Online art gallery revised

The art gallery area of the Al Young Studios web site now takes visitors directly to images available in the collection.

For many years, artworks have been presented by artist, by subject category, or by media. These categories can still be used to sort the collection, but site visitors now go first to the images and then to the forms in which an image is available. A detail page for each image presents the original and the prints in which each image can be purchased.

The online Product Catalog remains unchanged.

The collection currently consists of 152 images created originally as 65 oil paintings, 75 lithographs, 10 computer-generated illustrations (CGIs), and 2 block prints. In addition to the media in which the images were created (which might loosely be termed the "originals"), the Al Young Studios currently offers 101 open-edition print versions of selected images.

New Painting: One By One - The Messiah completed by Al R. Young

One By One - The Messiah by Al R. Young features the blessing of the children during the ancient American ministry of the resurrected Messiah. It is the eighth painting completed in the Heroes of the Book of Mormon series, and sells for $10,000 (unframed).

The Storybook Home blog is for the community of interest in The Storybook Home Journal™: "There's so much that goes into a storybook life, and so many photos, recipes, ideas, and tips that never make it into the pages of The Storybook Home Journal™, that we decided a blog would be the perfect medium to fill in the blanks for our subscribers, and anyone else interested in 'stepping into the story.'"

Al Young Studios made available several new prints for the Women in Scripture Series today. The new additions are of Choose You This Day (Puah), And He Shall Direct Thy Paths (Lois), and The Trial of Faith (Ruth and Orpah).

The 11 in. x 17 in. prints sell for $25 USD; the 8 in. x 10 in. prints sell for $14 USD; and the 5 in. x 7 in. prints sell for $7 USD.

First internet-based collection of World War II Shortwave Radio-message Relays published

Al Young Studios today added facsimiles of 145 documents to its online archive of original historical sources pertaining to My Father's Captivity.

The addition presents the complete collection of cards, letters, and other documents focused on POW shortwave radio broadcasts from Alfred R. Young in 1943 and 1944.

During World War II, some shortwave radio listeners tuned in to broadcasts of messages from prisoners of war, and reported messages to families of the prisoners by sending notes, transcriptions, or recordings. Letters in this collection originated with 123 listeners, 136 of which resided in the United States. Other locations of origin include Canada, India, and South Africa.

The presentation of the documents includes 532 facsimiles, and brings the total number of documents in the online collection to 298.

My Father's Captivity cover unveiled

My Father's Captivity goes to press

My Father's Captivity is currently in press for its June 15th release date. Thoroughly reviewed and presented in a new page format, the book now features 139 photographs throughout its 320 pages.

"It's impossible to touch a manuscript without changing something," said author Al Young, "and this iteration is no exception. We have taken pains to focus every aspect of the narrative on themes running from one end of the story to the other. And along the way we've groomed every aspect of the manuscript."

With the book at this stage, the focus now turns to the online archive serving as the Internet companion to the book. For example, the first major update involves 29 aerial photographs of the allied bombing of Tokyo and other areas.

Al also explained that work on the collection of correspondence from short-wave radio listeners is nearing completion, and is scheduled to follow the aerial photographs. "That collection," said Al, "includes items from 122 correspondents, and involves the uploading of 390 facsimiles."

Name index provided for online archive

Al Young Studios has added a name index to its online archive of original documents and photographs from World War II.

The online archive, launched in March 2008, is the Internet presentation of source materials collected during research and writing for My Father's Captivity, now available for purchase and scheduled for distribution next month.

"While the source materials focus primarily on the 28th Bombardment Squadron and Kawasaki Camp 2B," said author Al Young, "the site already includes more than 2,750 instances of names in various documents and photographs. An index was the only way to make the material truly accessible."

The index, according to Tanner Young, site architect and webmaster, consists of nearly 1,450 names. For any document or photograph, users can click names of people listed or shown, and view a list of all documents and photos where that name or person appears.

"Names in the index," said Al Young, "represent a conscientious effort to reconcile various renderings of names across the collection. No doubt, researches will help us refine some of the spellings."

My Father's Captivity to ship June 15th

The book's 300 pages feature a captivating narrative, more than 120 photographs, and the text of 60 original documents that tell the story in the words of those who lived it on the homefront as well as the battlefront. The volume's notes, bibliography, and index summarize more than 30 years of research and writing. New Painting by Elspeth Young - Choose You This Day

Choose You This Day, by Elspeth Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Women in the Scriptures series. It sells for $3,800.

The painting depicts the Hebrew midwife, Puah, from the book of Exodus chapter 1. Faced with choosing between fear of God and fear of man, this valiant woman chose, like the prophet, Joshua, to "serve the Lord." Her courage saved countless innocent children from slaughter and enabled the children of Israel to "wax very mighty" (Exodus 1:20). Her faithfulness was blessed by the Lord, who "made [the midwives] houses." From the Hebrew translation we learn that "houses" could indicate the building up or repairing of home, family, palace, or temple. Whatever the precise blessing conferred by the Lord upon this faithful woman, these words remind us of the blessings of eternal families, available in Holy Temples, where covenants "build up" and "repair" family ties so that they may last throughout eternity.
