Pismo Beach’s St. Anthony’s Festa (Festival) is an annual event to celebrate the cultural contribution of the area’s Portuguese descendants. The parade was on Sunday 8-15-2010 at 9:30 AM this year.

St. Anthony Celebration is Aug. 13-15 in Pismo Beach
The schedule of events includes:

Dancing at 8 p.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 780 Bello St., Pismo Beach.

Donors’ luncheon at noon on Saturday, followed by an auction of donateditems of produce, baked goods, crafts and gift certificates from several businesses at St. Anthony grounds, 390 Bello St., Pismo Beach.

Presentation of queens and officers at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 780 Bello St., Pismo Beach.

Parade at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, forming at the Pismo Beach pier parking lot, located at the west end of Addie Street, proceeding to St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church, 800 Bello St., Pismo Beach, where Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Following Mass, the parade will continue to the St. Anthony grounds, 390 Bello St., Pismo Beach, where sopas, a Portuguese soup of cabbage and beef poured over French bread, will be served at noon, followed by an auction.

The Grand March will be a 7 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 780 Bello St., Pismo Beach, followed by dancing from 8-11 p.m.

A luncheon of stew and beans will be served at noon today at St. Anthony grounds, 390 Bello St., Pismo Beach, followed by an auction.

Wine Happenings along the Central Coast

A new, major wine event is coming to the Central Coast, local wineries are hosting wine and food pairings and a new winery has opened its doors for tasting.

Autry Cellars is now open for tasting among the barrels of his artisan winery at 835 Capitolio Way in San Luis Obispo. Steve Autry has been making wine for well over a decade producing a dozen different wines including many lesser known varietals such as, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Tempranillo. The working winery is within the city limits, so no vineyard tours here, but you will find some exceptional red wines. Steve takes drop ins during the week or come by during his regular tasting hours, Friday to Sunday 11 am to 6 pm.

On August 7th swing by Stephen Ross Cellars on Suburban Road for a special Library sale & tasting, plus food pairing with Et Voila’s Mobile Bistro. Let winemaker Steven Dooley and French chef Jose Dahan share their special treats at Steve’s well-regarded urban winery just off South Higuera in San Luis Obispo.

Make plans to visit the central coast during Sunset Magazine’s Savor the Central Coast four-day food & wine extravaganza starting September 30th through October 3rd with culinary tours, winemaker dinners, seminars, a concert and main event tasting. The Historic Santa Margarita Ranch will be hosting this first time event along with over 200 wineries, dozens of restaurants, chefs and food vendors. Wine dinners, demonstrations, tastings, tours and even a train ride will highlight this grand four-day event.

300 Runners and walkers participated in the Stride the Tide Event in Pismo Beach today. Once again, the Pismo Beach Recreation Department did a great job putting this event on. There was also a beach volleyball tournament at the sand courts north of the Pier. Over 40 teams participated. Kudos to the Rec. Department again!

The Bob Jones Trail  is getting a “facelift” including tree trimming and resurfacing.
The Bob Jones City to the Sea Trail is a trail along the San Luis Obispo Creek.

The current section of trail is paved and provides a great trip for runners, walkers, and bike riders through wooded areas and the golf course.

Sections of the trail have been closed over the past 2 weeks.

Today they were paving part of the trail by the creek in Avila by the Woodside Deli.

Paving the Bob Jones Trail

Bob Jones Trail Length: 1.5 miles from the Ontario Rd parking lot to Avila Beach

Location: Between Avila Beach and US101
Level: Easy
Activities: Walking, Running, Biking, Skating,

Exit US101 at Avila Beach and head West. Turn right on Ontario Rd. A parking area is available at the trail head.

The Bob Jones Trail trail is used by locals and visitors alike.

All age groups of  parents, kids, seniors, enjoy the use of this quiet
trail along the creek.  What a great place to enjoy the local ambiance.

There are all sorts of wildlife that can be seen along the trail and in the creek, birds, ducks, fish, turtles.

Some sections of the trail have been reopened.  The “word on the trail”  is that the whole trail will be open again by the weekend.

The Bob Jones Trail is a great asset to our local area!

July 31: Stride with the Tide
Race starts at 8:30 AM rain or shine. The course is out and back on the sand starting at the Pismo Beach Pier. Walkers are welcome. Registration is from 7:30 – 8:15 AM at the pier on race day.
Checks: payable to the City of Pismo Beach.
Entry Fee: $15 with shirt, $10 without shirt. T-shirts will be available to the first 100 entrants who request them. Shirt size will be accommodated in order of entry.
Awards: medals for the top three places in 10 age divisions.
Conducted: by the San Luis Distance Club www.sldc.org
Age Division: 12 & Under, 13-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+

Wine Deals Along the Central Coast

The weather is warming up. Trips, visits and vacations are being planned. The beach is calling. July is an exciting time along the Central Coast with lots of activities, diversions and adventures. Wine tasting is the perfect way to unwind and discover the beauty of the area and realize why we visit or choose to live here.

When you are out at the wineries, visiting with winemakers, the tasting room staffs and friends, you know that this is your time. No work, no to-do lists and plenty of time to relax. The job at hand is to visit a new winery or return to a favorite and maybe make a few discoveries along the way – and this year you will find some great bargains.

During the summer the Central Coast vineyards are brightly colored with green vines, ripening fruit and the anticipation of fine wines to come. Winemakers generally bottle their prior vintages in the Spring and early Summer. Visiting the wineries at this time of year can be rewarding as the vintners show their new releases and often give discounts on their excess inventory.

This year many wineries have cases stacked higher than usual and want to clear out their cellars for the new wine to come. Many have upwards of 20, 30 and even 50 percent discounts if you buy a case or more. There are some great buys out there that will surely not last, nor be repeated anytime soon.

So this is a perfect time to fill out your cellar, or your extra closet space, with some exceptional wines and feel great about the bargain prices you so smartly took advantage of.

If you plan to buy multiple cases, be sure to have a mix of wines with some that can age and others ready to drink. Many wineries will also let you mix and match wines to build a case though usually the discounts are not as steep. Make sure to taste everything you are planning to buy. Old wine can be wonderful, or it can be old and worn out.

You may want to take home an extra reserve of the “everyday wine” as well as find some special treats. Remember to negotiate your tasting fee if you are buying, especially if you are purchasing a case or more.

Enjoy the wine country this season and relieve the vintners of their 2007 and 2008 wines. These deals won’t last forever and a savvy purchase now will be enjoyed and appreciated for years to come.
