The Birth of KILUS Foundation

August of 1997 > then Barangay Chairman Alejandro E. Santiago, a man with a very strong political will encouraged his wife Editha C. Santiago to organize a volunteer group of women mostly housewives called “Samahan ng mga Kababaihan ng Ugong” SKU as partners for the Clean and Green project of the Barangay Council.

November 19, 1998 - the SKU adapt and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission a new name “KILUS” composed of more than five hundred (500) strong women force.

In every zone, one coordinator and one deputy coordinator is assigned together with ten (10) “Zone” leaders, to monitor and lead in the cleanliness of their respective areas.

This partnership got positive result when at the end of December 1999, Ugong was awarded first place as the Cleanest and Greenest Barangay in Pasig City.

Through the collective efforts of this women organization, Ugong maintained its title as the Cleanest and Greenest barangay in Pasig until at present.

In February 19, 1999, KILUS launched its pet project “BAWAS BASURA DAGDAG KITA” (BBDK). At the end of the year, December 1999, Ugong earned the title of “The Cleanest and Greenest Barangay along Pasig, Marikina and San Juan River” sponsored by the clean and green foundation of Mrs. Ming Ramos. Barangay Ugong was awarded one million pesos (P1, 000,000.00) for this title.

“KILUS” then focus on livelihood projects for its members. The search for livelihood opportunities from garbage started. The Ugong Barangay Council together with KILUS campaigned every purok household to segregate and sell their recyclables to KILUS. UBC, provided for push carts, weighing scale for buying the household scraps and all recyclable items in the community. They helped in the set up of an Ecology Center in the Barangay Hall Compound.

KILUS members shared whatever amount they can afford as starting capital. KILUS buyers wear color-coded uniforms and proper identification card. Color of the uniforms depend on the purok assigned to them with an allowance of Php 75.00 per collector/buyer for Ugong Proper and Php 100.00 for Valle Verde. However, BBDK is limited to a very few members of KILUS and still many more are in need of additional income.

In continuing search for livelihood opportunities, a seminar was held at DAP (Development Academy of the Philippines) at Tagaytay City, the budget taken out of the Php 1M allocation award money by the Clean and Green Foundation. Noted speaker Dr. Meliora of Zero Kalat sa Kaunlaran (ZKK) should useful items and one that attracted our attention is a tiny doy pack bag from discarded zesto juice. Barangay Chairman Santiago pursued for the development of different style of products from doy packs through his livelihood staff. Chairman Andy became the model and promoter of the product wearing and bringing said products to his peers in the environmental circle. This product of Ugong attracted media attention and was featured in newspapers and TV shows. Thus, when buyers kept coming in – the Barangay turnover the technology and commercial scale production to KILUS.

In 2001 KILUS branched into a Multipurpose Environmental Cooperative group duly registered with the Cooperative Development Authority. The much needed big break came when DTI-Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), Special Projects Chief Vivian Castillon exposed the product in the Manila F.A.M.E. International Trade Show. With all these, the doy pack products found a significant foreign market from Japan, USA, Denmark, etc. contributing a little to our economy.

The Profitability of the KILUS doy packs venture for the environment and for the members.

Today, KILUS is a beneficiary of TESDA who lent tools and equipment, a Php 200,000.00 loan granted by Mayor Soledad C. Eusebio’s Cooperative Assistance Project, Pasig City and another Php 200,000.00 loan from Senator Rodolfo Biazon. These loans were used to purchase additional high speed sewing machine and 80 families being helped by the production of doy packs. It has become sort of an extended family enterprise. The members has its own assignment: the pulot brigade which circles around Pasig City and other cities in Metro Manila buying the doy packs from funeral homes, cemeteries, schools, residential houses, wakes, dumpsites and whoever calls up with their doy packs. The linis brigade are those who wash and sanitized the doy packs in 3 stages and dry them. The mananahi or sewers brigade are those who earned the most from Php 2,000.00 to Php 3,000.00 a week. With school days around, the financial burden of their children are solved.

With more than a million pieces of discarded doy packs bought and still needed to transform them into bags we save mother earth from these wastes going to our drainage systems dumpsites and water bodies.

Classic Style
This is the first and the original style ever made by Kilus that brought the success. By sewing the different doypacks altogether to form different styles of bags. From the basic small size wallet to shopping bags, to beach bags, curtains, placemats, trash bags and even footwears.

Classic Strips
From the back side of the doypack roll comes the folded strips. Sewn together to form a different and more elegant design. Because the other side of the doypack is silver in color, this made our products more saleable.

Classic Boxes and Frames
Doypack rolls are pasted in a customized-sized board that made these beautiful boxes extra ordinary. Designs can be in plain doypacks, in strips, even weave. Same with the frames that comes in different sizes also.

Woven Designs
The folded strips are then used to weave different styles of bags, placemat, coasters, belt, keyrings, pencil holders and a lot more to mention. The idea of weaving the strips brought Kilus again big sales to clients.

Rice Sacks
After continous research in different recyclable materials, here came up another raw material that can be used to make bags and other products. The used rice sacks.

What makes Mt. Apo Civet Coffee taste heavenly?

First, it is the crossed variety between Arabica Coffee and Robusta named "Katimor". It is grown at 1,500 meters above sea level in the very rich volcanic soil of the Phlippine's highest mountain and that is Mt. Apo in Mindanao, where Mt. Apo is located in the center of the coffee belt with the same latitude at Ethiopia. The parchment excrement of civet coffee is let to ferment for a week before it wash, dried and roasted to give time the enzyme to penetrate the parchment. Thus the combination factor crreate a heavely coffee which is smooth and chocolatey taste.

Civet Coffee

Civet coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world. Its made from coffee berries that have been eaten and passed through the digestive tract of the asian palm civet cat. When in the cats stomach. proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans making shorter peptides and more free amino acids. After the beans are roasted the beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness than regular coffee. Civet coffee is produced in Indonesia and the Philippines.

The origin of Kopi Luwak is closely connected with the history of Coffee production in Indonesia. In early 18th century The Dutch established the cash-crop plantations in their colony in the Dutch East Indies islands of Java and Sumatra, including Arabica coffee.The Dutch prohibited the native farmers and native plantation workers to pick coffee fruits for their own use. Yet the native farmers desired to have a taste of the famed coffee. Soon the natives learned that the Asian Palm Civet Cat consumed these coffee fruits, yet they left the coffee seeds undigested in their droppings. The natives collect these dropping coffee seeds; clean, roast and grind it to make coffee. The fame of aromatic civet coffee spread from locals to Dutch plantation owners and became a great discovery producing the most delicious coffee in the world.

This coffee comes from beans that are organically grown at elevation exceeding 1500 meters above sea level. Initially started as a company that manufactures garments for babies in 1989 – doing orders mainly for Australia, Europe and the United States of America until 1995, Kardelle Industries, Inc. shifted into a company that designs and manufactures Christmas ornaments in order to survive the time when the garments exportation industry in the Philippines began to go on a downswing.

Since the reception for the ornaments was good, expansion of products was inevitable. It added Christmas trees and other decors to its product line and moved on to produce an all-season collection for the home using all natural materials as embellishments. It was such a hit – mostly in the United States of America. From humble beginnings as a home-based business, the products manufactured then were baskets mostly of rattan and wicker. As the company gained more experience over time, the product line expanded into home decoration and home storage baskets making use of a variety of organic renewable materials. Our baskets are delicately handcrafted by the fine hands of Filipino craftsmen.

In 1994, the company finally decided to export directly and started sending its handmade products to the Americas, Europe, and all over Asia.

Today, the company is now known as a reliable source of houseware baskets especially for the kitchen and for storage baskets. All our products are still handmade using various natural materials including abaca, buri, hyacinth, wicker, among others. We are known for producing affordable Houseware, Caddies, Storage, Hampers and prepack assortments .

The company, due to popular demand, has also started serving the local market with its growing taste for high-quality, handmade baskets. We sell to both institutional customers and directly to consumers through various retail events. Please see our "News" page for more details.

Established in July 23, 1987, Craft Mill, Inc. is a multi-awarded, Filipino-owned manufacturing firm that takes pride in its environment-friendly creations, its clean, consistent workmanship, & its distinct style that has managed to stay abreast of trends, while still retaining the original character that sets Craft Mill apart from other handicraft producers & exporters also using paper, fabric, leather & natural materials that are indigenous to the Philippines.

It's entirely made of a variety of reused woods. The dark colored part is Philippine mahogany, the light colored part is spruce. All reused thereby no new trees were harmed.

A small business that started in the early 70's producing guitars for retailers in Manila. In the early 90's it opened its own store named J.R. Guitars. The small store gave way to a bigger retail outlet in 2006 and was renamed Little Indians' Camp.
