Three Philadelphia sports legends — Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, basketball coach Speedy Morris, and retired basketball referee Hank Nichols — will receive Special Achievement Awards at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 109th annual Sports Awards Dinner on Monday, January 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Route 70 in Cherry Hill.

Rollins, a three-time National League All-Star and four-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner, will be acknowledged for his many contributions to the Phillies over his 13- year career. His greatest season came in 2007 when he was the NL and Phillies’ Most Valuable Player, won the Silver Slugger award, and became the first major leaguer to have 200 hits, 15 triples, 25 homers, and 25 stolen bases in the same season. He has led the league in triples three times and runs, and stolen bases once each.

Rollins was recently selected as the only member of the Phillies to represent Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, which begins on March 2. He will join former Phillies shortstop and manager Larry Bowa (the PSWA’s Living Legend at this year’s dinner), who has been named a coach of Team USA by manager Joe Torre.

Morris, who was nominated for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last November, will be honored for recently achieving 900 wins as the longtime coach at La Salle University and St. Joseph’s Prep.

Nichols, one of the most respected basketball referees in history, will be recognized for his induction into the Naismith Hall of Fame last September. The only referee to officiate at an NCAA and NIT championship game in the same year, Nichols was the referee in six NCAA national championship games, 10 NCAA Final Fours, and two Olympics.

Also being honored will be Navy freshman quarterback Keenan Reynolds as the Most Valuable Player of the Army-Navy game in December. He scored the winning touchdown on an eight-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive in the closing minutes.

The dinner is open to the public, and tickets, $95, can be purchased by CLICKING HERE.

Philly boxer Danny Garcia will take off his gloves and pick up a trophy later this month. Garcia has been named the Philadelphia Pro Athlete of the Year and will accept the honor at the Philadelphia Sports-Writers Association’s 109th annual Sports Awards Dinner on Monday, January 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Route 70 in Cherry Hill.

Garcia won all three of his 2012 bouts, starting with a unanimous decision over Erik Morales to take the vacant WBC championship, then stopping WBA champ Amir Khan in the fourth round of their unification bout. For good measure, he knocked out Morales in a rematch several months later. Garcia’s career record is an impressive 25-0 with 16 knockouts, and he will defend his titles against Zab Judah this February.

Other prestigious awardees announced earlier include Los Angeles Angels centerfielder Mike Trout (Pro Athlete of the Year), Phillies pitching ace Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi (Humanitarians of the Year), the 2012 U.S. Women’s Olympic Gold Medal-winning soccer team (Team of the Year to be represented by Carli Lloyd), former Phillies shortstop and manager Larry Bowa (Living Legend) and Eagles offensive lineman Todd Herremans (Good Guy Award).

University of Delaware basketball star Elena Della Donne has previously been named the PSWA’s Outstanding Amateur Athlete. She will be honored along with Ed Snider, chairman of the Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor, who will receive a lifetime achievement award for his humanitarian work. Retired Philadelphia 76ers forward Bobby Jones will accept a special award commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1983 NBA champions, and former Phillies pitcher Tommy Greene will accept a similar award commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 1993 National League champions.

The most coveted award—Most Courageous—is kept secret until the night of the dinner, the oldest continuing sports awards banquet in the nation.

Doors to the banquet open at 5 P.M. with the dinner starting promptly at 6:30.

Two of Philadelphia’s most popular athletes — Eagles offensive lineman Todd Herremans and former Phillies pitcher Tommy Greene — will be honored at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 109th annual Sports Awards Dinner on Monday, January 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Route 70 in Cherry Hill.

Herremans, a versatile and dependable force on the Eagles’ offensive line for the past eight years, will receive the Association’s Good Guy award. Greene will be honored as the representative of the 1993 Phillies National League champions.

Herremans successfully adjusted to right tackle in 2011 after five seasons of solid play at left guard for the Eagles. A 4th-round draft choice out of Saginaw Valley State in 2005, he has consistently been one of the most accessible and cooperative local athletes with the Philadelphia media.

He sustained right foot and ankle injuries in his 100th career start last season against the New Orleans Saints and was sidelined after eight games.

Greene, who pitched for the Phillies for six seasons, had his best year in 1993 when his 16-4 won-lost record tied with Curt Shilling for most wins on the team. He also started Game 4 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 1991, Greene became the first visiting pitcher in Montreal’s history to throw a no-hitter against the Expos in a 2-0 win.

Other prestigious awardees announced earlier include Los Angeles Angels centerfielder Mike Trout (Pro Athlete of the Year), Phillies pitching ace Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi (Humanitarians of the Year), the 2012 U.S. Women’s Olympic Gold Medal-winning soccer team (Team of the Year, to be represented by Carli Lloyd), and former Phillies shortstop and manager Larry Bowa (Living Legend).

The 2012 United States Women’s National soccer team, which captured the Olympic gold medal in London this past summer by beating Japan 2-1, has been named the Team of the Year by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association.

Midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored both goals in the climatic final game, will accept the award at the PSWA’s 109th annual dinner, taking place January 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Route 70 in Cherry Hill. Tickets are still available – CLICK HERE to purchase.

The U.S. Women, by beating Japan, won its third straight Olympic gold, and fought its way to the championship game with a comeback victory over France and a narrow win over Canada in a thriller. In the semifinal match against Canada, the U-S trailed three times before Alex Morgan’s header in extra time lifted the team to a 4-3 victory.

The London Olympics marked the first time the U.S. Women’s National Team won every game en route to the gold medal and set an Olympic women’s team record of 16 goals scored. The gold medal game was seen by over 80,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium, an Olympic record for women’s soccer and the largest crowd the team has played in front of outside of the United States.

Carli Lloyd, a Delran native, will be joined by a distinguished group of honorees, including Phillies great Larry Bowa (Living Legend); Sixers legend Bobby Jones (accepting a special achievement award honoring the 1983 NBA Champion 76ers); AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout (Pro Athlete of the Year); Phillies ace Cole Hamels and wife Heidi (Humanitarian of the Year); University of Delaware basketball star Elena Della Donne (Outstanding Amateur Athlete) and Ed Snider, chairman of the Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor, who will receive a lifetime achievement award for his humanitarian work.

Two beloved Philadelphia sports legends have been added to the roster for the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 109th annual dinner on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.

PSWA President Ron Corbin has announced that former Phillies shortstop and manager Larry Bowa will receive this year’s Living Legend Award, while retired Sixers forward Bobby Jones will accept a special award commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1983 NBA champion Philadelphia 76ers.

The dinner will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, NJ. The annual banquet is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased online by CLICKING HERE.

Bowa played 12 years with the Phillies, from 1970 to 1981. He played with a passion that made him a Philadelphia fan favorite. Bowa played in five All-Star games and won two Gold Gloves.

The fiery Bowa led the National League in fielding percentage six times, and was an important member of the Phils’ 1980 World Championship squad. He later managed the Phillies from 2001 to 2004, winning Manager of the Year honors in 2001.

Jones was a key member of the 76ers’ 1982-83 NBA championship team, coming off the bench to pair with Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Moses Malone. The team enjoyed a 65-win regular season and romped through the playoffs with a 12-1 record, including a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals.

Jones won the NBA’s first-ever Sixth Man Award in 1983. Malone added Most Valuable Player awards the same year for both the regular season and the finals, and Erving enjoyed All-Star Game MVP honors.

In a distinguished career, Bobby also compiled eight straight NBA All-Defensive First Team selections, four NBA All-Star selections, the 1983 NBA Championship and an Olympic Silver Medal. His number, 24, hangs from the rafters at the Wells Fargo Center.

Bowa and Jones join an amazing array of talent at this year’s dinner, including American League Rookie of the Year Mike Trout (Pro Athlete of the Year); Phillies ace Cole Hamels (Humanitarian of the Year); University of Delaware basketball star Elena Della Donne (Outstanding Amateur Athlete) and Ed Snider, chairman of the Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor, who will receive a lifetime achievement award for his humanitarian work.

Other prestigious awards at the dinner, including Team of the Year, Native Son, and Good Guy Athlete, will be announced in coming weeks, as will a couple of memorable surprise presentations and “Special Achievement” awards.

The most coveted award — Most Courageous Athlete — is kept secret until the night of the dinner, the oldest continuing sports awards banquet in the nation.
