dates this arrangement may take if there is interest within the group. We thought maybe it could run for the deepest darkest weeks of winter.

At the moment, Lindsay, Genny, Donna and I are intending to ride this Monday afternoon at 3:05pm from the Springs.

Let us know if you have any other ideas or comments.

Still warm and sunny??

Not so warm, not so sunny: this week brought a run of cool and drizzly days, so our group of Friday morning cyclists had unpacked the winter gear again. It was fine weather to be outside, if dressed sensibly.

We saw some tremendous waves, and evidence of where they've been surging in recent days. For instance, here's a snap from the seawall near Point Lonsdale shops. Click to see the foamy bits.

Our regular cyclists have been enjoying the Autumn warmth, with plenty of sunshine still flooding into the bay. This week featured a lot of low tides, so the views were fabulous from opposite the IGA.

New time for Monday Night ride

Yep, it's that time of year again. Since we're adjusting our clocks this weekend, we must also tweak our schedule to ensure the Monday Night ride is finished before dark.

From next Monday 5 April, the ride will begin an hour earlier - departing from opposite the IGA at 4:00pm. Or five minutes later at Springs Beach, or thirty minutes earlier at the Queenscliff Inn, of course.

This updated time is also shown in the website's list of regular rides.

Are these the shapes for bike racks?

When passing Queenscliff Harbour today, we spotted these four bike racks at the Ferry end - near the tower and ice creamery.

These racks seem shaped exactly like some of those which the Borough of Queenscliffe has proposed for locations in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.

Sadly I was unable to cycle yesterday, due to arrival of rainfall at exactly the wrong moment. If I wasn't so feeble, I might've enjoyed dramatic cloudy scenes like these.

Probus ride from Skipton to Ballarat

See below - one of our frequent Pedal Pushers is also a Probus member, and is organising a Probus ride on Saturday 17 April.

I am organizing a Probus bike ride from Skipton to Ballarat (53Km) with a stop along the way, for morning tea, on Saturday April 17th. We have 9 starters but need over 12. If any of the Queenspoint riders would like to take part they could contact me A.S.A.P so I can confirm our booking.

We need to be in Ballarat by 9 a.m. then are transported to Skipton and then ride back to Ballarat. The cost is $25 per person for transport to Skipton.
