Pitch: "Resume Search Engine". Having run an IT consulting & Staffing business for 3 years, it was apparently clear that we have a great pain in finding the right resume and more over, the job portals take advantage of users information and sell it as a package for $7000. None of us like to pay information over internet, at least at this stage of internet. GiGumes is an absolutely free resume search engine which has more than 10 Million pages over internet indexed and also provide a resume publishing service in a 3 simple steps for free. It allows users to signup/login using their existing social media logins like facebook, twitter, linkedin and gmail. You can post your feed back on GiGumes if you have a pain point in staffing industry which you want to kill. We are constantly working hard to enhance our search and serve our users better.

There are millions of websites over internet which offer variety of services for staffing/hiring but 99% of them are paid. The information for which the users are paying is the Open information of a person over internet, which we feel is not something for sale. We want to make staffing/hiring and getting hired dead simple for everyone.

Keep watching, as we are pushing 10 new features which allows you to leverage your complete social network to hire and get hired faster.

HealthCare Cost in US in Cents

Innovation and Technology for Govt. Solutions

Reviewing the technology and process used by Local/State Government feels like we are still in 90's. I believe applying the latest trends and innovative technology (like cloud computing, Web 2.0/3.0, etc..) to the Govt. will increase the service and performance of the country bringing a phenomenal change in the way we live our lives today.

With the new president encouraging huge budget for healthcare and technology, no wonder we will see many changes in the way the information is changed, like having the CMS and all the State Medicaid system residing on a single private cloud and sharing information and services across the network. This type of infrastructure change will allow to cut down millions of tax dollars spent on a single system rather then all the state systems. Also imagine getting twitter updates, videos, and building network connecting everyone within a system.

I am glad to see few have already taken initiatives envisioning the change I see.

Please check the new technology transition plan by obama: Change.gov

Check this video listing the game plan for change with technology by Obama:

This video shows one the initiatives:

choosing the right cloud provider

Trying to choose a cloud provider for my app this is what I came across and I believe this helps a lot to narrow down few decisions to pick.

<a title="View Cloud Computing Comparison on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/15482005/Cloud-Computing-Comparison" style="margin: 12px auto 6px; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; text-decoration: underline; display: inline ! All the sales depends on where you are located and how accessible you are to your customers. Usually downtown draws more crowd as being a traditional place of business. I was comparing the numbers of downtown individual bar sales to that of neighborhood bar sales and saw that neighborhood bars are better.

The exotic lake side bars(Oasis, carlos n charlies ..) cashin few extra points for the view. The population and density of a particular area is one of the most critical point to be considered if someone wants to run a safer game rather than experimenting on lakeside. Few bars like Sherlocks, Trudy's, CoolRiver, Z'Tejas, Chuy's, trulucks have huge sales compared to other individual bars located in downtown. Talking about campus cain & ables, hole in the wall, trudy's , spider house, crown and anchor cater to the college crowd have high sales number always.

Any neighbourhood bar within a high density area has a higher probability of success. The zip code area 78705 has the highest density in Austin which is the campus area and looking at the sales of cain and ables, the new place cuatros it does make sense.

I still have a little confusion about judging between density and population. As there are higher denser places with less population compared to other areas, it is hard to fix up on which one to pick. Nontheless, having an avg. population with good density or having avg. density with good population will always be something to consider.

Below is a chart of population and density classified as per zip code.

Chartlink

(click on the image to enlarge)

Density chart: (click on the image to enlarge)
Population chart:(click on the image to enlarge)

*Density - (people per square land mile)

You can have a look at the zip code mapping at this link: ZipcodeMapper

Here is the link to the detail statitics of Austin Demographics: Austin Demographics by Zipcode

ref: http://www.zipskinny.com/

Alcohol Sales on W 6th Street

If you are into the Austin downtown bars, you might have already heard about the buzz on the W 6th Street. I tried using Google's Blog Search but unfortunately, again there is one more thing to be optimized. I was extremely unsatisfied with the results it gave me. As , my intension was to search popular blog spaces like blogspot and wordpress (where most of users blog), rather than looking at the company blogs any other stuff. Another strong reason might be that, I always was trying to connect to the particular blogger with my search of learning or getting some information or even hire.

Here is a good link I found on technorati about blogosphere.

http://technorati.com/blogging/state-of-the-blogosphere/

Finally, I have created a custom search engine using Google CSE and for me it did work for my intended results. These new standards had made search engines to read, recognize and categorize major quantity of web. Usage of API's/XML will transform it with much higher standards for communicating with external apps.

The Auto-complete AJAX method on the current Google page and even in most of the websites gives our suggestions based on initial input.

No wonder if Google comes up with a product which uses the information of its current users and provides "Tip of the Day" based on his current email discussions.

There is a heavy research going on everywhere about how to implement Speech Recognition into the Web.

There is already a mechanism of reading and writing into twitter, Blogs, RSS Feeds and Burners which proves the read, write and execute capabilites. And not forget delicious, technorati and other web tools which has created a classification of content into Tags.

(What pities me is some websites like www.99acres.com & www.magicbricks.com do not even an RSS feeds.)

www.yoowalk.com a 3D based websites which is an one step ahead of lively by Google (currently switched off). This is an amazing application which has tried transformation the a simple chat into a great visual experienced chat with a theme to "Walk around the Web" while you chat.

www.webwars.com EVE another 3D based Online games site which (currently they have disabled, i guess planning to launch with a blast) Still you can check out more details at http://www.program-ace.com/web/success_stories/eve-web-wars/ This the most innovative idea I have ever come across in my life. The theme of the game is to conquer territory and the
territory here is website. The territory has point/value based on the current real rank of the site. The top territory is off course Google, so we the mission would be to conquer major territories, add up force and attack on the next territory till we hit the Queen.

Another segment of Web 3.0 is extensive mobile integration which is already happen seeing the flooding of IPhone apps and other mobile OS like Andriod.

I am still curious to see the most amazing venture like Google coming out of Web 3.0.

Vertical Search Engines

I always was under assumption that google is the end of search engine and there isn't any need for another search engine. Well, I was wrong. As a matter of fact, google's motto was to organize web to give the users relevant websites for their need. As users are getting more matured online, now its time for the vertical search engines to organize data of a specific domain to find the exact product rather than wandering around all the websites which google lists.

For say, typically, airlines industry went from offline agent booking, to online tickets booking, to online agents like www.orbitz.com, www.cheaptickets.com and had finally landed up on websites like www.kayak.com. Kayak is a search engine for airlines. It gather information from most of the airlines and displays in an organized fashion. User previously had to go to each website of particular airlines to get the pricing/availability to do his comparison, which later was automated by websites like www.orbitz.com by a comparison method. Later, now user had to still compare orbitz and the particular airlines as there is a additional charge in orbitz. kayak has now automated this user action giving him results from both airlines and sites like orbitz. Not to forget www.sidestep.com is another vertical search engine.

The same theory can be applied to indian airlines industry, like www.makemytrip.com, www.yatra.com and then the followon version of kayak are www.ixigo.com ww.bookingbuddy.in.

Similar to the airlines another domain which has similar transformation is Jobs and Staffing. www.indeed.com is a Job Search Engine integrated information of Jobs openings by crawling through the web. Few other websites on similar lines are www.simplyhired.com

I am excited to see how Google will now handle this situation of loosing a huge user base. No doubt in next 1 year every domain will have a specific search engine.

Can a H1B register a Business?

I have been asked the same question at least by 300 people by now and I keep telling the same stuff every time. I thought it would be a better way to blog and ask people to refer.

Here we go...

1. Can a H1B Register a Firm or Business?

Absolutely Yes! H1B by definition is on a work permit visa for an employer. He should only be working for his employer for earning his direct wage. He cannot get wages from any other source as is restricted by his status. Nonetheless, the status never has a restriction on investing in any business (other than Liquor, Tobbaco, firearms which need minor adjustments).

There is no law which says that a H1B cannot register a business. It is as simple as you invest in a stock and can get capital gains on your investments.

This gain is not your wage rather is the Return on your investment which is taxable. You can even get a dividend from your investment for which you will need to pay dividend tax. These taxes differ between 15% - 20% depending on the current Govt. policy.

Legally, you are entitled to receive any capital gain from any kind of business. So you can register a business and be a 100% share holder. A H1B be can only register a C-Corp type business as, the Sole proprietorship type will report your income as a wage.

2. Ways of retrieving money from your business?

There a numerous ways but you should never pay yourself directly which might effect your legal status. You can declare dividends and pay taxes and there are some other ways, (by the time you have reached this point you will be able to figure the rest of the ways).

3. Can H1B work for his business?

You can work and provide any kind of voluntary services to your firm but you should never be compensated for the work financially by the firm. The only way you are entitled to receive financial benefits is your dividends.

4. Why is Green card required for my business?

Truly speaking it is not required to have Green card for your business unless the type of your business needs someone to take responsibility to answer questions or show that someone is operating the firm (or even if your business is obligated to run some payroll - insider secret).

Suggestion: Do what you love to do. Choose a business which creates value and in which you never feel guilty!

ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_gains_tax_in_the_United_States

Payroll Tax basics for dummies

Basic Tax Structure:

FICA: Social Security

6.2%

6.2%

FICA: Medicare

1.45%

1.45%

Federal Income Tax (Corporate/Personal)

35% - 39%

17.4%

State Income Tax

0% - 9.5%

0% - 9.5%

Federal Unemployment (FUTA)

0.8%

NA

State Unemployment Insurance (SUI)

2.8%

NA

State Income Taxes differ as per the State. If you wanted to make a successful venture you need to find the right resources to compensate the skills you are missing.

The best investment in any firm is the human capital. A firm can raise and invest everything but cannot build intelligence by itself. It is an outcome of humans when invested in a firm can provide infinite (ά) results. I tried to define the Infinity replacing the people with “Zero”.

The core principle of the world's greatest enterprise is investing in Human Capital. This is how it started first tried to start with web development stuff trying to be a freelancing firm by hiring web developers but as the margins are too low it really didn't hit my interest and moreover it is almost unimaginable compete with the offshore pricing overseas. Then started searching private clients but being in this domain I already know that if you were a Bigger firm you would have either outsourced the 50% of the work to offshore or even have the offshore it to the local firms who has all S/W process, security, ISO certification ..and not to work the SOX and SAS70. The client have numerous options for outsourcing and can always get the best price even after going with BIG consulting firms. Then talking about mid-size firms there is little scope but again you have to compete with the pricing of offshore firms, as cost cutting for mid-size firms is a major criteria. The only thing left is Startups and as being a truth as startup would never hire a consulting firm for their IT needs and even if they need they would use the freelancers.

So the only scope left in here was, the Government contracts. There is 100% of the scope to hit the Govt. sector. Nonetheless, the process and procedures to get onto any Govt. contract is not that simple as it sounds. Off course you have your competitors hitting the same target and you need to prove yourself better having NO experience. The Govt. contract awards are based on evaluation, measuring attributes like, Yrs of experience, Current client references, Current process, over solution, current revenue. Well putting your self in to this criteria and comparing against your competitors would obvious not qualify you as a top listed vendor. So, still the question, HOW? is not answered. One good scope to get in to these contracts is being a HUB. Most of the States in US encourage HUB to participate in these bids as it is a part of the Govt. pre-defined policy. I saw many firms getting fortunate being a HUB to get into these contracts.

But you are not a HUB, THEN WHAT?

Well, the solution is as simple as that. INNOVATE.

In my preliminary investigation, I came across few firms like Perficient, SEILEVEL and some other list firms which are very unique in their process and delivery model. SEILEVEL has gone back to fix the basic of S/W Engineering which targets the requirements analysis which is THE MOST IMPORTANT part of the whole S/W cycle. And there are many more startups who are successful by adopting an innovative core business process to compete with the market.

There are even new set of IT services firms whose target market to provide some new web trends like social networking, social media, blogs, forums and name it you will find a firm providing that service.

Bottom line, It is never a bad idea to provide a service, but one needs to innovate to an extent where they can out perform their competitors and the only weapon is INNOVATION.

Desi-Ishtyle Business - Is this Right for me or Not??

Please pardon me if you feel like I am criticizing my own ethnicity.

The majority of Indian Immigrants in US were always going by the first thought of business. Some of them are Consulting firm (to be clear H1 IT Staffing firm), Gas station, Groceries, Indian Restaurant, Insurance Agency, Indian air-ticketing agency, CPA firms, Attorney firms…etc. Nonetheless, there are many Indian Immigrants who have cherished by setting up the best technology startups and also are still serving in the top organization management.

I can exclude CPA firms and Attorney firms from this category as they are bound to their actual professional rather than being little arrogant money making business with little or even no “VALUE”. I am glad to see so many Indians trying to be self-employed. Off course, it is a need of people to have these services provided by Indians as they are so customized to full fill the needs (even though it is not the right thing to do).

I would say if we always go by the first thought which is the most common, I wouldn’t think that it is entrepreneurship Ideally. Even if it the first thought, it needs to have little Value in the core concept of the business.

Anyone who is passionate or even thinking about setting up a new business. Try to answer the below questions before you start:

1. Why are you passionate about this business?

2. What is the Value proposition to your customers?

3. What is the problem that you are resolving by your solution or services?

4. How different are you from your competitors?

5. How are you the most suitable for doing this than any other person out there?

6. Do you want to do this for your life time?

7. What is the Goal of your business in next 5 yrs – 10 yrs? (Other than financial)

a. Define Mission, Vision & Goals

8. What is the scope of the business (Local, National, Global)? Does it have a $1 Billion scope?

9. What is the problem that you are resolving by your solution or services?

10. Is your concept financially feasible? Prove it?

I believe that anyone who answers the above, can do the business if they are self convinced.

US Immigration Statistics: (2007)

Total Immigrants : 37.3 million

Immigrants are 13% of US population.

Total US population: 286.92 million

India Immigrants : 1.66 million

Indian Immigrants are 0.57% of the US population.

So, the Big Question is, Do you want to do business targeting 0.57% of population or with the rest 99.43%?

My whole intension to scribble this was to make my peers realize that they could do much better, rather could be exceptional by thinking Good and doing it Right.

Ref:

US Immigrants Statistics 2007 - Upload a Document to Scribd

Austin - "Live Music Capital of the World"

Welll well wel.. There was something burning in my stomach for a long time for which I wanted to take 5 mins from my brain and write up something from the day I landed up in Austin. At last, I did it. I am writing this up so that it reminds me every time that I have to put this together and progress it faster than imagination. (yaa i know words...:)

Concept: "Live Rock 365 days" LIVEROK365.com To make Austin a 365 days live music. To keep up the theme of Live Music Capital of the world. Make every person across the world how knows the word LIVE ROCK MUSIC to spell Austin next to it.

Value Proposition: Keep the theme of Austin alive forever, generate economic value to the city & encourage music business (360 degrees) in Austin.

Economic benefits: This concept drives huge Advertising revenue to the city and gets people to spend money for Austin. How-to - 'first thoughts':

1. Get list of Best 365 Rock Bands.

2. Schedule them up for 365 days. (well we can break it into weekend 365/7, exclude national holidays, nfl, nba finals, baseball finals & UT games, ACL - Sept 26, SXSW - March 13-22, other major events in Austin).

3. Sponsorship Lead generation.

4. Event campaigns ( apply principles of narrowcasting, behavioral targeting, contextual advertising, ..so on so forth with all out advertising 3.0 techniques).

5. Tie-up with all sources of ticket selling across nation.

6. Nationwide advertising + (deals with airlines for the events to Austin) + points on credit cards for rock events.

7. Charity based live events

External revenues: Food, t-shirts, accommodation, liquor, etc..

Risk:

1. Does the city have enough money for the 365 events

2. Would we find sponsors for 365 events in a yr

The Enterprise of the Future

This a Global survey conducted by IBM over 1000 ceo's and trying to deifine the traits of "The Enterprise of Future"

Reading this article felt like someone had snacted something off my head and put it on to an article..
Map the below 5 traits to your company. Below are few of them which I felt everyone should answer once atleast every year or even twice an year.

1. What am I good @?

2. What is my passion?

3. What makes me happy?

4. What entertains me?

5. What pisses me off?

6. What bores me?

7. What is the role I want to be in?

8. Who's personality (or even mindset) matches mines?

9. How many people trust me?

10.How many people do I trust?

11.What have I done to be want I wanna be in past 5 Yrs?

Hope this helps atleast one of you.

Ultimate pursuit of happiness lies in "Doing what you love to do the most".

Is this World Real or just a speculation ?

I always wonder what reality is? Are we living in the real world or a world speculated by some complex mechanism evolved out of human intelligence.

We live in a world shown or speculated by the media. We only see facts published in the media and there are million things in this world which are never exposed by media. If media wasn’t interested in Britney spears crap or any other celebrity spicy relationships we would have never discussed about celebrities so often. On the +ve side, we get to know the few of socio-economic conditions around us only through media.

Talking to one of my journalist friend, I was so scared to listen to few truths about the politics and other hidden truths which never get released out in the media as they could do a major damage to the people’s thought process.

I had been reading about Gandhiji for long time from my child hood and all through read only good things without any mistakes ever made by him. I hardly can believe that a human could be so perfectionist without committing a single mistake in his life. The success of “Satyagraham” drive was mainly due to the media and people publishing the moment so heavily across the country. If the media and people did the same with Bhagath Singh’s “Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA)”, probably India would have got independence way before. I cannot comment anymore as I myself am not aware of complete facts.

The whole point around this was living in a world of speculation.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2008 #$%~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fear..... the one thing which I hate the most... each of us are scared of so many things around and in the current sophisticated and line driven lifestyles, we never realize rather would say, are never bothered about our fears and on how to over come them.... I always believe that doing things which you are scared of is the only way to get away with it. Thinking about this, i had a weird thought in my head, to try out some adventure for year 2008 and would probably will try to take it forward every year trying something new. So here we go.....

I wanted to go get to a remote place or far from the city I currently live in, ask my friends to take away all my cash, cards, cellphone and leave me alone with my Identity Card which says who I am. Just not to be too much adventurous (which I would luv to) i might try out my target between San Antonio, TX and Austin, TX. I really wanted to see what I would do to get from San Antonio to Austin and off course the last option is to go to a COP, but now that really is not an adventure anymore. I would rather try to do something..like.. trying to earn money within a short span of time with what I am and what I can do at that moment.

I believe there will be great lessons which learnt from this adventure. Keep waiting for my results of this adventure...

My first $10 out of Fire4Innovation initiative

Before getting to the $10, leeme talk about why I have to re-create this group with different direction. I came across 1000's of ppl who say we have to do it, we will do it, we do it like etcc... but I wanted to see ppl doing things rather than saying. Now how would a person get to the next setup of doing things from saying things. Its pretty simple, he first should be knowing exactly what he want to do and then finally put his thoughts around it and get to point where he would strongly believe this is what he always wanted to do.

The other side of the story is there are ppl like Sir richard branson who have imagineered the world with Ecstasy and always act first then speak. These ppl just do it first and then start thinking how to make it better & the best.

As we see actions are output of thoughts and if there are no thoughts then there is no point of discussion. The most important thing in a entrepreneurs life is the thought process. As I always believe in encouraging entrepreneurship, I wanted to invoke the thought process within ppl who has even a niche of entrepreneur spirit.

Yaaa...finally i said it.. "Invoking thought process". I created this group within my friends to achieve a target "To earn $10 within a week".

Here are the list of rules:

Each member has to earn $10 in a week with a creative idea, not doing anything one currently does.

The type of work being done for a week should not be repeated for the next $10 for follow-on weeks.

The proof of the earning and the idea should be proven at the end of each cycle. The best idea and productive earning will be re-payed a cash prize donated by the other members. This is a serious group with a vision to make ppl think and make ppl do things which was always pending in their life.

Future vision of this initiate: Doing this frequently will invoke a great thought process which can lead to the best process of value and wealth creation.

Lets now talk about my $10 for the first week in april.

At last, I got my $10 within a week. I guess it was not a great start but at least was a start :)

Action: I inducted my colleague about the basics of startup (types of corporations, taxations, business plan, business process overview, complications per his current work authorization and contract status, tips & tricks to get along with the taxes, list of actions for getting a firm up and running, payroll basics and some misc info).

Pending follow-on tasks: Inducting in Business Plans, preparations for BP, walking through venture cycle, importance of focus on customer, realization of target business and finally helping in defining the business.

Value: Sharing inbound experiences in startups and trying to clearup the common assumptions of startup for like mind entreprenuers.

Future outcome: As a matter of fact, there are 1 million firms getting registered in US every year and this show the potential market for creating a management consulting firm for basic entrepreneurs or any business startups.

Risk and economic viability: Startups always are short of money and are looking for any tiny thing to cut down their cost and this would contradict our theory of ppl spending money on their initial stages of starting business.

Justification of the risk: 50% of the people get their startup basics from references and discussion with ppl around them and rest of them who are kinda "do it urself" go and research books and internet to get the stuff done. But both segments of the ppl would always encourage some to professionally guide them to review what they want to do and how they want to do and gauge their vision. And some times ppl get to realise the real potential of their business which they would have never identified without talking to others.

Conclusion: A market research on startups and SMB would allow us to prove if this idea of management consulting for startup is really a viable venture.

FIRE4INNOVATION - My first offical Entreprenuer group

I officially started my entrepreneur career 2 yrs back after realizing few practical realities of implementation. Prior to this official start, I was searching for the ONE THING and had started to outline all domains where I can fit into. Then shortlisted Entertainment and IT as it has something to do me with or my experience. As a daily routine, I had to come up with at least 1 idea which I thought was little creative against the existing process and procedures. The next thing would be google on the idea and industry to find exactly where I stand in the world. As a matter of fact, initially, it was obvious for me to realize that I just woke up from the sleep when compared against the world. As, I was getting exhausted doing this exercise, I had to find a way to keep this thought process live and I saw few thing in me first. In the first place I was not a creative person and also was not a technically sound enough who can write the most weirdest algorithms, there were so many qualities which does not exist in me and so to fill this gap I just looked at the corporate world and then wanted to do the same thing ..... get the resources who has the right skill set and collective thought process is 100 times better than single mans thought process. I started a group FIRE4INNOVATION with couple of my trusted friends calling them up and lecturing, provoking 'em about entrepreneurship. The rules for the group was, each has to post a new topic of discussion and other has to post their comments against it. There was a good brainstroming session going around in the group and to keep up the spirit I injected a rule saying 'if the member of the group does not respond for a week he will be outcasted out of the group'. I had once thrown out all of the members out of the group and then got them back to re-start the discussions. One thing I realized that provoking someone for entrepreneurship will never make it happen in 90% cases but there are little chances that they could at least start on that path of the career if they of that kind.

List of things I learned out of this exercise:

Anything you do should be targeted with timeline strictly with self disciple.

Always discuss your idea with a group of ppl who can at least think, as no one here is god to know everything or even thing in every direction.

Take the +ve side of the discussion and research the -ve side. Rather than getting emotional try to find and prove that -ve point with analysis and convince the other person. With my experience this exercise will remove at least 5% of your assumption around the idea and will also get you into the idea analysis stage - or even called as MARKET RESEARCH in terms of Business Plan.

NEVER IGNORE ANY POINT OF ARGUMENT as this could cover your primary risk identification and mitigation plan.

I always kept telling ppl one thing - a difference between Business Vs Entrepreneurship. Making money with money is Business Vs Making money with value and service with a passion of creativity and innovation is Entrepreneurship . Money is one thing which entrepreneur’s are least worried about at least in the stage of nurturing their idea or framing out the plan of implementation or execution.

I will talk about the outcome of these discussions into a VENTURE in my later blog.

Game of IT Contracting

As a MOF, 70% of nri's career journey starts in the world of IT contracting. Thinking about scalability, I knew that, I would be hit on the performance of Information Retrieval. I never want to compromise on at least the IR as it directly effects the QoS to my customer. I then starting peeking into the best i know in the world for IR "Google".
