Federal Reserve to be audited by House committee

The massive seat of control over the US Economy and monetary policy, the Federal Reserve, will most likely finally come under close scrutiny by federal investigators. Rep. Barney Frank has finally pushed forward action on a bill, originally introduced by Rep. Ron Paul in 1983, that will bring important public eyes to the inner workings of this financial behemoth.

“We will subject them to a complete audit,” Frank said, explaining that he has been working with Paul, a Texas Republican, on the bill and expects it to pass as part of a broader financial regulatory overhaul in October.

The only problem is that the audit wouldn’t happen until 2011. Absurd.

Most modern, Western Christians believe in a rapture; a time when Jesus will return to earth and take all the faithful back into heaven with him, leaving the unbelievers here to suffer. So what happens to your pets then?

Well, worry no further! Eternal Earth-Bound Pets, USA will make sure that your pet is taken care of in case animals don’t care too much for heading up through the pearly gates.They offer the service of matching your pet up with a secular, pre-screen pet lover who will care for your pooch in case it gets left behind. The service only costs $115, plus $15 per extra pet, and the contract lasts 10 years.

Enoch theme released for Cyanogen’s Android Mod

My HTC Dream running the Android OS came in the mail a few months ago – and I have not put it down since. Gained Root access the first couple days, hacked it with a ROM by JesusFreke and stalked around the XDA Devloper’s forum for information on gaining more access and speed on my killer phone.

See, when T-Mobile released the G1 (as they called it), it was running version 1.1 of the Android operating system. It was slow, bulky, and missing a lot of features that other mobile devices in the same price range had – video recording, multi-touch, and an on-screen keyboard…among other things. But, dedicated Dream users hacked away until they found a way to root and unlock the potential of the phone’s full capabilities. And then came Cyanogen.

Cyanogen started releasing optimized versions of the v1.5 (Cupcake) Android operating system with all kinds of tweaks and extras. As time went on, he started backporting features from other Android versions, or future versions that have yet to be released on the market. And his version of the Android – dubbed CyanogenMod (CM for short) – quickly became one of the most used ROMs for Android. I have been running it on my Android ever since, but his focus is on speed – not looks – and the CyanogenMod has been sporting the default Android theme since release.

And so we come to Enoch. Enoch is a clean, simple, and dark theme for Android. It sports a transparent lockscreen, sticker icons by David Lanham, and custom smilies. Smooth lines, no over-glossing, and blue highlights are the signature – making this theme easy on the eyes. Diebold voting software includes Steal Election Button v1.18.19

Software included on Premier Election Solutions’ (previously known as Diebold) voting machines has recently been revealed to contain a “Delete Logs” button. This allows a user to delete any of the voting logs in the machine with no backups or way to trace the original logs.

Auditing logs are required under the federal voting-system guidelines, which are used to test and qualify voting systems for use in elections. The logs record changes and other events that occur on voting systems to ensure the integrity of elections and help determine what occurred in a system when something goes wrong.

“Deleting a log is something that you would only do in de-commissioning a system you’re no longer using or perhaps in a testing scenario,” said Princeton University computer scientist Ed Felten, who has studied voting systems extensively. “But in normal operation, the log should always be kept.”

Yet the Diebold system in Humboldt County, which uses version 1.18.19 of Gems, has a button labeled Clear, that “permits deletion of certain audit logs that contain — or should contain — records that would be essential to reconstruct operator actions during the vote-tallying process,” according to the California report. (note: emphasis added)

Using Dropbox with Xfce

Started working with my older laptop again, so I decided to install Xubuntu. Xubuntu is the Xfce edition of Ubuntu Linux. A big part of my computing experience is the portibility of applications like Dropbox or Box.net – easily being able to synch files on my various computers is of upmost importance. However, Dropbox is designed to work along with Nautilus which is the default file manager in GNOME…and the default window manager in Ubuntu. But not Xubuntu which uses Thunar as it’s file manager.

But, it’s no problem – by simply following the instructions below you can get Dropbox to work side-by-side with Xfce and Thunar. We will basically just be starting a no-frills instance of Nauilus which causes Dropbox to start. The explanation will mostly be relevant to Ubuntu/Xubuntu users, but can simply be modified to other distros.

Requirements:

Install dropbox from source, or using the packages provided on the Dropbox site.
Type the following into the terminal:

nautilus --no-desktop --browser
```
This will start Dropbox, and the icon should appear in your system tray.
Log in, or sign up with a new account.
Now, in order to have Dropbox running every time you use Xfce, you need it to autostart. Just go to:
Menu -> Settings -> Settings Manager -> Autostarted apps -> Add
and add the following
```
/home/your_username/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
```

And that’s it! Dropbox should work normally now, synching your files perfectly. Now you can more stuff done.

Was trawling through all the backed-up feeds in Google Reader, when I came across this post over at PDXOcculture. It is a video depicting the bizarre and wondrous performance art of an Olivier de Sagazan. From what I can gather, it is a piece entitled (or part of a piece entitled) “When the face loses its face”.
