I want to share this article that I wrote for StartUp Mindset earlier this year. The article is written primarily for aspiring entrepreneurs but when I reread it, I realized that these tips could apply to just about anyone. Hope you enjoy! You’ve heard that it is important to learn how to invest in yourself. But what does that actually mean? The purpose of any investment is to yield an acceptable return. Building wealth, a business, or a healthy relationship all require an investment of some kind. So how can you invest in yourself so that you can improve your overall lifestyle? In this article we’ll show nine ways to invest in yourself this year. 1) Finally Start That Business In a recent article, we reported that nearly 24 million people in America are thinking about starting a business but only a small percentage of them actually do. This is surprising since starting a business in the 2020s has never been easier. Starting a business is one of the biggest decisions that a person can make. In fact, many business owners compare starting a business to having a baby. It takes patience, it can be stressful, and it’s also an emotional rollercoaster. But also like having a baby, it can be one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for yourself. Finally starting that business that you’ve been thinking about could be a great investment into your personal development as well as your future finances. Running a business is not easy and requires the entrepreneur to learn more, stay focused, and increase their ability to be persistent. But the returns for your hard work could be life changing. 2) Invest In Your Communication Skills Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Richard Branson, and many other thought leaders agree that communication is the most important skill a leader can have. In fact, Buffett was once quoted as saying, “Without good communication skills you won’t be able to convince people to follow you even though you see over the mountain and they don’t.” Research by the Carnegie Institute of Technology in A Study of Engineering Education reported that 85 percent of financial success comes from the ability to effectively communicate, negotiate, and lead, both when speaking and listening. The tragedy is that, although it seems everyone understands the importance of communication, many people do not take the time to improve their communication skills. If you want to improve your relationships, business, and even your financial situation, this year spend time improving your communication skills. Communication is not just being able to write and speak clearly. Great communicators are also great listeners. Joining an organization like Toastmasters International will help introduce you to the basics of good speaking and listening skills. Continue to practice what you learn in the real world with friends, co-workers, and employees. 3) Put Your Money to Work Investing in yourself may also be in the form of investing your money. If you want to invest in yourself, it is important to make sure that your money is working as hard […]

I recently visited my old job to see if some of my ex-coworkers were still working in the office. To my surprise, I saw that several of them were still working for the company. Many of them were happy and content with their job. However, many others spent time asking me about my business and how they can start their own. In fact, this has been happening more frequently with individuals that I meet that have a full-time job. This is probably due to the fact that entrepreneurship has increased so much over the years. More people are starting businesses from scratch, out of their homes, and online. I talked to my co-workers for a few more minutes but had to leave because I had an appointment elsewhere. As I was leaving, one of the new employees there that had gotten hired after I left the company stopped me and asked me the same questions: “I want to start my own business, what is the quickest way to begin?” Since I was in a hurry, I gave her a quick suggestion of how to get started but emphasized that if she has a business idea, to get started as soon as possible. One of the things that hinder potential entrepreneurs is hesitation and/or lack of taking action. Being action focused is one of the best ways to move your goals along faster. In business, this is also the best way to make sure you are not spending time on something that may not work. And that is what tends to happen when a person has a business idea but never acts on it. The idea just sits there. What complicates things is the fact that ideas may sound good and may even work on paper, but may not translate to success in the real world. Which is why you should take action right away so that you don’t spend brain space thinking about something that is doomed to fail. So today I will be sharing 3 ways you can get your business idea going quickly Utilize All Free and Low-Cost Options To get started with a business you must decide what tax classification meaning if you want to run the business yourself or start a corporation. It will cost you some money to take care of the legal stuff but from there, you can utilize a ton of free tools to establish your business idea. Here are some free online tools that can help you get started. Keep in mind, these are free options so as your business grows you may need to start paying for their services in order to exude more professionalism. But for now, these should do the trick. Free website: Squarespace Wix.com Weebly.com Free/Low Cost Business Cards Free Logo Services Vista Prints Use Virtual Methods These days many businesses use virtual office services to take of business operations. In the past, a person would need to rent out an office and hire a staff […]

It doesn’t matter what age you are or where you are in life you can start setting short-term and long-term financial goals. It is easy to think about financial goals, but it is not always easy to implement them. Some of the keys to success are setting tangible and realistic goals, sticking with a plan and tracking your progress. Make sure to include your spouse in any decisions if you are married. Here are some steps to get you started and keep you on track. Discover Your Values In order to set realistic goals, you need to know what your values are and what you hope to accomplish. This gives you something to base your decisions on. So, before you create a budget or cut your spending, sit down and write down your values and what you want your life to look like. Think about what your financial goals will allow you to achieve in other areas of your life. Organize and Track Your Spending It is hard to set goals when you don’t know where your money is going. It is important to have an idea of your average monthly income, your reoccurring monthly expenses and the total of any debts you have accrued. This also means managing your financial documents and your time. Round up your bank statements, tax documents, credit card information, insurance policies and investment information. Organize these documents and put them in a safe place that is easy to reference. You should also collect personal documents like your birth certificate, marriage license, death certificates, divorce papers, copies of wills, etc., and put them in a safe deposit box or an equally safe place at home. Tracking spending habits is one of those things many people struggle with. Especially if they have difficulty saving money. Tracking money is a habit that has to be developed. A friend told me that financial guru Dave Ramsey suggests that you track your expenses by writing everything down that you spend or using an app to do the same thing. But here is a better way. Most large banks now have expense tracking software available on their online banking. These tools allow you to know where your money is going by displaying the dollar amounts spent on categories like food, rent/mortgage, gas, and entertainment. Many of these tools also display your spending habits using colorful graphs and you can even create budgets directly online. Here are a few of the largest banks in America that have financial budgeting tools already available on their online banking. Bank of America https://www.bankofamerica.com/onlinebanking/financial-management-tools.go Citi Bank https://online.citi.com/US/JRS/pands/detail.do?ID=CitiFinancialTools Wells Fargo https://www.wellsfargo.com/online-banking/my-money-map/ PNC Bank https://www.pnc.com/en/personal-banking/banking/checking/virtual-wallet.html HSBC Bank https://www.us.hsbc.com/1/2/home/personal-banking/pib/money-management-tools BB&T Bank https://www.bbt.com/online-access/online-banking/plan-and-analyze.page Regions Bank https://www.regions.com/help/online-banking-help/budget-and-planning-tools# Budgeting If you notice that you are eating out too much or spending more than you would like on entertainment, now is the time to start getting your spending into check. Create a budget. First, allocate money for all of your necessary expenses: insurance, rent, mortgage, phone service, cable, utilities, etc. Then, determine a percentage […]

Super productive I think it is safe to assume that you would like more time. To me, time is the most valuable asset in the world. Time is something that we all need but cannot create more of. Time with our families, time to grow our businesses, and time to do the things we love. But there are a lot of things that rob us of our time. In this article, I will show you how I used some productivity methods to double the amount of work I completed in a week while saving myself a ton of time. 5 Days of Work Done in 2.5 Days The third week of the month is usually the busiest for me. During that week, my team and I are preparing for the next month. Perpetration for the following month is so important that I put off some other tasks until all the work is done. If I’m not careful, the tasks can swell and leak into the following week. This usually puts me in a tough position since there are several other things that I need to oversee. For example, this month I needed research email marketing campaign services, create a new sales initiative, and hire a new employee. I began to wonder if there was a way to take the project that would usually take 5 days and cram it into a shorter amount of time. Maybe 2 or 3 days? I first dismissed the idea because, for the past 6 months, it has been normal to spend the entire week on the projects. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it had to be done. Spending less time on this project would not only give me a few extra days to work on other things, it would actually open up time throughout the month. It would take some long hours and an intense amount of focus but it was possible. Plus, it would free me up to work on bigger more important projects throughout the week. And I liked the sound of that. I convinced myself that it was worth a try. Things Got Very Uncomfortable I run a remote company and work out of my home most of the time. Because of this, I can work during any time of the day. And I knew that to complete this challenge, I would have to work at odd hours. Since this was my first time doing this, I did not know what to expect. Halfway through, I started to doubt if I could complete the project without completely burning out. There was a period of time when I worked 6 hours straight, took a break for an hour, and then worked another 6 hours. I took a 4-hour nap then woke up to work more long hours. It began to feel very uncomfortable because it seemed like I wasn’t making a dent in the project. I first thought, “man, this sucks”. Then I noticed that I was […]

Moving Mountains In life, we will all face problems. Some of the problems will be small and pesky, others will be giant and intimidating. I think we can all agree that no matter the size of the problem, we always want them gone. Throughout my years working for a financial institution, and now as an entrepreneur, one of my goals has always been to not let little problems stop me and to conquer my biggest problems quickly. I learned that not all problems can be eliminated swiftly. There are some issues that we face that can only improve over time. But it was always my goal to understand which issues required me to be patient and which issues I could solve now. In this post, I will show you how to solve your bigger problems in less time. Solving Big Problems Also Solves Small Problems My digital media startup recently launched our first product this month. Up until this point, my startup has generated income through corporate sponsorships and partnerships. But now, I decided that it was time to launch a product which is a completely different beast. When you launch a product for the first time, there are a lot of problems to solve and questions to answer? Should we set up third party online shopping carts, build our own online store, or use an online marketplace like Amazon.com? How early should we start marketing? Who is our target market? What would make this launch a success? And on and on and on. Each step of the product launch process had its own big problem to solve. Each with a completely different solution. During the process, I was determined to avoid letting little problems trip me up. What I learned was if I focused on the big problems the little problems solve themselves! More times than not, solving big problems usually created a solution for the little problems. The idea of solving little problems by solving big problems also works in other aspects of life. Solving the bigger problem of a lack of confidence in yourself also solves the problem of the fear of taking risks that can move your life forward. Dealing with the big problem of your philosophy of money will help solve the small problem of a low bank account balance. Identifying and solving the problem of unhealthy eating will give you more energy to wake up early, get physically fit, or just have the energy and vitality it takes to accomplish any goal. This mistake many people make when trying to solve small problems is that they focus only on the small problems. Not the bigger and more difficult issues that create or perpetuate the small problems. This is why I believe solving bigger problems should hold a high priority in your life. And the sooner you can solve those big problems, the better. How to Spend Less Time on Big Problems Create a Sense of Urgency If you’ve ever had to finish something […]

Piece of cake It seems like most of the people who inhabit the earth today are happy with just getting by, getting through, and getting just enough. But you are not one of those people. You may not be happy with accomplishing less than you are capable of. Perhaps you want more and want to exceed your potential. If “good enough” is your goal, this post is not for you. There have been times in my life when I have achieved my goals and there have been many other times when I’ve overachieved my goals. The feeling of overachieving (and the steps to doing so) are vastly different than just reaching your destination. In today’s post, I’ll show you how to overachieve your goals. Why Overachieving is Better than Just Achieving You may be saying to yourself “I would love to just accomplish my goals”. Although I commend you for even having a goal (you’d be surprised by how many people don’t have any goals) there are many good reasons why overachieving your goal is much better than just reaching your goals. Here are a few reasons: Overachieving makes smaller goals easier-When you practice the habit of overachieving some of your goals, you will find that just reaching some of the other goals becomes much easier. This is due to you becoming accustomed to the effort it takes to overachieve. This will make small goals seem effortless. You’re better than that-Most likely, you’re capable of accomplishing much more than you are currently doing. By setting the bar lower, you are limiting yourself and will never really know what you are capable of. Achieving leaves no room for error– Just reaching for your goals is similar to having just enough money in your bank account for your bills. What happens if there is an emergency? If you do not give yourself a buffer of cash, you are risking not having enough money for an extra expense. The same is true for reaching your goals. On your way to your goal, if an obstacle comes up that requires more of you than you anticipated, are you going to be able to rise to the challenge? Selective Overachieving I consider myself a selective overachiever. Don’t Google “Selective Overachiever” because it doesn’t exist. I made up that term to describe why I have overachiever tendencies without some of the other common traits found in overachievers. What this means is that even though I love to overachieve, it is not the driving force in my life. And, even though I LOVE to accomplish goals, the goals themselves have to be meaningful and relevant to my life’s direction. This is not true of many overachievers. Most overachievers need to win at everything, have to be perfect, and feel lost or depressed if they are not. Nothing about that seems healthy and it is certainly not appealing to me. Overachievers often report that they are subject to high anxiety, worry, and stress. Those are also things that […]

I can remember when I first decided to write The Quick Confidence Guide. It was about 5 years ago and Potential 2 Success was a few years old and was getting tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world. For some reason, my email box began to fill with questions from readers asking about how to increase their confidence. The questions were not the ordinary inquiries that I was used to. The readers sending the emails seemed to have specific questions about how to build confidence in a particular area of their life. When I realized this, I decided to create The Quick Confidence Guide. The Quick Confidence Guide gives strategies that can be applied immediately to the area of your life where you want to increase your confidence. This book is a guide to help anyone gain confidence quickly in many everyday situations. There are many books on confidence but most of them deal in generalities and not in specifics. They outline the nature of confidence. This book deals with specific situations and then it goes into details on how to gain confidence in those situations. Until now, the book has only been available on paperback. I have recently decided to make it available on Kindle so you can download it and read it anywhere. In celebration of the book being available on Kindle, I have decided to drop the price for a limited time from $10 to $3.99. I have also lowered to price of the paperback version. In case you enjoy the feeling of turning pages. If you want some quick ways to get a boost in confidence, check out the book on Amazon! Here are a few things the book contains: Learn how to give dynamic speech presentations Be self-assured on your next first date Increase your physical athlete performance by having more confidence in your ability Gain comfort to initiate conversations with complete strangers Become bolder in your ability to take risk and increase the confidence of the people around you Speak up at business meetings, handle confrontations, and much more. Don’t forget, the $3.99 Kindle sale price and the $6.99 paperback price is for a limited time. Visit Amazon to get your copy!

This year will be different The desire to improve oneself is something I think we all have. But for some reason, many people struggle to become the person they’ve always wanted to be. Change can take time and that may be the reason so many people cannot seem to reach the goals they set or accomplish the things they desire. Although I do agree that change does take time, I also believe that there are things that can be done to move you in the right direction at a faster pace. Those things are often never easy which is why most people do not do them. However, if you want to drastically improve yourself in any area of your life, you need to accept the idea that it will take some extra effort. In this week’s post, I will show you 4 ways that you can drastically improve yourself. Goal-setting Method I’ve always been a goal setter but in 2007, I tested and adopted a method of reaching my goals that I still use every year in one form or another. In 2006, I bought a monthly planner in December. The planner was like many others that were for sale except for one detail that attracted me to it; it had extra blank pages in the back for taking notes. Several pages in fact and it also had a note section on the bottom of each month. “Perfect”, I thought. On the first page of the notes I listed 18 things that I would like to do, have, or be. One of my “do’s” was to travel to other cities and another one was to increase my savings by 10%. I didn’t categorize them but I did make a note next to each item so I knew that I had a balanced list. I visited my list several times a day. I looked at each item and evaluated how close or far I was from accomplishing them and what I was doing that day or week that would get me closer to my goals. I used the notes section at the bottom of each month to document my progress. By May of that year, I had accomplished 12 of the 18 things on the list and two months later I accomplished the other 6. One of the reasons my goals were accomplished so fast was because of how well defined my goals were and I often I evaluated them. Every year since then I have set my goals in the exact same way. I’ve learned that setting my goals up the right way makes it easier for me to reach them. The real key is to define my goals clearly and map out how I am going to reach them. Then, I check my progress daily. If I find that I am taking steps in the wrong direction, I correct the action so that I can get back on track. The one thing I don’t want is to slack off […]

I did recently. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know that I’ve been working in the financial industry while running my businesses part-time. But earlier this year, I decided to take the leap and become a full-time entrepreneur. The Growing Feeling A few months before I left my career, I began to have a funny feeling that I would not be at the job for long-which was crazy. It was crazy because the job that I was able to land was a dream job for me. I had the opportunity to work with several different teams, learn under a very knowledgeable Advisor, and set myself up financially, if I succeeded. Plus, the job offered me the freedom to create my own schedule and even work from home from time to time. It was nice, but it wasn’t enough. For me, the reason why I do something is more important that how I do it. Even though I felt as if the job was great, I was not convinced that I was reaching my full potential there. Plus, my side businesses began to grow and more and more people began to take notice. Waking up at 3 a.m. to begin my day has been a part of my life for sometime. But suddenly, I began to wake up earlier and earlier to do the work necessary to run my business. Before I knew it, I was waking up at 2 a.m. just to get the work done. My morning routine began to solely focus on my business. It also began to consume my thoughts at work. I fought it and told myself that I would seriously consider leaving my career for my business in 6 months. Less than a month later, I called my boss and told her I was leaving. Maybe you have been thinking about leaving your job to become an entrepreneur. If you have been, hopefully this post will let you know what is needed in order to do it successfully. I also hope that my experience will let you know if leaving your job for entrepreneurship is right for you. How to Know if You Should Become an Entrepreneur The Courage to Start The internet and bookstores have no shortage of information on the topic of entrepreneurship and business. There is a reason for this. It is because everyone has an opinion and business is not an exact science. That is the downside as well as the upside. Because business is not an exact science, what it takes to succeed in business is hard to nail down. It is also something that changes constantly. If you are afraid of change and have no intention of fighting your fear, entrepreneurship may not be for you. But, that change is also a wonderful thing. To start a business 30 years ago was much harder than it is now. Starting a business would require a bank loan, retail space, employees, and money for advertising. Now, […]

Is it because I’m poor? Is it because I hate money? Is it because I use the bartering system? None of the above. Although, a bartering system does sound pretty cool. If you’ve been reading my blog for some time, you’ve seen that I’ve written about a lot of things related to personal development. Some of the most popular being about developing mental toughness, waking up at 3 am, improving communication, etc. But one topic that seems to be absent is an article about money. Have you ever wondered why? Well, it wasn’t by choice. The Forbidden Topic: Why I Was Not Allowed to Write About Money For several years, while writing, speaking, and running my entrepreneurship projects, I also had a career in finance. I worked in financial operations, personal finance and investing for several years. What I dealt with primarily was helping people manage money as well as being an investment advisor, selecting investments for clients, and creating financial plans. In order to get paid for giving investment advice and creating financial portfolios, a person is required to obtain certain licenses from the organization called FINRA. Those licenses are called The Series 6, 7, 66, 63 and/or 65. I have two of those licenses. Here’s the catch, the most important licenses you CANNOT get on your own. You must have a financial institution sponsor you. Because the institution pays for you to test for the license and pays about $7,000 a year to keep it active, they put a ton of restrictions on those Advisors that work for the company. One of those restrictions is that a licensed Advisor must notify their employer of any business activities outside of the company. I was allowed to have a blog, get hired as a speaker and run my media businesses, but I was forbidden from writing or speaking about finance. I worked for 2 different firms and both did not allow me to speak or write about money, investing, or even saving money unless it was for the company, not my own businesses. I recently left the firm to run my business’s full-time. My side businesses, writing, and speaking seem to be taking up so much of my time that I could not run them as well as have a full-time job. For Potential 2 Success, that means I can FINALLY write articles about money! I’ve been dying to share stuff with you!! Since I have left corporate America, I look forward to updating Potential 2 Success more frequently. Also, I have more big news so stay tuned!
