First of all, you should consider adjusting the numerical value of history states you have enabled. We have all been there with Photoshop; you make a mistake and have to hit the undo button a million times, only to find that you just can’t go back far enough. You can fix this by going into Edit – Preferences – Performance and checking out the number of history states. You can edit the number up to 1,000 history states if you like, but this is not advisable if you are working on 2gb of ram or less. This option will absolutely terrorize your ram.

Cache levels is another thing you are going to want to look at. These settings can be found right underneath the history state settings. Basically, the cache levels control how fast an image will reappear after changes have been made to the image.

You can increase the cache levels up to 8, which will obviously increase the rendering speed. This is highly advisable whenever you are working with some high resolution images. However, you should be working on at least 2gb of ram before increasing the cache levels up to 8. The speed performance you will receive will make up for memory loss. However, if you don’t have 2gb of ram, you may want to decrease the cache levels.

Next, you will want to check out how much memory you allow Photoshop to take advantage of. Photoshop will give you suggestions on how much ram should be allocated to the program, but you can make adjustments to it, if you like. If you have a low amount of ram installed on your computer or you are going to dedicate most of your computer to Photoshop while you have it open, you may want to give Photoshop 75-80% of your ram. However, if you are a multi-tasker and want to have other things open such as mail, web browser, messengers, etc… You may want to give Photoshop only 50% of your ram.

At the base of your image window, you will be able to see the efficiency of Photoshop. That way, you always know how well the program is performing. If the value is not at the 100% mark, you may want to allocate more ram to Photoshop in order for the program to perform faster. Also, you should consider closing applications on your computer that you are not using and closing out images that you are not currently working on. That way, Photoshop will perform much faster.
