Man accused of stealing from Madeleine McCann fund may face extradition to U.S.

The security consultant who was arrested in Oxford late November and is accused of stealing $494,000 from the Madeleine McCann fund, may be extradited to the U.S.

Kevin Halligen, 48, claimed to have high level security contacts in the U.S., who could provide him with satellite images of Praia da Luz on the Algarve in Portugal, the night Madeleine went missing. She vanished in May 2007, while her family was on vacation in the area.
Instead, according to the Daily Mail, Halligen gave her parents, Kate and Gerry, images from Google Earth's Web site.

In addition, the Mail reports that Halligen was allegedly spending money given to him to help search for Madeleine, on such things as first-class airline flights and luxury hotels.
The U.S. Department of Justice issued a warrant for his arrest for defrauding a London-based law firm out of funds, and using the money to purchase a mansion in Virginia.

Halligen was arrested at an Oxford hotel for failing to pay the bill he’d incurred during his stay. The alleged conman had been staying at the Old Bank Hotel with his girlfriend under a false name.
U.S. officials have until Jan. 28, 2010 to determine whether Halligen will be extradited to the states on fraud charges.

KATE and Gerry McCann will come face to face in a courtroom with the Portuguese policeman who accused them of being involved in the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine.

Madeleine McCann's parents will confront discredited former police chief Goncalo Amaral at a libel hearing next week where he will be accused of peddling distressing lies about them.

Mr Amaral was in charge of the botched investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine from the McCanns’ family apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

He was instrumental in naming Kate and Gerry as official suspects in the official investigation into what happened to their daughter.

And he published a book and a TV documentary claiming Madeleine was dead, entitled The Truth Of The Lie.

The McCanns will confront the former detective when he appears in court in Lisbon on December 11 to answer charges that he lied.

Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said last night: “Kate and Gerry are planning to be at the opening of the trial. They think it is important to be there for the beginning.”

Portugal’s attorney general officially cleared the McCanns as suspects.

The Civil Court judge begins to lisbon next 11 the interlocutory proceedings brought by the McCann family to the former coordinator of the PJ Gonçalo Amaral. The process also involves a publisher, a television channel and a media company.

Kate and Gerry McCann will attend the first day of trial, who are committed to continuing to search for his daughter Madeleine, who disappeared on 3 May 2007, the room where she slept in the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz (Lagos). A presence not confirmed by the Portuguese lawyer, Isabel Duarte, but some sources close to the couple as they give some.

The evaluation is based on the trial process, brought on by the McCanns in May and on behalf of three children, Sean, Amelie and Madeleine, and that was to withdraw the book "The truth of lies" and the documentary based on the same work. And to stop the sale of copyright abroad by publishing War and Peace and also prohibit the now retired from the Judiciary Police to continue to speak publicly about his theory of the case.

The lawyer said the argument spilled in the book "does not affect the image, good name, let alone treat them (McCann) so that it can be seen as degrading, cruel and inhuman." Amaral says that only comments on the results of research disseminated through CD by Prosecutor's Office in Portimão.

But The Mail on Sunday can reveal today that despite setting up a hotline for potential informants and witnesses, none of the hundreds of calls received by a call centre hired by Halligen, 48, was listened to by Oakley investigators - and Halligen also bragged to his colleagues that he had executed a series of peculiar tactics to find Madeleine.

A private eye whose company was paid £500,000 from a public fund to find Madeleine McCann squandered the money on a series of bizarre schemes that had no chance of locating the missing child.
Kevin Halligen, who claimed to have experience in the British secret services, was arrested last week in an Oxford hotel after an FBI manhunt over an unrelated £1.3million fraud case in America.
His investigations company, Oakley International, was taken on in March last year by the Find Madeleine Fund and her parents Kate and Gerry McCann.

He claimed to have hired an actor to pretend to be a 'drunken priest' who would seek confessions as he toured the bars of Praia da Luz, the resort where Madeleine disappeared in May 2007.
And he told colleagues that a family with a Madeleine lookalike daughter had been paid to set up home in a nearby resort in order to tempt out a potential kidnapper.

Meanwhile, a paper trail obtained by The Mail on Sunday shows that Halligen, a former director of a catering firm, launched an extraordinary spending spree on hotels, cigar bars, restaurants and luxury goods while he was in the pay of the Find Madeleine Fund, and in the period shortly after he was fired last summer.

Documents show that in his first two months as lead investigator in the search for Madeleine, Halligen spent £7,000 on a personal chauffeur.
A few months later, on a short trip to New York with a girlfriend, he lavished £1,600 on Salvatore Ferragamo leather goods, £5,500 on handbags, £500 on an Italian meal, £150 on a pair of designer glasses and £900 on a three-night stay at the five-star Renaissance Hotel.

And in a one-month visit to Washington, where he owned a £1.5million mansion, he spent more than £3,000 on dining out and £6,000 on a room at the US capital's Intercontinental Hotel.
He also paid out more than £50,000 on plumbing and mosaic tiling for his house in Great Falls, Virginia - a property in which he has never spent a night because of constant home-improvement work.
The revelations will dismay everyone who donated to the Find Madeleine Fund. But perhaps of most concern is the lack of attention paid to the hundreds of phone calls received by the Madeleine hotline.

Halligen and Oakley International, based in Washington, failed to listen to a single call received on the hotline set up for potential informants by Kate and Gerry McCann last year.
Johan Selle, the director of operations at iJet, the US firm that managed the Find Madeleine phone line, revealed that for a year nobody even asked his company if they could listen to any of the calls received.
Mr Selle said his operators, in Annapolis, Virginia, had answered 'hundreds of calls', but the information seemed wasted - possibly squandering valuable leads.

He said: 'We delivered Oakley a report with a summary of the calls and said if they wanted to come back they could listen to the recording, but nobody did.

'For someone with an understanding of the case it would be very easy for some to say that maybe 80 or 90 per cent of the calls were hogwash, but there may be a percentage where one would say maybe we should listen to this one or listen to that one. But our understanding is that this never took place.

'We are not sure whether Halligen provided our report to the family or to the trust or to those working with them or to the teams working after him, because no one came back to us.
'We sent the report to Oakley group and our assumption was that they were using it as a piece in the puzzle. But it appears that wasn't the case.'
The firm says it was not paid for it services by Halligen or Oakley International.

Two of Halligen's former colleagues in the investigation, John Taylor and Dr Richard Parton, said they became concerned early on in their working relationship with the self- styled 'super-spy'.
Dr Parton, whose company Psyintel was employed for its expertise on interview techniques, said he and his partner had been encouraged by Halligen to get involved with the high-profile case.
Halligen had also mentioned other future projects that could net them millions of pounds, although these schemes never came to fruition.

But Dr Parton said fears over Halligen's suitability for the job first arose when the private detective suddenly asked him to stop calling him Richard, the name by which they had known him for several years. He then also raised details of Halligen's extraordinary tactics to find Madeleine.

Dr Parton, who claims he was later left with an unpaid invoice for £50,000, said: 'It was very strange. I had met him years earlier and it had been Richard. Then before a meeting with some people who wanted a presentation on my techniques, I was asked to call him Kevin from then on. I thought it was odd but he was so secretive and that was just the way he was.
'Whenever we had a meeting he would also always immediately say that he needed to leave for a flight. Every time. He would always also try to get the conversation around to talking about the psychological characteristics of a sociopath.'

Dr Parton added: 'I repeatedly told him his investigators on the ground in Portugal were not doing a proper job but he insisted lots of things were going on I didn't know about.

'That is when he told me about some of his schemes, such as the drunken priest seeking confessions from people drinking in the bars of Praia da Luz and the family with a girl who looked similar to Madeleine. This family were set up, apparently, in a resort near to Praia da Luz just to sit and wait and see what happened.
'It was all such a waste of money and time.'

However, it was only later, when tape recordings of interviews undertaken in Praia da Luz were sent to Dr Parton and Mr Taylor, in Washington, that they started to fear the worst for the investigation.
Mr Taylor said: 'The quality of the interviews was terrible, very amateurish. The noise in the background was bad, the interview questions were useless and the subjects were irrelevant. I told them to stop wasting time and money on such low-key figures - homeless people and receptionists who knew nothing.'

Things came to a head after Halligen reneged on repeated promises to pay their invoice. Dr Parton said: 'I took him to one side and asked when I was due to be paid. Three days later he disappeared. He had fled to Rome with his girlfriend.'

It was then that Dr Parton and Mr Taylor started to contact others who had been hired by Oakley International. Mr Taylor added: 'He would hire lots of people to do work but only pay a few of them. Meanwhile, he was spending lots of money on his own lifestyle. It only gave the appearance that work was being done.'

They also contacted Maria Dybczak, a trade lawyer for the US Commerce Department, whom they understood to be Halligen's wife. It emerged she had agreed to go along with a fake wedding service to keep up appearances for Halligen.

Dr Parton said: 'She admitted she wasn't proud of it but she had been tricked, too. He claimed that a job he was doing with the CIA meant that he couldn't have his name on a marriage certificate.
'She was manipulated into going along with a fake wedding with an actor posing as a priest. He said they would get properly married a few weeks later, but that never happened.'
Shortly afterwards Halligen fled to Rome with a girlfriend, named in a writ filed by another former colleague as Shirin Trachiotis, a glamorous doctor based in Washington.

Almost immediately after arriving in Rome on their first-class Lufthansa tickets, Halligen withdrew hundreds of thousands of pounds more from Oakley International's bank accounts and spent £8,000 on a luxury hotel before slinking back to the UK a few months later.

Dr Parton said: 'He has left a trail of debts across America and the UK. But the horrible truth is that he stole from the McCanns what they really couldn't afford - time.'
Following a short hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court last week, Halligen was refused bail and was remanded in custody until December 2, when the next stage of his case for extradition will be heard.

They claim he took £1.3million as part of a deal to secure the release of Dutch business executives arrested in the Ivory Coast. Instead, it is claimed, he spent it on a mansion, a gift to his girlfriend, cash machine withdrawals and debit-card transactions.

Kate and Gerry McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell refused to be drawn on the details of Oakley's investigation, much of which, it is understood, the McCanns were unaware of. He said: 'The first phase of the contract was satisfactorily seen through, such as the setting up of the hotline. Towards the end of it there were question marks about delivery and the relationship was terminated.
'Given Mr Halligen is in custody it is inappropriate to comment further.'

A businessman hired to help look for Madeleine McCann and wanted by the FBI on fraud charges has appeared in court.

Kevin Halligen was arrested at an Oxford hotel on Tuesday and refused bail at London's City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

The 48-year-old from Surrey is facing extradition to the US, where he is wanted for an alleged £1.2m fraud.
The Irish national was hired by Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry, as a security consultant.
His Washington-based company, Oakley International, was paid about £300,000 to help search for Madeleine, who was nearly four when she vanished from an Algarve holiday flat on 3 May 2007.
The firm had initially been awarded a £500,000 contract, but the McCanns terminated the arrangement before paying any more fees.

'Bought mansion'

The US Department of Justice issued an indictment for Mr Halligen earlier this month, alleging he tried to defraud a London law firm of £1.2m ($2.1m).

Melanie Cumberland, acting for the UK government, told the court Mr Halligen was wanted in the US for taking money from the Dutch company Trafigura, via a London-based law firm.
She said he had been employed after the two executives had been arrested following a petrochemical spill on the Ivory Coast.

Instead, she said, he had spent £1m ($1.7m) on a mansion, £85,000 ($141,000) on a gift to his girlfriend and more than £26,000 ($43,000) in cash on other items.

She said when he had been arrested at the Old Bank Hotel in Oxford over a discrepancy in a bill of about £5,000, police had discovered he had already packed his bag to leave.
Refusing bail, Judge Howard Riddle said: "I note the gravity of the offences alleged and the high value involved.

"At this stage, comparatively little is known about his movements, how he came to be in this country and where he has been staying."
The court heard a full extradition request was likely to be submitted by the US authorities by the end of January.

A DODGY "detective" on the run accused of swindling the Madeleine McCann fund out of £300,000 was nicked last night - thanks to The Sun.

Kevin Halligen, 50, was led from his bolthole in handcuffs after our investigators staked out a luxury Oxford hotel then tipped off cops.

The fugitive whined to police: "How did you find me?"

'On Tuesday, the manager of the Old Bank contacted local police concerning this man called Kevin Halligen.

Alleged serial fraudster Halligen was just about to fly the coop when police swooped.

Detectives had been hunting him for months.

But it was Britain's No1 paper that finally found him.

Our team tipped off police that he and his lover were about to flee after we staked out their bolthole.

Halligen, who touts himself as a private investigator, is accused of cruelly targeting the fund launched to find missing Maddie so he could swindle it out of more than £300,000.

Last night cops who found him and his girlfriend with their bags packed were holding him over his unpaid bill at the plush Old Bank hotel in Oxford.

It was said to run into tens of thousands. But that, and the cash he is accused of taking from the Maddie fund, are the least of his worries.

The Dubliner is wanted by the FBI for a £1.2MILLION fraud.

Halligen got involved with anguished Kate and Gerry McCann a year after the 2007 disappearance of their daughter - then aged three - on a family holiday in Portugal.

He had set up his own investigation firm Oakley International in Washington and claimed to have worked for MI5 and the CIA.

Crucially he boasted his "contacts" in the US capital could provide hi-tech satellite imagery to help the search.

He won a £500,000 contract as the McCanns, both 41-year-old doctors from Rothley, Leics, prayed for clues.

Much of the cash is said to have gone on luxury hotels, chauffeured limos and first-class flights as he lived the high life.

Last night his bill at the Oxford hotel he checked into three months ago - under the alias Richard Stratton - was said to top £14,000 in drinks ALONE.

A source there said: "Halligen had actually packed his bags and was making arrangements to leave in a cab when the cops finally turned up.

"His face turned ghostly white - he got the shock of his life."

The Sun had watched just minutes earlier as he and his lover casually smoked a cigarette on the hotel terrace before their planned exit.

We previously spotted him in the bar, where he ordered a glass of wine for an elderly guest, barking: "Stick that on my room - it's on me."

Minutes later he whispered to another guest: "Of course, I have to keep a low profile.

"I'm a former member of the secret services so I can't attract attention."

Creditors are chasing him over £3million he is said to owe.

Halligen is said to have even conned an ex-director of the SAS. Major-General John Holmes, a former SAS commander, introduced him to business contacts - now said to be counting the cost.

He claimed: "We were all taken in."

Another alleged victim is Henri Exton - former national head of police undercover operations. He is said to be owed £100,000.

Washington lobbyist Andre Hollis claims to have lost £50,000 and top London lawyer Mark Aspinall is said - along with his company - to be owed £450,000.

Staff at the Oxford hotel told how Halligen loved to regale them with "hush-hush" talk about MI5, MI6 and the CIA.

The source said: "We just thought he was a bit of an eccentric."

The fresh appeal is focused on the area where Madeleine, three, went missing on May 3 2007 during a family holiday.

Kevin Halligen, 48, from Surrey, is wanted in the United States for allegedly conning a law firm out of $2.1m in fees which he spent on himself, including the purchase of a mansion.
The Washington-based businessman, who styled himself as a security expert with FBI and MI5 connections, with has not been arrested because officials in the United States do not know where he is.
Halligen’s firm, Oakley International, was given a six-month contract by the Madeleine Fund in 2008 to carry out detective work and review CCTV footage of possible sightings of the missing girl around the world, but was dropped after six months because of a lack of progress.

Thousands of Britons donated money to the fund, which topped £2m in the months after the toddler disappeared from a holiday flat in Portugal in May 2007.
Some of the money was spent on private detectives, including £300,000 given to Oakley. Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, also hired a Barcelona agency called Metodo 3 but later ended that deal.

The US Department of Justice said Halligen had been charged in his absence earlier this month, accused of "wire fraud and money laundering" over a contract with a London-based law firm.
Court papers allege Halligen took £1.3m from the law firm, claiming he could help secure the release of two executives from the Dutch company Trafigura imprisoned in the Ivory Coast in 2007 followed the alleged unloading of toxic waste.

The papers allege Helligen instead used the funds for his own benefit including purchasing a mansion in Great Falls, Virginia.
Halligen, born in Dublin but with links to Surrey, went on a holiday to Rome in October last year but has not returned, allegedly leaving a trail of other debts in the United States.

Although the six-month Madeleine McCann deal was worth £500,000, it is understood only about £300,000 was paid before suspicions were raised and the contract terminated early.

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Mr and Mrs McCann, said: "Due diligence was carried out before Oakley were employed on behalf of the Madeleine fund. Money was paid for work satisfactorily carried out in the early months but questions were raised later on and the contract was terminated. The matter is considered closed."

A security consultant whose company was paid £300,000 from publicly donated funds to help find Madeleine McCann has been charged with a separate £1.3m fraud.

A BUSINESSMAN who pretended to be a secret agent has allegedly pocketed up to £300,000 from funds intended to pay investigators working on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Kevin Halligen, a British security consultant, was paid to find Madeleine but allegedly failed to pass the money on to the private detectives who did the work on his behalf. A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine’s parents, said they had become increasingly concerned about Halligen.
“He had this sense of cloak and dagger, acting as if he were a James Bond-style spy,” said the friend. “He promised the earth but it came to nothing.”

Halligen’s company Oakley International, which is based in Washington DC, was paid £500,000 after being hired by the Find Madeleine fund.

The United States justice department, on behalf of the FBI, has issued an indictment seeking his arrest for an alleged £1.2m fraud.

Sources close to Halligen say he offered to provide the McCanns with satellite images and lists of telephone traffic on the night Madeleine disappeared. The data were supposed to come from contacts in Washington but, one source claimed, “all he came up with was a Google Earth image”.

The Madeleine fund was provided with further reports from teams of investigators who found it increasingly difficult to obtain their fees from Halligen. One of them, Henri Exton, a former national head of undercover operations for the British police, is owed more than £100,000 by Halligen for work he did on the Madeleine case.

Documents show that while Halligen’s company was receiving the fund’s cash, he was withdrawing large amounts of money for his personal use. He had been using company funds to finance first-class flights, expensive hotels and chauffeur-driven cars.

His contract with the fund was not renewed in October last year. Halligen left Washington for a holiday in Rome but never returned to Oakley’s offices. He was last seen staying at the Royal Crescent hotel in Bath under an assumed name.

Halligen, 50, often pretended to have served in the intelligence services to impress business and social contacts, according to those who knew him well.

Two years ago he allegedly faked his own wedding to a lawyer in Washington, watched by former agents, a CIA station chief and an adviser to Barack Obama. Halligen told his bride that his spy masters would not allow his real name to be on wedding documents. He was, in fact, already married and the priest was an actor.

A wider financial investigation has found Halligen bought a £1m mansion with money allegedly defrauded from Trafigura, the company accused of dumping toxic waste in Africa. Last week the US Department of Justice issued an indictment seeking his arrest over the alleged Trafigura fraud.

Stephen Dorrell, the McCanns’ MP, said: “This man clearly saw a vulnerable family going through a terrible ordeal and the only thing he was focused on was that there were people offering money to help find Madeleine.”

A MUSICIAN hopes to win Britain’s Got Talent with a score he is dedicating to missing Madeleine McCann.

Piano player Brian Davies, 59, of Old Chester Road, Helsby, who says he has never had a music lesson in his life, has written an instrumental piece – entitled Forget Me Not – which he hopes will help raise awareness of the Find Madeleine campaign.

“It’s my skill and I want to help the cause in the best way I can,” said Brian, an executive director of two Deeside based businesses.

“It’s a gift, I play by ear. I just go to the keyboard and play, it works the same hearing thing on the radio, but I compose my own music.”

Married Brian, who lives with his wife Gillian and has three sons, was touched by the McCann’s plight and hopes that his music can help bring her home.
He said: “I’m doing it for her. I am a family man and whoever abducted her, it isn’t their child, it’s the McCann’s, they should release the girl and let her go home to her mum and dad.

“I am a great believer in the way the Lord works and He has given me an opportunity to help raise awareness.”

Despite playing the piano since he was 10 years old, Brian has never played in front of an audience before.
“I have an audition in Manchester on November 28 and if successful I perform in front of Simon Cowell and the others in January.”

Cops are investigating the finances of a smear group that claims missing Madeleine McCann is dead.

Detectives are probing claims the boss of the Madeleine Foundation pocketed up to £90,000 of donations from people who thought they were helping the official Find Madeleine Fund.

Retired solicitor Tony Bennett, 62, runs the group from his home in Harlow, Essex.

And much of the cash under investigation comes from sales of a book he wrote blaming Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry for the threeyear-old's disappearance. All his group's accounts have now been frozen.

A McCann spokesman said last night: "It has been made clear to Mr Bennett by Kate and Gerry's lawyers that he must desist from his defamatory activities."

Meanwhile the McCanns, of Rothley, Leics, are drip-feeding their four-year-old twins information on Madeleine as they grow up.

Gp Kate, 41, said child psychologists have advised them Sean and Amelie will question them about their sister when they feel ready.

She added: "If they ask a question, we'll answer them honestly. But I'm not going to rush them."

Maddie vanished her parents' holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

Kate said: "All we want to do is find her - and the only way we can do that is by looking forward."

SCOTLAND YARD should be brought in to take control of the investigation to discover what happened to Madeleine McCann.

Kate and Gerry McCann want the Yard's renowned kidnap team to assess an avalanche of new information after last week's emotional internet appeal, which generated five million hits from around the world.

Portuguese police, the Sunday Express can reveal, have failed to set up a new phone line for callers to ring with information.

Last night there was fury over the dismissive response. Interpol and Europol are among 163 forces worldwide that have committed to help with the appeal.

Portugal's Policia Judiciaria is still in charge of the Madeleine case because that is where she disappeared over two years ago.

It would say only that if credible information comes in by fax, letter or email, it would be passed to senior officers if it was deemed "significant".

There were also reservations last night about Leicestershire Police, who are aiding the investigation from this country because the McCanns live in their catchment area, at Rothley.

Last night former Scotland Yard chief Dai Davies said it was time to let the Yard take over.

The former royal protection head said: "Madeleine is a British subject and she deserves the best, which the Yard can provide. It is time to put any daft police protocols to one side and get on with the job of finding her. It is a solvable case.

"It is astonishing and disgraceful that the Portuguese have not assigned a specific team to scrutinise leads which could provide a breakthrough in the world's biggest child abduction case.

"It is frankly outrageous that the parents of this poor child should be hiring private detectives to conduct an investigation which should have been taken on by the Yard in the first place.

"The Yard has a kidnap squad with a brilliant success record, and access to the best Holmes computer technology, forensics and investigative techniques in the world."

Holmes, which stands for Home Office Large Major Enquiry System, is a state-of-the-art data system designed to deal with the huge volume of information major crimes generate.

Sources claimed last night that Leicestershire detectives have not been inputting all their information on Holmes.

Police forces across Britain have cracked scores of tough cases using the system because it can be programmed to highlight suspects and analyse the value of myriad leads.

No one was available at Leicestershire Police yesterday to confirm or deny the claims.

On Tuesday, Kate and Gerry, both doctors aged 41, made new television appeals via the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

They urged: "Please take a minute and help us bring Madeleine home. Let's hope and pray this message reaches those who know who took Madeleine and they find the strength to do the right thing."

On Friday, a Leicestershire Police spokesman said any new information from the CEOPC initiative would be passed on to the Portuguese who would consider credible lines of inquiry.

Requests from the Portuguese to carry out new inquiries in the UK would be co-ordinated by Leicestershire Police.

New images of Madeleine, who would now be six, were shown in a video in English, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

One showed how she might appear if her skin had darkened and her hair had been dyed brown to make her look like other children if she is being held in Morocco or Tunisia.

Another time-generated image showed how she might look now with her natural blonde colouring if she is being kept in Northern Europe.

While Kate and Gerry McCann believe Leicestershire detectives have worked hard, they feel Scotland Yard's experts on kidnap, forensics and offender profiling could bring much needed impetus to the inquiry.

The parents of Madeleine McCann have revealed how a child psychologist is helping them to tell their two other children about her disappearance.
Kate and Gerry McCann said they would be ‘frank and open’ with their four-year-old twinsSean and Amelie when they ask why their sister is still missing.

Mrs McCann, 41, said experts have said the youngsters will ask about Madeleine’s disappearance when they are ready.

‘We’ll be led by them,’ she said. ‘We’ve had advice from a child psychologist and they’ve said Sean and Amelie will lead the way.
‘If they ask a question, we’ll answer them honestly. I’m not going to rush them, but if they ask something then I’ll answer them.’

Mr McCann, 41, a heart specialist, added: ‘We will answer their questions openly and honestly. What they ask, we’ll tell them. We’ll tell them what happened and what information we know.’

'It is never too late to do the right thing," implores the viral video message for Madeleine, released this week across the internet. It has been broadcast under the old detective's adage that "everyone has a best friend" -- that someone out there knows what happened to Maddy and, if she is still alive, where she is being kept.

It is the first words of that statement, though, which sum up the essence of how the McCann family are feeling: it is never too late for their child to be returned. Too much time will never have elapsed for them to keep the smouldering flame of hope alive that their little girl will be found.

The message has been released in seven languages and will be promoted around the world by Interpol, police forces and missing persons agencies. It is a huge undertaking, and illustrates clearly that, for Madeleine's parents, the quest to find her is still alive and vital.

The bond between parent and child is one of the most powerful and primal in all human relationships. Maternal bonding begins at the moment of birth -- nature has designed babies to want to breast-feed immediately, and that human contact serves to kick-start an emotional welding that remains throughout the life cycle.

In fact, the relationships children have with their parents -- and some psychological approaches place the greatest emphases on the bond between mother and child -- form the basis for all relationships which follow. Children learn to trust, to value themselves, and to communicate effectively and assertively by interacting with their parents. Theorists such as Freud and Jung suggest that we spend the rest of our lives trying to rediscover the warmth and comfort we found at our mother's breast.

And fathers have an important role, too. It is believed that babies can recognise the timbre of their father's voice while in utero. It is now accepted that while women have a powerful maternal instinct -- a natural drive to reproduce and then nurture their offspring -- men also are gifted with a paternal instinct, a similar desire to further their genetic line and care for and protect their progeny.

Both male and female children will imprint on the father as a very different, though equally important, kind of care-giver to their mother. It is suggested that, even in same-sex couples, one partner will adopt a mothering role, and one a fathering.

The love children feel for their parents, and the love parents feel for their children, is vital and essential. So when that relationship is severed, it brings about the most devastating kind of loss. Yet when that loss is accompanied by the added trauma of an abduction, and not knowing if your child is dead or alive, being cared for or mistreated, the anxiety must be almost unbearable.

But the love of a parent, and the capacity of the human spirit to rise above even the most dire of circumstances and find hope, is truly remarkable. Rational thinking suggests that, after all this time, Madeleine must be dead. She was three years old when she went missing on a family holiday in Portugal in May 2007. The possibilities for what became of her are as numerous as they are wholly unpleasant.

Yet there are instances of children being abducted, held for lengthy periods of time, and then either escaping or being found. The most obvious and recent instance, and one that must have given the McCanns a real boost, is that of Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was abducted aged 11 in Lake Tahoe, California in 1991 and found this year aged 29. She had been kept as a sex slave by her captor, and had several children by him. But, despite the psychological damage of such an ordeal -- and reports suggest that Ms Dugard has many years of therapy ahead of her -- she is alive, and reunited with her parents.

Another case which must have fed the McCanns indomitable will is that of Natascha Kampusch, who was abducted aged 10, in 1998 in Vienna. She was found, aged 18, in 2006.

And that is the dream that the McCanns are clinging to. Regardless of what has happened since that fateful day more than two years ago, they know that, if they could have their daughter back, their love would be enough to heal any wounds.

Though these wounds can be grave, indeed.
Jeremiah Treanor was abducted with his identical twin brother Marcus at age seven in 1980 in London. He was held -- and used -- by a child prostitution ring linked to the Russian Mafia, a group that had carried out 38 kidnappings, of which only 12 children were ever found alive. Jeremiah was one of those lucky enough to be rescued in 1983. Tragically, his brother was murdered by the gang just a week before Scotland Yard shut their operations down.

Jeremiah went through years of therapy, and suffered from nightmares and violent outbursts, coupled with periods of outright terror. Yet he recovered, through time and compassion.

All cases of children rescued from abduction do not include abuse. Take the instance of the Murdock brothers aged seven and 10, who disappeared from outside their home in Atlanta in 1988. They were found calmly walking home from school one thousand miles away five years later by a police officer who happened to have been looking over missing persons files before going on his lunch break.

The man who abducted them -- a father who had lost his own two sons in a car accident -- had told them he was their uncle, and cared for them as his own.

The boys visited him regularly in prison after being reunited with their parents.
The human heart is a complex thing, and parental bonding is powerful beyond our understanding. One can only hope and pray that the McCanns will find their lost little girl, and that, when they do, whoever has had her treated her with kindness. The hope of this is slim, but slender though it may be, it is hope, nonetheless.

Anti-McCann group facing fraud probe

FRAUD cops are probing the bank account of a campaign group which says Maddie McCann is dead - and aims to blame her parents.

Controversial lawyer Tony Bennett helped set up the Madeleine Foundation, but its account is now frozen.

Detectives want assurances over tens of thousands of pounds sent in by people supporting his warped aims.

Bennett, 62, ran the account from his home in Harlow, Essex.

Much of the cash came from the sale of £4 books blaming the McCanns after the three-year-old vanished in Portugal in 2007.

The couple think many people may have mistakenly donated believing they were funding the hunt for Maddie.

The account holds £2,700 but Mr Bennett is thought to have £90,000 in private accounts.

A rift had developed between Bennett and foundation chairwoman Debbie Butler. Police stressed the case was still only an investigation and no arrests had been made.

A source close to Gerry and Kate McCann said: "This foundation is now in meltdown. They can't wait to see the end of it."

A NEW video campaign launched to help find Madeleine McCann is being watched by up to 100,000 internet users every hour.

Four million people from across the globe viewed the message in its first day.

The 60-second film, "A Minute for Madeleine", was released on the internet at midnight on Monday by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop).

Since then it has spread across thousands of social networking sites, blogs, chat forums and search engines.

Celebrities including Jonathan Ross, Chris Evans, Alan Carr and Phillip Schofield have also sent the link to their followers on Twitter.

The surge of interest was mirrored on the official Find Madeleine website, which saw hits soar from an average of 200,000 a day to four million yesterday.

Jim Gamble, of Ceop, said: "We are delighted with the response so far but this is only the start.

The video outlines how Maddie disappeared on May 3, 2007, while on holiday with her family in Portugal.

It states: "Madeleine is now six years old. We know that there is someone out there who knows who is involved in her disappearance."

The film also includes two new digitally-aged pictures of how Madeleine might look now aged six.

In one of them she has dark brown hair and tanned skin in case she has been living in north Africa or southern Europe.

Madeleine McCann's face is probably one of the most recognisable in the world, but it is the face of a four-year-old Madeleine and that is the problem.
Two-and-a-half years after she vanished from a Portuguese holiday flat, police have issued age-progressed images of how she may look today.
They are aimed at "pricking the conscience" of people who know what happened to her. But how are the pictures created?
Police use specialist age-progression artists to generate such images. They use different techniques, including drawing, but usually produce computer-generated images.
There is no specific age-progression software, but the artist uses existing computer packages to manipulate features.
As a child grows their eyes will largely stay the same but everything below the eyes grows outwards and downwards, says age-progression artist Auriole Prince.

"Trying to show how this growth changes a face is like piecing together a puzzle," she says. "There's an upside down triangle between the eyes, nose and the mouth. The relationship between these features is the most important in keeping the likeness."
Ideally an artist will have an original portrait-style photograph of the person who is going to be age-progressed, along with other photos showing them at different angles and with varying expressions.

They also use photographs of other family members. As a rough guide, 70 to 75% of an age-progressed face can be extrapolated from pictures of the subject's parents taken at the same age as the child, says Ms Prince.
Pictures of siblings will also be helpful.

Along with artistic skills, age-progression artists also need to have a good knowledge of the anatomy of the face. This is because bone growth and dental changes can have a real impact on what a person looks like, especially at certain ages.

"From age four to six, like Madeleine, a person will go through a lot of changes," says Ms Prince, who works with police and also worked for the National Missing Persons Helpline for eight years. She trained in the US with the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"But some of the biggest alterations take place from age seven to eight. This is because a person's underlying bone structure really grows, milk teeth fall out and the new teeth emerge."
Contrary to popular belief, a child's eyes do not remain the same size from birth. But their growth is minimal compared with the lower face. However, an age progression artists will sometimes shrink the pupils - revealing more whites of the eyes - to imply aging, says Ms Prince.

In cases of vanished children, the child must usually have been missing for at least two years to warrant an age progression image, says Ms Prince. The child must also tend to be at least two at the time they went missing.
In terms of success in reproducing a likeness, Ms Prince stresses age progression is more about renewing publicity and moving on the public's perception of a person, than creating a facsimile of what a person may look like.

They are often used in long-running missing persons cases like Ben Needham, who disappeared on the Greek island of Kos in 1991.

"In this case the public will still be looking for the four-year-old Madeleine and the police want them to look for six-year-old girl," says Ms Prince.

Kate and Gerry McCann were grilled yesterday for the first time about allegations they could have been involved in their daughter's disappearance.
Portuguese police had previously named the couple as "arguidos", or formal suspects, in the case in September 2007.

But the McCanns, both 41, have always strenuously insisted they are innocent, and their suspect status was lifted when the authorities in Portugal shelved the case in July last year.
However, last night Sandra Felgueiras, a reporter for Portuguese TV station RTP, questioned the McCanns about claims made in a book by Goncalo Amaral, the former detective in charge of the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance.

The couple took legal action against Mr Amaral and in September Lisbon's main civil court banned further sale or publication of his book.
The McCanns were visibly frustrated by the course of the RTP interview, which included questions about the findings of sniffer dogs brought in to search their apartment in Praia da Luz and whether they had close links to the British government.

Ms Felgueiras quizzed them on claims there was a "pact of silence" between the couple and friends on holiday with them when Madeleine disappeared.
Mr McCann explained that there was no pact, but they had all refused to talk to the media about what happened that night in line with Portugal's strict judicial secrecy laws.

The journalist also asked if they felt they were victims of the Portuguese investigation, to which Mr McCann replied: "The victim is Madeleine."

Ms Felgueiras said afterwards: "It is two-and-a-half years after Madeleine disappeared and this was the first time they talked to us in a big interview since the files were closed. I think I should feel free and they should feel free to talk about it. It would be the only chance to clear up the rumours."
But Mr McCann insisted that: "The place to have those discussions is in the judicial and legal environment where they can be properly assessed and dealt with within the bounds of the law.

Evidence

"That's the approach that we've taken, and clearly we're very pleased that the Portuguese judiciary have agreed that there is absolutely no evidence that Madeleine is dead or that we were involved, and that's why injunctions have been given.

"If people accept that, then they will accept that Madeleine is missing and can still be found."

Earlier Gerry McCann told how the couple's four-year-old twins have started saying they want to find and fight the person who took their missing sister. Sean and Amelie were just two when Madeleine vanished.
But their parents have discussed the fact that their big sister is missing with them and they are now fiercely protective of her.

The McCanns were speaking as police released a video showing how Madeleine might look now, in a bid to prick the conscience of anyone who knows what became of her.
The 60-second video, released in seven languages, features film footage of Madeleine and digitally enhanced photos of what she might look like now with shoulder-length blonde hair, as well as one with a tan and dark hair.

The clip, produced with the aid of psychologists, can be viewed at www.ceop.police.uk.
"This message is aimed at prompting the conscience of an individual who is keeping a secret," said Jim Gamble, head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.
Mr McCann hailed the global online appeal as "a world first".

"We're optimistic that this message will get to them, it will cause them to wrestle with their conscience," he said.

Abu Dhabi // UAE police yesterday joined the worldwide search for the British girl Madeleine McCann, who vanished from her family’s apartment during a holiday in Portugal more than two years ago.

Abu Dhabi Police backed a new campaign, launched by Britain’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) Centre, designed to raise awareness of the case.

Ceop has released a video showing what blue-eyed Madeleine might look like now if she is being held in the Middle East.

The move comes 30 months after Madeleine disappeared in the resort of Praia da Luz, days before her fourth birthday, in May 2007.

The 60-second video, called A Minute for Madeleine, is being supported by police forces in the UAE, the US, Canada, Australia and several European countries, as well as by Interpol.

A spokesman for Abu Dhabi Police confirmed that the force was supporting the campaign, but was unable to provide further details.

A spokeswoman for Ceop said: “The UAE police have been very supportive. They are using our Arabic version [of the film] and have agreed to give it as high a profile as possible in the UAE.”

The video is available in seven languages and shows two computer-generated images of Madeleine as she would be expected to look now, aged six.

While one image shows her with her familiar fair hair and light skin, the second gives her a darker, tanned complexion, to demonstrate how living in a hotter climate than her homeland may have affected her appearance.

She also has darker hair, to show what she would look like had it been dyed by an abductor.

“The images of Madeleine previously released were felt to have placed her in a much more western context,” said the spokeswoman.

“This is about making sure that people who are searching for her aren’t limited to that view of what she may look like.”

Madeleine disappeared after being left asleep in the rented apartment with her twin siblings while her parents, Kate and Gerry, dined with friends nearby.

When one of them went to check on the children, they discovered that Madeleine was missing. She has not been seen since.

Despite Portuguese police ending their own investigation into the abduction in July last year, Madeleine’s parents have continued their high-profile campaign to find their daughter.

In the months after her disappearance, there were several reported sightings of Madeleine in Morocco, prompting speculation that she may have been smuggled into North Africa.

However, none of the sightings were confirmed.

British police said the video had not been released in the light of any new information regarding Madeleine’s whereabouts, although the Middle East and North Africa were considered possible destinations had she been snatched by human traffickers.

“It’s not about making people think she may be in one place or another, it’s about spreading the message as widely as possible,” said the Ceop spokeswoman.

The film was put together with the help of psychologists. It includes home video footage of Madeleine playing with the twins. It also appeals to anyone with information to come forward.

“The person we are looking to reach is likely to be a partner, family member, friend or colleague of the person or people who were involved in Madeleine’s disappearance,” said Jim Gamble, the head of Ceop. “We want the message to become so widespread that it becomes a constant reminder to that person that it is never too late to do the right thing.”

Mr Gamble, who has more than 25 years of policing experience, said investigations involving missing children never closed, citing the case of Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was found in California in August, 18 years after being abducted.

“We are extremely grateful to Ceop for launching this new message around the world in such an effective way,” Madeleine’s parents said in a statement.

“It is vital that it is seen and heard as widely as possible.”

Madeleine McCann’s four-year-old twin siblings are now slowly grasping the horror of her abduction, their parents revealed yesterday.
Sean and Amelie were just two when their big sister was snatched but Kate and Gerry have since gradually explained the grim truth to them.

It is poignantly clear the youngsters still hold Madeleine close to their hearts.
Gerry, 41, said: “They talk about her more than Kate and I do. It’s incredible.
“They don’t ask so many direct questions but as they’re getting older more of the gaps are being filled in.

“They know Madeleine’s missing, they believe she has been taken and they know it’s not right that she has been taken. They understand the person who has taken Madeleine has done something very bad.
“They have asked why she’s been taken and we said, ‘We don’t know, but obviously they wanted Madeleine’. They know it’s not right and they want her back.”

Kate, also 41, added: “We made it as light as possible for Sean and Amelie but in a way they can understand.
“We made it sound like, ‘Even if you really want something you shouldn’t take it if it belongs to someone else’.”

The kids, who now attend school, are so heartbroken at having Madeleine ripped out of their lives they have even vowed to attack the kidnapper when he is caught.

Heart specialist Gerry revealed: “They’re saying, ‘When we find who took her we will fight them’. That doesn’t come directly from us saying that.

“Amelie this week was saying, ‘When I find that man I’m going to do this and that’. I said, ‘No, we will give them to the police and then we’ll put them in jail’.”

Since Madeleine’s May 2007 abduction in Praia da Luz, Portugal, her bedroom at the family home in Rothley, Leics, has remained just as she left it.

It is a bedroom her parents fervently hope she will return to one day. Kate said: “There are lots more presents and pictures from Sean and Amelie. She’s an integral part of our life, of our home.”

Meanwhile, they have bravely striven to give the twins happy, normal childhoods and shield them from the anguish the couple endure.
But the youngsters know there are times their parents’ mask of calm slips. Kate said: “It’s difficult. I don’t want to be upset in front of them all the time.

“We have as many happy times as we can, which is what they deserve. There will be occasions when one or another of us gets upset, but that’s inevitable.

“Anything can spark that – the most innocent thing. But they know it’s OK to be sad. They know we’re sad because Madeleine’s not with us.”

She and Gerry believe the twins having each other has helped them develop into cheerful children. He said: “They’re not sad very often, and that makes life for us an awful lot easier. They have each other and I’m sure that has helped them.

“Had this just been one other younger child it would have been harder. To the casual observer it would look superficially quite normal, especially when we have the kids. We make sure they get the love and attention they deserve and Madeleine got.”

The couple refuse to give up hope that Madeleine is alive and Gerry vowed: “We’re going to do everything in our power to find her and her abductor.”

The latest step in the search saw the release of an online video this week showing how she might look aged at six.

Gerry told how the twins were aware of the efforts going on to find her.
He said: “When I think of Madeleine I think of the little girl running around the house and on holiday.
“Sean and Amelie do a brilliant job of bringing us back to reality. They see stickers or wristbands and say, ‘Oh look, that person is helping us to find Madeleine’.”

Kate admitted she was sometimes fearful about her daughter’s whereabouts and confessed: “I try to push it out of my mind because it upsets me and it doesn’t help.”

And she pleaded: “It would be fantastic for Sean and Amelie – regardless of myself and Gerry – for Madeleine to be back. We’re urging people to help us. Please don’t give up on Madeleine.”

Hundreds of thousands of internet users have watched a new video targeting the person hiding a guilty secret about what happened to Madeleine McCann.

Gerry McCann hailed the global online appeal as a "world first" and said he and his wife Kate were "hopeful" it would lead to a breakthrough in the search for their daughter.

The 60-second film - titled A Minute For Madeleine - was posted on the website of the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) centre.
A spokeswoman for Ceop said the video "exploded" over the internet. It was watched by an average of 15,000 people an hour on Ceop's own homepage, and hundreds of thousands more saw it on other websites.

Links to the film were also posted by hundreds of Twitter users, among them TV presenters Phillip Schofield and Jonathan Ross.

The "viral" internet appeal is aimed at persuading a friend or relative of the person responsible for Madeleine's disappearance to "do the right thing". Mr McCann, 41, said: "We're optimistic that this message will get to them, it will cause them to wrestle with their conscience. But they may not give in to that conscience on the first viewing, it might be the second or third.

"I think that's another important bit of the internet here. The power of the internet is the persistence. We are hopeful. You would have to be living in another world not to see this message - that's what we're relying on."

Ceop head Jim Gamble said he wanted the video to become so widely distributed online that it came up every time the person in question searched for information about the Madeleine case. "Our pursuit of this individual should be relentless. If we get sufficient depth of support from the public across the globe, it will not go away," he said.

The video includes two new digitally-aged pictures of how Madeleine might look now aged six. In one of them she has dark brown hair and tanned skin in case she has been living in north Africa or southern Europe.
Mrs McCann, 41, said it was "very strange" to see the images for the first time. "It's not particularly pleasant because obviously it's not the Madeleine that we remember," she said. "It's really just to enable people to remember that Madeleine may have dark hair now, she might have darker skin, and to help them not just to imagine her as a little blonde girl."

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal on May 3, 2007 while her parents dined with friends nearby. Despite a massive police investigation and huge publicity worldwide, she has not been found.

For most of us, the events in Portugal’s Praia da Luz three summers ago are now a blur – a distant unhappy memory of lighting candles, prayers and appeals for a little girl snatched from a holiday apartment.
But then something happens to remind us of Madeleine McCann and once again we catch our breath and try to imagine the misery her parents, Gerry and Kate, experience every day as another reminder of their missing daughter emerges in a child’s laughter or a little girl’s sudden captivating smile.

This will be their third Christmas without Madeleine and the maxim “time heals” could hardly be less fitting. If anything the ordeal of not knowing worsens with every bogus sighting and false claim. Yet still brave, strong and united they refuse to give up hope.

“If you know what has happened to Madeleine,” Kate and Gerry said this week, “it’s still not too late to do the right thing and come forward.”

There’s no blueprint for how couples should manage an ongoing nightmare. The rule book on dealing with the pain of a missing child has yet to be written.

But at home, when twins Amelie and Sean are attending lessons at the school where Madeleine would have been their watchful big sister, Kate spends hours sifting through paperwork, searching for simple overlooked clues. When Gerry returns from work he joins her.

At one time I believed this need to scour every last detail might have been a ritual to assuage the guilt, real or imagined, any parent would feel over a child’s disappearance.
But three years on it doesn’t seem futile or pointless.
Children do, against all odds, reappear and might have done so earlier had every stone been turned or every minute detail properly examined.

A policewoman’s hunch led to the discovery of Jaycee Lee Dugard a few months ago.
Snatched at the age of 11 from a bus stop in America’s South Lake Tahoe we now know had there been more thorough searches of her captor’s property her 18-year imprisonment in Phillip Garrido’s filthy garden sheds may have ended sooner.

If anything has given succour to the McCanns it’s the story of Jaycee Lee.
But it’s also helped persuade the cynics, who feel the couple have been pointlessly banging their heads against a brick wall, that they could be wrong.
And right now, as they face another difficult Christmas, the family need all our support.

The chilling reality is that someone knows what happened the night Madeleine disappeared. They understand the motive and the way her abduction was orchestrated.
It would be terrifying if, in our lifetime, despite all the advances of modern technology, high-speed communications and sophisticated policing skills, a three-year-old girl was able to disappear off the face of the Earth without a single human being’s knowledge.

The McCanns have already backed a Europe-wide alert system for snatched children. Now the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) has gone further with a global campaign targeted at kidnappers and paedophile rings.

And for those of us who have pushed Madeleine to the furthest recesses of our memory we’re reminded, thanks to age-processed pictures, of how she might look now.

For years America looked at similar photographs of Jaycee Lee Dugard and despaired.
She wasn’t delivered back to her family by a miracle but by the sloppiness of an over-confident, arrogant criminal.

Everyone makes mistakes. And one day, the person responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance will too.

Police hope the new computer generated pictures will spark a flood of possible sightings and lead them to the missing youngster’s whereabouts.

One shows how she would appear, now aged six, if being held in Europe – with her skin still pale.
The other is an image of her face had she been taken to North Africa, with a suntan and dark hair.

The pictures were released after Madeleine’s heartbroken parents Gerry and Kate, both 41, begged one of Britain’s leading child abduction police officers to help them find their precious daughter, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday apartment in May 2007.

It will come up every time someone types "Maddie" or "Madeleine McCann" into a search engine.
They wrote a letter to Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre boss Jim Gamble – and he was so moved by it he decided there and then to get involved.

The officer yesterday launched a 60-second internet video clip aimed at people who may know Madeleine’s kidnapper.
Mr Gamble said: “It is the first time it has been done and I absolutely believe this has the opportunity, the potential, to get to the person we are looking for. We are not looking for someone who has seen this girl particularly.

“We are looking for the person who knows or strongly suspects the individual or individuals involved in Madeleine’s disappearance. The person who for a long time has perhaps struggled with their conscience keeping a terrible secret.” Mr Gamble is convinced Madeleine may still be alive and pointed to the case of American teenager Jaycee Dugard as evidence. He added: “I’ve reviewed cases of children who turned up four, eight, eighteen years later. Statisticians do that most awful of thing, taking away people’s hope.

Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, pleaded for help after reaching a “low point” in their hopes they would ever see Madeleine again.

A viral message directed at a friend, relative or partner of the person who abducted Madeleine McCann, telling them that “it is never too late to do the right thing”, went online at midnight.

The video was created to “infiltrate the internet” by spreading from news websites to blogs and social networks until it is the first thing that appears when the missing child’s name is typed into a search engine.
Jim Gamble, the head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, said that the message was founded on the belief that, like Jaycee Dugard in California and Natasha Kampusch in Austria, Madeleine could be rescued or reappear despite being missinghaving gone missing for more than two years ago.

“This is about hope, it’s about collective hope. I believe this message will deliver answers for us,” said Mr Gamble, who studied 11 child abduction cases in which the victims had reappeared after long periods in captivity.

Harnessing the power of the viral message is a new technique in an investigation but the core idea of the 60-second film is based on the old detective’s adage that “everyone has a best friend” and someone will talk.
Madeleine was 3 years old when she went missing on a family holiday in Portugal in May 2007.

The new video contains “aged progressed” images of how she might look today, aged 6. One shows the girl with blonde hair, while the other shows her with dark hair and tanned skin, as she might look if she was being held in a hot country.

The message has gone online in seven languages — English, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian — and will be promoted around the world by police forces, missing persons agencies and Interpol.
It represents the first time that a British law enforcement agency has taken the lead in the international hunt for the missing girl. Her mother, Kate McCann, will conduct a series of television interviews today to promote the message.

Mr Gamble stressed that the video was not a public appeal but a message to one person who knew or suspected that someone close to them had taken the child. “It’s aimed at prompting the conscience of the person who is keeping the secret,” Mr Gamble said.

“The person we are looking to reach is likely to be a partner, family member, friend or colleague of the person or people who were involved in Madeleine’s disappearance.” He said he believed that the abductor would be regularly checking the internet for developments in the investigation and would be “rattled” by the video, which was prepared with the help of psychologists.

Mr Gamble said: “This is not the normal criminal psychology approach. We’re not looking at the criminal, but at the associate and saying to them, ‘You can redeem yourself’.

“We believe there is someone out there who is associated and who knows. This person doesn’t need to see an age progressed image of Madeleine — this person knows who Madeleine is and who committed the crime.” Mr Gamble stressed that there were no new leads, nor fresh intelligence behind the launch of the message. He added: “In a case like this the investigation is never closed”.
