Don’t feel like getting tied up with a contract? You could always buy it outright for $449.99 and space it out over 20 months with one of T-Mobile’s Even More Plus plans.

Yep – we know what you are thinking. “For $200, I would rather go buy a Droid!” We’ve got a couple of bullet points to share with you before you make any hasty decisions.

The Droid is $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate that comes in the form of a debit card. The Behold II can be stretched out for $22.50 a month.

Verizon offers the biggest, baddest data network while T-Mobile has been playing catch up. That could/should change before long though.

T-Mobile offers no-contract plans and some of the lowest monthly rates while Verizon offers, well… neither.

T-Mobile has offered Android for over a year and has three other handsets to choose from if the Behold II is not your cup of tea. Verizon has an entire line of Android phones coming under the DROID umbrella. Unfortunately, they only have one other model to pick from – DROID Eris by HTC.

Your turn to sound off. Which are you looking forward to getting and why?

The Android-based picture frame has a dedicated email address so it’s easy to send pics to it while on the go with your phone. This is where similarities to a T-Mobile Cameo end. One can also send pictures via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB or an SD card. Oh, it can also pull pictures from Picasa, Flickr and more!

The Parrot says it can support up to 1,500 pictures displaying them on a high resolution LCD color screen with 720×480 pixels. The display also doubles s a mirror when not is use. Looking very polished and finished frome every angle, this is one sytlish photo frame. Of course this style comes at a price – this unit will set you back $650.00! A formal announcement is expected on November 17th.

I’m now accepting stocking stuffers, so feel free.

Integrating Application with Intents

Written in collaboration with Michael Burton, Mob.ly; Ivan Mitrovic, uLocate; and Josh Garnier, OpenTable.

OpenTable, uLocate, and Mob.ly worked together to create a great user experience on Android. We saw an opportunity to enable WHERE and GoodFood users to make reservations on OpenTable easily and seamlessly. This is a situation where everyone wins — OpenTable gets more traffic, WHERE and GoodFood gain functionality to make their applications stickier, and users benefit because they can make reservations with only a few taps of a finger. We were able to achieve this deep integration between our applications by using Android's Intent mechanism. Intents are perhaps one of Android's coolest, most unique, and under-appreciated features. Here's how we exploited them to compose a new user experience from parts each of us have.

Designing

One of the first steps is to design your Intent interface, or API. The main public Intent that OpenTable exposes is the RESERVE Intent, which lets you make a reservation at a specific restaurant and optionally specify the date, time, and party size.

Hereʼs an example of how to make a reservation using the RESERVE Intent:

startActivity(new Intent("com.opentable.action.RESERVE",
       Uri.parse("reserve://opentable.com/2947?partySize=3")));

Our objective was to make it simple and clear to the developer using the Intent. So how did we decide what it would look like?

First, we needed an Action. We considered using Intent.ACTION_VIEW, but decided this didn't map well to making a reservation, so we made up a new action. Following the conventions of the Android platform (roughly <package-name>.action.<action-name>), we chose "com.opentable.action.RESERVE". Actions really are just strings, so it's important to namespace them. Not all applications will need to define their own actions. In fact, common actions such as Intent.ACTION_VIEW (aka "android.intent.action.VIEW") are often a better choice if youʼre not doing something unusual.

Next we needed to determine how data would be sent in our Intent. We decided to have the data encoded in a URI, although you might choose to receive your data as a collection of items in the Intent's data Bundle. We used a scheme of "reserve:" to be consistent with our action. We then put our domain authority and the restaurant ID into the URI path since it was required, and we shunted off all of the other, optional inputs to URI query parameters.

Exposing

Once we knew what we wanted the Intent to look like, we needed to register the Intent with the system so Android would know to start up the OpenTable application. This is done by inserting an Intent filter into the appropriate Activity declaration in AndroidManifest.xml:

<activity android:name=".activity.Splash" ... >
...
  <intent-filter>
    <action android:name="com.opentable.action.RESERVE"/>
    <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
    <data android:scheme="reserve" android:host="opentable.com"/>
  </intent-filter>
...
</activity>

In our case, we wanted users to see a brief OpenTable splash screen as we loaded up details about their restaurant selection, so we put the Intent Filter in the splash Activity definition. We set our category to be DEFAULT. This will ensure our application is launched without asking the user what application to use, as long as no other Activities also list themselves as default for this action.

Notice that things like the URI query parameter ("partySize" in our example) are not specified by the Intent filter. This is why documentation is key when defining your Intents, which weʼll talk about a bit later.

Processing

Now the only thing left to do was write the code to handle the intent.

    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
       super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
       final Uri uri;
       final int restaurantId;
       try {
           uri = getIntent().getData();
           restaurantId = Integer.parseInt( uri.getPathSegments().get(0));
       } catch(Exception e) {
           // Restaurant ID is required
           Log.e(e);
           startActivity( FindTable.start(FindTablePublic.this));
           finish();
           return;
       }
       final String partySize = uri.getQueryParameter("partySize");
       ...
   }

Although this is not quite all the code, you get the idea. The hardest part here was the error handling. OpenTable wanted to be able to gracefully handle erroneous Intents that might be sent by partner applications, so if we have any problem parsing the restaurant ID, we pass the user off to another Activity where they can find the restaurant manually. It's important to verify the input just as you would in a desktop or web application to protect against injection attacks that might harm your app or your users.

Calling and Handling Uncertainty with Grace

Actually invoking the target application from within the requester is quite straight-forward, but there are a few cases we need to handle. What if OpenTable isn't installed? What if WHERE or GoodFood doesn't know the restaurant ID?

Restaurant ID known

Restaurant ID unknown

User has OpenTable

Call OpenTable Intent

Don't show reserve button

User doesn't have OpenTable

Call Market Intent

Don't show reserve button

You'll probably wish to work with your partner to decide exactly what to do if the user doesn't have the target application installed. In this case, we decided we would take the user to Android Market to download OpenTable if s/he wished to do so.

    public void showReserveButton() {

       // setup the Intent to call OpenTable
       Uri reserveUri = Uri.parse(String.format( "reserve://opentable.com/%s?refId=5449",
               opentableId));
       Intent opentableIntent = new Intent("com.opentable.action.RESERVE", reserveUri);

       // setup the Intent to deep link into Android Market
       Uri marketUri = Uri.parse("market://search?q=pname:com.opentable");
       Intent marketIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW).setData(marketUri);

       opentableButton.setVisibility(opentableId > 0 ? View.VISIBLE : View.GONE);
       opentableButton.setOnClickListener(new Button.OnClickListener() {
           public void onClick(View v) {
               PackageManager pm = getPackageManager();
               startActivity(pm.queryIntentActivities(opentableIntent, 0).size() == 0  ?
                       opentableIntent : marketIntent);
           }
       });
   }

In the case where the ID for the restaurant is unavailable, whether because they don't take reservations or they aren't part of the OpenTable network, we simply hide the reserve button.

Publishing the Intent Specification

Now that all the technical work is done, how can you get other developers to use your Intent-based API besides 1:1 outreach? The answer is simple: publish documentation on your website. This makes it more likely that other applications will link to your functionality and also makes your application available to a wider community than you might otherwise reach.

If there's an application that you'd like to tap into that doesn't have any published information, try contacting the developer. It's often in their best interest to encourage third parties to use their APIs, and if they already have an API sitting around, it might be simple to get you the documentation for it.

Summary

It's really just this simple. Now when any of us is in a new city or just around the neighborhood its easy to check which place is the new hot spot and immediately grab an available table. Its great to not need to find a restaurant in one application, launch OpenTable to see if there's a table, find out there isn't, launch the first application again, and on and on. We hope you'll find this write-up useful as you develop your own public intents and that you'll consider sharing them with the greater Android community.

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PlanetAndroidCom/~4/GhNmAiJbcNw" height="1" width="1" />

Gearlog was able to spend a few minutes playing with one last night at a pre-CES show held in Manhattan. The device they played with was “fairly prototypey” and had Android 1.6 as the platform. They’re (and we’re) expecting it to be running 2.0 when it arrives in 2010.

As Gearlog points out, Saygus appears focused on video-conferencing capabilities, which isn’t really something anyone is prepared to handle in large capacity. If anyone can, we’d assume it’s Verizon. The VPhone has decent enough specs to at least warrant a look – 512MB RAM, 5 mega-pixel camera with flash, and a 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen.

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

Manipulate photos with effects directly on your phone

Share and Upload to PhotoShop.com Account

Cons

Limited features

Persistent background processing, attributes to performance/battery drain

Features:

Photoshop.com Mobile Android App allows you to edit photos on your phone and upload to their photo sharing service. Though a limited feature set you can Crop, Straighten, Rotate, Flip, manipulate Exposure, Saturation, Tint, convert to Black and White, and set Soft Focus on photos.

Gripe Alert: Being a Graphic Designer by trade, I was a bit disappointed with Adobe’s debut onto the Android platform, especially since this version offers slightly less features than the iPhone version.

I understand the rationale for background processing for the app, continuous upload while performing other tasks… but what if you’re not uploading to Photoshop.com? Worse, the app persistently inserts itself into background processing even if killed with TasKiller or Advanced Task Killer. :-(

Usefulness:

Not a world of useful but a nice to have app. Worth trying but I would suggest checking out Eric Wijngaard’s PicSay for more photo manipulation capabilities.

Ease of Use:

The app is easy to use on most features but could use some intuitive work on the Saturation & Exposure editing (however I would suggest checking out this How-To video as a refresher).

Frequently Used:

User dependent… even more frequent if coupled with their online photo service.

Interface:

The user interface is sleek, intuitive and mobile optimized.

Now that Verizon’s DROID has launched, I’ve been getting many reports that some Android Apps don’t work; force close errors, portions of the app freezes, or the graphics look crappy due to the higher screen size of Motorola’s DROID (all other devices were 320 x 480, whereas DROID’s illustrious screen is 480 x 854).

If you’ve been following Android’s growth since launch, this pattern with Google is not new… and actually attributed to another factor: the ability to test on the actual device. For a brief time developers experienced app crashes on the T-Mobile G1 until they got their hands on one or the Android Dev Phone 1. Verizon’s network of isolated phones can make it difficult for some developers to get their hands on practical applicable devices. Hint… hint… Motorola, please release a GSM compatible or non network choked Droid, or Google do us another favor and give some away or sell a Developers version.

Also when Google released Android version 1.5 (Cupcake) to Devs in mid April 2009, OTA updates were rolling out in mid May 2009, they had to quickly update their Android Apps or sink. In some cases; Google, Motorola nor Verizon are not at fault… Developers need to get busy cranking out Android 2.0 compatible apps! Some Android apps even become abandonware as they may never see an update.

This release timing was worse… at the time of this article, DROID is the only retailed and released phone with Android OS version 2.0 (may possibly get 2.1 update 12/11/09), all others phones and carriers support Android version 1.6 and lower. Google didn’t release version 2.0 until 10/27/09, DROID debuted 11/6/09 and developers have to scramble to learn what’s changed and update their apps. The sad part about this is most devs don’t know their app is not compatible until they start getting negative reviews in the Market.

I would encourage emailing the developers (which you can find their email address on the app listing in the Market) to let them know your problem. A majority of them will take the time to work with you to prepare a fix.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PlanetAndroidCom/~4/FgadFCkAn5Q" height="1" width="1" />

ReaderScope v1.3.2 - Social Channels

Few months back I realized that all the stories I read in my slashdot or ars-technica feeds seemed kinda ... stale. Why? Because most of the interesting ones I had already read - through links posted by the people I follow on Twitter. It is now a cliché to say that Twitter is the fastest medium of spreading news. Consequently, it's the news channel that delivers the latest news. Moreover, it's the news that you care about most; because it is coming from the people you have chosen to follow.

So how can a modern news reader be complete without incorporating this real time news channel.

In v1.3.2, ReaderScope introduces Social Channels.

You will see a third tab "Social" when you start the upgraded ReaderScope. You will find a preset Twitter subscription there. When you tap on it, you will be asked to login to Twitter (if you haven't already). Once it gets Twitter credentials, you can tap it again and it will download you twitter timeline. It won't show you all the twits (that is for dedicated twitter clients). Instead, it will go through all the twits and will pick the ones that have embedded links in them. ReaderScope will fetch the stories/pictures/videos pointed to by those links and when it's done, they will be presented to you as news items (with the original twits as yellow subtext).

How do you like that?

You can also schedule the Twitter subscription for periodic download.

You will see lot of other improvements in this version too, especially the item list (it now has author and timestamp, right in the list). The news fetched from Google News channels, looks fresh (unread) now; instead of dull in color. The unread counts have been fixed too.

On Podcast front: the ones that take too long "Preparing" (because of long time in buffering over slow network) can now be stopped.

So download the upgrade and enjoy.

And yes... in case you haven't noticed yet, ReaderScope is now accepting donations. ReaderScope is available FREE of cost for everyone to use. Some users who are avid news readers, will see great value in it. While others may not. So it's up to you to decide what's ReaderScope worth to you. If you can express it in terms of $$, you will help towards further development of ReaderScope. You can find the donate button on this page

... better yet, let me paste that button right here. :)

Thanks for all your support. More features are coming to ReaderScope. Show your support and help it improve.

Cheers!

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PlanetAndroidCom/~4/x32VrhtaB8k" height="1" width="1" />

Not a big update to Caltroid at this time, but I wanted to get out the release because Caltroid now works in 320×240 resolution (QVGA), and there are even devices out with that resolution, like the HTC Tattoo. Of course bigger screens will work as well (I’m looking at you, Verizon Droid). The other minor user visible change is that when you locate the nearest station with GPS, the destination station will stay the same whenever possible.

Under the hood I fixed the spaghetti layout into pretty clean
RelativeLayout
affair, except for the red strip container which is
LinearLayout
so I could use layout weight to size the departure and destination stations the same. Apparently this can be a performance hit, but it is probably overall faster than it used to be. (Yeah, bad me, I didn’t measure.)

Figuring out how to make an apk that would work in all SDK versions took some time as well. I ended up creating
layout-320x240
and
layout-land-320x240
directories to put in the QVGA specific changes needed. I should change to
layout-small
instead, but for some reason I could not get this to work. I also added
android:targetSdkVersion="4"
into
AndroidManifest.xml
and built with 1.6 SDK.

Final change in place is that I exported using the wizard in the Eclipse plugin, which should zipalign the apk and make the app use less memory.

Oh, I should note that Caltroid passed 100 users last month. Thanks to everyone who purchased it, and made it the best rated Caltrain schedule application for Android!
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PlanetAndroidCom/~4/SUzWNldgIso" height="1" width="1" />

I was really glad to see Joel Spolsky, Jeff Atwood, and the whole StackOverflow team in person, as well as listen to great talks in the following topics: 9:00 - 9:50 ...<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/PlanetAndroidCom/~4/3HP6L2FaJiY" height="1" width="1"/>

My New Android Phone Wants Me To Do WHAT?

So, I just got me a new phone that I've wanted for a long time - HTC Hero running the Android OS.
