As I scroll through Facebook these days, every post is a glaring reminder of my age. Pregnancy announcements, baby pictures, pleas to other moms…it’s all there. And I can’t help but feel like something is wrong with me for not wanting children (or a child). Because that is what women in their 30′s who are approaching seven years of marriage SHOULD want, right society? Erin of Elements of Style sums it up well in her recent post, and while I am not trying to have children she hits the nail on the head.

I can’t tell you how many people ask me on a daily basis when I am having children (as though it’s everyone’s business to begin with) and the look of horror on their face when I tell them I don’t want or plan to. A look to suggest I am some sort of alien life form from planet Mars because I am female and {GASP} have no desire to be a mother. One might think I had some sort of traumatic upbringing but actually quite the opposite. I have a mother who is my best friend and gave up her life to raise my brother and for that I am so thankful. Maybe I am just selfish. Maybe someday I’ll change my mind (heck, at one time I thought I wanted to be an urban planner and see where that ended up). For now I’d just be happy without the societal guilt for not serving my duty as a woman and raising offspring.

For the past several months I have been doing some freelance writing for a handful of local magazines. I’ve always considered myself more of a designer and less of a writer and while I am certainly not the best writer, I find so much satisfaction in the process. I’ve spent the last four years telling my (not so interesting) story on this blog through words and images, but as it turns out I like to tell other people’s stories even more. With so many inspirational individuals in the world, it’s hard not to find a great tale waiting to be told. Turns out that award winning story I wrote in the third grade about my teddy bear might have meant something after all. Who knew?
