We’ve had a bit of a siesta since our last post as I’ve been on the slack this summer, but in an effort to rebuild your trust I come to you with two solid nuggets of bass-y disco magic.

Cut one is from Italy’s wax aficionado Simoncino whose zombified disco edit in the OTP Party Breaks series Too Much Party has scored many a sun rise the past couple of months.

Really excited for Benoit & Sergio’s upcoming 12″ slated for release June 20th on the infamous New York electronic disco powerhouse DFA Records. With both tracks sporting super-infectious hooks, innovative arrangements and ultra-thick bass lines nodding at some of Daft Punk’s finest, it’s easy to understand why almost all of the work this duo has produced has gone viral. Most definitely an “exploration of underground pop sensibilities” as suggested by DFA and also a high point in some of the best sets I witnessed on my first trip to DEMF this year (Visionquest, Soul Clap). <3

Omar S and company seem to be telling a never ending technofable with FXHE.  Each track elegantly opens and closes a chapter in the tale creating anticipation and impatience for follow up. Comfort in simplicity is the guiding light through it all.

This most recent effort Sarah packs some sexy high end California OG synth love alongside his signature analog bass stabs and 808 rhythm. The cover art should be a dead giveaway as to where that sample at the beginning is from but I’m at a loss…

Here is the slick new video for Falling; the 2011 single from UK Dubstep pioneer Distance. Alys Be delivers the lyrics which float effortlessly over a bouncy, melodic bass line.  The Distance Falling EP was released about 3 weeks ago on Island records and features a proper remix from Photek as well as a drum and bass remix from Enei.

In case you have any missed Record Store Day guilt, I recon an order of the 12″ (digital) might appease it and it’ll get you a vinyl only “Epic” remix excursion of this track from Scandinavian compatriot Axel Boman. Players seem to be staying up on their Tartelet via FB.

Schwarzschild Solution II: Matter

It was back in 2007 when Burial exploded onto the scene with his critically acclaimed second album Untrue.  I remember there being such a buzz about this new, organic sound as people hyped up the mystery surrounding the anonymous alias.  There was a strong facsination building for this unknown new star in an age saturated with self promoting social media.  After a year of speculation and rumours a South Londoner by the name of William Bevan came forward.  Fast forward 4 years and it is refreshing to find that this artist hasn’t strayed far from his signature sound.  A busy start to 2011 has seen a collab with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and this fresh new solo release Halo. My favourite cut on this diverse 3 track release is NYC as it holds true to that distict Burial vibe with the sad female vocals laced over a a “wooden” percussive broken beat.

This past Wednesday the PnT family hit up good old Wrongbar to check out Toddla T and Untold.  While both producers spun wicked sets, I was rreeeeeaaaaalllly feeling the set of UK producer, DJ and Hemlock Recordings‘ boss Untold.  This guy came at the crowd with some next level catch-you-by-surprise shit.  Real gnarly, novel and interesting bass music that peaked people’s energy in the club – - the whole place went bonkers. What a show.

Listen to Untold’s track Stereo Freeze – - released in late 2010 on R&S Records – - for an example of the hot bass Untold can burn you with.  I am also throwing in a remix of Cassius’ popular track I Love You So by Vancouver dubstep producer Krusha – - which is now about eight months old, but good all the same.  Murder Music.

Holy heater Batman!  A cluster of four brand spanking new tunes from Toronto’s new Deep House / Tech House duo Phantom Ambulance just dropped unexpectedly on the internet today and is sure to stoke the fire inside some of the Deep and Tech lovers out there.  Max The Fax – - who’s earlier work was featured on the blog nearly a year ago – - and Max Lucas make up the young Canadian duo, who have decided to give out three original tracks and one remix for free through their bandcamp page.  While there is a limit on the number of downloads that can be sucked from the Ambulance’s bandcamp, the boys have decided to give us a couple of the 320’s to hand out exclusively to Plugged Not Thugged’s readers.  Drift way into the deep with a remix of The Weekend’s tune What You Need and the awesome original mix of Alemeda Glare.  Bon voyage!

Toronto-based Warrior Music (aka Nathan Panousis) has come out to play in bass crazed Toronto this year after deciding to make the move from his hometown in Edmonton, Alberta in mid-2010.  The promoter, producer and Tokyoh Records owner has been making some serious moves in the East this year, having played a couple of times at Toronto’s coveted Bassmentality jams and making a trip to smoke a show at Ottawa’s Ritual nightclub.  Known for his wonderfully melodic bass music, Warrior continues to sweat it out in the lab daily – - pushing out one heater after another in a fury of production that puts him on par with other local workhorses such as Terror Tone and Barletta – - and from the looks of it, has no plans to stop his rampage anytime soon.  Take cover, bass bombs incoming!!

The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby (Warrior Music Remix)

This is a wicked remix of the Beatle’s classic track Eleanor Rigby. This version has an epic intro that carries the listener into a deadly bass trap which has some serious bite.  This remix of the Beatles’ timeless tune will be a success on any sweat-filled dance floor guaranteed.

A new jam featuring the vocals of Jena Munn – - which will be released on Barletta and Paul David’s label Burner Records in early March.  Big, bad bass that bounces my head across the desk every time I hear it.

Terror Tone ft. Dick Diamonds – Rinse Out (Warrior Music Remix)

This was Warrior’s submission for Terror Tone and I’s (Dick Diamonds) Rinse Out remix competition, which was held at the end of 2010 to determine which remixes would be included in the January 2011 ‘Rinse Out’ release on JEXONEX. This was without a doubt one of our favourite remixes, and while it could well have won a spot on the release, Warrior Music was a tad slow in getting us the final product before the submission.  Luckily, he still managed to break out a sweet remix for us to smash our heads to anyways.

Paradise House (Warrior Music’s “Give Em Bass” Remix)

I am really feeling the Give em Bass remix of Paradise House – - which is filled with wicked piano’s, late-night tech tunage and low-budget instruments that would put my own sticks and triangle to shame.  One more example of how this man can fuse melody with lazer-chainsaw bass lines that could rip the face off of Crystal Lake’s own Jason.

I have been sitting on this little Deep House mix from the UK’s DJ Ryan Good for about a month now, and I think it is about time that it finally gets put up for Plugged Not Thugged readers to sink their teeth into.   The Audio Expressions mix is 57 minutes of deep grooves that will keep your head on straight while riding the bus to work or getting ready for a late night greaser.  Packed with a number of tasty tracks, this mix is a fantastic way to satiate that Deep House hunger.  Dig in, and then go check out Good’s soundcloud page to listen to some of his other mixes and production works in progress.  I am especially feeling his unfinished, yet catchy, Pizzicato.  Cannot wait until it is done so I can freak the fuck out.

It’s the sort of place you can bring both your music friends and your soccer team – we walk the line between what’s fresh + exciting and what’s well-known. White Lions are a Toronto based production outfit that craft lush disco aware house music that doesn’t take itself too seriously and gracefully merges deep, funky and soulful influences.

In the wake of their recent release of De Palma on Toronto’s acclaimed My Favorite Robot Recordings (a label whose roster includes local heavyweights Kenny Glasgow, Jonny White and Nitin as well as the esteemed Michael J Collins), the trio, comprised of Sean Roman, Cody LG and Rob Steal have put together an exceptional mix for our now 8-month running Plugcast series. Packed with exclusive material from the Lions, a track from Sean’s forthcoming release on Top Billin’ and selections from PnT favorites Kerri Chandler, Hot Natured and Storm Queen, at no point does this mix disappoint. Also be sure to keep an ear out for more from White Lions in the coming months on Chicago’s Dust Traxx.

Previously, Sean produced some crazy liquid beat D&B business with clear hip-hop nods under the alias Mutt. Glad he left plenty of room for a sonic shoulder lean. Proper pep in this new step. Roar.
