Renaissance Man go deep and nautical with their second Made To Play effort on August’s Brainstorm EP. No strangers to PnT, the duo’s sound has evolved heaps since their seminal Spraycan EP (which was featured on PnT back in its infancy ) and even their recent Babbadabba EP, hitting the nail right on the head in my books with Mindmap’s stunning atmospheric chants and tribal wood hits. The soundtrack to a last dance on a sinking Titanic catapulted into the year 2142 or the only tune on an unearthed time capsule containing only an iPod that is discovered in the year 3030. The Brainstorm EP is available now on Beatport and many other fine digi music retailers.

While not as popular and dominant as we can remember it being in the 90’s and early 00’s, Hip-Hop is still very much alive in our city of Toronto.  While we don’t cover this genre much here at PnT, I know that all three of us definitely still listen to it and dig for some new material.  I personally just burned a few notable mixtapes that a few hard working MC’s – - Omar Linx, JR Mint & Rayhaan – - have put forward in association with DJ NEF-YOU.  I have personally known JR Mint (Mats Andersson) since about 2001, and over time met both Omar and Rayhaan at parties downtown.  All three of these MC’s have been long time friends, and I know from experience that they have put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making the music that they love – - and it has paid off because they do it quite well.  I received each of these mixtapes at different times over the last month or so, and have been meaning to post some of the tracks up for a while now because this is shit is pure heat.  Well, here we go -  cop each of the artists entire mixtapes for free by clicking the links found below.

Omar LinX is that kid who was blessed with that hard raspy voice we all wanted while growing up and freestyling in our friends basement.  His mixtape “A Cold Welcome” (Download Mixtape) is the precursor for young emcee’s debut album “City of Ommz”. City of Ommz is gonna be a banger of epic proportions as it features guest appearances from Royce Da 5’9”, Joell Ortiz, and Deuce Wonder, as well as production from local heads such as Zed’s Dead and Pro Logic.

JR Mint (aka Minty) was always the “little guy” in cyphers and freestyle battle competitions – - but he was also the one who had the biggest mouth.  I could never touch this guys freestyle steeze, and I must have tallied over 9 billion defeats against him in 2005-2006 alone.  His newest mixtape called “The Mini Mixtape” (Download Mixtape) is a compilation of freestyles over your favourite Clipse instrumentals.  The compilation is a surprise project Minty put together to tide fans over while he puts the finishing touches on his debut album “Canadian Mint“.  Also check out Minty’s track with Rayhaan “Malone and Mint, off RayRay’s “Southern Hospitality” mixtape, that shit is greasy as hell.

Rayhaan (aka RayRay Malone) teams up with DJ NEF-YOU for his latest mixtape “Southern Hospitality” (Download Mixtape), a set of songs which hit like a barrage of heat seeking stinger missles that you cannot avoid.  This guy has been putting it in over the years, and this project showcases RayRay’s lyrical ability over Southern-style beats laid out by Nef.  In preparation for his debut album at the end of this year, Rayhaan recently opened house for the legendary Sean Price at Revival on the 26th of August, and dropped two singles along with the Southern Hospitality Mixtape featured here.

Things have been hectic over here at PnT as we keep on that hustle and grind.  Mandelephant, Billionaire and I have been working our arse’s off lately while trying to bring some innovations to the site while organizing upcoming parties such as our MAJOR RAGER kickoff at Andy Poolhall, as well as our second roadtrip to Ottawa for the DUBSMACK monthly.  This plus our “real life” commitment’s have definitely kept us busier than the bees at Burt’s apiary – but we like to keep buzzin like that.

We have a really awesome Plugcast for you all this week, and it comes all the way from our friend Diesel Laws in Australia.  Diesel Laws is a serious force to be reckoned with when it comes to the topic of production.  While largely unknown, Diesel Laws – - a graphic designer, DJ and nasty producer of house music that packs some serious bass and wonky wobble – - is definitely on the come up, evidenced by the fact that his tracks (many of which he shares for free) have been springing up all over the blogosphere lately.  Diesel has been working his ass off non stop, and it seems to be paying off.  The man with a plan has clinched some label support from Canada’s Epidemic recordings and UK’s Wonked Records – - both of which are releasing tunes from this Goliath of a producer.  I suggest everyone check out this wicked exclusive mix simply because it contains a number of new productions that Diesel assures have not been heard by anyone until now.  Worldwide exclusives brought to you by Diesel Laws, only here at Plugged not Thugged.  Get into it!

Heavy.  Scotland’s Hostage has really captured my attention over the past week or so, probably because when I hear his bass-banging techno beats, it feels as though they are blasting through my frail eardrums like a runaway freight train hitting a brick wall.  I first heard about hostage — a Nightshifter’s artist who brings only the freshest bass-filled produce to market — in passing as I checked out Dani Deahl’s blog right before I saw her destroy the dance floor in Toronto about a week ago.  Since then a few of his tracks have burned big holes in my speakers.  The coolest thing about Hostage and Nightshifters is that they are offering people a free EP which includes two hot tracks and several remixes of those tracks! If you like bass music that deviates from the norm and doesn’t quite fit in the dubstep category, then lock yourself in a room with the big bad bass monster that is Hostage.  He takes no prisoners.

Also loving this remix of Axwell’s (feat. Sean Terriblini, better known as S-T3RRA, is an electronic music producer and DJ from San Francisco California who I met online nearly a year ago.  This young and extremely personable producer released his first EP Kissing Cliche on France’s Noise Dealerz has been making waves with his interesting “horror-electro” productions – - real wicked tunes which incorporate little bits of punk, thrash and horrorcore into electro music.  I asked S-T3RRA to make us an exclusive plugcast a while back and he agreed – - however, his exclusive mini mix did not meet our time requirements of 45 minutes, so we could not post the hot mix as a plugcast.  Sean will get us a longer mix for the plugcast series in the near future, hopefully around the time he releases his upcoming Mandrake EP.  For now, enjoy S-T3RRA’s minimix and a copy of the song Kissing Cliche off his last EP of the same name.  Also, dont forget to check out some of the cool shit this guy is working on by visiting his myspace and soundcloud sites, electro smashers await.

Today we have a gnarly little tune to feature from a couple of our close friends and Major Rager family members Barletta and O-God.  I got a call this Saturday from O-God – - aka Owen Zahara, infamous for his Barbara Streisand “remix” – - saying that he and Barleezy had gotten into the sauce during an afternoon hangout, got chooched and decided to make a tune together.  Well, apparently these cats can work alright while plastered, because they pumped out a groovy little disco-flavoured tune that combines a smooth rolling bassline with O-God’s love for bongos and Barletta’s signature stabs and sweeps.  The combination resulted in a beat that makes you want to “Cruise down the highway going 140 km/h”, as Owen puts it.  The tune is called Croozer and should be picked up by those who aren’t snoozers.

I am also going to share some other classic O-God mashes and remixes which I have always had a soft spot for.  First up is the Shimmy Brain Blend which brings together two classic tunes from rap legends Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Cypress Hill into a fine blend of amazingness.

This smooth tune is what O-God terms the Feelin for Intro Mashup, which brings Alan Braxe’s ‘Into’ together with the classic ‘Feeling for You’ by Cassius in a beautiful way.  This is one of my favourite O-God blends.

This is a remix that O-God did for Salacious Sound’s Streetlab remix competition back in the spring.  In my honest opinion, O-God’s remix was the best of all the submissions for the competition, but unfortunately he did not win the race according to the user-submitted voting system.  He did clench the “Dick Diamonds Choice” award however, which is still a great accomplishment in itself.

This was the very first O-God remix I had ever heard.  I remember first hearing the tune while completely smashed and swerve-dancing during one of his weekly sets at the Sutra Tiki Bar on College Street back in 2009.  I have played this tune out so many times that now I can barely listen to it, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do the same.  Get nauseous on this stinker!

Jay-Z – Run This Town (O-God Remix)

This one is going to take over.  After hearing it in the Magnetic Man Essential Mix I have been searching high and low looking for more info about a release date.  There is a promo vinyl pressing that has been out a couple weeks in the UK but the tune is coming out on Technique Recordings [TECH068] and is set to be released Sept. 6th, 2010 in all formats.

Adam F has been known for his work in drum and bass and producing banging hip hop beats for the likes of Redman.  He teams up with UK drum and bass producer Fresh to create a party rockin remix of the Dead Prez anthem “Hip Hop”.

I just got hit up this afternoon with a banging new remix of Kele’s Everything You Wanted by my man Hatchmatik of Peer Pressure.  Hatchmatik was making some major waves on the net a year or two ago with several popular remixes such as My Girls by Animal Collective.  In the spring of this year I was really wondering what was up with Hatchy because he seemed to have cooled it down as his website became stagnant and I was hearing very little about this killer Canadian producer and DJ.  I reconnected with the Peer Pressure fam a month ago when Mandeezy and I threw down a big banger of a set with Hatch and A-Rock during one of the infamous On The Run afterpartys.  The night was fantastic – - we finally got a chance to play with the Peer Pressure cats rather than watch them – - and what really made it special was that these guys were stoked to play with us, people who got as excited as they did during a set.  We were all dripping with sweat and exploding with excitement with each big drop and breakdown.  The highlight for me was when Rock & Hatch finished their set and Deezy dropped the classic Krames remix of Shoulder Lean - – a staple during 2007 Peer Pressure jams.  Taste this savory morsel for yourself.  You know where you heard it first!!

Our good friends Sam and Biz of The Killabits shot another hot little nugget our way today, and we have decided that this special tune needs to be shared with the bassheads of the world immediately.  This special tune was recently released by Universal/Republic Records, and has already racked up over 130,000 views on Youtube in less than a month.  The banging track is a Killabits remix of Stephen Jerzak’s song She Said, which features Leighton Meester.  Until now, the song has only been available through the Killabits facebook fanpage, but the group now wants it to be made more widely available by offering PnT the exclusive right to share this banger.  This song is a great example of just how versatile the Killabits are when it comes to making heaters that draw on music from a wide variety of genres, styles and artists.  I would urge all the bass lovers of the world who are planning to pass through Toronto to try their best to check one out the Killabits’ energy filled performances at a weekly Bassmentality party, thrown in conjunction with their friends Zed’s Dead.  In fact, if you move fast enough you can even catch both the Killabits and Zed’s Dead rocking with Plugged Not Thugged’s Mr. Mandelephant and Billionaire on September 1st for the Bassmentality/Adrift Booty Shaking Competition at Wrongbar.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of partying with A-Rock, Hatchmatik, Merk Meny and Shaydakiss – - of  Montreal’s Peer Pressure camp – - at the Drake Hotel on Queen West.  The jam was held to celebrate the crew’s monthly party series — held in the Drake’s underground rave cave — which has become a staple for party rockers in Toronto.  These guys are ultimately responsible for making Mandelephant and I party promoters and general party animals.  The PP Crew knows what is fucking up in terms of music, being sexy and kicking your ass.  If you have not been to a Peer Pressure party, I suggest you do so immediately – or risk missing the jam of a lifetime.  Here is a hot 4-year celebration mix the foursome put together for the jam along with a sweet remix by Merk Meny, the man of many Marks.  Shake and groove.

It has been a couple of months since we last posted about Terror Tone, an extremely talented and hard working producer and DJ from Toronto that has been turning heads around the world with his club-terrorizing bangers.  His Snake Charmer EP on Intellegenix was very well recieved — especially in Europe — and Terror’s recent remix of Gooffee’s Fat Pound was featured as the number one recommended electro track on Juno for the month of July.  Terror has become a very close friend of mine over the past year and I can honestly say he is one of hardest working producers out there  — the man lives for his beats and it is hard to get the man out of his lab.

Terror Tone put together a short promotional mix for a dubstep gig He, Grizzy,  SWIVL and I (Dick Diamonds) — all representing the Major Rager Fam — played at Ritual Nightclub this past Friday.  The monthly bass party is called “DUBSMACK” and is thrown by the capital’s KNWLDG Entertainment group, and has been gaining heavy steam over the past couple of months.  August’s DUBSMACK! party — on Friday the 13th — was pumped up by the Rager Fam into a energy-filled mega-rager rammed with sweaty bodies that just didn’t give a fuck about anything other than shaking to heavy bass-lines that would blow over the elderly in a hurry.  To see some of the sick pictures from last Friday’s jam, click here.

Due to troubles experienced with the FTP server this week, I am a bit behind in posting a  bunch of heated content to the blog — including this weeks plugcast (008), which features another MUM production duo known as the Tempered DJs.  The DJ’s consist of two lads — Pete Stanley and Mike Knapper — who produce a  generally deeper and darker blend of techno and tech  house.  The Tempered DJs have seen growing success since signing to MUM records in 2009, with the explosive release named the Keane’s Changed EP – - which sent ‘That Picotto Track’ flying to the 1 slot on Trackitdown’s Tech chart – and it rode high in their Top 20 Tech House Chart of the year.

What is poppin today everyone?  We apologize profusely for the lack of updates since the 6th, but our FTP has decided to jam the fuck up and has stopped percolating.  I am not a tech-saavy one like Mandelephant, and since he is out in Vancouver playing in the mountains we do not have our reliable tech-titan support as usual.  I cannot upload tunes onto the server, so while I have hot mixes such as ‘The Dubsmack Mixtape’ by Toronto’s Terror Tone and week #8’s Plugcast by Europe’s Tempered DJ’s,  I just can’t upload and share them with you readers.  Luckily for us, I have some goodies from a young UK producer/DJ called  YoYoYoni, who just so happens to be a very avid PnT reader and fan.  His Late Summer Mix 2010 has been spinning in my car on constant repeat for a week straight – longer than a kid with ADHD and no meds could ever dream of.  The whole mix is solid, and includes songs by our good friend O-God, who was really stoked on the mix as well.  My favourite part of the mix is the ultra high energy segment between ~14:00 to ~18:00.  Download the mix and see why.  I have also included a couple of the edits Yoni used in his mix, and they are little nuggets for sure.  Keep checking back because we are working our asses off to remedy the problem – and once we do, its all over for you and your ears!

Gooffee has sent us their exclusive podcast — called Getting Plugged & Gooffee — as part of this weeks special plugcast double drop in celebration of MAJOR RAGER’s one year anniversary.  These young producers have been making some serious waves as of late, gaining popularity with their hot Intellegenix release EP 2.  In fact, Juno chose the duo’s tune Fat Pound (Terror Tone Remix) — remixed by Major Rager family member Terror Tone — as the site’s number one recommended electro tune for the month of June.  These young and extremely talented producers not only know how to grease off hot bangers in the studio – but they also know how to get a greasy party banging hotter than a sauna.  The boys came and closed out the night for Major Rager #9 — Terror Tone’s Snake Charmer EP Release party — and I don’t think I have seen a Rager hit such a wild peak as when they played with the Terror.  These guys are definitely on the come up and I suggest that you keep them on your radar because they will be bringing that heat that nobody wants to miss.  If you happen to be in Toronto this weekend and want to see a wicked set by extremely enthusiastic DJ’s, then come check Gooffee at Major Rager’s birthday this Saturday.  Get hyphy.

This week is a special week for us here at Plugged Not Thugged because it marks the 1-year birthday of our highly popular MAJOR RAGER party series.  Major Rager was born from a need to move our nutty 2-story Foxtrot parties (originally held at Mr. Mandelephant’s King St. loft) to an actual venue, as we were bringing in over 250 people every other month to Deezy’s abode — which became a filthy and costly affair.  MAJOR RAGER — which has been running and steadily growing for twelve long months — has been held at the Augusta House, our favorite Kensington Market hangout.  Despite the fact that Augusta’s staff and management are the best people we have worked with, the Rager parties have simply outgrown the venue’s maximum capacity of 198 patrons.  Life is a series of eras, and we would like to sincerely thank the Augusta House staff for the wonderful year that Major Rager enjoyed with them — we wish you all the best and thank you for everything!

To commemorate the end of a wonderful era,  the headliners of the show — Tape Deck Bros and Gooffee — have both recorded their exclusive plugcast mixes for PnT.  The Tape Deck Bros  “Plugged in the Tapedeck” exclusive has just been posted — and the hot Gooffee mix will be posted later today so keep your eyes peeled.  The Rager series will be moving to legendary College Street hangout Andy Poolhall for the September 4th Major Rager, which will increase capacity to approximately 500 patrons, and provide a gigantic amount of bar space – so the booze will flow like the Nile.  Get wild!

Toronto’s Ash Ainsworth and Chris Sanakidis — more commonly referred to as the Tape Deck Bros by hot young girls — have been corrugating the hell out of the scene in the past year with their in-your-face party rocking and cardboard headpieces that remind me of low-budget Daft Punk helmets made by broke-ass college kids who have completely mismanaged their funds.  These two Mega City natives have been producing music together since before their electric shift to electro-house in the mid 00’s.  The former “Animal Clinic” band members have been working their asses off and it seems to be working out for them, as the Bro’s have been gaining a strong following among throngs of horny,young and sweaty college kids that fiend for high-energy parties which are perfect for freaking the fuck out.

Balagan is a very hot and fun track by New York’s elusive DJ Turk Disco.  The tune makes frustratingly good use of obnoxious horn music that I usually find more than annoying.  I searched Google and Yahoo to see if I could find some information on this producer and found absolutely nothing of use other than his myspace account and a second track by the mysterious Turk.  This remix of the 1982 dancehall classic by Sister Nancy is also quite cool with it’s Baltimore-style breaks structure and tight samples.  Both tracks have not been released on any label and if anyone happens to find any more information on this guy – please let us all know.  For now, let the mystery sit while you digest these two greasy nugs.
