When I loaded it up to watch, I had great trepidation about it. Why? Let’s look at what we have dealt with in the past:

• Bridezillas – No.
• My Big Redneck Wedding – That will be a Hard No.
• Say Yes to the Dress – Good show.
• Four Wedding – Eh.
• Big Fat Gypsy Wedding – Can you see my face right now?
• Platinum Weddings – Ahhh, watching the Rich and Famous
• Engaged and Underaged – What the hell?
• Rich Bride, Poor Bride – Now we’re just getting stupid.
• Amazing Wedding Cakes – YES!!!!
• Don’t Tell the Bride – Didn’t care for it.
• My Fair Wedding with David Tutera – That went 7 seasons too long (there were 8 total)
• Married at First Sight – Never watched it.
• The Big Day – Never watched it.
• Note: You can rank some of these shows here, whether you like it or not.

So you can understand that I was really worried about Marriage vs Mortgage – but I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised! Let’s discuss.

positive takeaways from the show

• The show was based in Nashville, Tennessee. I am THRILLED they picked a Midwest/Southern city instead of a city on the coast. We do fabulous weddings and events here too! Although that really wasn’t the point of the show, in fact, it’s more about staying within your budget. I’m just glad we got to be represented. Although don’t get it twisted, weddings and mortgages are expensive in Franklin, Brentwood, or Nashville.
• The wedding planner Sarah Miller that they used is absolutely lovely. And by lovely I mean, she’s sincere, passionate, and clearly professional. Sometimes some of these shows depict the planners as crazy, loud, and wild. Sarah is none of these things.
• The chemistry between Sarah and the realtor, Nichole Holmes is good. Yes, they are competitive but it’s not nasty. Although it was fun to watch some side glances as the show progresses, it’s all in good fun.
• You should know that this is a reality show so it is edited for consumption, but what you see is the reality. Sarah and Nichole did not know the couples in advance and were given a bio about them. Then they have one meeting with the couple, one day to shoot (respectively) with the couple, and the final meeting where they would present all the extras (I’ll get into that below) for the couple would decide. You can listen to Sarah talk about it at this interview on a podcast.

a few concerns about the show

• These are my concerns about this show and actually, ANY REALITY TV show about weddings. Sarah pulled out the stops and would get extras with deep discounts from other wedding pros and in some instances, items for FREE to sweeten the idea of going with the wedding vs the mortgage. Yeah, this doesn’t happen in the real world. As a wedding planner, I can’t get you 50% off of a wedding dress from a boutique. But, if you are on a reality TV show on Netflix, then hmmm, yeah that boutique might discount heavily. I feel strongly like it’s going backward and not having the public understand how this works. And what planners can actually do for you?
• Nichole did the same thing, getting some freebies. But real estate is absolutely all about negotiation. You expect it. You want it. It’s not necessarily the same thing for weddings. Wedding pros can’t discount like that normally. So I believe it’s not a fair comparison.
• Finally, it’s creating a clear divide that couples have to choose whether they get a wedding or a new home. For many people, this is probably the reality, they are making a choice between marriage or mortgage, thanks Netflix. But there are also a lot of couples who have both. About 35% of my clients are either building or purchasing a home while planning their wedding.

Weddings win 6-4. Having a wedding is all about creating or starting the foundation of your marriage with your partner in front of your family and friends. You have one chance to share and enjoy all these feelings of joy and excitement. A house is important, but you may have many houses in your lifetime, you hopefully only have one wedding.

Another wonderful wedding and actually the LAST wedding we planned before the Covid-19 2020 Pandemic stopped the world. It was late in the year, the last Saturday in December 2019 actually, so we didn’t decorate the church as it already was beautiful from Christmas.

Designing this wedding with the clients and the florist was a breeze! To be extra creative we sewed and created the little cap on the ends of the banquet tables so it would match the sweetheart table with the grass wall backdrop. Clients purchased The Millers bar sign and now it hangs in their home, in the man cave.

A whiskey barrel top as a guest book and individual BBQ sauce wedding favors for the guests. The couple did not want a wedding cake, instead purchased all kinds of desserts for the guests to select. They didn’t even cut a cake, it wasn’t important to them.

Later in the evening, Michaela changed into a white jumpsuit and wore a cute denim jacket that said Mrs. Miller on the back. I mean, how CUTE is that? Note: photos below of the jacket are from my iPhone.

This wedding is all about the love between a couple and two wonderful families. Courtney loved pretty things, however was also finishing school and didn’t have the time for wedding planning. Also, she’s a pretty cool chick and wasn’t going to sweat the small stuff.

As it happened, and this seems to be a trend with me, Courtney reached out a full year before she hired us, and she wasn’t even technically “engaged yet”. I miss planning with them in her mom’s kitchen or client meetings at a Mexican restaurant. The couple and family are such wonderful people inside and out, and I’m so blessed to be able to have these types of clients.

What I loved most about designing this wedding were the colors. Using both ivory with a cranberry punch! Look how beautiful it turned out!

Planning weddings at venues like Rolling Hills Country Club it’s easy to design gorgeous and lush aesthetic rooms. After they remodeled, the ballroom is so beautiful and the outdoor space for a wedding ceremony, simply breathtaking.

These clients. I know, I’ve said it 200 times before, but this wedding was one hundred percent legit. This couple smiled the entire day. There were only two photos taken of them not smiling and that is probably because Jesse and Gena told them to be “serious”. The joy they shared with each other and their whole crew was nothing less than fantastic.

And that room … oh em gee … we outdid ourselves on the design of the whole aesthetic and florals. Yes, this was one of those weddings we dug into and painstakingly planned every single detail and design. Sometimes it’s okay to look at something and say, “well done”! And this was one of those times. And so happy the mother of the bride said, “well done!”

Ghost chairs are amazing especially when we added the monogram logo to it that also matched the custom stationery. It’s so important to make sure that the wedding design that you plan flows through the entire event.

Tropicana Evansville has turned their giant building that used to be the entrance and Hoosier Lounge to the casino boat into an event facility! It’s brilliant! Huge windows and a beautiful stationary bar.

And this was perfect for a place to have their celebration. When I met with the bride, she wasn’t even “technically” engaged yet, but it was coming in a few months. She wasn’t sure if she should have a wedding here in Evansville (where she grew up) or have it in Florida where they lived.

Luckily, for their guests, they chose Evansville and Tropicana Event Center. A sweet church wedding and then off to jam and party down!

Fun facts: Devin loves color and wanted a cool, carnival-themed type wedding, the florist that I recommended for her to implement our designs was actually the same florist that made her mother’s bouquet when she got married (I didn’t know!), she loved balloons, the family made all of the vases that held the gagillion amount of flowers and I had the wedding cake as the centerpiece on the estate table. So much fun!

Two years. TWO YEARS, we planned with this sweet bride. What do you expect when you have a 450 guest New Year’s Eve wedding? Discover Lodge said it was one of the biggest weddings they have had there!

Jenna is a force to be reckoned with, a moving train that knows exactly what she wants, and we love it! There were SO many elements of this wedding and it was worth the long hours of planning. My only wish, that we were actually GUESTS at the wedding because it was an epic party!

Have you ever been around someone that makes you smile and their spirit is infectious in the best way possible? That is Khristian!

She was a joy to plan with and could not wait to marry her best friend. Their wedding was beautiful, personal, and full of love. You had to just be there to experience the atmosphere in the air. They held their wedding ceremony inside the ballroom at Cambridge Golf Course, then we flipped the room for the reception, which is part of the services that we can provide. Both basketball coaches invited their students to attend and the bride wore white Converse Chucks! LOVE!

Favorite part? She did a first peek with her Dad AND her future Father in Law. I mean, seriously. How sweet is that?

This is an amazing backdrop for your wedding photos, it doesn’t even look like Southern Indiana!

The word that comes to mind about this couple is “wonderful”. Both busy medical professionals didn’t have the time to commit to planning. We laughed so hard during the months planning their celebration.

Brandon is a character who constantly kept us in stitches. Their attention to detail and wanting their guests to truly be part of and enjoy their wedding day was outstanding. We loved, that Christina loved, COLOR! It was truly a pleasure working with them and designing this powerful, wedding palette.

This was the third and final wedding that we managed for this three-sister family. It was so great to be a part of this wonderful family’s celebrations. Lauren was the most modern of the girls and loved pastel, but wanted lavender when blush weddings were in style. Greenery, asymmetrical custom designs made this wedding fun and reflective of this awesome couple.
