More details surfaced about the upcoming Pentax announcements on September 9th and September 20th. In addition to the K-5 and the K-r, expected are also, at least two new lenses, some compact cameras and may be “something completely new”. Still not sure how the new products will be divided between both announcements.

The two new lenses are:

DA 35 f/2.4: budget, all-plastic lens; target price below $200

DA 18-125 f/3,5-5,6

The K-x and K-r models will probably coexist for a while. K-7 production has already been stopped. Some more details on the new DSLRs in addition to the specs from yesterday:

Pentax K-r: K-x body; AF active sensor visible in the viewfinder; Sony Exmor HD 14 MP sensor (NOT 12 MP as previously reported); 720p video.

Pentax K-5: K-7 body; slightly better AF (incorporating some tweaks developed for 645D); Sony Exmor HD 16 MP sensor; 1080 video (unclear whether “i” or “p”).

In terms of the “completely new” product, the expectations are for a new Pentax EVIL camera that could be shown at Photokina , probably under glass, just like the 645D few years back. The second possibility (very low chance) is a new full frame Pentax DSLR.

Canon Succeeds in Developing World’s Largest CMOS Image Sensor, With Ultra-High Sensitivity

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 31, 2010 – Canon Inc. announced today that it has successfully developed the world’s largest*1 CMOS image sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. The sensor is capable of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera due to its expanded size enabling greater light-gathering capabilities. Potential applications for the new high-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behavior.

At 202 x 205 mm, the newly developed CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, and is approximately 40 times the size of Canon’s largest commercial CMOS sensor.*2

In the past, enlarging the size of the sensor resulted in an increase in the amount of time required between the receiving and transmission of data signals, which posed a challenge to achieving high-speed readout. Canon, however, solved this problem through an innovative circuit design, making the realization of a massive video-compatible CMOS sensor possible. Additionally, by ensuring the cleanest of cleanroom environments during the production process, the sensor minimizes image imperfections and dust.

The increased size of the new CMOS sensor allows more light to be gathered thus enabling shooting in low-light environments. The sensor makes possible the image capture in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, facilitating the shooting of 60 frame-per-second video with a mere 0.3 lux of illumination.

Through the further development of distinctive CMOS image sensors, Canon will break new ground in the world of new image expression, in the area of still images as well as video.

NikonRumors.com is now online. It may take several hours until the server changes propagation is complete and all ISP have updated their routers. If you cannot access NikonRumors.com directly, try http://173.45.162.91. I am not going to discuss again the details of why NR went down, I did that already on Twitter and Facebook.

NikonRumors now has a new dedicated server and a new host (NationalNet). There could be some interruptions in the next few days, until I fine-tune the site.

Coming up next: Nikon files patents for a 80-400mm f/3.5-5.6 lens and a back illuminated sensor.

This video shows some of the upcoming Samsung NX products (the previous video was promptly removed):

Update: the video was removed from Vimeo.

Speculations of what the different lenses are can be seen here and here (see also the ongoing discussion on dpreview).

One of the lenses in the video looks like the previously rumored 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6. Looking at the picture from the end of the video, the Samsung NX100 appears to be bigger than the NX10. New accessories, like an external flash and electronic viewfinder, are also shown. The NX100 is expected to have the same sensor as the NX10 (14.6MP APS-C CMOS), even though some reports indicated a new 16MP sensor. As previously reported, the Samsung NX5 will not be available in the US.

Expect the official announcement on September 14th, 2010.
