Mistake 5: Playing Too High at Newer Games

Most advanced poker players tend to experiment with different forms of poker. A good limit hold em player will generally give no-limit hold em a chance, as well as perhaps pot-limit Omaha. While there is nothing wrong with experimenting a little, advanced players tend to make the major mistake of playing limits at these new games similar to the limit they play at the game they have mastered.

For example, suppose you are a $5-$10 no-limit hold em player. You are a winning player, even at this fairly high-stakes game. You want to give pot-limit Omaha a chance.

Omaha is a game that appears very similar to Texas Hold em but in fact is quite different. The additional two cards and the restriction that players can only use three board cards creates an entire new array of strategies relevant to Omaha. A beginner who assumes that Omaha and Texas Hold em are essentially the same game is headed for disaster.

Omaha is Not Hold em: Bluffing

One mistake that players comparing Hold em to Omaha make regards bluffing. While bluffing in limit Hold em is difficult because of the fixed betting limits, bluffing in Omaha is that much harder. The reason for this is that with so many cards in play, someone usually has the nuts or close to it by the river. If you move all-in in a pot-limit Omaha game on the river and someone doesn’t have the nuts, you’ll probably win that pot. Unfortunately, unlike in Hold em, if you’re facing two or three opponents at the end, one of them probably does hold that boss hand.

Omaha is Not Hold em: Position

While position is important in Omaha, trying to manipulate the table so that loose players are on your right and tight ones on your left, as you might do in Hold em, is more trouble than it’s worth. It will be easy to see from the flop whether it is worthwhile for you to continue with the hand, so knowing what your loose player will do, while important, is not nearly so important as it is in a game like no-limit Hold em.

Omaha is Not Hold em: Results

If your Omaha results are not as good as your Hold em results, there has got to be a reason. Ask yourself what elements of strategy you are bringing over from your Texas Hold em games and if they really apply to Omaha. If they do not, you’ll want to lose those ideas and replace them with ones that are more Omaha specific.

Game selection is a critical poker skill. While many new talented poker players strive to increase their playing skills in order to win more money, often the route to increased profits lays simply in choosing a better game to play.

When It is referred to 'game selection,' I am not really referring to the type of poker game one plays (e.g. limit hold em vs. no-limit hold em). You want to play in a poker game where you have an advantage over your opponents. No matter how good you are, if you play in a game filled with sharks, it is virtually impossible to make any money. The luck factor and the rake would make profits slim in the long run.

In order to win money, you need to play at a game that you can beat, but how do you determine which game that is? There are several ways to quickly analyze your opponents to figure out if you should play in the game:

First, you may just know the opponents. If you play at your local casino or an online poker room for awhile, you will get to know the players. Either by keeping notes or just through memory, you will know who is strong and weak and who you understand the best.

Second, determine how loose-passive the game is. A game that is loose is good. This means the flop percentage is high and that people will call you down with hands that really only can beat bluffs. A game that is passive is also good. This is determined by how much raising occurs. If people won't bet hard when they have very good hands, they will let you draw out on them and let you get away with only small losses on your losing hands.

Fundamentally, the two work well together because the loose game lets you win big pots with made hands, and the passive game lets you draw cheaply and have small losses on losing hands.Finally, take notice of the number of fundamental mistakes people make.

After reading this site, you will hopefully have a good idea of poker fundamentals: preflop hand selection, pot odds, etc. If you notice people calling with Kc 4h and drawing to inside straights without pot odds, the game is good. People who make fundamental mistakes such as these are doomed to lose a lot of money in the long run. Be at their table when they are losing this money.

Split bets happen, when you place your chips on the line between two numbers. In this case you win, if the ball stops on either of the two numbers. The payout is 17 to 1, and the odds against you winning are 18 to 1.

Betting on a row, ( for instance 1,2,3) will give you an 11 to 1 payout, and 11.667 odds against winning.

Likewise, betting on a column, offers a 2 to 1 payout but the odds will be 2.167 to 1. First, middle and last 12 will also carry the same odds and payout.

odd and even, red and black, 1 to 18 and 19 to 36 will pay out 1 to 1, and will carry odds of 1.111 to 1. five number bets are also used. ( like 0,00, 1,2,3) but you need to know these bets are subject to the largest house edge ( on average $0,079/ every $1 bet)

In addition to the types of bets named above, some casinos offer other bets too, like 'the neighbors of 0' ( numbers from 22 to 25 on the wheel, 22 and 25 included)'the third' and the 'orphans' are such bets as well...

Now for roulette strategy: there is no mathematical system that can beat roulette over a long period of time. If you were looking for something like that, forget it. If you find something like that somewhere, it most probably won't work. There are rumours that most real-life roulette wheels have some sort of a physical fault that can be exploited, but online roulette wheels never show any wear and tear.

There are a set of rules, though, that can maximize your chances, provided you stick to them:

Do not play American roulette. Play European. ( house edge is bigger for American roulette (5.26%) than for the European one ( 2.70%)

Avoid straight bets and betting on five numbers. As said before, these bets carry the biggest house edge.
Even, odd, low, high, or red and black. These are the most profitable bets and come with the lowest house edge.

With all that being said, remember: online roulette never slips, never wears out a bearing, and never gets anything sticky onto its surface. It's the perfect random number generator and it will offer you the perfect roulette game.

The simplest type of bet you can make is called a straight. This means that. you'll place your chips dead in the middle of a number square. If that number comes up you win. Let us now see what really happens here, mathematically speaking: Let's suppose you played a $1 chip on No. 6 ( it's black, but that doesn't matter here) Let's also suppose the ball stops on 6 black. You win. You get 35 dollars for the $1 bet you've made.

That means, the payout for a straight is 35 to 1. The odds, though, of you winning this bet, are 37 to 1. In layman terms, that means you win once every 37 times when you play a straight. ( these are mathematical odds of course, in reality it is possible that you'll win twice out of 5 bets then not win for the next 50. If you play for a very long time, though, and at the end of that long session you calculate your average win-ratio, you'll get 37)

Now, then, you bet 37 times to win once, spending 37 dollars in the process, and when you do get it right, you win 35 dollars. That's a difference of 2 dollars. That's your house edge right there. Divide 2 by 37, and you get the house edge on every individual $1 bet you make. I hope I managed to keep the explanation simple and reasonable. Now that you know what your odds are, for a straight bet, let's see what other kinds of bets you can make.

Something about roulette trilogy: Part I

Ever since French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented the small wheel ( roulette is French for small wheel), in the 17th century, the device has been used for its intended purpose.

Well, anyway, it's been used to generate random numbers...the fact that people no longer use those random numbers for science experiments but rather for gambling, is a different matter.

Since all he wanted was to generate some numbers for scientific purposes, Pascal saw no need for a "0" on the wheel. The "0" was added later ( in 1842, to be exact by Louis Blanc) in order to increase the house edge. The European version of the game, without which we can't even imagine a casino anymore, still functions using a single "0".

Americans, however, felt they needed to further increase this edge. We all know that in America everything is bigger than in pretty much any other place, and, apparently, this had to be applied to the house edge as well. They added a second zero ( "00") or a picture of a bold eagle ( America's national bird) for good measure.

A roulette table is made up by the wheel itself, plus a section of the table where an intricate-looking table is displayed containing all the numbers from 0 ( and 00) to 36. This table also contains several other fields: The black and red ones, the odd and even ones, the first 12, second 12 and third 12 fields, the 1 to 18 and 19 to 36 fields, plus separate fields for every column and row.

Bets are made by placing chips or stacks of them onto different sections of this table. The winner will have his chips ( plus the ones he won) pushed to him by the dealer.

''The Theory of Poker'' by David Sklansky remains the single most important book ever written on poker. Completed in 1987, it was the first book to correctly recognize many of the underlying strategic principles of poker. These concepts are illustrated with examples from Seven-Card-Stud, Texas Hold em, Five-Card-Draw, Seven-Card-Lowball, and Lowball-Draw, but they are as much applicable to all variants of poker.

Sklansky's Basic Theory of Poker:

Every time you play a hand in a different manner from the way you would have played it if you could check all your opponents' cards, they are the gainers; and every time you play your hand the similar way you would have played it if you could see all their cards, then they lose. In contrast, every time the players play their hands differently from the way they would have if they could see all your cards, you gain; and every time they play their hands the same way they would have played if they could see all your cards, you surely lose.

This basic theory is explained in common language, but has an exact mathematical interpretation. The expected value of every decision made during an actual game can be compared to the expectation of the correct decision, based on perfect information. Every player's long term expectation is calculated precisely by the relative frequency and severity of these ``misplays''. On an average, a player who makes fewer misplays than her opponents will be a winning player. The theorem may seem to state the obvious, but has many subtle implications to poker strategy, some of which are illustrated in the text.

Other more fundamental concepts discussed in this book include the value of deception, ``odds'' (=pot odds, implied odds and reverse implied odds effective odds,), the danger of the free card, the semi-bluff, and the importance of position. Each of these notions can be included into a theoretical framework for understanding the game, and could prove to be major strengths for a computer algorithm.

Facial Expressions
Many players can look at opponents at find out whether or not they have a weak hand or strong hand and it’s why many people wear hats and sunglasses. You want to make sure you don’t appear nervous while playing in a hand. You also don’t want to seem over confident when you have a good hand because you want to be paid off by your opponents. Your facial expressions are very important to keep in check and its best if you can remain perfectly still.

Eyes
Your eyes will play a huge role in giving away a tell to your opponent. Often when you look away from the table you’ll have a weak hand and if you’re looking right into your opponent’s eyes then they might feel you have a strong hand.

Shaking
Some players can’t help but shaking when they have a good hand and you should make sure you don’t shake when you have a good hand. Also look for opponents who shake while in a hand because this might mean they have a monster hand and you might want to fold.

Looking at Chips
Players will usually look at their chip stack when they hit on the community cards and you should take note to this. Most players won’t look down at their stack when they have nothing so keep this in mind and try catching a player in the act next time you play.

Attitude
The attitude of a player when you play online poker or live poker is important to know because their betting will usually reflect how there mood is. If there attitude is angry then they might be on tilt and you might have a good chance of winning some money off of that player. It’s important to stay composed while at the table because you don’t want your opponents knowing how you feel at the poker table as it only give them the advantage.

Gambling became popular in China. Canton, Macao, Shanghai and Hong Kong became the famous for their liquor and gambling. Mah Jongg, meaning ‘sparrow’ is an ancient game which was developed primarily for the rich class of China. The game is said to have been invented by a fisherman to prevent sea sickness. It is said that the fisherman invented this game to distract the other fishermen from the surroundings, so that they do not feel sea sick in the middle of the sea.

The game underwent a lot of variations and every region called it with a different name. Finally, the game was standardized in early 1990s. the game consists of 136 to 144 tiles depending on the whether the players choose to play with flowers or seasons. The play resembles rummy except for the fact that the game is played with tiles. The game also uses a pair of dice and chips to keep the score. It requires four players, the aim of each being to obtain a set of tiles. The set types that are permitted are “kong”, “pung” and “chow”. A complete hand contains four sets and a pair of similar tiles. The fist one to have this combination of fourteen tiles wins.

Despite the popularity of these gambling games, not all Chinese states are ready to legalize it. While Macao has legalized gambling, Shanghai carries it on illegally. In Hong Kong, only horse raising is legalized and The Hong Kong Jockey Club earns huge revenue.
