/> I thought it would be a fun, easy and mindless way to make a little extra cash for household bills every month, so I recruited myself- WRONG! I can’t sell my inventory, no one wants to book parties, have had no-shows to 3 Holiday Open Houses/ Coffees, neighbors and people looked the other way and pretended not to be seen while walking past my trunk show, as people appear annoyed or angry when I even mention selling them Mary Kay, and I have stopped wasting my time trying to book or sell. The last thing I want to do is permanently damage my relationships with those I love and care about, and do not have time for this “business” around my busy work and family schedule.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
The daily phone calls in the beginning from the director, the almost harassing phone calls from the director to buy inventory at the $1800 level and to charge it to my credit card, the “training” calls with friends and family that were a big recruiting scheme
What are you doing now?
Waiting for my status to become “inactive” or my contract to expire so I can unload my inventory.
i was informed of the mary kay program through one of my customers at work. i had asked her about it and if she liked it, what has it done for her and etc. so far i was surprised about so much you can get from MK that i asked her to send me the email to join! and as i stayed up looking for reviews i contacted a recruiter who happened to live just down my street. and i met up with her and i felt so guilible that i signed up and gave her my money. (at that time it was a sale in october, signing up was only $75) then we met and we talked and she told me about the benefits we have and its 50% i was so amazed that i wanted to do it and was determined. so then the hosting my party time came and i did it with only about 6 friends and my SD went when she saw all my college friends (im only 19) she was surprised and told me next time get older women. i felt like that was really rude, it shouldnt matter at all! MK is for everyone theres make up and etc! anywho that day i made the 200 in worth of sales but what noone ever told me was i at least needed 400 RETAIL to be active to get the 50% OFF so then i was pretty much screwed. My SD kept telling me you can do it, can you borrow money from anyone, get a credit card all this stuff and i was feeling really pressured! so at the end i made a mistake and did a 1400 order and havent sold anything! i ended up being late on some of my bills and well they dont care they make money off of our commission. i was so excited but being pressured really ruined it for me! there are nice people but not to be offensive but my SD was right this program is for older program and not for me. now i just called and they are sending me back my repurchase form so hopefully i get a good amount back! and they told me YOU KNOW YOU CAN NEVER COME BACK AND WE WILL LET YOUR SALES DIRECTOR KNOW. i was like perfectly fine with me! AND 1 MINUTE LATER MY SD CALLED I IGNORED IT (:

Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
it was fun and they are charming ladies but its a whole business deal and as much money we wanna make they wanna make the same off of us! so its not really your “OWN BUSINESS”
What are you doing now?
currently working making way more and being a part time student with NO DEBT OR STRESS
At the time i wanted to supplement my income and thought Mary Kay sounded like a good way to do it. My daughter was about 3 at the time and I also worked part-time at an accounting office. I found a SD (she was a Director in Training) online and called her, I just wanted to know more about it. I also have a cosmetology license and love working with cosmetics, so i thought that I would be in good company.
When I called my SD to talk about MK with her, she was so nice and thrilled that i called her. She invited me over to her house for a free facial so we could talk about the “opportunity”.
Once I got to her house, we completed the facial and she told me that there was no commitment to buy-that i could run my business the way i wanted.
That day I received my kit and all the information included. After I looked through it all i was overwhelmed. What was all this about buying inventory to win a ladder pin? There were even 2 advertisements for credit cards, so you could get credit to order your inventory.
We had little income and no way was I going to apply for credit. My SD asked me if any friends or family could offer to help me with my inventory. She also told me that I should quit my part time accounting job and do MK full time!
My first meeting was at a hotel in a conference room, and we actually had to pay to enter. (I think it was 2 dollars) When i did that, i knew something was up. There were about 20 or so other women and they were so fake happy. I sat there and listened to the head director talk about all their sales and awards. She looked exhausted.
A few weeks later my SD invited me over to view training videos, and told me that whenever you place an order she will have a party for her group. You are only invited if you make sales or order (it was one or the other) So I basically thought I have to pay to hang out with you?
After she begged and begged me to order inventory, I finally told her this wasn’t for me. I never heard from her again and she took me off all her email lists, etc. It was like i never existed.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
Nothing really, it all just seemed really phony, and I am glad that I didn’t get sucked in to the cult.
What are you doing now?
Living my life MK free and having no regrets!
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
It is true I should have done more research before I purchased my starter kit. I think if you are helping someone else earn profits for the work you do yourself is a scam. If you like MK products there are hundreds of them for sale on ebay, you don’t even need a consultant.

Name: Amanda

Are You Active or Inactive? Recently Inactive

If Inactive, Date You Left MK: 10/4/2011

Amount of Initial Inventory You Purchased: $600

How were you recruited? Tell us all the details.
I went to a small party hosted by my friend and was impressed by a few of the products. I met with the Sales Rep, who is actually the Sales Director in the St. Louis area, and loved the idea of getting products at 50% off. The Sales Director (Amanda) also persuaded me with stories about prizes she gives out – Coach bags, designer sunglasses, etc. Because there were no sales quotas, I took the bait. BUT HOLY CRAP THAT WAS A MISTAKE.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
Two weeks after signing the papers to be a MaryKay rep, my sales director pressured me into asking friends to host parties. I felt so sleezy asking my friends to come and spend money, or rather give me their money. I was so embarrassed, and found the only “customers” I was comfortable with was a couple ladies I worked with.

Anyway, a month or so into my MK experience, I won a contest our Sales Director has put on. The prize was to be a Coach wallet. She had even told me that they were from the new Spring line, and I’d have my choice of pink or lime green. I spent more on inventory so that I would meet the criteria for earning the Coach wallet, justifying in my mind as “I’ll be getting a $100 gift, and work harder to sell the product.” Problem was SHE GAVE ME A FAKE COACH WALLET. And not even a good fake! I emailed her to let her know it was fake (in case she didn’t know) and that I expected to still receive the Coach Wallet I had been promised – from the new Spring line. She replied saying that “the contest was just for fun.” And that she knew they were fake; she had bought the wallets off a friend who sells them. I was furious! SHE LIED TO ME! And it’s ILLEGAL TO BUY AND DISTRIBUTE fake Coach products (Trademark infringement!). So I had my lawyer write up a letter, and informed MaryKay’s legal department, but in short, they really didn’t care.

Additionally, they totally screwed me on my inventory repurchase. The retail price was $248, and they sent me a check for $26 plus tax. REALLY? Such bullcrap. I’ve just called to figured out why I didn’t get more back. Now I just have to wait and hear their excuse.

What are you doing now?
I have a full time job working in Marketing for one of America’s Most Admired Companies – and they actually say what they do, and do what they say.

Feel free to include any additional comments here:
Bottom Line, this company has no integrity. How does lying to your associates empower them? I will continue to spread my distaste to friends and family….
I was met with the MK opportunity at a vulnerable time in my life as a newly wed who’s husband was gone in the NAVY. A good friend’s mom who I trusted called me and presented the opportunity to me. I was so excited knowing that this was the change in my life I had been praying for. I signed up after talking to my husband, and then got the inventory call.
I’m also a college student, so I was reluctant to even pay the starter kit, website, propay money, but I did to prove I was a serious consultant who really wanted to work my business. My director set the bar at $1200 for me, and I had a hard time accepting the manipulating things she was saying, because I kept thinking of all the red flags when she was telling me to use a credit card. I don’t believe in credit cards, plus I’m already in school debt, so it wasn’t an option. She made me feel guilty by telling me her sob story of when she starting MK as a bankrupt preggers who wrote a bad check to pay for her starter kit, so she wouldn’t accept excuses from me.

She pulled the God card saying I was living in fear and God didn’t call me to be fearful, blah blah blah blah blah! I gave in and borrowed the money from my mom, and luckily was able to pay it back with tax returns! Oh, and I didn’t a $1800 instead of a $1200…

I started going to adoptee meetings excited about my new “career,” but I felt uneasy, because I truly didn’t like the Mary Kay enthusiasm or all the consultants/red jackets young and old who hadn’t a CLUE HOW TO WEAR MAKEUP pretending they were makeup artists. I ignored that, though. I got caught up in the hype, and became close to my director.
Because I’m my director’s daughter’s friend, she got emotionally attached to me saying I was like her daughter, and so on, and I trusted her, because she has made so many great “milestones” w/ the company and has been in for 20 yrs. She started using our bonding experiences to manipulate me when I wasn’t doing everything she asked. I wasn’t allowed to make any orders without her, and I felt like I was micro-managed even though I opened my own business!

Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I went to leadership and seminar, and got swept up in the hype. My director showed me off to everyone (even though I wasn’t a star) saying how I was going to be the next big thing. Because of my age, personality, and because I wasn’t ugly everyone thought I was going to do huge things when I got home. I didn’t want to let them or myself down, so I got to work. I put on my MK uniform before and after work and hit salons trying to do baskets with them. I made phone calls. I became overwhelmed instantly in the first week! I became a workaholic, and I hadn’t even started! I felt completely wimpy, because I barely even did anything, and I was already out of energy!

A few months later I started expressing dislike in what I was doing to my director. She called me pigheaded and childish. She said the conversation was really pissing her off, and that I was jerking her around, because one minute I wanted to become a director and the next minute I just wanted to do part-time. She was very hard on me, because of our close relationship, which probably made it worse for me. I got off the phone crying and really upset in myself about being a failure or as she said “a quitter, because I didn’t even try.”

At this point, I knew nothing would change. I hated pretending that I liked what I was doing. I was so bogged down by the lifestyle, and I couldn’t get back up. I spent more money than I should’ve on gas to get to my adoptee meeting (an hour away!), printer ink, business clothes, business products, baskets & basket products for giveaways, conference costs, inventory, etc. etc.
I started finding things out about my director’s personal life like her marriage falling apart, her manipulative tactics with her daughter/family members, etc. and started to feel a little more empowered. No longer did I take all the blame for everything! I started to fish around these sites, and I knew I had to get out! Why did I feel like I was in a cult??!

I had a business phone call w/ my director to tell her I simply couldn’t do this anymore, because I didn’t have the time and money to continue part-time. As soon as the words were spoken, she freaked out! She felt personally attacked by me even though all I’d mentioned were myself and MY BUSINESS not her! She practically said I was bi-polar, started yelling at me, didn’t let me get a word in to explain anything, she even swore, and started doing this stupid role-playing. She said if I had a son who started whining because he couldn’t make the team, what would I tell him? I said, “I don’t know, I don’t have kids. Try again next year?” I knew what she was getting at, and I was so pissed off at this point.

She said she has consultants do part-time that work two jobs and have children. My question was DO THEY MAKE ANY MONEY? That’s all I’m concerned with right now. Then, she started the angle that I wasn’t teachable and I refused to learn anything in life. I’d be stuck in my present circumstances for the rest of my life and pass it onto my children. There’s really nothing so bad about my life, but whatever.
Again, I left the conversation crying. She later put up a FB post related to me. Real mature. I sent her a lengthy Email afterwards. I just really can’t believe I ignored all the warning signs. I trusted this family friend and she turned out to be a manipulative lunatic. I know she’ll be gossiping about me to all those people who had high hopes for me at seminar, but what can I do? I feel so used! Ugh!
This happened two nights ago, by the way…

What are you doing now?
Trying to get out. Trying to vent on this site, because no one except someone who’s been in MK can understand the craziness.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
Ten Things I hate about Mary Kay:
1. Panty hose and business skirts…really? This is 2011. I spent way too much on my consultant clothes when I had so many nice business pants
2. How they use God to manipulate you into doing something, but won’t allow you to say, “God is leading me in another direction.”
3. I HATE the horribly unfashionable director’s uniform. Apart from the black one from 2010 (I think), they’re all so ugly and unflattering.
4. Most Mary Kay ladies can’t do their own makeup let alone others! For weddings, I was told to give the makeup samples to the bridesmaids and let them do their own. Why are they paying me, then? I never felt comfortable with that, so I ALWAYS did what they paid me to do at weddings.
5. Being a STAR consultant…I never understood why that was the “highest honor in MK.” I still don’t.
6. Any objection you have to anything is overcome and used against in other conversations.
7. Although I like the product, MK makeup (more so the colors) are not like pro brands like MAC. I hate that everyone in MK thinks they are when you can barely can do a clean smokey eye with the black.
8. EVERYONE IS A CLONE! This bothered me the most as a young person. I hate that I couldn’t have an identity apart from everyone else. To me, makeup is an art, but this business is all sales and NO art, therefore everyone looks cheap unless you’re gorgeous enough to pull of a cheap look. Some definitely can.
9. The directors all act like they’re living large. Unless they have a rich husband, I KNOW most of them are either in debt or just scraping by with their sales. Almost EVERYTHING goes into their business.
10. Because I was more “family oriented” and a “people pleaser” my personality was definitely working against me in this business. My director was extremely dominant making her the best candidate in the world, and I (not even joking) had to be like her to be successful. I never want to feel like my personality or my strengths are a weakness. Good Lord!
I always thought about selling MK or Avon, but it wasnt until I was able to talk to someone about actually signing up, that I put a lot of thought into it. I told a consultant that I was interested in selling MK and she put me in touch with her SD within the day so we could talk. The SD told me to come to a party and get a facial and see how it all went about. Well, it really wasn’t a party, it was more of a directors meeting and she just happened to give me a facial and do my make up for me. I thought that it was a great idea to sign up so I signed the beauty agreement, but I wouldn’t have the money for close to a week. The SD that invited me was my ride, so as she was giving me a ride home, the whole was she was asking who I could borrow the money from, even though I explained to her multiple times that no one in my family would be able to help me out. That kind of got my wheel turning even though I had already signed the contract, but never gave any money over.

Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I really did liked getting pampered with the facial and such. That was probably the best part of the experience.
What are you doing now?
Waiting for my baby girl to be born in the next couple months.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
If someone could answer this question in the comments, that would be wonderful.

Am I still on the hook with MK, even though I signed the contract but I never gave them the initial $100 or so for the starter kit? Can I just call up the director and tell her I am no longer interested or what? Also, if she tries to say that I have to go through with it and I don’t have too, how can I tell her I really know what is going on and I will not be bullied into paying her the money?

Thank you!
 Soon to be inactive
Amount of Initial Inventory You Purchased:
$900

How were you recruited? Tell us all the details.
I had a couple classes in college with a girl who was extremely into Mary Kay. She devoted at least 50 hours per week into MK at the expense of her classes and other responsibilities. She kept asking all the girls in our department to host facial parties for her. After e-mails, texts, and asking in-person, I finally agreed to host a party for her. I invited all my roommates and a few other girls. All of us intended to only spend maybe $20 on some eyeshadow/lip gloss/etc. We ended up getting sucked into the MK hype and ended up spending wayyyy too much money. Four of us agreed to meet to talk about joining MK the next morning. I ended up signing, then was immediately approached about which level of inventory I wanted to purchase. I had thought purchasing inventory would involve spending maybe $300… boy, was I wrong! I was being told I should borrow from my parents, private lenders, and any other number of sources to start at $1800 minimum wholesale. I ended up telling my SD that I could do the $600 level so I got some of the bonuses, but when I went through and ordered with my SD, I somehow ended up charging around $900 to my credit card. The red flags should have gone off when I was being told to ask my parents for over a thousand dollars, or take out a student loan with no intention of putting it towards school costs. Additionally, I was told I should place my order by midnight that night to help my recruiter’s numbers out (fortunately I at least put my foot down on this). Although my recruiter and SD were very nice people, I did not appreciate the amount of pressure placed on me to spend money I didn’t have.

Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
As a full-time college student with two other jobs, I didn’t actually have too much time to put into MK. I was told that I could work on it only a few hours a week and make great money, so I chose to try it out. My most memorable experience with MK was a realization I had when I finally was able to figure out what the feeling I got every time I asked people about hosting parties was. When I asked a family member or friend about hosting a party, the response I almost always received was ‘Okay, but I don’t plan on buying anything’, which I knew translated to ‘Don’t try to pressure me into buying stuff I don’t want’. I realized that I felt sleazy about asking friends and family to host parties because I knew they would end up spending money they didn’t want to spend either to be supportive or out of the MK hype. I knew I couldn’t do this to them, so I decided then that I wanted nothing to do with MK. This was the best decision I’d made since I started down the pink path.

What are you doing now?
I am currently waiting for my check to come from the MK product repurchase department. As a related note, I searched for hours on MK sites to find information about how to go about sending back my unused inventory and found absolutely nothing. The only way I finally found out what to do was from this site!

Other than that, I am still a full-time student, working two jobs relevant to my area of study and planning on going to grad school and getting a job that doesn’t require me to spend obscene amounts of money and sell people I care about things they don’t need or want.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
I now carry an MK business card in my wallet, on which I’ve written “Don’t be impulsive!”.
I reached out to my former MK consultant to get started. I was not recruited.
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
I have read all the horrible stories on here and Pink Truth and it really makes me sad that these women have been treated this way. It was all surprising to me because my experience has been wonderful from the start. My recruiter is incredibly supportive and my “adoptive” director has given me a lot of good advice along with the other ladies at our meetings. No one has pressured me to buy anything – I bought everything on my own. I asked my director to help me with my first order and she simply asked how much I wanted to spend and then told me the best things to get for that money. They have loaned me product when I did not have what a customer wanted, I am invited to meetings and not “required” to attend.
What are you doing now?
I am still working full time and getting my MK business started.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
My only advice is this…Question everything and remember…you don’t work for or report to your recruiter or your director. This is your business and if you are not being treated like you think you should, find another director to work with or reach out to other consultants. It is unfortunate that these people are not ethical in the way they recruit and their contracts should be terminated. I just wanted to put out there that not everyone has a bad experience and I am so thankful for the people who helped me get started!
A friend of mine was approached at her work by a woman who thought she was beautiful so she wanted her to be a “model” for her portfolio. She then asked her to invite some friends to get facials too. She invited me and I reluctantly went. I told myself I would not buy ANYTHING!! I ended up getting sucked into the hype that is MK and made an appointment to talk about joining. I also purchased some product which I actually don’t regret as it has worked wonders on my skin. I met with her at Starbucks and she was 20 minutes late which really put me off as I am in Sales for my full time job and I always make a point to be early for appointments with clients. I should have taken that 20 minutes and ran! I ended up signing up and then found myself being talked into buying inventory. Her points seemed valid to me at the time. I am an instant gratification kind of person so I understand the argument of having inventory so people can take home what they purchase right away. I went in at a higher level than I should have to “maximize” on the freebies. I got a phone call everyday from my recruiter and her director to see if I was ready to make the inventory purchase. They insisted that the director MUST place the first order for me. My debut had gone well so I figured I would have no problem selling a lot of product. I gave in and let them place the order.

It is very unlike me to not research something before committing. I let the “pink dreams” get inside my head and I made a big mistake. I found this site and a few others shortly after making my first inventory purchase. It definitely put doubts in my mind and gave me something to think about. After attending a couple of meetings I knew I had to get out fast. The women in my unit are so fake! They had a special meeting where my director’s director came down to speak. They acted like this woman was a celebrity. I could read her from the moment I shook her hand, she was a MKbot to the extreme! It wasn’t until she suggested clever ways to hide your purchases from your husband that I felt like I needed to run screaming from that place. Are you kidding me? The number 1 cause for divorce in this country is finances and you want to encourage women to hide large purchases from their husbands?! Can somebody say GIANT RED FLAG! That’s another thing, they assume that all women in Mary Kay are married. I kept on getting invites to all of these “cute” little socials but they were only for couples. I am single and perfectly ok with that!

I am just ready for my final order to come in so I can get the product to my customers that they ordered and send back the rest. Yes, thats right, I have had to place 3 more orders since my $3,000 inventory order because I didn’t have everything that I needed. I do have friends who love the product, as do I, so I will probably let them go through my inventory and buy it at wholesale and return what is left over to the company. After that I am done!! Yay!!
Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it.
The only positive experience is that my skin does look and feel great since using the products. As for the negative memorable experiences I have several. For the most part my debut went really well. I had a great turn out and even filled up my power start poster board. I sold over $700 worth of product that night. I was pretty excited. The only thing that bothered me was that when we had our “individual consultations” my recruiter was trying to pressure my friends into joining Mary Kay as well. I know my friends well and I could tell that it was making them uncomfortable. Recruiting was never my goal in joining the company. I have since realized that recruiting is all they want you to do. All of the training that goes on at meetings is how to recruit more people. I thought that training would be about how to use the products and which products work best for different people. I had to figure all of that out on my own. All these women are willing to help you out with is purchasing more inventory!

Side note: my quotes around the word model in the answer to the first question are because this means of approaching new clients is a joke! I have never been to a MK party where the consultant pulled out the “portfolio” to show you different looks. It is just a way to get into your home, sell you products, and hound you to listen to a presentation or conference call about becoming a consultant.

What are you doing now?
I am still working my advertising sales job full time. I am trying to find a job that actually has something to do with my degrees though. I would love to do social work or be a probation officer but the ultimate goal is to work for the FBI.
Feel free to include any additional comments here:
I don’t doubt that there are units out there that are honest and successful but I have seen too many examples on these websites and have had a bad experience myself and that is enough for me to be finished with MK. The fact that the company allows these things to go on is wrong. I am still deciding if I want to continue to use the product or not. If there are any suggestions for comparable products out there please let me know!! Thanks for listening to my little rant!!

Name: Shannon

Are You Active or Inactive? active? waiting on starter kit

Amount of Initial Inventory You Purchased: none

How were you recruited? Tell us all the details. I was helping distribute prom dresses to underprivileged teens (I know I’m shining my halo but I’ll talk more about it), and the recruiter came. She did beautiful work on all the girls, but she realized their prom wasn’t for a month [this was late march]. She asked if I was one girl’s big sister, and gave me a card with the girl’s colors on it. The girl looked beautiful, and I really wanted her to have the makeup, but I was flat broke. The recruiter lit up and told me that they were having a spring break special. I could buy a starter kit for half off, and use that to fix their faces the night of. So I did. She met me at the school, took my money, and brought out the inventory sheet. I wondered why I should buy $600 of makeup for 20 girls to go to prom, and she said I’d get $100 prize. She also told me that what I “bought for one could be sold for two. “I’m not selling,” I said. “I’m buying this kit for the girls.” She took my money and hasn’t spoken to me since, but I am getting mail and emails!

Do you have a memorable experience from your time in Mary Kay? If so, please tell us about it. I remember my mind being blown by an envelope I got yesterday. There were four pages about the recruiter herself, flattering pictures, a list of her kids’ colleges, even her daughter in a prom dress in front of the pink Caddy. Then a few more pages about ordering inventory. I guess I’m supposed to want to be like her, but I don’t even drive.

I also remember an email from the recruiter’s director. It told her to tell me and other newbies to sign up for a $15/month phone service that let us listen to motivational messages. I got suspicious then. I’d been offered a lot of stuff that wasn’t about makeup: business cards, stickers, pins and scarves, phone and internet service, and propay.

What are you doing now? I work from home, writing papers for spoiled college kids One good thing I’ve gotten from MK is the chart about income producing activities. Instead of booking parties, I’m keeping track of “how many emails do I have to send to get offered a paper” and stuff like that.

Feel free to include any additional comments here: I’d thought about keeping up with MK just to get half off my makeup. Then I found out you have to make a certain level to earn that. SHE LIED about this. She said “you buy for one and sell for two” and when I asked her if there was a minimum or quota, she said it was entirely up to me. Who would purposely choose not to make a profit? Wouldn’t I just be a customer with a log-in number?
<img
