This past week the Pixar-related interwebs were a flutter with talk of a DVD Cars spinoff called Planes. I didn’t post anything about it because I thought it sounded pretty crazy. Surely Pixar wouldn’t stoop to the lows that Disney did a few years ago with all the direct-to-dvd sequels they were churning out. Luckily, they’re not.

SlashFilm reports that Planes is actually being developed by DisneyToon Studios. While it’s stil disappointing that Pixar (and John Lasseter specifically) would allow Disney to use their characters in these sequels, at least it’s not being produced at Pixar. And I’ll say it. At least it’s just Cars.

Oh great. It seems Pixar is working on converting Ratatouille and other library titles to 3D for re-release in theaters. I understood why they did this for Toy Story 1 and 2 (in anticipation for Toy Story 3), but I don’t see the need to do this with all of their films. I am not a big fan of 3D, and I really only see it as a way for movie studies to squeeze extra dollars out of the hands of movie-goers. I can’t think of one movie I’ve seen in 3D where afterwards I was glad I paid the extra money, and I’ve seen quite a few. The only experience I think benefitted from 3D was the recent Day & Night short.

Regardless, I would probably go see this just for the chance to see Ratatouille in theaters again. The same would go for Finding Nemo, which sadly, is the only Pixar film I didn’t see in theaters. What’s your opinion on this? Do you love 3D, hate it, or not really care one way or the other? Sound off!

Etsy is a great place to find handmade goods from people all over the world. One of the fun things about a crafty community that large is that you can find items based on your favorite pieces of art or pop culture. Every once in a while I get on there and try to find a bunch of cool stuff, and this time I thought it would be worth sharing some Pixar Etsy Goodies!

Ellie’s Adventure Book

I’ve seen an official product at the Disney Store that didn’t look half as amazing as this. It is a blank journal/scrapbook on the insde, and the outside is made to look just like Ellie’s Adventure book from Up. I’m not a scrapbooking person, but I would almost get this just to sit it on my mantle.

My Adventure Book on Etsy

Buzz Plushie

Etsy user SaintAngel creates little fleece plush characters that kind of resemble eggs. Out of all the choices in their shop, I think the Buzz Lightyear version is the best. Perfect for the Buzz Lightyear and/or fleece egg enthusiast in your life.

Buzz Plushie on Etsy

Grape Soda ‘Ellie Badge’

This is probably my favorite piece of Pixar-related goodness on Etsy. Ellie badges. I’m sure if I bought one of these and gave it to my wife, she would immediately start to cry, just like she does every time she sees on in Up. Hmm, I may need to test that theory.

Ellie Badge on Etsy

Space Ranger Dress

I’m sure all the female Toy Story fans get sick of sporting Jessie on their clothes, and wish they had more Buzz Lightyear options. Well, Tinkerellacreations has that covered with this awesome (but pricey) Space Ranger dress. It’s available in 2T to girls 6, which sounds like a foreign language to me since I don’t have kids yet, but I’m sure those are standard Galactic Alliance sizes.

Space Ranger Dress on Etsy

Toy Story Alien Beanie Cap

Since I can’t very well go around in a dress, the Alien Beanie Cap might be a better fit for me. Of course, I know the chances of it fitting my huge head are next to none and would probably make the Alien look like it was getting ready to explode, but I digress. Etsy user Perfectfitcrochet gets bonus points for also having Mike Wazowski and Hamm flavors.

Alien Beanie Cap on Etsy

Wilderness Explorer Badges

Up seems to be dominating the Pixar craft marketplace, but that’s probably because the film had such a great handmade aesthetic to it. Besides the Ellie Badge and the Adventure Book, you can find some pretty cool (and accurate) replicas of Russel’s Wilderness Explorer badges. Now, if only they’d made the cheeseburger cake badge, I’d be set.

Set 1 and Set 2

You may be wondering why I haven’t been updating the site much lately. Well, I’ll fill you in in just a second, but first, here are my thoughts on Toy Story 3.

My Toy Story 3 Mini-Review

You know how you have little memories that theoretically you shouldn’t remember, but for some reason they stick with you for years? Well, seeing Toy Story at my local theater in 1995 (at the age of 10) is one of those. I don’t remember most trips to the theater, but for the past 15 years, I’ve remembered the day I went to see it. I guess it was the beginning of my Pixar love-affair.

Four years later I took my niece to see Toy Story 2, and was amazed that it was as good (or even better) than the first. Pixar was obviously doing something right, and as the years went by, I marveled at Pixar’s uncanny ability to tell a story, a trait that was not common in Hollywood anymore.

Pixar left our favorite characters in good hands. Lee Unkrich did an amazing job closing out this trilogy; what will undoubtedly be the most critically acclaimed trilogy in film history. Toy Story 3 has all the humor and heart you could squeeze into an animated movie, but most of all it is the perfect ending to a wonderful series. Andy’s grown up along with us, and it was time for the gang to have one last adventure before figuring out their place in the world. I won’t go into any spoilers, but I’m sure you’ve all seen it a couple times by now anyway.

My only complaints revolve around me wanting to see the new characters more, but I know that none of them really should have had more screen time. Ken and Barbie’s roles were a pleasant surprise, and the rest of the new characters are just icing on the cake.

So, go see Toy Story 3 a couple more times while it’s still in theaters, and show your support for the greatest filmmakers in the business.

…And a Site Update

The reason I haven’t been updating Pixar Fanboy lately is because I’m trying to figure out a unique purpose for the site. The last thing I want is to just re-post news that you’ve probably read three times already on the other excellant Pixar blogs. The Pixar fan community is definitely big enough to support multiple blogs, but as far as news, The Pixar Blog, Pixar Talk, and Upcoming Pixar have it covered.

I’ve been keeping up my blog Saturday Morning Central that I started years ago, and didn’t want to pursue Pixar Fanboy until I really had it figured out.

I have a pretty good idea about what I’m going to do to be a valuable part of the Pixar blogging community, but it’s going to be a little bit of work, and I may not get it launched before the end of the summer. In the meantime, I’ll try to post some reviews and thoughts that won’t just be white noise. If you’d like to support the Pixar Fanboy cause, you could buy some of these awesome Toy Story shirts from 80stees.com!

See you soon!

Everyone has already talked about the first (genius) viral ad Pixar created for Lots-o’-Huggin Bear, but Amid over at Cartoon Brew pointed this Japanese version out, and I had to share.

Pixar is really being creative with their viral marketing for Toy Story 3, I’m loving it!

No, Pixar Pook-a-Looz isn’t a crazy festival I’m having in my backyard or a dance I invented. Pook-a-Looz are the new, cute, urban-inspired plush toys from Disney featuring 30+ characters, including my favorites above, Woody and Buzz.

The Pook-a-Looz are around $12, so I’m going to at least pick up Woody and Buzz. They also have all the classic Disney characters, as well as some from Nightmare Before Christmas and The Muppets. As far as I know, Woody and Buzz are the only two Pixar Pook-a-Looz, but please correct me if I’m wrong.

What other Pixar Characters would you love to see in Pook-a-Looz form? My first two choices would be Mike Wazowski and Sully from Monsters, Inc.

It looks like Henry Selick, director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline, is setting up shop at Disney/Pixar to create new films and adapt more literary works.

Variety claims he will be at Emeryville, but it’s unclear if his films will be under the Disney or Pixar banner. Hopefully we’ll find out soon!

Have you picked up Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray yet? If so, you’re probably going to wish you hadn’t, because if you jump through some hoops you can score both for less than $7, plus get 2 free movie tickets good for Toy Story 3. How so? Read on.

This deal only applies at Toys R Us and it ends tomorrow, March 27th, 2010. If you miss this one, you can still get a pretty good deal elsewhere, but I’ll cover that in a bit.

The Details

Through tomorrow, TRU is selling the Blu-ray Combo packs for $16.99 each if you buy both. Using a thread on SlickDeals, I found that there are two coupons from Disney that are stackable that will save you $15 on each title.

First, paste these codes into your Disney Movie Rewards account to get the $10 off coupons.

Toy Story 10th Anniversary Edition DVD: 786936294507
Toy Story 2 2-Disc Special Edition DVD: 786936294521

Next, go to Disney’s site and grab the $5 off coupons. Note, you have to install a Disney coupon printing software in order to print them, but it’s worth it.

Now march down to your local TRU, and watch the priceless expression on your cashier’s face when you walk out with two Blu-rays for under $7.

If you can’t make the TRU deadline, you should still be able to stack the two coupons at other retailers and still come out pretty cheap.

This worked for me today, so sound off in the comments if you have any other tips!

Just some quick site news. I’ve been busier than ever lately, and I’ve been having trouble fitting Pixar Fanboy into my schedule, but I think I’m ready to pick up posting again. The one thing I definitely do not want to do is just regurgitate Pixar news that other blogs have posted already, so I’m going to try and find some unique posts to make here. I might consider trying a Pixar podcast too, but who knows. Feel free to leave some comments if you have any ideas for the site!

In the meantime, you should check out my newest blog, Animation on Blu-ray. It features news, reviews, and a complete release schedule and database of all animated Blu-ray titles! I didn’t get any review copies of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray, but I should be picking them up soon and reviewing them.

See you soon!
