In 1997, Ben-Hur was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (also known as Oswald the Rabbit, Oswald Rabbit, and Ozzie) is an animated cartoon character created in 1927 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures. He starred in several animated short films released to theaters from 1927 to 1938. Twenty-seven animated Oswald shorts were produced at the Walt Disney Studio.

After Universal took control of Oswald’s character in 1928, Disney created a new character similar in appearance to Oswald as a replacement: Mickey Mouse, who went on to become one of the most famous cartoon characters in the world.

The Arizona Kid is a 1930 American pre-Code Western film directed by Alfred Santell. It was produced by Fox Film Corporation.

The original idea was for the film to be a sequel to In Old Arizona (1928), in which Warner Baxter played the Cisco Kid, a character from O. Henry’s 1907 short story The Caballero’s Way. His performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. However, the studio discovered that the rights they had acquired allowed for only a single direct adaptation of the story, which had already been used for the 1928 film. To get around this limitation, Fox released The Arizona Kid, with Baxter playing Chico Cabrillo, a variation of the same archetype, presented as “The Arizona Kid”. The following year, the studio returned to the original character with The Cisco Kid (1931), once again starring Baxter alongside Conchita Montenegro and Edmund Lowe.

The film was produced by the Pat Sullivan Studio of New York City, owned by Australian animator Pat Sullivan. It is a matter of dispute whether to attribute the film and Felix’s creation to Sullivan himself, or to Otto Messmer, the studio’s lead animator. Messmer’s claim to have been the sole creator of Felix has parallels in animation history. Ub Iwerks claimed that he created Mickey Mouse, instead of studio owner Walt Disney. Grim Natwick claimed that he created Betty Boop, instead of studio owner Max Fleischer.

Plot:

When that fails, the pair track down Phineas’s estranged wife Hettie, who Betty hasn’t seen since childhood. Seven Years Bad Luck is a 1921 American comedy film written and directed by, and starring Max Linder. A man about to be married becomes fearful of bad luck when he breaks a mirror.

Plot:
Max Linder returns home drunk after his bachelor party. The next morning, he is awakened by a loud noise. His valet John, while chasing his pretty maid, has broken his mirror. John claims Mary, the maid, dropped a napkin. By the time Max drags himself out of bed, Mary has cleared away the broken glass and John has gotten Max’s chef to dress just like their employer. Then, when Max looks into the non-existent glass, the chef mimics his every action. Max finally realizes he is being tricked, but while he is in the other room, John sneaks in a repairman to fix the mirror. Thus when Max flings something at what he thinks is an imposter, he breaks the mirror himself, much to his surprise. Now he fears he has brought seven years bad luck on himself (a well-known superstition).

Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women is a 1968 American science fiction film, one of two which were adapted from the 1962 Soviet SF film Planeta Bur (Planet of Storms) for Roger Corman. The film apparently had at least a limited American release through American-International Pictures Inc., but is best known from subsequent cable-TV showings and home-video sales.

Plot:
Astronauts landing on Venus kill a creature that resembles a pterosaur and is worshiped by the local women. The women try to kill the astronauts by means of their superhuman powers, but fail. Eventually, the astronauts escape from the planet, and their robot, damaged by a volcanic fire, becomes the women’s new god.

Private Snafu undertakes a clandestine operation in Axis Japan.

Private Snafu is the title character of a series of black-and-white American instructional adult animated shorts, ironic and humorous in tone, that were produced between 1943 and 1945 during World War II. The films were designed to instruct service personnel about security, proper sanitation habits, booby traps and other military subjects, and to improve troop morale. Primarily, they demonstrate the negative consequences of doing things wrong. The main character’s name is a play on the military slang acronym SNAFU, “Situation Normal: All Fucked Up”. (The cleaned-up version of that phrase, usually used on radio and in print, was “Situation Normal: All Fouled Up”.)

Our Hospitality is a 1923 silent comedy film directed by and starring Buster Keaton. Released by Metro Pictures Corporation, the film uses slapstick and situational comedy to tell the story of Willie McKay, who gets caught in the middle of the infamous “Canfield”–”McKay” feud, an obvious satire of the real-life Hatfield–McCoy feud.

It was a groundbreaking work for the comedy film genre, as Keaton included “careful integration of gags into a dramatically coherent storyline”, “meticulous attention to period detail” and “beautiful cinematography and extensive location shooting”. This was a contrast to the usual slapstick comedies of this era. Turner Classic Movies describes Our Hospitality as a “silent film for which no apologies need be made to modern viewers” and Roger Ebert considered it Keaton’s first masterpiece.

The Balloonatic is a 1923 American short comedy film co-directed by and starring Buster Keaton. It was one of Keaton’s final short films.

Plot:
A young man (Keaton) has a series of encounters in an amusement area, much like Coney Island, until happening upon a group of men preparing a hot air balloon for launch. The young man assists the group by climbing atop the balloon to affix a pennant, when the balloon mistakenly takes flight with no one aboard but the young man. The young man finally downs the balloon in a wilderness area, where he encounters a young outdoorswoman and proceeds to have a series of misadventures.

The Beverly Hillbillies is an American situation comedy television series broadcast on CBS from 1962 to 1971. The show had an ensemble cast featuring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer Jr. as the Clampetts, a poor backwoods family from the Ozarks region who move to posh Beverly Hills, California after striking oil on their land. The show was produced by Filmways and was created by writer Paul Henning. It was followed by two other Henning-inspired “country cousin” series on CBS: Petticoat Junction and its spin-off Green Acres, which reversed the rags-to-riches, country-to-city model of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Yet another Drysdale attempt to “reform” the Clampetts goes awry when he tries to loan his servants to the hard-working family.

The Shock is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by Lambert Hillyer and starring Lon Chaney as a cripple named Wilse Dilling. The film was based on a story by William Dudley Pelley. This is one of the rare Lon Chaney films where he gets the girl.

Plot:
In 1906, Wilse Dilling (Lon Chaney), a crippled gangster living like a brute in the savage streets of Chinatown, receives a coded message to go to the home of his boss, Ann Cardington (Christine Mayo), known as Queen Anne, a powerful crime boss feared in the underworld. When Wilse meets with her, she sends him to the town of Fallbrook, where he is to await her instructions in dealing with a former lover of hers, a banker named Micha Hadley (William Welsh), who had betrayed her. Dilling is to pose as a telegraph operator in his effort to watch the banker.
