The C-130 Hercules is converted by Boeing built by Lockheed the AC-130 Gunship a heavy armed ground attack lethal weapon in the U.S. arsenal. The early Gunship of this type was the AC-47 Gunship I used in Vietnam and was very successful. The modern replacement for the old AC-47 is the AC-130U Gunship II by Lockheed and converted to a Gunship by Boeing.

The United States Air Force uses the AC-130H Spectre and AC-130U Spooky exclusively for ground force protection and close air support. When there are planned targets and targets of opportunity the AC-130s are used in air interdiction. The AC-130U home base is in Hurlburt Field, Florida and the AC-130H are based in Cannon AFB, New Mexico. The Gunships deploy to many bases throughout the world to support field operations. AFSOC (Air Force Special Operations Command) a part of the SOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) are in charge of the gunship squadrons.

How The AC-130 Gunship is Used

All the weapons are mounted on the port side of the aircraft (left side). The AC-130 gunship will fly in a large circle in a pylon turn around a target. Keeping guns on target for long periods of time unlike conventional attack aircraft like the A-10 Warthog. The weapons are impressive in an AC-130H Spectre you will find as many as 2 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannons, a 105 M102 cannon and a Bofors 40 mm auto-cannon. Spooky the AC-130U is a little different with a single 25 mm GAU-12 Equalizer with improved fire control and a higher capacity of ammunition. Both variants of the C-130 are powered by 4 Allison T56-A-15 Turboprop engines.

The first AC-130 Gunship was produced in 1967 when a JC-130A USAF 54-1626 was chosen for conversion. Project Gunship II was the project that produced to first AC-130A at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The Aeronautical Systems Division performed the modifications. The first Gunship had Gatling guns installed along the port side and aft facing down and FLIP (forward looking infrared) in the port wheel well. Commander Tom Pinkerton handcrafted the analog fire control system at the USAF Avionics Laboratory at Wright Patterson AFB. After flight testing at Eglin Air Force Base the aircraft was ready for combat testing in 1967. The new gunship was flown to Nha Trang Air Base in Vietnam and was tested in a 90 day program. Project Gunship III was brought in to supplement the AC-130 with the C-119 Flying Boxcar but proved to be underpowered and was scrapped.

By 1968 7 more C-130s were converted to AC-130s but one was considered to be a surprise package. In the surprise package the latest rotary cannons were installed a 20 mm and the Bofors cannon a 40 mm and the 7.62 was left out. The surprise package was the test bed to test different armaments and avionics for the AC-130E.

Later in 1970 the Pave Pronto project was implemented and 10 more AC-130As were added. Older Surprise Package AC-130s received the upgrade to the Pave Pronto setup and all were given a new designation nicknamed “Thor”. Later C-130Es converted in the AC-130E as part of the Pave Spectre project.

AC-130 Gunship Recent Service

War Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm the AC-130 was used for defense of air bases, close air support of ground troops and battlefield interdiction. Early warning ground control intercept were the primary interdiction targets along the southern border of Iraq. In the Battle of Khafji the first AC-130 entered combat to stop the Iraqi armored column in January of 1991. The next day 3 more gunships entered the war and attacked columns trying to reinforce their positions north of the city.

The first AC-130H to be shot down occurred in January of 1991 facing the threat of SAMs AF No. 69-6567 had elected to stay to protect Marines over the target area. Her call sign was Spirit 03 an Iraqi shot down Spirit 03 with a Strela-2 MANPAD and sadly all 14 crew members perished.

AC-130 Gunship Records

Not one but two AC-130U Gunships flew nonstop for 36 straight hours with the help of KC-135 fuel tankers refueling them 7 times between the 22nd through the 24th of October 1997. The flight took them from Hurlburt Air Base, Florida all the way to Taegu Air Base, South Korea. The previous C-130 longest flight was 6 hours less. Just think the AC-130U Gunships only took on 410,000 lbs of fuel to fly the 36 hours. The AC-130 Gunships were addressing buildup of American forces in 1998 trying to get convince Iraq to submit to UN inspections.

For more recent use of the gunships, 2001 Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan and from 2003 to 2010 in Operation Iraqi Freedom and in Somalia in 2007 on al-Qaeda militants. The sophisticated video, infrared and radar sensors proved to be excellent for intelligence gathering missions.

As of July 2010 there are eight AC130H Gunships and 17 AC-130U Gunships still on active duty. The Air Force sent 2 AC-130U Gunships to take part in Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya March 2011.

Of course everyone must now know that Rockwell became part of Boeing but the B-1 Lancer was the brain child of Rockwell. The Lancer was designed in the 60s to be a supersonic bomber to carry the payload of a B-52. She was to deliver at supersonic speed at high altitude long range bombing missions.

The B-1 Lancer Was Off to a Rocky Start

This was caused by all the delays in development over the years. The delays had to do with the changes in the theory of strategic balance in the world. First it was MAD (mutually assured destruction) the perfect acronym. Then the powers that be came to their senses and changed it back again. So the first B-1A never got off the drawing board until the early 70s. They built four prototypes only to have the production canceled. The B-1 seemingly forgotten came back to life again in the 80s. A new B-1B version of the bomber was built with the idea of (low level penetration bombing) in mind. The first B-1B lancer built for the Strategic Air Command of the USAF entered service in 1986 as the USAF nuclear bomber.

Later in the early 90s the Lancer began being used for conventional bombing. Her first combat service was seen in Operation (Desert Fox) then again as part of the NATO action in Kosovo. The B-1B Lancer today is getting heavy use in Afghanistan and formerly Iraq for both the U.S. and NATO. She is still the soul supersonic long range bomber of the USAF. The other two long range bombers the B-2 Spirit and the well known B-52 are subsonic.

The B-1B Lancer is referred to as the Bone short for B-One. The USAF retired the F-111 Raven in 98 and later the F-14 Tomcat in 06 making the B-1B the only supersonic variable sweep wing bomber. She is very likely to see many more years of service and will support the next generation of bomber as well.

More B-1B Lancer Background

In 1957 the B-70 Valkyrie was to replace the Boeing B-52s. The idea was that the Valkyrie was designed to fly at speeds of Mach 3 over 70,000 ft. It was a great idea to be able to stay away from interceptor enemy aircraft. At the time the Lockheed U-2 was avoiding the Soviet interceptors. But the plans changed when Gary Power’s was shot down with the new SAMs the (surface-to-air missiles).

The USAF strategy changed to low-level penetration with the idea that surface-to-air missiles were not effective at low altitude aircraft. The strategy also proved to be effective against the enemy high flying interceptors. Their radar picked up too much clutter from the ground to detect low flying aircraft.

Flying the B-70 at low altitudes meant subsonic speeds. This also proved to decrease range leaving the older B-52 as the better choice. At the time the threat was from ICBMs so President Kennedy canceled the B-70 program in 1961. There were two prototypes built of the B-70 called XB-70s that were only used for supersonic research.

The Stealth Bomber or Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit built to deploy nuclear and conventional weapons without being detected making use of stealth technology. The Stealth Bomber carries an impressive payload commanded by a crew of two. Its payload can consist of up to 80 500 lb JDAM GPS guided bombs. The B-2 can carry 16 B83 nuclear bombs that weigh 2,400 lbs each.

Back during the days of the Carter administration development began under the ATB project or (Advanced Technology Bomber). The performance of the B-2 was used as a reason to cancel the B-1 Lancer. Later under the Reagan administration delays restarted the B-1 program.

The B-2 was designed to penetrate Soviet airspace by stealth to attack high value targets. Once the perception of the cold war eased the need for the new bomber was reduced. The cost of the new bombers with operational costs was controversial with the Joint Chiefs and the U.S. Congress. Congress chopped the B-2 budget of 132 Stealth Bombers to just 21 in the late 80s and early 90s. Today we have 20 B-2 Stealth Bombers still in service by the United States Air Force. One incident occurred in 2008 when a B-2 crashed on takeoff in which the crew survived but the bomber was totally destroyed.

B-2 Stealth Was Designed as a Nuclear Bomber

The B-2 was designed to deliver nuclear bombs. The Stealth Bomber was called into service to drop conventional bombs on Serbia in 1999. Then later the B-2 was used in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. And the latest service was in 2011 to deal with the Libyan uprising.

The B-2 Stealth Bomber came about in the mid 70s in a search to replace the B-52. The B-70 and B-1A were canceled because they were vulnerable to the SAMs (surface-to-air missiles). The B-1 was very fast so they came up with idea it could be flown close to ground and avoid the SAMs. But the idea was countered with modern look-down/shoot-down interceptors.

More work in the area of technology progressed so the idea was to find ways to avoid missiles all together. So the new buzz word was introduced, “Stealth” or stealth technology was build an aircraft that would invisible to the enemy tracking systems. The thought was to make the stealth aircraft absorb or deflect the tracking radar signals just enough to fly in and fly out without being detected by the enemy. Since they can’t make the aircraft invisible they must fly at night because they still can’t evade the human observers.

The world’s first introduction to the first B-2 was in November of 1988 in Palmdale, California. Still Top Secret guests were not allowed to see the rear of the aircraft. So the viewing was heavily guarded. But there were no bans on flying over airfield where the presentation was set up. So Aviation Week flew over and took all the pictures of the secret suppressed engine exhausts they wanted. The first B-2 public flight was in July or 1989 in Palmdale.

The B-2 Stealth Bomber still has many Top Secret characteristics surrounding its stealth abilities. The Stealth Bomber can penetrate the most sophisticated defenses to attack well guarded targets. Some of the reasons it is so hard to track are because of its reduced acoustic and radar signatures many of which are classified. The composite materials used in its flying wing design and special coatings create the characteristics of its stealth capabilities.

The advantages of the B-2 Stealth Bomber are significant as compared to previous bombers. Stealth technologies, aerodynamic efficiency and the ability to carry large payloads up to 6,000 nautical miles at high altitudes all serve to increase its abilities. Aerial refueling greatly extends the range of the B-2 past 6,000 miles which can support intercontinental missions.

The B-2 christened the Spirit of Missouri was the first operational aircraft delivered in December of 1993. The B-2 Stealth Bomber reached IOC (operational capability) in January of 1997.

For more than 3 grueling year’s courageous air crews of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress attacked strategic targets. The B-17 was one of the most popular bombers with the American public. The Boeing B-17 developed for the United States Army Air Corps was a 4 engine bomber. Boeing competing against Martin and Douglas in the 1930s for a contract to build 200 bombers, their entry more than outperformed both the competitors. At first Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed. But the brass was so impressed with the design that the U.S. Army Air Corps ordered 13 of the B-17s. So successful the B-17 Flying Fortress went on to be the first mass-produced large aircraft in full-scale production.

The United States Army Air Forces employed the B-17 primarily in daylight precision strategic bombing campaign against the German Industrial and military targets. The 8th Army Air Corps based in England and the 15th Air Force was based in Italy served to complement the RAF Bomber command’s nighttime operation called “Operation Pointblank”. This was one of the first big steps in securing air superiority over the battlefields of Western Europe.

The B-17 served some in the War in the Pacific in raids against the Japanese airfields and shipping.

These stories took on great mythic proportions and many photos were taken and circulated raising its iconic status. Airfix model kits are manufactured by a UK manufacturer of plastic scale model airplanes war-birds and commercial airliners. The name “Airfix Kit” has gained such popularity that a scale model airplane of another manufacture is referred to as an “Airfix Kit”. In Great Britain, the name Airfix and hobby kind of go together.

Airfix has quite a history founded in 1939 by Nicholas Kove a Hungarian businessman, today Airfix is owned by Hornby since 2007. The name Airfix was chosen so it would be first in any toy catalogue. Plastic models began with their first injection molding being plastic combs. Their first model started in 1949 with a promotional model of the Ferguson Tractor. The first distribution was via Ferguson sales and later sold in kit form via F.W. Woolworth’s stores.

One of the buyers from the Woolworth team a Jim Russon ask Airfix to manufacture a model of the Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hine. Later they would sell them in America as the famous “Ship in a Bottle”.

1955 Airfix manufactured the Supermarine Spitfire their very first airplane model. Hardheaded Kove would not buy into the idea that the product would sell. So he raved and ranted that he would bill the designers for the retooling.

In the 60s and 70s modeling grew leaps and bounds that pushed Airfix into a number of different areas of modeling. That included everything from vintage model cars, motorcycles, model ship kits, war-birds, rockets and spaceships.

Consolidated B-24 Liberator

There were more Consolidated B-24 “Liberators” built during World War II than any other American aircraft. The B-24 never caught on with the public like the “Flying Fortress” B-17s did. The B-24 Liberator was well liked by all it crews.

The concept was much more modern than the B-17. The Liberators carried a 4 gun forward turret to meet oncoming fighters. She had the newly invented Davis wing than had a long width-to-chord ratio giving the Liberator superior range.

The B-24s were the first aircraft to make North Atlantic crossings everyday routine. The Liberators made hundreds of attacks on targets that could not be reached by any other aircraft until the B-29 became available.

A heavy bomber was its primary duty she was also a very deadly fighter. The B-24 Liberator was most effective as Allied oceanic patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. It also proved to be very useful as long range cargo transport for the Allies.

It was used by many of the Allied air forces and every U.S. branch of service during the war. It attained a distinguished war record with its operations in northern Europe, Pacific and the Mediterranean Theaters.

A contract for a prototype was awarded in March 1939, with the requirement that a prototype be ready before the end of the year. The Consolidated design used twin-row, 14-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radials of 1,000 hp. At 70,547 lbs maximum takeoff weight was one of the highest of the period.

Consolidated also incorporated innovative features; the new design would be the first American bomber to use tricycle landing gear and it had the new efficient "Davis" high aspect ratio wing design promising to provide maximum fuel efficiency. The aircraft also had the distinctive twin tail and rudder.

Consolidated finished the prototype, known as the XB-24, and just made the deadline for its first flight two days before the end of 1939. Most of the first production B-24s went to Britain. The name, "Liberator" was initially assigned by the RAF and was adopted by the USAAC as the official name for the B-24.

The B-24's had a very spacious slab-sided fuselage. This earned the aircraft the nickname "Flying Boxcar". It was built around a central bomb bay that could accommodate up to 8,000 lb of bombs. The bomb bay was divided into front and rear compartments and divided by a central catwalk, which was also the fuselage keel beam. An unusual set of "roller-type" bomb bay doors retracted into the fuselage with a minimum of aerodynamic drag, keeping speed high over the target area. It also had an array of .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns in the tail, belly, top, sides and nose to defend it from enemy fighters. It also had a unique ball turret that could be retracted into the fuselage when not in use.

The C-47 Skytrain produced by The Douglas Aircraft Company referred to as the Dakota was developed from the Douglas DC-3 Airliner. The C-47 Skytrain or Dakota primary use was for military transport aircraft. The C-47 was used extensively by the U.S. and the Allies during World War II. The C-47 Skytrain maintained frontline operations into the 50s and some are still in service to this very day.

Many modifications brought the C-47 up to the specification for military service. Major updates included a large cargo door and a strengthened floor to support heavy cargo.

Many different countries made use of the C-47 and DC-3s converted for troop transport and cargo. 10,000 of the aircraft were built in 2 locations in California, Long Beach and Santa Monica. C-47s were also built in Oklahoma and the plant put out 5,354 aircraft between March of 43 and August of 45.

C-47 Skytrain Airworthiness

Douglas responded to the airworthiness requirements that limited the use of the surplus C-47 Skytrain for commercial use. By the late 1940s Douglas offered a conversion to modify the aircraft to meet the new aircraft regulations. Single engine performance was updated along with much improved takeoff with increased speed. What came out of the modifications was almost a completely new aircraft designated as the DC-3S or Super DC-3. The modifications made it 39” longer with a new swept back wing with larger tail surfaces allowed 30 passengers to be carried. Engine upgrades to the Wright R-1820 Cyclones rated at 1,475 hp or the Pratt & Whitney R-2000 rated at 2,000 hp. The new more powerful engines required larger nacelles. Other changes included wheel well doors and the tail wheel even retracted partially. Flush rivets and antennas with much lower drag and more powerful engines boosted the top speed to 250 mph.

The modifications amounted to almost 75% of the original C-47/DC-3 being changed out. The changes made almost a completely new aircraft. The maiden flight of the first DC-3S occurred in June of 1949. The modifications proved to be too costly for the target small operators and only three were purchased by Capital Airlines. The U.S. Navy had 100 of its R4D aircraft modified to the DC-3S specifications. Designated the R4D-8 and later renamed the C-117D.

C-47 Skytrain Operational History

The overall successes of many of the Allied campaigns were due to the C-47. The Naval version the R4D gave the Allied troops the ability to counter the Japanese army’s mobility. Other successful campaigns were Guadalcanal, New Guinea and Burma. Another success was the airlift of supplies to American forces in the Battle of Bastogne. Flying the Hump was a very influential role of military aviation. Flying the Hump India to China was a lesson later applied to the Berlin Airlift until the C-47 Skytrain was replaced by the C-54.

The C-53 Skytrooper was a variant of the C-47 used to tow Waco CG-4A gliders and carry and drop paratroops. With the help of Army engineers and Seabees construction of landing strips on small islands of the South Pacific C-47s ferried soldiers serving in the Pacific Theater.

The C-47 nickname Dakota came from the British Commonwealth. The acronym (DACoTA) was taken from the Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft. The C-47 also earned another nickname in the European Theater, the (Gooney Bird).

The C-47 Skytrain was in continuous service with the USAF Strategic Air Command from 1946 up through 1967.

The Pakistan Army was supplied by the Pakistan Air Force flying C-47 cargo planes while fighting the Indo-Pakistan War against India in 1947.

The United States Air Force used a number of C-47 Variations in the Vietnam War. A few called the Electric Gooney carried advanced electronic warfare equipment carried designations EC-47N, EC-47P and EC-47Q based on the type of engines used on the aircraft. The AC-47 Spooky admired by American Troops on the ground got the nickname of (Puff The Magic Dragon). A very powerful gunship would fly by and open up firing 3 7.62 mm mini-guns and after a few short puffs of smoke the enemy would stop shooting back like magic.

From the 40s through the 80s the Royal Canadian Air Force used C-47s for radar training, search and rescue and navigation and transportation.

To this very day many C-47s still fly for civilian use some have exceptional upgrades to modern fuel efficient turboprop engines. After World War II there were many surplus C-47s converted to civil airline use. There is a warbird museum in Titusville, Florida that maintains a C-47 Skytrain that still flies in its original World War II colors in air shows and provides rides for spectators.

Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar

With exceptional cargo hauling ability and rather unusual appearance the C-119 earned the name “Flying Boxcar”. The C-82 Packet was built for the Air Force Tactical Air Command and had some serious problems in its 9 years of service. So the C-119 was built to address all of the C-82 Packet problems.

The first C-119 was constructed with a much more ridged airframe that was much stronger. The first prototype rolled out in November of 1947 as the XC-82B.

Later Henry J. Kaiser received the contract to build C-119s at the former B-24 Liberator plant in Belleville, Michigan. Kaiser would build the C-119F model that differed in that it had Wright R-3350-85 Duplex Cyclone engines. Fairchild use Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines. The Wright engine was used on the B-29 and was a reliable design but it did not have the superchargers Like the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engines. The C-119 performance was almost identical in both versions.

C-119 Flying Boxcar Variants

Two variants of the C-119 were converted into potent weapons the AC-119G Shadow and the AC-119K Stinger. The AC-119G had 4 six barrel 7.62 mini-guns installed with added armor plating, flares, and night flying infrared equipment. The AC-119K Stinger got more potent upgrades with two 20 mm cannons and two GE J85-GE-17 turbojets adding an extra 6,000 lbf of thrust. Two other variants were built the EC-119J for satellite tracking and another prototype with larger wings and tail called the YC-119H.

Another modification was made for civilian use, featured Westinghouse J34 turbojet with an extra 3,400 lbf of thrust. A nacelle was installed above the fuselage in a Jet Pack configuration.

C-119 Flying Boxcar Military Service

The C-119 with the 314th Troop Carrier Group in 1950 served in the Korea War. C-119C including F and G models served in Europe with the U.S. Air Force and the Far East Air Force from 1951 through 1962. The 150 or so aircraft operated from Greenland all the way to India. Another group of as many operated and served in the Pacific and Far East.

C-119 Flying Boxcars saw service with the USAF Strategic Air Command from 1955 all the way to 1973.

For some of the more interesting service for the C-119s was the aerial recovery of some of the high altitude instrument packages carried by balloon. Based in Hawaii some of the aerial recoveries included the Corona Spy Satellite Program. A C-119 had the first successful recovery of film from a spy satellite in August of 1960.

The C-119s saw extensive service in Vietnam that started in 1953 with aircraft that were on loan by the CIA to support French troops. The Boxcars were flown by America CIA pilots with French markings on the planes.

The Indian Government bought C-119s with approval of President Kennedy to be used in the Sine-Indian War of 1962. The C-119s got extensive use to supply the Indian forces.

All the C-119s that were modified to the AC-119G Shadows and AC119K Stingers were transferred to the South Vietnamese when the war ended for the Americans in 1973.

Developed by Fairchild from the previous C-82 Packet, the C-119 was one of the most important transport planes of the Fifties. The C-119C model had two 28 cylinder Pratt&Whitney four row radial R-4360 engines and it was distinguished from later types partly by its single wheel front undercarriage and different tail design. Production of the C-119C was speeded up when the Korean War broke out and these planes were soon being used for most of its transport missions. At the end of the war, a large number of the planes were supplied to the French, who used them widely in Indochina. Another less well-known but equally important role they played was to transport material for the construction of the DEW line radar stations in the far north of the American continent. Many examples of the C-119C were subsequently updated to meet the standards of later models.

The Fairchild AC-119G Shadow and AC-119K Stinger were twin-engine piston-powered gunships developed by the United States during the Vietnam War. They replaced the inadequate AC-47 Spooky and operated alongside the early versions of the AC-130 Spectre gunship. By late 1967, the idea of the fixed-wing gunship had been proven so successful that the United States Air Force was having a difficult time keeping up with demand. The newer AC-130s that had been created under Project Gunship II were effective, but were being mostly used for interdiction of the Ho Chi Minh trail. Furthermore, the C-130 airframe was in active service as a transport, vital to the war effort in Southeast Asia. The Air Force desperately needed a new gunship to replace the vulnerable and underpowered AC-47 in the close air support role (CAS), as well as supplementing the AC-130 in attacking targets on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The C-119 Flying Boxcar presented an obvious choice, having been phased out of frontline service in favor of the C-123 and C-130, and with the stock of available airframes in U.S. Air Force Reserve being sufficient. In February 1968, under the USAF program Project Gunship III, 26 C-119Gs were converted to AC-119G standard, initially taking on the name "Creep," but later assigned the callsign "Shadow."[1] These aircraft were primarily intended to replace the AC-47 in the CAS role. In addition, Fairchild-Hiller, which was contracted for all the conversions, converted another 26 C-119Gs into AC-119Ks primarily for the "truck hunter" role over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. These aircraft were called "Stingers" primarily in reference to the two M61 Vulcan 20 mm cannons they carried in addition to the AC-119G's four GAU-2/A miniguns. The AC-119K could be visually distinguished by the addition of two General Electric J85 turbojet engines in underwing pods. The conversions were completed at Fairchild-Hiller's facility in St. Augustine, Florida.
