Today, we’re taking a close look at a Makita circular saw. Not just any saw, and not a typical 7-1/4″. We’re moving up to bigger and badder with the 5402NA 16-5/16″ circular saw.

What strikes you first is that this thing is huge. Compared to a normal 7-1/4″ circular saw, the blade has 4 times the surface area. It’s huge to hold on to, although it only weighs 28.7 pounds. With that size, it seems like it should be really loud. Suprisingly, it isn’t. The huge depth control lever makes for incredibly secure adjustments.

But with an 1800 watt maximum output motor and a nearly 29 pound saw, what type of stuff would you be cutting?

For starters, timbers and beams are suggested. At 90°, it can cut 6-1/4″ deep - that’s perfect for a 4×4″, 4×6″ or a 6×6″ beam. It can cut a 4×4 or 4×6 at 45°, too.

This saw is also recommended for demolition work, such as after fire or flood damage.

The 32 tooth carbide tipped blade that is included is too rough for finish work, but this isn’t a finish saw by any stretch of the imagination. You’ll be happy to find that the rip fence is also included in the box.

As always, Makita includes a 1 year warranty and ToolPartsDirect.com has the replacement parts to keep it running after the warranty is up. The Makita 5402NA is available today at ToolBarn.com.

<itunes:summary>Today, we're taking a close look at a Makita circular saw. Not just any saw, and not a typical 7-1/4". We're moving up to bigger and badder with the 5402NA 16-5/16" circular saw.

What strikes you first is that this thing is huge. Compared to a normal 7-1/4" circular saw, the blade has 4 times the surface area. It's huge to hold on to, although it only weighs 28.7 pounds. With that size, it seems like it should be really loud. Suprisingly, it isn't. The huge depth control lever makes for incredibly secure adjustments.

But with an 1800 watt maximum output motor and a nearly 29 pound saw, what type of stuff would you be cutting?

For starters, timbers and beams are suggested. At 90deg;, it can cut 6-1/4" deep - that's perfect for a 4x4", 4x6" or a 6x6" beam. It can cut a 4x4 or 4x6 at 45deg;, too.

This saw is also recommended for demolition work, such as after fire or flood damage.

The 32 tooth carbide tipped blade that is included is too rough for finish work, but this isn't a finish saw by any stretch of the imagination. You'll be happy to find that the rip fence is also included in the box.

The What’s New at ToolBarn podcast will let you know what we have for you to take a look at. We cover new products, technologies, and website features.

Welcome to the first ever “What’s new at ToolBarn” podcast. Being that this is the first one, that means this podcast is new. Actually, podcasting in general is new at ToolBarn, and we’re excited to be able to talk to our customers. We feel it should assist in keeping the most valuable people at ToolBarn - namely our customers - in the loop better as to what all is going on, exciting offers, new product lines, and ways we generally make the experience better for you. Yes, these podcasts are all about you.

Also fairly new is Sqwincher. We’ve been selling more powdered Gatorade on our website than we knew what to do with for quite some time now, so we decided to bring in Sqwincher as well. They are similar, but have a few differences. First, the formulation is especially for working, not sports. Second, they have individual sizes which you can mix with a 20 oz bottle of water. Finally, they have sugar free flavors, which is perfect for those of us watching our sugar intake. I think this is a nice addition and have been doing my part to make them feel welcome by drinking some every day.

We have some new diamond blades on our site with the ToolBarn logo listed next to them. These are generics that we feel strongly enough about the quality to put our name with them. There are also diamond core bits, diamond grinding cup wheels, and some diamond stone polishing pads. We think you’ll find the prices pretty attractive as well as the quality.

CST/Berger is a new line of lasers at ToolBarn. They’ve got some innovative products as well as the levels everyone else has, but the quality is excellent for the price.

Ingersoll Rand has been added to our lineup, and we’re in the process of bringing in stock. Soon, we’ll have many more of their products available, but we’re starting out with what we can easily stock and will be expanding our offerings over time. Many of you are probably already familiar with this great line of cordless and pneumatic tools, so more introduction shouldn’t be necessary.

One item which has been on the site a while but is still worth mentioning as a newer addition is the Ridgid SeeSnake Micro. With a flexible shaft supporting a camera head and a 2.5″ color LCD screen, it’s great for inspection behind hard to move items, under water or inside walls. It may be listed as on backorder, but I’d advise getting in line now if you’d like one.

The final item for this podcast is our Drill Selectors. We’ve embraced AJAX programming to create a drill selector to help you narrow down the choices quickly and find the drill you’re really looking for. When you get to either the cordless drill or electric drill pages on ToolBarn, you’ll have a link at the top of the page for the selector. Using the drop-down boxes, you can quickly narrow down the choices from 177 cordless and 117 electric drills.

That’s it for this time. Thanks for joining us, and check back to keep up on What’s new at ToolBarn.

Dad.
The keeper of knowledge.
Mister Fix-it.
The person who you look up to and admire.
The man who lounges in his underwear!

This father’s day, how about giving dad something that he really wants? Now don’t get me wrong. I’m sure he loves those Three Stooges ties or the shirts that say “World’s Greatest Dad”, but how many times have you actually seen him wearing them? Since the dawn of time, one thing is for certain: Men love devices, especially tools. They bring out the primal need to either fix or destroy something and a sense of pride as they show off their new toy to the neighbors. So, in the tradition of top ten lists, we bring you the Top 10 Coolest Father’s Day Gifts.

1. The Stanley Maxlife™ Tripod Flashlight

Perhaps you’ve seen the commercials with the alien fixing his ship. He pulls out his LED flashlight, hits a button and presto - a set of tripod legs are released. Now he can set the light down, have it pointed where he needs it and have both of his hands free to finish the job! How many times have you heard dad complain that he doesn’t have enough hands, or even worse how many times have you had to stand next to him and hold his flashlight while he spends countless hours fixing something? Thats why the techs at Irwin put together the Quick Grip™ one handed bar clamps, now dad can clamp what he needs held using one hand and be assured that it will stay put! The clamps come in a variety of sizes and prices, including the 6 inch (506QC), the 12 inch (512QC), the 18 inch (518QC), the 24 inch (524QC) and the 36 inch (536QC). None of the clamps are more expensive than $30, so you can get dear old dad multiple sizes and not break the bank!

9. Compact Mini Drill and Drivers

Another hip trend in power tools are the compact mini drills and drivers that have recently flooded the market. These compact sized drills range from 3.6 volts to 10.8 volts and are small enough to fit into your pockets! Virtually every power tool manufacturer has a small driver, such as Skil’s (2336-01) IXO Palm Size Screwdriver, Makita’s (TD020DSEW) 7.2 Volt Lithium-Ion Pencil Impact Driver, Bosch’s (PS40-2 and PS20-2) 10.8 Volt Lithium-Ion Pocket Driver and Impact Driver, Hitachi’s (DB3DL) 3.6 Volt Lithium-Ion Screwdriver, Panasonic’s (EY7410LA2S) 3.6 Volt Revolithium drill/driver and Milwaukee’s (6546-6) 2.4 Volt Two Speed Screwdriver. These small drills and drivers can virtually get into any space, they are the ideal for Dad’s small projects!

10. The Job Site Radio

Dads workshop is fun, but wouldn’t it be even more enjoyable with his own rocking sound system! Sure, he probably will be pumping out the best of Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, but at least it would be a start! Popular amongst construction sites and with farmers, the job site radio is a perfect gift for those dads who wanna jam out while diving into their latest projects! Several manufacturers offer radios with multiple features like the Milwaukee 49-24-0280, which can charge cell phones and run other portable devices with its 12 Volt auxiliary port. The Makita BMR100 is considerably smaller than the competition. The DeWalt DC011 can charge your other batteries while it runs. Finally, the Bosch PB10-CD comes equipped with a built in compact disc player, ideal for when you need to borrow it! These radios are cordless and operate off of their brands style of batteries so make sure and match up the radio to your dad’s favorite tool manufacturer so he can interchange the batteries amongst his other tools!

With this list of cool tools and accessories found at ToolBarn.com, you can give dad a perfect gift that will make him feel the admiration and love he deserves!

The keeper of knowledge.
Mister Fix-it.
The person who you look up to and admire.
The man who lounges in his underwear!

This father's day, how about giving dad something that he really wants? Now don't get me wrong. I'm sure he loves those Three Stooges ties or the shirts that say "World's Greatest Dad", but how many times have you actually seen him wearing them? Since the dawn of time, one thing is for certain: Men love devices, especially tools. They bring out the primal need to either fix or destroy something and a sense of pride as they show off their new toy to the neighbors. So, in the tradition of top ten lists, we bring you the Top 10 Coolest Father's Day Gifts.

1. The Stanley Maxlifetrade; Tripod Flashlight

How many times have you heard dad complain that he doesn't have enough hands, or even worse how many times have you had to stand next to him and hold his flashlight while he spends countless hours fixing something? With the tripod you don't have to, and each leg of the tripod can hold three AA batteries meaning you can operate it on three, six or nine AA batteries depending on what run time you need or how many batteries you can find!
