Robert Pattinson was supposedly giving Kristen Stewart a really hard time about her cheating scandal leading up to their recent split, according to Us.  You mean just like a normal couple, they had a hard time moving forward from the infidelity?!

Joe Francis had some really disturbing words for the jury that found him guilty of false imprisonment (three counts), assault causing great bodily injury (one count), and dissuading a witness from reporting (one count), on May 7th:

After Madonna Instagrammed her pre-event ritual of vacuuming her bathroom in high heels and thigh highs before dashing out the door to the Met Gala, sales of her preferred Miele model skyrocketed. This of course prompted Miele to do the only logical thing: make Madonna their spokeswoman and launch a new line inspired by her, brilliantly dubbed The Immaculate Collection. Though the pun is superb, and Mieles are exquisite, the match up is still strange. It got me thinking: what other bizarre celeb-endorsed products are floating in the consumer ether of recent past?

Earlier today, I posted about not buying the whole Kristen Stewart/Robert Pattinson break-up.  BUT I’ve changed my mind in the past few hours, because Us has reported that Kristen Stewart has sought out comfort from non other than Taylor Swift.   That’s right–Kristen Stewart drove to Taylor Swift’s house for (apparently) some post-break-up-girl-time.  I feel like the only reason Stewart would do this would be to either A) Hear a live rendition of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” 50 times in order to brainwash herself into actually believe it IS over,  or B) To learn some tips on how to date every Hollywood actor she can now that she’s single.  So there you have it.  I surrender and confess that they’re probably on a break, most likely because Stewart is only 23 and not exactly itching to settle down just yet.

Brad Pitt spoke to Esquire about his choice to stop using drugs after getting “fed up” with that lifestyle and feeling that he was wasting his opportunities.  He also talked about the fact that he has very few friends, and that makes him very happy:

“I have very few friends. I have a handful of close friends and I have my family and I haven’t known life to be any happier. I’m making things. I just haven’t known life to be any happier.”

Of course, there are also many downsides to social media that we’re all aware of.  I don’t need to list them–we each have our own personal gripes with what we see on these networks every day.  Mostly we just roll our eyes at those things and keep scrolling…and scrolling… (I don’t want to even fathom how much of my life I’m spending doing the action of “scrolling.” #Scary.)

Thinking about it recently, it hit me: the thing that bothers me the MOST about social media is the ease of being able to instantly compare your life to hundreds of others, and how we all contribute to this dangerous game of comparisons.  Basically, we do this:

I recently went home to spend time with family, and was barely on Facebook or Twitter.  I had to actually stop myself from Instagramming pictures of my adorable dog, nieces and nephews.  I wanted to get away from that need to “show” people that I have a good life, and just experience my good life,  for myself.

Just after 3 days of little interaction and time on social media, I realized how much time we are wasting trying to put our lives out there, projecting an image that others can compare their lives to.  Now, I don’t think this “project and compare” thing we (mostly subconsciously) do comes from a vindictive place.  I don’t put up good things or bad things happening to me to make others feel good or bad about themselves, but that is oftentimes the outcome.  And I think it affects younger people a lot more…

When I was 18yrs old and Facebook was new, I think we all did the I-got-dumped-but-I-can-use-this-to-show-them-how-much-better-off-I-am-without-them! thing.  I mean, a lot of people still do it (though we’re much more subtle about it now.)  I don’t think it’s healthy, though.  You shouldn’t feel like you have to prove you’re good enough, or worthy, or special, to anyone.  Especially to many people who, as much as they can like and comment on your updates, aren’t really in your life in a meaningful, real-life way.  I’m using the break-up example because it’s the most obvious.  You’re always trying to “win” the break-up, and with Facebook etc., we can “win” without actually having to speak or have any direct interaction with them at all.  But the real question is…why do you need to “win” a break-up??

Social media allows you to create this brand for your life–what you look like, what you like doing, what interests you–and because of this, we’re all subconsciously comparing our lives to others, all of the time.  I see a boy in high school getting married, and I’m like, “What?! He’s 25!  I’m no where near ready to get married!”  I see a girl my age/type who books this series regular role for some amazing TV Show and I’m like “Oh my god, what am I doing with my life?  She’s so ahead of me in her career, what the hell am I doing?  Nothing anywhere near as impressive! I’m a failure!”  I see an ex-boyfriend post pictures of a girl he’s now seeing, and I’m like, “Okay, we’ll she’s pretty and probably better for him in every way and I hate it as well as myself.”  I mean, this is exhausting and unnecessary.

I’m not one of those “screw social media” people.  I NEED IT for my job (I’m a blogger!), and I enjoy a lot of what people share.  What I think is important for us to be aware of, though, especially in the younger generations, is that social media shouldn’t be a platform for which you lose self-esteem by comparing yourself to others, or for gaining self-esteem by the approval of others.

I fear that having things liked and favorited and re-tweeted is producing a culture of people that constantly attach their self-esteem to the approval of others.  Self-esteem has to come from within–from being kind to yourself, by being enthusiastic about what you like, regardless of whether others like it or not.  We are each unique, no one is on the same journey, and we’ve all got to go our own way at our own pace.

So the next time you hear that voice in your head comparing yourself to others, stop and drop the scroll.  Go live something, and do it for you.

I may, however, be wrong about my suspicions, which is why it’s a good thing that the status of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s relationship has precisely 0-0% impact on my life.  But I do think the media is getting out of hand (well, has always been out of hand) when it comes to making GRAND assumptions, regardless if this story is true or not.  Like, seriously?  A model eats a cheeseburger–she must be pregnant!  An actor wears the same pants two days in a row–he must have had a sexy sleepover with that other actress last night because actors CAN NEVER wear the same pair of pants two days in a row without it screaming “booty call!”  I hang out with Ryan Gosling as friends at Yogurt Land–we must be engaged! (Ugh, I had to stop that last rumor of leaking. MY LIFE IS SO HARD. *sigh*)

If they DID break up, then where is the U-Haul?!  If you recall, (which I for one pathetically do, as its my job to be morbidly curious about these affairs), when Robert and Kristen did break up following her cheating scandal, there was a U-Haul outside the couple’s home from Rob moving out.  Don’t tell me he can’t afford a U-Haul, now.  You can’t spend all of that Twilight money on emo indie records that fast.  A real break-up requires a real moving truck. BOOM! I should have been a detective…

CASE CLOSED.

Note: If I’m wrong and they DID break up…don’t worry.  I’ll get over it.  Somehow I think I’ll get over the pain…
