Question of the week: My Rena air pump seems to get very hot while running. What causes this?

Answer: Pumps run hotter when they are working very hard to pump air. In most cases if you are getting good air flow the problem is either a clogged air stone/diffuser or hose restriction. To troubleshoot the problem check your tubing for any restrictions, inspect your air stone or anything attached to your pump to make sure they are not restricting air flow. If all of this looks good I would also check on the inside of your pump to make sure all the inner parts are funtioning properly. If your pump
is more than
a year old you might consider replacing the diaphragm and valve block.

Jun 26, Question of the Week: Q. Does the tubing 841619-00 also fit the xp2 rena filstar?

Q: Does the tubing 841619-00 also fit thr xp2 rena filstar?

A: This question may seem trivial but it is important because it allows me to elaborate on just how many of the parts are interchangeable in the Rena XP Filstar Canister Filter Range. The short answer is yes the tubing that comes with any Rena XP Filstar Filter will fit all the other filters in the range. This includes XP1, XP2, XP3 and XP4. The only difference between filters is the length of the tubing. The XP1, XP2 and XP3 all have two pieces of tubing that are 5 feet in length. The XP4 has tubing
that is 6.5 ft in length. The diameter is the same for all filters and equals about 5/8 inch ( metric is 21mm x 26mm). The inlet and outlet accessories are also identical which makes it easy to upgrade to a new filter if needed without completely tearing down the aquarium.

Jun 19, Question Of The Week-Q:After I clean and do maintenance on my Rena Filstar Filter I get very small bubbles coming from the outlet. How do I stop this?

Q:After I clean and do maintenance on my Rena Filstar Filter I get very small bubbles coming from the outlet. How do I stop this?

A: Small air bubbles, grinding sounds from the motor, vibration are all signs that the pump is not receiving enough water to pump efficiently. Sometimes this is called cavitating. If this condition continues you will eventually ruin the rotor/impeller or worse case burn up the motor and rotor/impeller. This symptom and possible solutions are covered in the FAQ section at PlanetRena.com.
You can also find information about this at the Mars Fishcare web site under the Rena section.

Jun 12, I was sold a water pump for my pond that had a filter included. How come my pond is not clear?

Q: I was sold a water pump for my pond that had a filter included. How come my pond is not clear?

A: Unless the product you bought was a pond filter that had a pump included you will most likely need a separate pond filter for your pond if you want a clear pond and healthy environment for your plants and fish. Most filters included with water pumps or pond pumps are pump "pre-filters" designed to keep your pump intake from clogging and not a pond filter to keep your pond clear. To view examples of separate pond
filters click here.

A: I can only guess since we have no idea what the water quality is like. So I urge you to visit our Classroom at Frog Pond Aquatics as there is a very timely article on this very subject.
