These Argyle diamonds are sought after by jewellers and collectors alike for the unique array of colours and stunning perfection of these stones. Mined from the mountainous Kimberly regions of north-western Australia, these all-natural stones are found in amazing colours of exotic pink, deep amber, sparkling yellow, and the classic, dazzling white. These Argyle diamonds are sought after across the globe, and they are the reason the Australian diamond industry has become so successful over the past century. It is estimated that Australia produces more than one-third of the world's total supply of diamonds every year! Annually, Australia's production now totals over 35 million carats.

Diamond finds have been occurring in Australia since the 1890s. Although Argyle diamonds did not become widely available until the 1970s, Australia's rich heritage of diamond production is a main reason for the priceless discovery of the Argyle mines. For many years, geologists searched and studied the terrain for the areas with the most promise of abundant diamond supplies. Throughout the 1970s, the geologists' search seemed fruitless, until October 2, 1979 when the geologists found one of the largest, richest diamond deposits around the world. While working in a creek near the great Lake Argyle, the geologists came across a few stones in creek. The geologists continued to back-track up the creek, finding many more diamonds. They had found one of the richest diamond deposits in the world. They named their discovery after Lake Argyle, calling the find the Argyle Mine.

Construction of the mine began in 1983 when the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture was created to finance, own, and operate the mine. The agreement was in full cooperation with the Australian government, and the development of the processing plant and open-cut mine was governed by a State Agreement.

Since its development, the Argyle diamond mine generates enough diamonds to boost Australia into becoming one of the world's largest producers of natural diamonds. By sheer volume, the mine has been able to produce over 35 million carats annually since 1993, and before that, the mine produced upwards of 40 million carats annually. The Argyle Mine has truly placed Australia on the main stage of the diamond industry. The Argyle Mine is also the world's only reliable supplier of the ultra-rare pink diamonds. One main reason that the mine is so successful is because it uses cutting-edge technology to mine the diamonds, making the mining processes economical and efficient.

Argyle diamonds are classified into three main categories. The diamonds are labelled by colour. Each diamond is identified as pink, champagne, or white. Pink and champagne are graded by intensity of colour, while white diamonds are graded for their lack of colour. Diamonds from the Argyle Mine have two unique features that distinguish them from other diamonds. For one, these stones are much harder than diamonds from other parts of the world. Also, the Argyle stones will fluoresce blue when placed under ultra-violet light.

The headquarters of Argyle Diamonds is located in the Western Australian capital of Perth. The large shipments of diamonds are sent here to the modern cutting and polishing factory. Argyle picks only the top quality stones to be polished at this facility. The process of sorting has been simplified over the years through technological advances in machines that sort the diamonds by size. Then, sophisticated equipment separates the diamonds according to colour and shape. Finally, the valuation of each stone still must be made by a human eye. Argyle employs many professional diamond sorters to individually examine each stone and make decisions based on size, shape, clarity, and colour.
This 45.52 carat steel blue diamond is currently on display at the Smithsonian. The legends of the ill-fortune and curse bestowed on the possessor of the Hope Diamond are many. This diamond was donated to the Smithsonian in 1958. The Hope was originally a rather flat, blocky 110-carat rough.

The Dresden Green stands out among the natural colored diamonds. It is the largest green diamond in the world weighing 40.70 carats. This diamond is historic, large and has a natural green color with a slight blue overtone. These facts make it virtually priceless.

The Conde Pink is a pear shaped and weighs 9.01-carats. This pink diamond was once owned by Louis XIII.

The Tiffany Yellow diamond a beautiful canary-yellow octahedron weighing 287.42 in the rough (metric) carats discovered in either 1877 or 1878 in South Africa. The gem after cutting boasts the extraordinary weight of 128.54 carats. And until recently, was the largest golden-yellow in the world.

The Koh-I-Noor ( Mountain of Light ) is now among the British Crown Jewels. This diamond weighs 105.60 carats. First mentioned in 1304, it is believed to have been once set in Shah Jehan's famous peacock throne as one of the peacocks eyes.

The Agra is graded as a naturally colored Fancy Light Pink and weighs 32.34 carats. It was sold for about 6.9 million in 1990. Since this sale, it has been modified to a cushion shape weighing about 28.15 carats.

The Transvaal Blue is pear cut. This blue diamond weighs 25 carats. It was found in the Premier Diamond Mine in Transvaal, South Africa.

The Great Chrysanthemum was discovered in the summer of 1963, in a South African diamond field. This 198.28-carat fancy brown diamond appeared to be a light honey color in its rough state. However, after cutting, it proved to be a rich golden brown, with overtones of sienna and burnt orange.

The Taylor-Burton Diamond is a pear-shaped 69.42 carat diamond. Cartier of New York purchased this diamond at an auction in 1969 and christened it "Cartier." The next day Richard Burton bought the diamond for Elizabeth Taylor. He renamed it the "Taylor-Burton". In 1978, Elizabeth Taylor put the diamond up for sale. Prospective buyers had to pay $2,500 each to view the diamond to cover the costs of showing it. Finally, in June of 1979, the diamond was sold for nearly $3 million dollars.
A wedding ring is a piece of jewelry which will be worn everyday of your life to signify your love and fidelity to your significant other. That being said, you want to ensure you choose the perfect ring, which can be difficult for someone who is inexperienced in this area. Luckily we can help you through the steps of finding the perfect wedding ring for the special person in your life.

The first thing to consider is the kind of metal you want for your wedding rings. Most wedding rings are found in yellow gold, white gold or platinum. These forms of metal vary in price and most likely this decision will be quite easy since most women already know what kind of ring they want.

The next step is choosing the stone for the ring. You will need to decide which kind of stone you want as well as the shape of the stone. Diamonds are still the most popular choice when it comes to stones for wedding rings however colored stones such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires are becoming more and more popular.

The last step is to find a reputable jeweler who you will be comfortable purchasing such an expensive piece of jewelry from. Perhaps it is best to use a jeweler who one of your friends or family members have already used and would recommend for you because of such great results.

If you are like most couples who are marrying, you will likely choose a diamond wedding ring. If you are doing so, you may want to keep the four C's in mind while doing so. The four C's are the diamond's color, cut, clarity and carat weight.

1. Color - Diamonds are available in number of colors and shades including white, yellow, green, blue and pink. The color range starts at D and moves through the alphabet towards Z. The scale moves from white to yellow as it makes its way through the alphabet.

2. Cut - The cut of the diamond is what gives the diamond personality. Diamonds which are cut well will be bright and sparkly, however diamonds that are cut poorly may end up looking dull and boring. Choosing and making sure the cut is perfect is a crucial step in the overall outcome of your wedding ring.

3. Clarity - An inclusion in a diamond is an imperfection inside the stone which will greatly affect the overall worth of the ring. The size, color and position of the inclusions in your ring affect the clarity of the diamond. You want to ensure the diamond has good clarity.

4. Carat Weight - A carat is divided into 100 equal parts (also known as points). Therefore a one carat diamond equals 100 points; half carat equals 50 and so on. When the diamonds are loose (before they are mounted on the ring), the weight is easy to determine, however, after the diamond has been mounted only a gemologist can determine the weight of the diamond(s).

Take your time when choosing a wedding ring for yourself or for your significant other. A wedding ring is a sign of your everlasting love to one another and is something that will be cherished for the rest of your lives.

A diamond is judged by professionals on how 'clear' it is, and the stone is then placed into a category.

FL, IF - these ratings flawless or Internally Flawless represents the highest grade in this area. Such stones are extremely rare and hence invariably very expensive.

VVS1, VVS2 - These ratings represent a diamond which is only 'very very slightly included'. 'Included' means, essentially, occluded or cloudy. Inclusions of non-diamond material or structure are responsible for lack of perfect clarity. Despite the ominous sounding word, these gems are very high quality. The flaws can only barely be seen under 10 x magnifications.

VS1, VS2 - Very Slightly Included ratings represent high quality stones. No flaw is visible to the naked eye.

SI1, SI2 - Slightly Included gems contains flaws that are visible under 10 x magnifications and may just barely be seen by those with very sharp eyes. Beyond having good eyesight, though, one needs to know what to look for. Generally, non-experts won't notice much of anything.

I1, I2, I3 - These are mediocre quality stones that may still look very nice. But they have visible flaws when one looks closely that will reduce the brilliance of the stone's appearance.

Color:

Beyond the degree of clarity, diamonds - though usually thought of as clear or 'white' - can come in any of hundreds of colors. Fashions change and in one era what might be considered a flaw will be highly valued by the next generation. Color in a diamond is actually created by the impurities that mix with the diamond's carbon structure.

A 200-carat blue diamond in the Smithsonian (the Hope Diamond), for example, is valued not only for its unusually large size. Its rare and pure color is also a significant factor.

Blue, pink and yellow are among the most common colors found in ring stones.

E diamonds are also considered colorless. Any impurities are in trace amounts detectable only by experts with special tools.

F are also graded colorless, but a slight color may be seen by an expert.

G-H are near colorless. Non-experts can detect some shading if they look closely, but these can still be high quality diamonds.

I-J Near colorless diamonds in which the color is slightly detectable. Still have a very good value.

K-M are stones in which the color is highly noticeable. Observe, though, that these ratings are for diamonds that are ranked according to how little color they have. As a result, many will find a yellow diamond quite beautiful.

What's important is to have the color be uniform. Most people still consider even a small spot of color to be a flaw. Of course, that too is simply a matter of taste and some future trendsetter may decide such diamonds are worth even more.

Cutting:

One factor that is difficult to rank in terms of price or quality is how the stone is cut. That's because, to a very large extent, which cut is better is a matter of taste. A Round-cut can be just as beautiful as an Oval; a Square-Cut may be just as lovely as a Princess-cut gem (rectangular). Other common shapes are the Marquise, the Pear, Emerald cut, Trilliant (a wedge shape), Radiant, Cushion and Heart shaped.
The ability to view, wear and enjoy a beautiful gem each day parallels the veneration of a Chagall or Matisse with the additional benefit that historically there will be accumulated escalation in value.

As with all major purchases much like real estate, automobiles and fine art, acquiring the fundamentals of the subject at hand will help to avoid the many pitfalls which will invariably turn up. My overview, as a Graduate Gemologist and veteran jeweler will confidently provide the information necessary to make an informed and careful purchase.

Most of us are familiar with carat weight, clarity and color grades. We will summarize those attributes, focusing on the round brilliant diamond and then concentrate on more subtle aspects such as cut grade, finish grade, symmetry and fluorescence. A review of diamond certification will round out the buying guide.

In selecting a diamond, the first question that should be asked, with disregard for all the technical jargon is: Is the diamond face up gorgeous and stunning? A balanced amount of white light and spectral colors should emanate from the gem with a scintillating interplay of reflective flashes from the individual facets. In examining and appraising many diamonds over the years I have come across examples which have had close to flawless clarity grades combined with high-color grades (i.e. VVS1, E) and noted that the diamonds had very little visual life to them. The reason for this is that the diamonds were cut shallow, (a window stone) or deep, (dark in the center) or the arrangement and positioning of facets degraded the interplay of light. All these factors head up under cutting grade, which in my opinion is the elemental dynamic of a fine diamond.

Our first item to evaluate will be carat weight. Carat weight is exactly that; a weight rather than a measurement. The word "carat" originates from the Greek name for carob or locust tree. The weight of one average dried carob seed was used as a unit of measurement in gem trading. Its actual modern counterpart would be 1/5th gram or 200 milligrams. In pricing diamonds, decimal fractions of carat weights such as .25ct. .50ct., .75ct., offer specific price windows per carat which change with each uptick in the fraction. With two diamonds of equal clarity and color in hand, one weighting .99ct. and one weighing 1.00ct., the .99ct. diamond will be substantially less expensive then the full one carat diamond. This can be an advantage to the individual who desires the size of a 2.00ct. Diamond but is willing to accept a 1.99ct. Diamond of equal quality and apparent size for a reduced price.

Our next category, clarity grades require careful consideration when shopping for a diamond. Clarity grades refer to the number, position and size of inclusions which interrupt the free flow of light in a faceted diamond. Most inclusions are actually additional diamond crystals within the host crystal yet there are more than twenty-four different minerals which may make up additional crystal inclusions. Top grades begin at internally flawless to VVS1-VVS2 (very-very slightly imperfect), VS1-VS2 (very slightly imperfect), and SI1-SI2 (slightly imperfect) I1-I2-I3 imperfect. For practical purposes all clarity grades from internally flawless to VS2 will visually look the same with the unaided eye. Slight inclusions will only be visible with a 10 power loop or microscope. For this reason, unless investment grade diamonds are desired, a diamond of VS1 or VS2 clarity grade is an excellent choice. A grade of SI1 can also be a beautiful if the inclusions are both light in color and distributed towards the outside perimeter of the diamond where they are less visible. If one considers the full production of diamond mining, only the top 20% will be of clarity grades high enough for jewelry purposes. Of that 20% only the top one or two percent of diamonds will be of the flawless/near flawless categories. This mathematical reality is the reason that an internally flawless 1.00ct diamond of D color will at current prices sell for over $20,000. In contrast a diamond weighing 1.00ct. With numerous large inclusions (I2-I3) might sell for $1,000 or less. The rest of production will be used for manufacturing/drilling purposes. Considering the long term financial outlook, it is best to consider a higher clarity diamond for rarity, resale and trade-up purposes.

Color grading relates to the inherent body color which a diamond possesses. Diamonds naturally appear in an array of colors with Red and Blue being the rarest, but for our purposes here we will refer to diamonds beginning with colorless to slightly yellow. A diamond of fine color within this context will mean a diamond with absence of color! The color grading system begins with the letter D, no color, to Z, fancy yellow. The first grouping of letters including D-E-F are considered colorless and do not have any visual discernable body color. The next group is G-H-I-J and is near colorless followed by K-L-M, which have a slight yellow cast. Most of the diamonds sold on the market will be fall into these color groupings. As in clarity grading, diamonds without noticeable body color are rarer then diamonds with a slight amount of yellow or brown body color. When evaluating a diamond, take into account that the first five letter grades of D through G will afford a diamond of excellent mirror like qualities when other grading factors are held to the same higher bar. Diamonds with grades of J or lower will tend to visually look as if there was a thin coat of interceding wax which slightly lowers a full resplendent reflection of white and spectral light. My own personal choice of color grades would be E or F color. There is the benefit of obtaining both a colorless gem and the better pricing compared to a top D grade. It should be notated that diamonds are difficult to color grade even by a trained gemologist without master comparison sets. It is also true that mounted diamonds may have the appearance of being of higher or lower color depending on the type of the metal utilized (platinum, yellow & white gold) and the method of setting, such as prong, bezel, pave or burnish type.

With our terminology at hand, we can now look at the interaction between clarity and color grades with respect to the pricing and the overall beauty of the diamond. If you had two diamonds to choose from, one which was graded VVS1 clarity with J color and the other diamond was VS2 and G color and both were the same price, which diamond would you choose? Answer: VS2, G. the VS2 G will be the finer quality diamond based on a the higher color characteristic coupled with a visually eye-clean diamond. The VVS1-J will be free of almost all inclusions yet have a slight yellow body color. To summarize, in this instance, the color grade supersedes the clarity grade in significance.

To continue with the major evaluating criteria of the modern brilliant diamond, we will turn to the cut grade which is of crucial magnitude in selecting a diamond. Until just recently, it was usually overlooked, even by jewelers. The modern brilliant ideal cut diamond was first described in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky an engineer by training and member of a Belgium diamond cutting family. He studied the refractive index of diamonds, (the way light is bent as it travels through the gem) and came up with the cutting angles that would best return the maximum and most balanced amount of light in a round brilliant diamond. Most of the diamonds cut since then did not follow his parameters. By circumventing the best cutting angles as described by Tolkowsky, diamond cutters were able to fashion heavier and larger diameter (i.e. --more expensive ) diamonds but consequently sacrificing brilliance and beauty and in some cases durability. This method of diamond cutting resulted in saving more carat weight from the original rough diamond with the resulting higher profits.

Fortunately with a modern emphasis on quality and higher standards, the cut grade has become prevalent. It is only recently that both the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS) diamond grading labs began evaluating cut grade on certificates. With the American Gem Society, the best cutting grade available is rated "0." with higher digits signifying a lower level of cut grade. The AGS cut grade refers to the cumulative average of the diamonds light performance, proportion factors and finish. GIA's diamond grading certificate has cut grade ratings of excellent, very good and good as pertains to cut, polish and symmetry. With either one of these diamond grading certificates a customer can evaluate the quality of a diamonds overall brilliance. Cut grade also encompasses attributes such as polish lines, pits, misalignment of facets, off-center table, naturals, extra facets, wavy girdle (perimeter), misshapen facets and many other variations of a diamonds which effect the magnificence of a round brilliant diamond.

Our concluding and sometimes underestimated feature of diamond grading is fluorescence. Fluorescence refers to luminescence (emission of light) which is activated by invisible radiation such as ultraviolet light. Fluorescence is present in approximately 65% of gem quality diamonds and will be noted on any of the diamond certs as negligible to strong fluorescence. A diamonds fluorescence is visible when exposed to sunlight or a black light causing the diamond to emit colors which may appear blue to purple with more rare overtones of green, pink and yellow. These additional colors will mask the true body color a diamond, even a "D". Generally if a diamond is noted as being "negligible" or "faint" fluorescence, the overall effect on the diamond will be minimal. With a medium to strong fluorescence grade the effect can be detrimental to the overall beauty of the diamond and as a result should significantly decrease the cost and value of the diamond.

In summary, the true value of a round brilliant diamond will be a combination of many different natural occurring and human influenced factors. The skill of a diamond cutter can add value to a medium to fine clarity and color diamond by bringing out the best in proportions, polish and symmetry.
The exhibit will feature several famous and important works by Cartier, one of which is my favorite necklace from the Tutti Fruitti collection.

Nicknamed "Tutti Fruitti" by Cartier in the 1970's because of its resemblance to an Indian fruit salad, the famous colorful Mogul style inspired necklace was commissioned from the House of Cartier by Daisy Fellowes in 1936. Marguerite Severine Philippine, known as Daisy, was born in Paris in 1890 into a world of wealth and nobility. Her mother was Isabelle Blance Singer, daughter to the sewing machine inventor Isaac Singer, and her father was the fourth Duc Decazes et de Glucksbierg. In the 1920's Daisy became one of the most elegant, glamorous and interesting woman in Europe. She was a pioneer in fashion, knowledgeable about art history and a great hostess all in one. American Vogue noted that she had an inborn taste for dress and graciousness. She also became known for her large and important jewelry collection which included several Carter pieces.

During the 1930's European interest in Indian culture became popular as traveling to India became easier. The wealthy tourists traveled throughout the country on the Darjeeling Express and bought ruby, emerald and sapphire beaded necklaces. Enamored with the bejeweled elephants of Jaipur, they returned to Paris with the gemstones as souvenirs of their trip. Cartier then transformed the colorful gems into fine jewelry. Trendsetters like Misia Sert, Daisy Fellowes, Ganna Walska, Mrs. Harrison Williams and the Duchess of Windsor all began wearing Indian style jewels created by Cartier to compliment their lavish Indian theme parties Elsie de Wolfe imported real elephants to her villa in Versailles for one of the soirres.

Cartier's tutti-fruitti designs were a fusion of Persian and Hindu decorative motifs which reflected the Mughal Empire's exotic look. This appealed to the westerners who became captivated with the Orient at the time. Carved sapphires, emeralds and rubies were engraved in naturalistic leaf, flower and berry motifs and attached to a pave diamond stem, with small diamonds inset into some of the gems that resembled berries, all this set into platinum or gold. Each bracelet, necklace, earring and ring which Cartier made were of an individual style and not duplicated. This new style of colorful Indian jewelry was featured in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar as the "very height of fashion."

The Oriental tutti-fruitti jewelry began in 1901 when Pierre Cartier was asked to create an Indian necklace for Queen Alexandra, wife of Edward VII, for the celebration of India becoming a part of England's Empire. The Queen was in need of matching jewelry to be worn with her Indian gowns sent to her by Lady Curzon from India. Jacques Cartier traveled to India in 1911 for the coronation of Georges V at the Delhi Durbar where he met and became friends with India's Maharajahs. As Jacques was interested in purchasing the beautiful gems from India the Indian princes were asking Cartier to redesign their existing jewels into a European style, which resulted in many years of patronage and friendship. The traditional Indian enameled jewelry and engraved gemstones inspired the designers of Cartier's Art Deco jewelry which translated into the usage of black enameled paired with pink corals.

When Jean Toussaint joined the House of Cartier in 1910, she understood the importance of how a woman of fashion should wear this bold colorful style of jewelry. An elegant young woman Jean Toussaint wore Indian gemstone jewelry years before it became in vogue. She worked with Charles Jacqueau in Paris and Georges Genaille in New York in the creative department of Cartier during the 1920's and 1930's in the designing of the Indian Hindu Collection. Most of the collection was set in platinum in a very feathery light style so the stones seem to be in a collection with out any metal at all, which truly resembled a bowl of exotic fruit. Cartier also used a bold yellow gold with the colorful gems and Cartier brought this new style into fashion almost overnight. Vogue proclaimed in 1933 that the "Indian Jewels started a new gold rush." Cartier exhibited in the Exposition in 1931 Indian emerald bead tiara and won a prize.

Daisy Fellowes tutti fruitti necklace went through many transformations over the years. Originally purchased in June 1928 as a string of emerald and sapphire beads with a fringe of thirteen oval sapphire briolettes capped by foliate platinum mounts set with diamonds and baguette diamond stems with the tassel cord as a fastener. The next year Daisy purchased a bracelet with carved emerald buds with carved ruby leaves and two larger sapphires carved as bud motifs.

Again in 1936 she decided to combine both the necklace and the bracelet with another bracelet (which was not identified). Daisy commissioned Cartier to transform the original necklace and two bracelets into one new necklace. Lavabre, the work master for Cartier, transformed the combination including 250 extra gemstones supplied by Cartier into an exciting and sensational 'Collier Hindou' (Hindu Collar). Made in platinum and white gold set with several marquise baguette and round diamonds, thirteen briolette blue sapphires which weigh146.9 carats in total, two leaf shaped curved sapphires weigh 50.80 and 42.45 carats respectively, a strand of sapphire beads, one cabochon sapphire, strand of cabochon emeralds, leaf shaped carved rubies, smooth and carved ruby beads and cabochon rubies. Photographs by Cecil Beaton of Daisy wearing the necklace were published in January 1937 issue of Vogue. In 1951 Daisy wore her incredible Tutti Fruitti Hindu Collar to the famous Beistegui masked ball in Venice. The photographs of her in costume wearing the large colorful Hindu Collar became legendary.

The final version of the famous Daisy Fellowes Tutti Fruitti necklace as we know it today was completed in 1963. Daisy commissioned Cartier to redesign it for her daughter, the Comtesse de Casteja, as a wedding necklace. The silk cords were removed and the two large carved sapphire buds were used for the clasp. The center which was originally designed as a clip became a fixed smaller 'center piece' by placing the two square carved emeralds in a linear form rather than side by side. Some of the carved ruby and emerald leaf motifs were removed to the sides of the necklace from the front. The finished necklace is now known as "Tutti Fruitti" and not the Hindu Collar. Daisy Fellowes was a true connoisseur of fine gems and patron of Cartier. She enabled jewelry to be created during a time of economic depression which is art history for us to appreciate today. In May 1991 Daisy's Tutti Fruitti Indian style necklace was the highest price paid in history for a Cartier Jewel sold at auction for 2 million dollars Janet Deleuse
Sapphire is said to preserve the wearer from envy and to attract divine favor which gave them the power to influence spirits. It is believed that "fraud was banished from its presence" and the stone enabled the ancient sages to hear and understand the most obscure of oracles. This may be the reason why the Bishop of Rennes used sapphires in ecclesiastical rings as late as the twelfth century. The star sapphire was called the 'stone of destiny' because the three crossed lines (which are small beams of light reflected from the stone) represented faith, hope and destiny. Some also refrence the star sapphire as referring to the lights from the Star of Bethlehem.

The oldest sapphire jewelry found dates back to the 7th century worn by the Etruscans. The Greeks, Egyptians and Romans later adopted the stone in jewelry. The mining of sapphires themselves in Sri Lanka is known to have been before the time of Buddha in 544 B.C. Marco Polo's travels took him to the 'Island of Serendb', or known as Sri Lanka, where he describes the beautiful stones. In the writings of DeBoot in 1609, the Germans revered the sapphire as a 'victory stone'.

The Hindus, Burmese and Sinhalese recognized that ruby and sapphire were of the same mineral long before the Europeans did. It wasn't until 1800 it was documented that ruby and sapphire are both gem varieties of the mineral corundum. This mineral is found in many different colors which are due to the traces of different metallic oxides incorporated in the stone as impurities. Sapphires can be yellow, pink, violet, green, brown and orange in addition to the classic varieties of blues. Padparadscha, a true orange sapphire, is named from the Sinhalese word for 'lotus flower' and are incredibly vibrant and rare.

Derived from the Greek word sapphirus, the word sapphire actually means blue. In the Middle Ages this term was applied to the blue stone lapis lazuli, which caused confusion between the two stones. It is said that the Ten Commandments were written on a sapphirus stone, which refers to the lapis lazuli.

The American Museum of Natural History houses one of the largest finest quality star sapphires including a 536 carat. example called the Star of India. One of the largest known rough sapphires is a 2,302 carat which Norman Maness spent 1800 hours carving the form of the head of Abraham Lincoln.

The most valuable blue sapphires have the color of an intense blue without color zoning and internal flaws. Color zoning refers to variation of intensity within the stone, exhibiting deeper blue hues while other areas in the stone may appear lighter. Many sapphires are too dark in color, especially those from Thailand and Australia. These are generally the least expensive. Sapphires which are too light in color are also inexpensive. The most valuable sapphires are well cut, intense but even color blue stones. A blue sapphire can often be confused with stones similar in color such as benitoite, iolite, kyanite, spinel, tanzanite, tourmaline, and irradiated blue topaz (originally white).

Since the early 1900's synthetic sapphires have been produced with properties identical to the natural mineral corundum and in 1947 synthetic star sapphires became all the rage and very popular especially for men's rings. Please refer to my earlier post on synthetic gems

Sapphires are formed in a syenite and pegmatite secondary deposits such as in the alluvial deposits from the weathering of the parent rocks which is called byon. Sapphire grows in the form of a hexagonal bi-pyramid of twelve triangular faces. With a hardness on the Mohs scale of a 9, the sapphire is quite durable. However, a sapphire should be handled with care because they are slightly brittle and if dropped on a hard surface they will develop internal cracks.

The most famous locality for fine sapphires is the district around Mogok in upper Myanmar. Other important sources for the stone have been Thailand and Cambodia. Gem deposits in this area are derived from basalt, an iron rich rock. Recently in 1980, gold miners found gem quality rubies and sapphires northwest of Hanoi in Vietnam. Sapphires of the magnificent fine 'cornflower blue' color come from India near the district of Kashmir. Sometimes this blue color is referred to as 'Ceylon Sapphire', but that may not be the source of the stone, rather a term used to identify the specific light violet blue color. Sapphires of many colors ranging from blue, violet, purple, yellow, orange, white, pink are found in Sir Lanka no other mine to date produces a greater variety of colorful hues. Sources of sapphires are found practically around the globe including: China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Australia, United States, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Malawi and Zimbabwe, Brazil, Colombia, Norway, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Romania and Borneo.

Mining sapphires in Mogok, Myanmar

Sapphires may be faceted cut in many different styles. For fine stones the step cut, oval and round is mostly used. Flawed, poorer quality sapphires are often cut into beads or used for carving. An ancient practice originally from Sri Lanka, is setting the stone in a closed setting with the back of the stone covered with the blue part of a peacock's feather to make the pale blue sapphire stones look more even and intense

In 1894 sapphire deposits were discovered in Yogo Gulch Montana, USA. This soon became an important source until the end of the 1920's. The color of the Montana sapphires vary from pale blue, steel blue to a pale violet blue. Tiffany Jewelers was one of the first jewelers to use Montana Sapphires. The mixture of the blue hues is striking when used together in a monochromatic design. An example of this is the incredible butterfly pin created by JAR which was exhibited in the French Masters Jewelry exhibit.

Jean Toussaint, nicknamed 'The Panther', worked with Peter Lemarchand at Cartier in the design department and created the collection called 'Great Cat Jewels.' In 1949 the Duchess of Windsor acquired one of the most famous diamond and sapphire panther pins which she frequently wore. Envy from other famous jewelry collectors, Barbara Hutton being one of the first, prompted orders for the magnificent panthers in varying poses from Cartier. The panther is crouched in a life like pose on a large perfect round cabochon star sapphire weighing 152.35 carats. The Panther image has since become one of Cartier's most iconic designs and has been incorportated into jewelry and watches ever since.

One of the most famous art deco sapphire and diamond necklaces was owned and worn frequently by the owner of Palm Beach's Mar-A-Lago, Marjorie Merriweather Post. Called the "Blue Necklace", this Art Deco style piece was created by Cartier in 1936 and made with hundreds of square, round, and baguette cut sapphires and diamonds. The large and perfectly blue cushion shape central sapphire is set in a diamond deco motif. The necklace can be unclipped to two seperate bracelets and the center sapphire deco motif can be worn separately as a brooch. Mrs. Merriweather Post was known to have worn at least one of these pieces or the entire necklace everyday.

One of the most creative cabochon necklaces mixed with an interesting design and color combination was by Bulgari. Created to commemorate the exhibition of Tutankhamen treasures in 1972, this Egyptian style necklace is unlike any other sapphire jewelry. Using large cabochon cut blue sapphires, black onyx and salmon pink coral with sprinkles of diamonds this necklace is designed using the lotus flower motifs. I think it represents Egyptian art form both in colors and in the mantle style jewelry worn by the royalty. This is a fitting piece, with the Tutankhamen exhibit once again on display in 2009 at the de Young museum in San Francisco.

An interesting jeweled sapphire necklace was designed in 2005 by Bulgari for the movie "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" Set with 169 natural different colored sapphires weighing a total of 395.89 carats and small bars paved in diamonds at different angles.

Many people are starting to favor the fancy, vivid colored diamond gem stones over the traditional transparent or white, diamond. Some diamonds are found in their natural colors when they are mined, others become colored by gemologists and jewelers during a treatment process. In order to make them more affordable to the average consumer, companies have begun color treating diamonds of lower grades in order to take a less desirable yellow or brownish tinted diamond and make it into a beautiful, brightly colored diamond.

Colored diamonds can be treated by a process called irradiation, which uses a high heat system to alter the color of a diamond. Other diamonds are treated by painting.

Fancy Colored Diamonds

While many diamonds are inspected and valued based on their colorless qualities, there are people who prefer the fancy colored diamonds that come in vivid hues of greens, yellows, reds, pinks and all the different colors in between.

Some colored diamonds are that way naturally. If a diamond has nitrogen in it, it often has a yellow tint to the stone. If the gemstone has been effected by radiation, the gem may turn green.

Other colored diamonds have been treated to obtain their color, and this allows people with lower budgets to purchase the fancy colored diamonds. Gemologists have found ways to alter the colors of diamonds to get any shade or hue desired.

The grading process for colored diamonds is slightly different than that of the transparent diamond. First, a colored diamond is graded based on the primary hue, the blue or pink or red color that makes up the majority of the diamonds color. Second, they are graded based on the intensity of that color. A very intense, naturally colored diamond is more rare than a less intense diamond, and therefore more expensive. A treated diamond will cost less than a naturally colored diamond in most instances.

Synthetic Diamonds

Most diamonds are found and mined by miners, but more recently, scientists have come up with ways to create synthetic diamonds. While a synthetic diamond is still a "real diamond", they are created within a laboratory instead of by nature in a mine.

Colored Diamond Names

Because fancy colored diamonds come in so many different shades, it can sometimes be difficult to interpret the name of the diamonds color. Often, you'll find two colors labeling the shade of a diamond, such as greenish blue. Each name has a primary color description, and some have a secondary color description. If a diamond is called "blue diamond", you can tell it will be a blue shaded diamond gemstone. If the diamond is called "greenish blue", you may wonder what that means. Is the diamond blue, or is it green? The color that is described with the "ish" at the end is considered the secondary color, and the other color, in this case blue, becomes the primary color. So a greenish blue diamond is mostly blue, with specks of green seen throughout the stone. If you come upon a diamond labeled "brown red", then the diamond will have equal amounts of both colors seen through the stone.
This semi- precious stone is found under the water sea or ocean. Some are cultured and some are natural. There are only two types of pearls, the one that lives in salt water and under the fresh water. Pearls are measured by millimeters not by carats the way other gemstones are being measured. Although pearls are not popular and the typical type of rings when it comes to engagement and wedding rings, they are considered by it's classic and timeless beauty.

There are various of colors to choose for. The most popular colors are white, black, creamy white, blue, green and pink. The most well known pearl color is the one with white and pink colors that are found in saltwater and also the most expensive one.

Pearls are now in demand for engagement and wedding rings for it completely looks adorable and classic when matches with other stones like the diamonds. You might think that pearls are simple. Yes, they maybe but the impact of having a simple but elegant engagement rings made of pearls is absolutely timeless. It goes well with other stones. It can be shaped as round or teardrop shaped which are common for ear rings and pendants. Imagine seeing a white and plain paper colored with rainbows. That's one of pearls personality. Simplicity is beauty. A white pearl symbolizes purity. A woman given this kind of engagement ring would certainly feel the sincerity of their man towards them.

Having pearl as a center stone sprinkled with diamonds for engagement rings is truly admirable by any human kind especially by women. The tahitian pearl diamond rings really looks pretty when combined. A black pearl looks stunning when sprinkled with diamonds. Victorian white pearl ring is also famous. The natural pearl, combined with diamonds, rubies, amethyst, sapphires, emerald, turquoise and peridot are just some of the gemstones that goes well with pearls. The advantage of considering pearls as stones for engagement rings is that, it goes well with any forms of metal. Silver, gold, white gold, platinum and titanium name it. Any of those choices will turn out to be a perfect combination. The usual ring settings for engagement or wedding rings made by pearls is that pearls are commonly used as a center stones then designed by other gemstones surrounding it. It only means one thing that a pearl engagement rings and wedding rings is the center of attraction. You will rarely see a ring that uses pearls as designs with other stones. Diamonds maybe the finest and the most expensive type of stones but pearls are timeless and classic.

Pearls looks more attractive during wedding. It perfectly matches well with the bride's dress. That's why a lot of brides wears jewelry made of pearls on their wedding day. It looks simple but elegant. It is a tradition and a unique choice for wedding rings. It doesn't matter if a pearl is natural or cultured, simple or enhanced, the important is a pearl engagement ring brought meaning and elegance to the love shared by couples.
The variety of jewellery has made it possible for every class to wear jewellery according to its purchasing power. You can give it as a gift, token of love or commitment to your relatives, friends and loved ones. It is a trend in these days to send marriage proposals with beautiful sapphire engagement rings instead of common gold rings. Sapphire represents sentiments, emotions and faithfulness for your loved ones. They are available in beautiful colors such as blue, pink and lemon yellow.

The common treatment of this stone is heat treatment. Treated sapphires are affordable and beautiful but the value and price of non treated sapphire is higher when compared to the treated ones. Proper treatment provides attractive look and beauty to sapphire engagement rings. Heat adds more life and color and gives a unique look to the stone therefore people like heated sapphires for proposal than non heated ones. Moreover the heat treatment does not lower its value as much as other treatments do. The sapphires of deep blue are more beautiful and valuable than dark or too light stones.

Selection of stone is not tough to prepare sapphire engagement rings. If you cannot decide on your own then you can get help from a gemologist. You should analyze that there should not be many inclusions in the stone. Moreover there should not be any damage or scratches on the surface of the gem else it will reduce the perceived value of the ring. The cutting of the sapphire should be neat and it should reflect the light evenly from its surface when held face up. The market is full with a variety of sapphire so you can compare them with each other to find the most suitable piece for you.

Diamond and sapphire rings are very commonly used by people as engagement rings. These gems are set in the ring with skill that they provide a very high perceived value to the ring. You may use diamonds or sapphires separately or combine them to get a unique look. These gems should be examined by some gemologist to make sure that you are purchasing a good quality and valuable gem. These engagement rings are unique, meaningful and beautiful in every sense for your proposal because they convey your love and commitment.
Gemologists have developed new ways to create versions that are affordable for the average person - by treating less desirable diamonds. These less desirable diamonds are treated with irradiation followed by intense heat. This turns brown and yellowish diamonds into beautifully colored diamonds that you can afford. This produces stunning greens, blues, yellows, reds, purples and other colors. These colors are considered permanent, but there is a possibility they could change during repairs if a high heat is used.

Treatments like irradiation make it possible for more people to own these vividly colored diamonds. Most natural colored diamonds are rare and also extremely expensive. When shopping for colored diamonds you need to assume that any affordable fancy color diamond has been treated. Ask about the stones origin and request to view a lab certificate to verify authenticity.

Synthetic colored diamonds are another option if owning a colored diamond is something you desire but cannot quite afford. They are real diamonds, but they are created in a lab.

Natural fancy color diamonds get their coloring from different trace elements present in the stones, such as nitrogen, which produces a yellow diamond. Diamonds can be colored by exposure to radiation during its creation. An example of a diamond affected by radiation is a Green diamond.

Another way that a natural colored diamond gets color is by its inclusions. Regarded as flaws and undesirable in a colorless diamond, inclusions give unique tones and brilliant flashes of color in a fancy color diamond. Remember that Natural fancy colored diamonds are very expensive, any colored diamond labeled to be sold as natural should be accompanied by a certificate from a respected grading lab.

A "fancy" diamond is a natural diamond that has color. These colors vary from red, green, purple, violet, orange, blue and pink - and most shades between. Fancy color shades vary from faint to intense.

The most famous diamonds in the world are Colored diamonds. The Tiffany Diamond, which is yellow and the Hope Diamond which is blue are colored diamonds. Colored diamonds have an amazing financial track record. The value has never decreased on wholesale level in more than 30 years. Blue and pink diamonds have doubled every 5 years of a strong economy. In the 1970's you could have bought a very high quality blue diamond for about 50K and today the very same stone would be worth between 2 and 3 million.

The first diamonds were mined in India, more than 2800 years ago. The diamonds that we find today are all extremely old. In fact, most are 900 million years old or more, with the oldest known diamond being 3.2 billion years old. Like snowflakes, each diamond is entirely unique. There are no two diamonds that are exactly the same.

There are many things to consider when learning how to buy a diamond, and you should never rush into buying a diamond without first doing a little research as to how the diamonds are priced.

The "4 C's"

Everyone has many things to consider when determining how to buy a diamond. All around the world, jewelers use the "4 C's" as a way of describing the value of a diamond. If you want to learn how to buy a diamond, you need to learn exactly what the 4 C's are, and how each aspect contributes to the value of the diamond.

The 4 C's are Cut, Clarity, Carats and Color.

How to Buy a Diamond based on Cut: The cut of a diamond describes how an artisan angles the gemstone to best reflect light through the diamond, causing it to sparkle. A quality cut brings out the beauty of a diamond and makes it more valuable, while a poorly cut diamond will sell for less because it isn't as brilliant or shiny.

How to Buy a Diamond based on Clarity: The clarity of a diamond refers to how clear the diamond is when you look through it. A perfect diamond is rare; most have inclusions and flaws, although many cannot be seen without magnification. When looking at a diamond for clarity, look to see if there are dark spots inside the diamond.

How to Buy a Diamond based on Carats: Larger diamonds cost more than smaller diamonds, even if the total carats of the diamonds are the same. For example, a single one carat diamond will cost you more than three diamonds set in a ring that add up to one carat. This is because larger diamonds are much more rare to find. When diamonds are cut, they lose about half their size.

How to Buy a Diamond based on Color: The actual color of a diamond is a personal preference. But diamonds that are colorless, known as white diamonds are the most rare and therefore cost the most. Diamonds also come in different shades, including yellow, green, blue and pink, among others.

Certificates and Appraisals

In addition to understanding what to look for in regards to the 4 C's when learning how to buy a diamond, you should also learn how to read certificates that describe details about the unmounted diamond and perhaps have any diamond you are interested in professionally appraised by an independent organization. You may not want to accept the appraisal done by the jeweler for the simple fact that they are biased and may appraise the diamond for slightly higher than it's actual worth in order to gain more money for the sale of the diamond.
So it's no surprise that a lot of these Bracelets came down the runway during fashion weeks in NY City, Paris and Milan. Designers still love these statement pieces and they're adding new twists, fun designs and budget conscious pieces so that we can all get in on the trend.

It seems like your outfit isn't complete anymore with the addition of at least one bangle bracelet. For summer, it was more about thin lightweight wire bangles that paired well with breezy fabrics. For fall, we're seeing a lot of heavier bangles and new takes on our old favorites. Textured Bracelets are a big hit this season, with bangles being wrapped in silk, ribbon and other feel good earthly elements. It's great to pair these with contrasting fabrics.

For the office, a heavier gold plated enamel bracelet is just the key for brightening up classic pieces. Or, choose black enamel colored Bracelets to compliment colorful dresses. These bracelets will take you from the office to happy hour with style and grace.

Earthy elements are still going this year, as wood, hammered brass and leather covered bangle bracelets take center stage. Again, texture and contrast are key, so play around with elements of soft and hard, edgy and feminine, structured and free-flowing.

Try taking summer's bangle bracelets into fall and incorporating a few new pieces to update the look.

For example, if you have a jewelry box full of gold plated bangles, add a thick gold bangle to the mix and call it day. Nowadays, it's more acceptable to try on piles of bangles than to leave home without one. So although you might not feel like shopping for cool weather clothes right now, you can still incorporate some of fall's latest and greatest jewelry trends into the current mix.

About the Author
Posted by Maria Lei, if you want to get more information about jewelry such as Necklaces, Bracelets and Cubic Zirconia Rings please vistit my website.

But that doesn't mean that you can't get the same look with a CZ cocktail ring that's a replica of one of your favorite designer pieces. Cubic Zirconia Cubic Zirconia Rings look the same as the real thing and they're incredibly affordable.

What would you say if someone told you that Cubic Zirconia Cubic Zirconia Rings often have better clarity than diamonds? Would you believe them? It's actually a true statement. Cubic Zirconia is a manmade synthetic material that is extremely durable, strong and high quality. Some stones are colorless, while others are available in just about any color of the rainbow. CZ cocktail rings are a great way to add some color to a cocktail dress, structured sheath or even jeans and a blouse.

This season, it's all about cocktail rings that have bright fluorescent colors like hot pink, Tropicana orange and citrus yellow. One pop of color from a CZ ring like this is all you need to make an outfit complete. Dark stones are also a popular choice, from silver pearls to black rhinestones. These versatile pieces can be worn with many things in your closet and will be a good purchase for years to come.

Whatever stone you choose, make sure it's a rock. That's the thing about Cubic Zirconia jewelry - it's meant to be fun. There's no point in wearing a small piece of costume jewelry that will get lost in your outfit or that has to compete for attention. Instead, wear something that is going to get you noticed time and time again. This is the only way to wear CZ Cubic Zirconia Rings - with confidence. So what are you waiting for? If it's a real diamond, you might be waiting a long time, but if it's sparkle and beautiful bling you want, that's available right now!

About the Author
Posted by Maria Lei, if you want to get more information about jewelry such as Necklaces, Bracelets and Cubic Zirconia Rings please vistit my website.
