A Word from Our Winners

When I contacted the Mark & Julie, winners of the Summer Tablescape contest, they were thrilled with the win and I was thrilled with their reply. I let them know how much we envied their wonderful Seattle view, and Mark, who grew up across the lake in north country, New York, said: "our view is still not as good as the view from the restaurant in Quechee, which I have enjoyed both at the height of summer and right after a fresh snowfall - need to get there in the fall!"

I have to agree...although the Space Needle is an amazing site, the view from the Terrace at the Mill (especially in the fall) is nothing to scoff at either.

In addition to the skyline view, the winning factor of their Summer Tablescape entry was their creative use of the Simon Pearce product. Mark & Julie used their Essex goblets to serve gazpacho ("We use the Essex goblets for just about everything") and flipped a Revere bowl upside-down to use as a cheese dome ("You should have seen how excited I got a few months ago when I realized that the Revere bowl could be more than a bowl -- we knew that had to be in the picture").

The lucky winners (who are celebrating their first anniversary next week) chose the Addison pitcher as their prize (my personal favorite as well).

Simon Pearce @ the Westport Fine Arts Festival

Westport's 36th Annual Fine Arts Festival, a tradition held in downtown Westport, was held outdoors this past weekend. Over 140 artists came to showcase their work. The artists set up their booths along the beautiful Saugatuck River in Westport and showed their original artwork to the thousands of viewers that attended.

There were 7 different mediums of artwork presented: photography, print making, oil, mix media, water colors, sculpture and drawing. Each category was judged by the Westport Arts Center and a winner in each of these mediums was awarded a Simon Pearce Thetford Bowl as the prize.

The Best in Show award went to Mark MacKinnon(c), a photographer from Beacon, N.Y. Festival chairman and owner of Cocoa Michelle, Michelle Weber (l), presented the ribbon, while Bob Le Rose (r) president of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association and owner of Bobby Q’s, presented MacKinnon with a gift from Simon Pearce.

Baby Bird Update - Week 2

Last Friday, I posted a story about a nest of baby robins that had been built just a foot from the door to our office. It's hard to believe that just a week ago, our little feathered friends were completely featherless. It's amazing how much they've grown in just a week. To refresh your memory, here's the image of what our four baby birds looked like last Friday:

They look so crowded in that little nest. At the rate they're growing, they'll be flying away before we know it. Does anyone have any suggestions for names? :)

Newly married and just having moved into our new apartment, my husband and I were unpacking both old Simon Pearce favorites and new pieces off our gift registry. It felt like Christmas! We have a nice wooded view from our living room window where we like to eat some of our meals off our favorite dishes. These delicious vegetables came from a local farmer's market. Yum!

Summer Tablescape Entry - Dinner in the Garden on Virginia's Eastern Shore

On the Monday after the July 4th weekend, we set a table on a patch of grass next to the boxwood gardens and the nearby corn fields - already tasseled. A mix of Simon Pearce linens, glass and pottery fit the bill perfectly. Fragrant magnolia blossoms cut from nearby trees filled a glass bowl and caught the magic light of the setting sun in their expansive, creamy petals. Rosemary and lavender taken from the kitchen garden were tied around the napkins. A carafe was filled with cool, crisp "Steel Chardonnay" from a local vineyard. The meal: soup made with the first crop of sweet corn combined with roasted red peppers, followed by Chesapeake crab cakes, with a salad of haricots verts, almonds and crisp bacon. Summer at its best!

Since receiving our Simon Pearce pottery and glassware a year ago for our wedding, we have enjoyed them daily. One pleasant discovery has been that the small Revere bowl and Belmont dinner plate work perfectly together as a cheese dome and server. In the large Revere bowl and Essex water goblets is an heirloom tomato gazpacho. In the background is the Space Needle still easily visible in the late summer light.

The Most Dedicated Mother Bird Ever

Right outside our offices in Windsor, VT, we have the most dedicated robin ever. For some reason, she decided to build her nest on top of an emergency light, right next to the door:

As you can imagine, this has caused quite a bit of stress for the poor bird, as well as for quite a few Simon Pearce employees, who have ducked instinctively as the bird bolts from her nest. This door is used regularly by our sales and marketing staff, and each time someone walks in or out the door, the robin quickly flies away, but never too far. She generally sits 10 feet away and not-so-patiently waits for the person to leave.

When she first started building her nest there were several occasions where this fly-away-every-time-a-person-walks-by action caused her to accidentally knock her construction to the ground. But she always started over, stubbornly picking up the fallen twigs and rebuilding. We were all surprised when she finally completed her nest. I, for one, thought she would never actually lay eggs in the nest, what with the stressful conditions she lived under.

But, sure enough, as I walked through the door today after grabbing lunch, after ducking as she flew off, I saw a little beak peek its way over the edge of the nest. I grabbed my cell phone and snapped some images, the whole while momma robin yelled at me from a nearby tree.

She has quite a few little hatchlings. Looks like four. Good for her. I, for one, am impressed. Here's the mother bird, chirping at me from the tree:

She had been registered at Simon and was married last year and of course led me to register at Simon for my May wedding!

I love this picture because you can see so much of your product with beautiful first of the summer hydrangeas.

This picture is also very meaningful to me as it was one of the best days I had with my closest friends and the very beginning of the start of my new life. My own Simon Pearce collection I received as gifts is as important to me as this picture.

How To Serve Punch by Gourmet Magazine

Here’s a great example on how versatile our product can be with a little imagination. Gourmet.com’s recipe section features classic and exotic cocktails featured in past issues of Gourmet magazine.

This rich Kaffeeklatsch Punch is presented in our hand blown glass Barre Serving Bowl, which is placed inside our Large Barre Serving Bowl. The latter is filled with ice to keep the punch cool, while not diluting the delicious concoction with melting ice.

This is a great idea for serving chilled soups, such as a gazpacho, a colorful fruit salad, or your own punch recipe during your next summer dinner party!

Gourmet Puts the Norwich Chiller to Good Use!

Gourmet.com has a neat library of favorite cocktails and their stories as they were published in past issues of Gourmet magazine from 1941 up to today. The Negroni Capriccio was featured in Gourmet's August 1956 issue.

According to Gourmet, "This cocktail may have been invented by a Florentine bartender for one Count Camillo Negroni in the ’20s (or not—it doesn’t appear in cocktail books until much later), but it became part of the popular culture in the ’50s."

To make your own, fill a Ascutney Double Old-Fashioned glasse with cracked ice and pour 1/3 jigger each of dry gin, Campari bitters, and Italian sweet vermouth. Stir the mixture and add a twist of orange peel. Fill a Norwich Ice Bucket with cracked ice to use as needed.

Simon Pearce Visits Past Basket in Milwaukee

About a month ago, Simon visited our partner store, Past Basket, in Milwaukee, WI, for a trunk show and signing event. Even though the weather was cool and gray, they experienced an excellent turnout. Everyone who attended felt that it was a wonderful event, taking advantage of the rare chance to meet Simon Pearce in Milwaukee.

Beautiful natural floral, fern, and rhubarb leaf arrangements were displayed in Simon Pearce vases. Light lunch was served, and incredibly creative bakery items, made by one Past Basket sales associate, included dark chocolate cupcakes with white pontil marks. Sangria punch with beautiful fruit was served in an SP pitcher.

New Summer Menu at Simon Pearce in Quechee, VT

As some of you may know, each season we refresh our restaurant offerings. Our new summer menu is beginning today in Quechee, VT. The dinner menu includes many tried and true favorites such as the Horseradish Crusted Blue Cod with crispy leeks, herb mashed potatoes, and a balsamic shallot reduction.

This summer, we're also featuring many scrumptious newcomers. Start your dinner with a Confit Free Range Duck Crepe with orange, honey and grain mustard sauce, and Ginger Seared Yellowfin Tuna with crispy lotus root, sesame seaweed, wasabi crème fraiche. Entrees include Ancho Chili Rubbed Misty Knoll Chicken with chevre, roasted corn and black beans, and tomatillo cilantro sauce, and Gulf Shrimp and Scallops with pappardelle, parsley, and a spicy roasted tomato sauce.

Simon Pearce Donates To VINS In Support Of The Annual Bridathon

Simon Pearce recently presented the Vermont Institute of Natural Science’s (VINS) a donation check amounting to $1,057!

Simon Pearce partnered with VINS for their 31st Annual Birdathon. Birdathon is the world’s largest bird-watching competition and a fun way to support VINS’ mission to motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment through education, research and avian wildlife rehabilitation. This year, the event took place from May 9 to the 16.

Our retail stores in Quechee and Windsor, Vermont, and Hanover, New Hampshire, raised funds through the sale of their hand blown glass bird paperweights between April 20 and May 22 and donated 100% of proceeds from the sales of this design.

The partnership was featured in the Eagle Times and they created a video showcasing the making of the bird paperweight.>

What are your hobbies/favorite pastimes? Photography, skiing, cooking

How long have you been making glass? Almost 16 years

In this job, what interests you the most? All of the creative minds here! Jan is amazing. I love working with Theo on new pieces. Also, fine tuning moulds to be able to efficiently make a piece of glass from scratch that is outlined on a piece of paper as a drawing.

What is the hardest thing about making glass? Being consistent. Some days it's a challenge just to make the same gather over and over.

What is the most challenging piece you make and why? Anything square... not the mechanics of the piece so much as getting the moulds in and out of the water.

What is your favorite joke (PG rated only, please)? Three guys are walking down the street. Two walk into a bar. The third guy ducks.

What is your favorite glass to drink water/beer/wine out of? Why? I have an old Cornish tumbler I love. It was one of the first I made. It's got "personality".

If I gave you an elephant, where would you hide it? Behind a pile of cranberries.

What is the first word that come to you when you hear "Simon Pearce"? No words. Images in my mind. Mostly the Quechee retail shop.

Simon Pearce Visits George Watts in Milwaukee

Always innovating with a nod to their 139 year-old heritage, George Watts, purveyors of fine tabletop items and gifts since 1870, is the first American retailer to open the latest “shop within a shop” Simon Pearce Gallery concept, infusing the tony retailer’s store with the complete American made collection from the Simon Pearce workshops of Vermont, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Rob Adams, President of Simon Pearce, and Simon himself, stopped into the new gallery recently to admire this exciting new endeavor.

A Grand Opening is planned for Thursday evening, May 28th, 2009.

The First Day of Our Warehouse Sale

When we first started holding an annual warehouse sale, we noticed that customers would begin lining up outside of the doors, waiting to be the first to get the great deals. This year was no different. We had people waiting with chairs and coffee well before the doors opened at 8am. As the first day of the sale winds down, I wanted to share a short clip of those initial minutes of the sale after the doors were opened and it seemed that the flood of people would never end.

Our New Glassblowing Viewing Area

Our wonderful maintenance staff has been hard at work creating a new glassblowing viewing area at our facility in Windsor, VT. If you have ever been to our headquarter, you probably know that guests have been able to view the glassblowing show from a catwalk high above the floor. Now, you will have the option of also stepping right out onto the glassblowing floor where you can be just a few feet from the action. It offers a much more intimate experience, and now you can ask questions...but you'll probably have to yell...it's pretty loud.

Our 4th Annual Windsor Warehouse Sale

Don't miss this event! Our Simon Pearce warehouse sale in Windsor, VT, has grown year after year, and this one is promising to be our best ever. Customers begin to line up for hours before the event and practically break down the door when 8am rolls around. Last year, thousands of people came to our facility, all searching for that great bargain. And there were plenty to be found. Tables and tables of glassware, pottery, and various other items at amazing prices.

For four days over Memorial Day weekend, our warehouse will be again transformed to a bargain wonderland. This year, we're also offering delicious samples from our very own restaurant, and our neighbors over at the Harpoon Brewery will be providing some liquid refreshment.

Simon Pearce Designer's Take ~ Part 2

The Simon Pearce Greenwich, CT, store held its second event from the Simon Pearce Designer's Take series. On Saturday, April 18, Sandra Oster from Sandra Oster Interiors set her table in the Greenwich store. Here is a report from Christine Alston, Store Manager:

The table that Sandra presented was artful, unique, and clever. It displayed our product beautifully - with a twist! She featured 15 Windham Bud Vases, both large and small, with bright yellow-orange ranunculus, grouped randomly down the center of the table.

Place settings included Barre Dinner Plates in Shale and Side Plates in Slate, with small Chelsea Low Bowls, Cavendish Stemware, Geneva Flatware, and Dwell Linens. Barre Tealights were filled with coarse salt and pepper instead of candles!

She accesorized the table with some of her own candle stands, and brought in her own chairs. Hopefully the photo we're sharing with you does it justice; the table is lush and filled with product.

Sandra composed her table in the morning before the event, and from 1pm to 3pm, she greeted people and talked about her choices of product. She was friendly and engaging, and customers were intrigued by her display.

Our glass receives Tom Colicchio's seal of approval!

In a Q&A interview of Tom Colocchio by Edward Lewine from The New York Times published April 29, 2009, Tom was asked what his favorite table decoration was. "This decanter and set of wineglasses from the designer Simon Pearce," he answered. "They're different - not the delicate wineglasses you're used to." Colicchio is the founder and co-owner of the Craft restaurants and head judge of the television series "Top Chef."

The interview took place in Tom Colicchio's New York City apartment. Photographer Ben Stechschulte seized some great photographs of Tom and his apartment. Here is a cabinet filled with Simon Pearce barware glasses, Woodstock Wine glasses, a Hartland Decanter, and--my all time favorites--Hartland Flutes.

If you love birds, this is the type of event you must attend! Registrations are now open for the Vermont Institute of Natural Science’s (VINS) 31st Annual Birdathon. Birdathon is the world’s largest bird-watching competition and a fun way to support VINS’ mission to motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment through education, research and avian wildlife rehabilitation. For those who register before May 9 will be entered in a raffle to receive a free VINS partner-level membership.

Our retail stores in Quechee and Windsor, Vermont, and Hanover, New Hampshire, are sponsoring this event. They will donate 100% of profits from the sales of their hand blown glass bird paperweights between April 20 and May 22

Simon Pearce also donated a one-of-a-kind birdhouse sculpture to be awarded to the most accomplished Birdathon participants. The sculpture symbolizes our company's philosophy of recycling and reuse and of supporting the arts and environmental projects. The birdhouse is made from wooden molds used by Simon Pearce master glassblowers to create original Simon Pearce hand blown glass designs.

Designer's Take ~ Part 1

This month, our Westport and Greenwich stores in Connecticut are hosting our first series of Designer's Take events. During these events, interior designers host an in-store presentation as they bring their interpretation of the Simon Pearce product line to life. Their work then remains on display for two weeks after each demonstration.

We hold two drawings during each reception. A lucky winner receives a complimentary design consultation from the featured decorator/interior designer and another winner receives the Simon Pearce Corinth Vase from our new Corinth Collection.

Kathi Gernart was our featured interior designer during the event held on April 4 at the Greenwich store. Kathi Gernat composed a table around the theme of "Paris" with fresh flowers, decorative accessories, and books from Paris. We played French music and showcased our new Cavendish Red Wine stemware. The table was fun, different, and showed our product in a different way.

The following Sunday, the Westport store welcomed Chris Gulotta and George Snead from The Wakefield Collection.
They created two tables. Shown below, this spring table look features our Brookfield Dinnerware in Ocean and our Stratton Stemware.

The table's centerpiece consists of the new Corinth Bowl adorned with both a large and a medium Woodbury Hurricane displayed on either side. Colorful balls in the bowl and seashells in the hurricanes pick up the colors from our pottery's Ocean glaze and the napkin's details.

The second table, shown below, has a more "masculine" and modern look and feel. George Snead chose the square shape of our Sutton Dinnerware to match the Woodbury Lanterns. The Geneva Flatware is the ideal combination with this choice of dinnerware.

The lanterns are part of this table's centerpiece and surround a low Barre Serving Tray in Slate glaze. I really love this contrast in heights, and it shows a different option from the spring table. Colorful fruits displayed in the Barre Serving Tray reflect the warmth of the wooden table.

Note the choice of glassware: no stemware, which strengthens the intent to bring a masculine look to this table. Instead, our Tall Norwich Beaker and Norwich Beaker adorn each place setting. A great balance between casual and elegant dining.

These tables remain on display until our next Designer's Take series, which will take place this weekend. Guests will take away creative and inspirational ideas for home decor and entertaining. You will learn fun tips, and discover how versatile our designs can be.

Saturday, April 18, Sandra Oster will be present at the Greenwich store to meet guests. Sandra Oster is president of Sandra Oster Interiors, where she and her talented team of designers have been creating beautiful spaces for more than 25 years. Sandra is one of the area's most highly-regarded and greatly respected Interior Decorators.

And on Sunday, April 19, Gillian Drummond will be present at the Westport store. Gillian Drummond from Gillian Drummond Interiors has created splendid, timeless interiors for homes and offices across the country for over 25 years. While Simon Pearce believes in creating timeless designs, Gillian's interior design philosophy is to create a timeless and uniquely personal environment.
