Attention all you Foodies… this Saturday, November 14th, the NW Food and Wine Festival will be taking place at the Memorial Coliseum Exhibit Hall. The organizers this year are promising over 600 wines and participants from over a dozen local restaurants. There even promises to be a number of interesting chef demonstrations. (Anyone up for learning how to butcher a whole pig!) The event will run from 4 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $99 and include samples. All-in-all it should be a fun and delicious way to spend a misty fall evening.

If you want to experience local food and drink in a less crowded and more sedate setting then you might think about joining our Epicurean Excursion. Our tours are limited to just 16 people, so get your tickets early! And if you want to make a full day of it, our morning Epicurean tour starts at 10:00 a.m. and ends around 2:00 p.m. giving you plenty of time to make to Memorial Coliseum for the start of the festival.

Despite having more craft breweries than any other city in the world, Portland, and the rest of the country, is suffering through a hops glut. It is so bad that some growers are not even bothering to harvest the pungent bitter little buds. Since no other style of beer takes more hops to produce than IPA, it seems to us that it is every Oregonian’s (and craft beer lover’s) duty to down an extra pint of IPA for the sake of the farmers.

To find out more about the hop glut see the recent Oregonian article: http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/10/glut_of_hops_unlikely_to_lower.html

If you want to learn more about IPA’s and Oregon’s craft beer scene in genera then you should book one of our Beervana tours.

The Brody Theater is one of Portland’s best improv theater groups and this week, in honor of the season, they are featuring “The Scary Movie.” Monsters, ghosts, serial killers, mummies, vampires, malfunctioning flashlights, damsels in distress, hapless heroes, and much much more. No horror movie cliche will go unrepresented. Remember… this is improv, so every night promises to be a completely different “scary movie.” Let’s just see your local movie house try to beat that! Besides, you’ll also get to see one of our Resident Experts, Brad Fortier, in action! (Um… he’s the one in the actor photo wearing the see-through mesh shirt and the devil horns… needless to say, not his usual tour ensemble.)

Show are 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information visit the Brody Theater Homepage.

It’s that time of year again. This Saturday, October 25th, is the Monster March in the Sellwood/Moreland neighborhood. The march starts at 3:00 p.m. at the Llewellyn Elementary school. So get the kids into their Halloween costumes, dress up the dog and get ready to hit the streets in what is one of Portland’s scariest (OK… cutest) parades.

For more information see the Oregonian event calendar.

If you are looking for more family-friendly Halloween activities we are offering nightly Beyond Bizarre Tours. Like the popular show Ghost Hunters we pass out real ghost hunting equipment before hitting the streets to visit some of Portland’s more notoriously haunted locales. The 7:00 p.m. show is our all ages tour. The later 10:00 p.m. tour is for adults-only.

Want to celebrate Halloween with the family but hate the idea of trick-or-treating indoors at the mall. Parents can bring their kids Howloween at the Oregon Zoo Amphitheater for a safe, outdoor alternative. Tykes in costume are invited to rush throughout the zoo in order to complete the annual scavenger hunt. The prize? Goodie bags filled with candy and prizes will be given out for completed hunts at the zoo’s exit. Free with zoo admission. For information, call 503-226-1561.

Or head to The Pumpkin Patch On Sauvie Island. Sauvie Island’s original corn maze destination opens its Haunted Field of Screams to spook its guests. Everyone from suburban families to hip, urban couples makes it a yearly tradition; when the mist settles into the field, there’s no better place in town for a scare.

Take the kids on a walk through over 1,000 feet of lighted woods decorated with fun Halloween sights and sounds at Fantasy Trail . There is also a 40 foot castle packed with Halloween scenes. That’s not all, there’s a tunnel, a maze, a crooked house, a suspension bridge, pumpkins, and refreshments.

Other fun ideas include glow-in-the-dark, Halloween mini-golf at Glowing Greens.

Have fun and be safe.

Yep… Portland was honored with a 7th place finish this month by Travel + Leisure Magazine, beating out big cities like Berlin, Rome and London, with having the seventh ugliest building in the world. Apparently, the editors at Travel + Leisure Magazine have decided to weigh in on the long simmering local debate about our city’s beloved (or, depending on your perspective, despised) Portland Building.

In our humble opinion here at Portland Walking Tours (or at least in the opinion of the 50% of us who love the building), if you think the Portland Building is ugly then you’ve never seen some of the big box stores out in the suburbs. Now that is ugly.

If you want to read more, or maybe catch a look at some of the competition, you can find the whole article in this months edition of Travel + Leisure Magazine.

Or, on the other hand, if you want to see the Portland Building up close and personal, and discover the real story about the building, its architect Michael Graves, and find out some juicy tidbits about Portlandia (that’s the name of the big statue gracing the Portland Building’s facade), then you should definitely come take our Best of Portland Tour. The tour leaves everyday (April through November) at 10:00 a.m. from the Broadway entrance to the Hilton Hotel downtown. The tour stops by the Portland Building for what always turns into a real conversation starter. So, local, or not, come join us for a Best of Portland Tour someday. We might not be able to make you change your mind about the building, but at least you’ll know the real story behind it.

Well… it’s that time of year again. Our local grocery stores all have stacks of pumpkins out front and big bags of Halloween candy conveniently located by the check out aisles. That also means that it is time for the Corn MaiZE at the Pumpkin Patch at Sauvie Island. This year’s MaiZE is dedicated to the Blazers. To find out more visit the Travel Portland Event Calendar. The MaiZE is open from 10 to 6 Monday through Thursday, and 10 to 10 Saturday and Sundays.

So if you are looking for some fun family activities this weekend, load the family into the car and head to Sauvie Island. Test your skills in the MaiZE, pick up some pumpkins, and on the way back into town maybe you can join us for one of our family-friendly 7:00 p.m. Beyond Bizarre Tours.

Our Beyond Bizarre Tours are at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and daily the week of Halloween! We pass out real ghost hunting equipment and take you on a tour of some of Portland’s more notoriously haunted locales. We also offer an Adults-Only 18-years-and-over Beyond Bizarre Tours at 10:00 p.m. if you are looking for some grown up ghost hunting!

So come downtown, cheer on the runners (and walkers), and listen to some great local music.

Arrgh… (Sorry, that was a left over “Arrgh” from my pirate post last Monday. I had to use it. It was about to expire.) Ahem… Anyway, this Saturday, October 3rd, is The Wedge, a celebration of Northwest artisan cheese and cheesemakers. If you didn’t already know it, we make some mighty fine cheese here in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, a blue cheese from Rogue River was judged the Best Cheese in North America this spring! The Wedge is taking place this Saturday at the Green Dragon Bistro & Brewpub in SE Portland (928 SE 9th Ave). There will be demonstrations, guest speakers, and of course lots and lots of tastings. Space is limited so you should definitely preregister if you want to take part. It should be a great time!

In fact, if you really want to make a full-day of it and round out your Pacific Northwest food experience, then you join us for one of our Epicurean Excursions either before or after taking in the Wedge. It’s guaranteed to be a great date for that foodie in your life.

For more information on The Wedge visit Oregon Dairy Farmers.

This weekend at Cathedral Park in St. Johns a bunch of dedicated Portlanders got into the Guinness Book of World Records by assembling the most pirates in one location with an official count of 1,651. To be counted as a pirate you had to be wearing a bandanna on your head (Argh!), wear an eye patch (Argh!), and carry a sword, real or not-so-much (Double Argh!). Parrots, peg-legs and tankards of grog, while welcome, were apparently not required. Oh… and pirates under the age of 13 had to have a waiver signed by their parents.

If you’d like to find out more you can read all about it in the Portlander.

Portland is one of the most frugal cities in the US, according to finance website Mint.com. Comparing 20 cities in 25 categories to find the cities that spend less than the national average on certain items. Portland tied with Miami, San Diego, Indianapolis and Brooklyn as the cities that cut back spending the most in 2009. Portland was also listed as the city that spends the most on sporting goods. (Chicago spends the most on books, New York the most on clothes and Philadelphia the most on electronics). Portland’s frugal ranking is likely a result of its high unemployment rate.

In international news, a Swiss company developing a rechargeable zinc battery technology for electric vehicles said it has chosen Portland as its U.S. headquarters. We’re thrilled because this is another coup for Portland in the race to be the future electric car capital of the world.

We’re not much for quotes, but this statement from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley hit a note: “ReVolt’s revolutionary technology is a great addition to Oregon`s clean energy community. With market leaders in solar, wind, bio mass and wave energy located here, Oregon has emerged as a clean energy hub.” We couldn’t say it better ourselves.

ReVolt Technology LLC is still searching for an actual location, but they expect to be operating by Dec. 1st. They said they will employ about 75 the battery development phase and possibly 250 employees in subsequent testing and manufacturing operations. To ease their landing here in the U.S., ReVolt is applying for $30 million in research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and they intend to apply for an Oregon Business Energy Tax Credit.

On our “Best of Portland” tour, we show off electric car parking spots in the heart of downtown as we delve extensively into all kinds of alternate forms of transportation as a central theme to what makes Portland unique. Come join us and get the inside scoop.

Here’s a hint: if you see a hot-pink truck in your vicinity..RUN..do not walk. Go right past GO!!! The wheels are in motion at Voodoo Doughnuts and the new Voodoo Van is sneaking around town.

The new Van is a team effort with Urban Opportunities that provides job-readiness training for homeless and at-risk youth and all proceeds from Voodoo Van sales go back to Urban Opportunities. How perfect is that? And any guilt you feel towards your diet, melts away knowing that you have done something to help someone else.

Do you accept this mission? The van pops up around town in unsuspecting locations serving many of the same delicious treats. Here’s a clue.

TriMet’s newest light rail line, the MAX Green Line, will soon carry riders from Clackamas Town Center to downtown Portland. The trip only takes 39 minutes even though there are a total of 29 stations along the way. Join all of us for the opening-day celebration September 12 with free rides on the Green Line starting at 11:30 a.m. On the following day, daily service begins. And with 2,300 parking spaces at the five new Park & Ride lots, we’re sure the Green Line will see a lot of ridership early on.

Since our “Best of Portland” tour walks by the Green Line tracks every day, you would think that this is the end of the story for us. So (in typical Portland Walking Tours fashion) we’re looking forward into the future. As far as we’re concerned, it’s only 6 more years for the opening of the MAX Orange Line going down to Milwaukie!

Guests of our daily “Best of Portland” walk have witnessed the “Skate Route” signs that we always point out as part of illustrating the importance of alternate forms of transportation. And now, the Wall Street Journal has declared Portland to be the epicenter of skateboard friendliness. According to the WSJ, it took many years of activism at multiple levels to get us where we are today. But, we’ve apparently arrived.

We’ve come a long way. We remember the days before Tony Hawk was a household name and the Burnside Skatepark was illegally built and people thought it was a public nuisance. Now, it’s sanctioned by the city and has been featured in videogames and movies. To further show how integrated skateboarding is into Portland, local movie director Gust van Sant’s fictional Paranoid Park was partially filmed there and delves into skateboarder culture.

Last week, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom announced an executive directive to change the way San Francisco thinks about food. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, all San Francisco city departments have six months to conduct an audit of unused land – including empty lots, rooftops, windowsills and median strips – that could be turned into community gardens or farms that could benefit residents, either by working at them or purchasing the fresh produce.

Urban farming is not a new idea and the fine city of Portland was ahead of it’s time…as usual. The city completed an audit of urban land a number of years ago in a study performed by a group of Portland State University students. The study called “The Diggable City” is available on the website of Portland’s Office of Planning and Sustainability. Multnomah county took it one step further and is making urban farming a reality in the Portland area with real tangible projects like County CROPS and County DIGS.

A few of us chat this up on our Epicurean Excursion tours since it’s not just about trying to eat & drink about 25 things; it’s about rethinking food while having some fun. We also serve extra knowledge.
