An interesting story reported by FujiRumors: the Swedish website Cyberphoto published a blurred image of a new Fuji camera that is rumored to be a new entry level, interchangeable lens X model. The original post and photo have since been removed, but the question remains - is there really a place for another Fuji X system camera? The X-E1 is pretty small and the only way you can go smaller and cheaper is to remove the EVF or create an "entry level" model with the old 12MP sensor from the X100 (less likely). If such camera is really announced, it will basically be like the Nikon Coolpix A or Ricoh GR, but with interchangeable lenses. Do you guys really see any purpose for such model given the current Fuji line-up (XF1, X20, X100s, X-E1, X-Pro1)?

A recent tweet by the Fuji Guys - they usually go to Japan for training before a new camera is released (speculations on my part of course):

Description:

The Rokinon 8mm Ultra Wide Angle Fisheye Lens is the most affordable 8mm Fisheye Lens in the market. It features the widest field of view over any other 8mm fisheye lens, and its build quality and optical construction are superb. The Rokinon 8mm lens is designed for digital SLR cameras with APS-C image sensors. For these types of cameras, it provides full-frame coverage - which means that pictures will cover the entire frame. It is also compatible with cameras that have a full-frame sensor. For cameras with full-frame sensors, the lens will produce pictures with a semi-circular image and close images will appear proportionately large for a dramatic effect. The Rokinon 8mm lens creates images with an expanded and exaggerated perspective and an extremely wide 180° angle of view.

Overview

Designed to satisfy the discriminating needs of sports and wildlife photographers, the EF 200–400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens with an optically matched built-in 1.4x extender for maximum versatility. With a simple flick of a switch, the zoom range can be quickly increased to 280–560mm (f/5.6). This capability is extremely useful in applications where it is not possible to change lenses quickly, while also protecting delicate equipment such as a digital SLR camera’s image sensor in environments with dust and high humidity. The EF 200–400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X incorporates one fluorite and four UD lens elements, which provide excellent correction of chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range for professional quality images with high resolution, contrast and color fidelity, while a 9-blade circular aperture helps deliver beautiful, soft backgrounds. It utilizes inner focusing, ring USM, a high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithms for fast and accurate autofocusing. And, with Power Focus mode, focus shifts are quiet and smooth, which is essential for filmmaking. Image stabilization is effective up to four shutter speed steps, with three image stabilization modes (standard, panning, and during exposure only) providing excellent results for a wide range of subjects. Optimized lens placement and coatings deliver outstanding color balance, while helping to minimize ghosting and flare. The lens is highly resistant to dust and water, enabling shooting even in harsh conditions. A fluorine coating on front and rear lens surfaces repels dust particles and makes the lens easier to clean.

"Moving on to more serious things, the camera immediately becomes dissapointing in terms of its finish. This particular model felt very plastic-like all over. To make things worse, they have chosen the most plastic and rubber-like materials for the knobs. The text written on the knobs did not look good upon close inspection too. Now, if you should bring something up to your eye and attempt to admire closely, it should be a luxury item boasting of a supposedly luxury finish like the Lunar."

Two new Canon PowerShot cameras have been leaked form a recent filing in a Taiwanese government agency. Those are most likely the new products that will be announced at the May 31 press conference. The Canon S200 will have a 5.2-26mm f/2-5.9 (35mm equivalent: 24-120mm) and is probably the replacement for the popular S110 model.
Update: see also this related post.

The Australian-born photographer Brad Morris had the chance to play with the Hasselblad Lunar mirrorless camera after he ran into some guys who had the camera on the streets of Hong Kong. He shared his first impressions on the.me:

"The first thing that strikes you when looking at the Hassy is the funky shape of the wooden grip and the dials and buttons. The next thing that strikes you is that, in spite of the camera top plate being metal, the finish on both the top plate and the buttons works really hard at giving the impression that they are cheap plastic. The texture is visually similar to the plastic used in the low-end Canon Rebel SLRs."

Few other remarks:

The EVF has a large eyecup

The Lunar is heavier than the NEX-7

Stiffer buttons with sharper edges compared to the NEX-7

"Better quality click" when releasing the shutter

Zeiss published a new blog post and a video on the development of the Touit lenses:

"Touit 2.8/12 – A sophisticated, extreme wide angle lens with the Distagon optics concept. Due to the Distagon design it was possible to build such a compact, extreme wideangle lens by meeting the requirements for optimum ray angles on the camera sensors. Eleven lens elements are arranged in eight groups. Two aspheric lens elements have been implemented to ensure a compact lens, despite the short focal length, of high image quality over the whole image field. Three lens elements are made of materials with anomalous partial dispersion to reduce color aberration for high contrast images with vivid color reproduction. Focusing is done by a floating elements design – all 6 lenses behind the aperture are moved."

"Touit 1.8/32 – A robust and compact standard lens that relies on the tried-and-tested Planar optics concept, but which has been adjusted to the requirements of today’s digital cameras through the addition of lens elements. The additional lenses have been needed especially to meet today’s requirements for better correction of chromatic aberrations. The result is eight lens elements in five groups. Focusing happens through an overall adjustment whereby the entire length of the lens remains unchanged."

Tamron filed a patent in Japan (2013-83783) for a 35mm f/1.4 APS-C mirrorless lens (50mm equivalent in full frame).
And two new Canon patents - the first one (2013-77910) is for lens image stabilization designed to automatically track celestial objects.
The second Canon patent (2013-74337) is for pixel shifting in order to obtain a high-resolution image.

Press release:

THE ONLY THING RETRO ABOUT IT IS THE WAY IT LOOKS: NEW OLYMPUS FLAGSHIP PEN E-P5 TAKES COMPACT SYSTEM CAMERAS TO A NEW LEVEL

Advanced Performance in a Classic Design: 1/8000th of a Second Shutter, Built-in Wi-Fi, Custom Control, Creative Functions, Optional VF-4 Viewfinder and More

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., May 10, 2013 – Olympus marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary PEN F with the launch of the new Olympus PEN E-P5, a digital update of a classic film camera designed with breakthrough technology and incredible performance advancements. Designed for photographers looking for superior image quality in a portable body, the PEN E-P5 delivers a stellar shooting experience with 1/8000th of a second shutter speed – a world-first for the Compact System Camera class – built-in Wi-Fi, autofocus advancements, easy-access manual controls and a host of other features.

The new flagship in the Olympus PEN series exudes detailed craftsmanship, from a seamless design to an all-metal casing that houses many of the same award-winning technologies found inside Olympus’s premier Micro Four Thirds® camera, the OM-D E-M5®: 16-Megapixel TruePic VI Live MOS sensor, FAST AF, 5-Axis Image Stabilization and more.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is the first Compact System Camera with a mechanical shutter that can achieve a speed of 1/8000th of a second to freeze fast-moving subjects like insects in flight or to create pictures with dramatic background blur, even in bright conditions. The built-in flash, with an improved, faster 1/320th of a second synch speed, makes it easier to take backlit shots during the daytime. Never miss an instant photo opportunity with features like quick start-up, new short release time lag AF mode, which reduces the time between shots to 0.044 seconds, and nine-frame-per-second sequential shooting.

A world class autofocus system, also found in the Olympus OM-D E-M5, powers the E-P5’s new Super Spot AF, accurately bringing into focus even extremely small subjects. Simply select an area on your subject where pin-point accurate AF is required and the E-P5 can auto-focus on that area - offering even more precision than phase-difference autofocus systems. New Focus Peaking dramatically improves the usability of manual focus lenses by bringing shots into focus by emphasizing the contours of the point of focus in white or black.

The camera’s in-body 5-Axis Image Stabilization mechanism, which has been further evolved since its introduction in the Olympus OM-D E-M5, is now compact enough to fit in the E-P5’s svelte body. The system corrects various kinds of camera shaking, whether shooting still photos or recording movies and the new IS-AUTO mode automatically detects the camera's movements and provides optimal control of correction when panning regardless of direction or camera orientation. Correction-checking on the Live View screen makes it possible to check the image stabilization effects on the Live View screen that was previously difficult with in-body image stabilization systems. The user can press the shutter button halfway to check the image stabilization effects on the display and then decide upon the composition. The image remains on the display for two seconds after the shutter button is released, making it possible to stabilize the autofocus point and set framing. Multi-motion IS used in combination with the 5-Axis Image Stabilization mechanism produces excellent correction performance, especially during movie recording.

Hands-on photographers will appreciate the intuitive 2x2 Dial Control system which is in easy reach on the back and top of the camera. When shooting manually, a lever on the back can be quickly moved to one of two positions. In the first position, moving the dial at the front of the camera adjusts the aperture while the back dial affects exposure time. In the second position, the dials change the ISO value and white balance. Alternatively, you can use the lever on the back of the camera to assign a range of other functions.

The E-P5 is the first Olympus camera to include built-in Wi-Fi. Setup is simple and involves quickly scanning the QR code displayed on the camera's LCD with your Smart device to synch it with the Wi-Fi network created by the camera. Olympus’ free smartphone app, Olympus Image Share 2.0*, synchronizes your smartphone’s and E-P5’s screens so you can effectively see the camera’s LCD on your phone and control it by touching the smartphone display as if it were your camera. This is extremely useful for self-portraits and for remotely shooting subjects like wildlife that are easily startled if you get too close. You can count down to shutter release on the phone itself, grant friends’ devices access to selected images, and even use your smartphone to embed GPS information in your shots.

Photo Story mode enables you to capture a scene from multiple viewpoints and then combine them into a single image to create unique collages inside the camera. New "Photo Story+" adds a rich variety of stamps and "Signature" for adding a handwritten or original image signature on top of the image through the Oi.Share app. Other creative features include new interval shooting that sets a time interval between 1 second to 24 hours, as well as how many shots the camera will capture in a series (1 to 99) during that time to create images that show the growth of a plant, the drifting of clouds, moving crowds or a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. Time Lapse Movie converts the series of pictures taken using interval shooting into a movie inside the camera. The 12 available Art Filters on the E-P5 lend even more creativity to time-lapse movies as well as still images. Live Bulb mode has been improved by automatically reducing the monitor's brightness to prevent glare and to display a histogram and the elapsed time of an exposure to more easily shoot stars, light painting and fireworks.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is equipped with a bright and viewable 1.04 million dot high-definition tilt-type touch panel LCD that can be adjusted to face upwards at an 80-degree angle and downwards at a 50-degree angle. For photographers who prefer composing their shots using an eyepiece, the new optional high-definition VF-4 viewfinder, provides an impressive 1.48X magnification, a 2.36 million dot LCD, eye detect to turn it on at the right time, and intuitive functionality that enable real-time viewing of shooting conditions.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is compatible with the whole Micro Four Thirds range on quality lenses, which now extends to newly introduced black versions of the M.ZUIKO® DIGITAL 17mm f1.8, 45mm f1.8 and 75mm f1.8 lenses.

U.S. Pricing and Availability

Several websites have published Q&A sections to clear all the "misunderstandings" about moving Photoshop CC to a cloud based subscription - see some of the posts by Adobe, Engadget, Dpreview and Scott Kelby. No matter what others are saying, Adobe is taking away an option that you previously had: buy a stand alone version or sign up for monthly subscription. This option will no longer be available after the company stops updating ACR. Even if I decide to never update to a new version of Photoshop, I still have the ability to edit all digital images I took in the past decade. Once you move to a monthly subscription and you stop paying few years down the line, you no longer have a way to use the tool. I personally will be sticking with CS6 for as long as I can and see how this whole thing will play out in the next 2-3 years.

If you believe in online petitions (I don't), change.org is currently collecting signatures to eliminate the mandatory "creative cloud" subscription model.

Q: What if I use Photoshop and Lightroom?
A: Currently, your best option is the Creative Cloud single-app membership for Photoshop CC and you can purchase Lightroom separately as a perpetual software license. We’ve heard there’s a lot of interest in a photographer’s bundle or photography cloud solution and we’re actively exploring offerings we can potentially create for you. We welcome your feedback around what you would like to see that fits your workflow needs.

Today's guest post by J Shin will tell you about the different equipment relationship types:

In all my visits to photography rumor and review sites, one observation I have made is that a good proportion of "trolling" and "personal attack" comments have to do with people's relationships to their equipment: how often they buy things, what kinds of features they want or don't care about, their triumphs and disappointments with their acquisitions, etc.

The thing is, different people have very different relationships to their equipment, and one way of purchasing or not purchasing, using or not using, complaining or not complaining, is not necessarily superior to another. Think about all the different relationships people have with their romantic partners. Some are long-lasting; some are not. Some are intense; some are not. Some are exclusive, some are not. Some are carefully considered; some are not.

Such is our relationship with photographic equipment.

Here are some basic types of equipment relationships I have noticed, analogized to different types of romantic relationships. Naturally, these types are not all mutually exclusive: a "philanderer" may also be in a stable, monogamous relationship, and anyone can enjoy pornography or punditry. One's relationship tendencies may vary over time and, more importantly, with cash flow. One could be monogamous with a system, but philandering with bodies, lenses, and/or accessories. Most of us are combinations, and have unique features not associated with our "types"; that's certainly true of me.

Needless to say, one's relationship to photographic equipment is not going to be exactly analogous to one's romantic relationships.

What I would ultimately like is for all of us to develop self-awareness, recognize differences, and, in the end, just get along.

Of course, if you think EVF is junk, my gloves are off.

Monogamy

One system, possibly just one body, with few lenses and accessories. Dedicated to a limited range of subjects, or a wide variety of subjects, pushing the limits of each body/lens. Accumulates lenses and accessories gradually over time, if ever. Tends to have lower equipment budget, unless there is a non-monogamous tendency in the lenses and accessories. Probably would have been happy with any system, but feels lucky to have found the right one. Often has an arcane system, and very proud of it. Usually more choosy about equipment, but not necessarily judgmental of others' choices. Sometimes, there is a "growing apart," and a "divorce" occurs, and is quite shaken up about it. Some have good feelings towards their "ex's", and some are quite bitter about them. Can be disdainful of "equipment sluts" and "impulse buys". May have jealousy toward others with "sexier" systems, but does not act on it, and, as a reaction-formation, become very critical of new-fangled features that "nobody needs".

Serial monogamy

One system after another. Massive purchases and massive purges of equipment. One lens for each subject matter. Loves specialized accessories. Obsession with a subject, then moving on to another, often finding their existing system lacking; rather than buying another accessory or giving up on the subject, purges the whole lot. May be dramatic over each "divorce", or very casual about it. Some are always on the lookout for the next love; some are baffled by their inability to commit or find "true love". A lot of regrets about "bad choices" in the past.

Polyamory (open monogamy)

One primary system with a wide ranges of lenses and accessories, with a variety of other, smaller systems. Gets bored just using one body/system, but is largely committed to the primary system. Expert at which system is best for which situation. Pursues a wide range of subjects and techniques. Versatile and proud of it; gets frustrated if a subject cannot be mastered. Reverts to monogamy, or serial monogamy, as one's favorite style develops or limitations arise; often still has the "first love" or "cut my teeth" equipment. Sometimes a "secondary" relationship becomes "primary". Less likely to "divorce" the primary system, but, if necessary, does so with strong feelings. Some tendency to collect, but largely treats any new prospect with considerateness and respect. Often has regrets about "having brought the wrong equipment" to an occasion.

Polygamy

Several primary systems, each system dedicated to a specific purpose, such as "work", "snaps", "art", "travel", etc. No strong preference for one system over another, although there may be a "love of my life" camera that is not necessarily the one that gets used the most. More "professional" attitude of "I know which system to use for this assignment", rather than polyamory-like flexibility and experimentation. Often carries back-up bodies, one that is carefully selected for the occasion. Also some tendency to collect, but largely treats new prospects with critical distance. May have a "philandering" tendency in a specific area, such as family snaps, where one feels more free to experiment.

Philandering

Generally, no commitment to any one system, or may have a "primary" relationship that is somewhat tumultuous. Sometimes buys a large system, sometimes only a lens or two for a system. Constantly buys and sells on eBay. Enjoys the virtue of each system, but also easily disillusioned with a system. A bit of a "conquest" collector, aiming for some goal with each purchase, but then moves on to another interest. Tends to fall for "sexier" features. Often regrets purchases, returns to "primary love" or "previous love", if any, but not for long.

Friends with Benefits

Tends to buy many systems, a few lenses and accessories for each system. Not particularly committed or obsessed with one or the other. Reviews and tests each equipment extensively, but does not necessarily take a lot of photos with each. More interested in the feeling of having a lot of equipment around, or having a good set of options that can meet a wide range of situations. Does not easily "fall in love". Less intense than polygamy or philandering; more casual relationships and more casual attitude about photography as an endeavor.

Pageant judging

Reads a lot of reviews, rumors, and specifications. Thinks a lot about the virtues and shortcomings of each equipment, and is quite knowledgeable, but does not necessarily buy them. Reads a lot of test results, and knows what all the numbers mean and how they would translate to image quality under what circumstances. Can be opinionated on forums about equipment they have never even seen, but often has cogent observations that "lovers" would miss; many do try out equipment at stores or by renting. Often makes provocative demands for features and combinations of features that are "absolutely necessary", although they have no or limited plans for purchase. Can be very critical of manufacturer missteps, but generally kinder to the manufacturer of their "primary" system, if any. May be on the market for a new long-term relationship; public contemplation helps them make good choices.

Pornography

Like beauty pageant judging, but with a lot more intense love-hate, slobbering-anger, and obsession. Does not necessarily comment a lot on forums, but can get very effusive about a new model, or suddenly get very intense, with vitriol toward manufacturers and toward people demanding the "wrong" features. Wants certain equipment desperately, but cannot necessarily afford it; often do not want it in the long run, and may not have the skill to make good use of it. Goes to retail Web sites constantly, checking prices, comparing features and specifications, but not necessarily thoroughly, and can be impulsive. Most likely, in fact, to regret purchases. Daydreams a lot about what one could do with a given equipment. Not particularly loyal to anyone, even if they have a "primary" system or is basically otherwise monogamous. At the same time, pornography can strengthen one's primary relationship, and can be a satisfying outlet that costs little.

Punditry

Does not say much about one's own loves, but is very opinionated about other people's relationships. Not very open or consistent about what one wants. May not even be a photographer; may be a photographer with a lot of experience. Often has depth of knowledge, and makes thought-provoking and valuable comments, but reading the comments does not make it obvious how experienced the person really is; sometimes not even clear if the comment is comedic, sarcastic, or serious. Often develops love-hate relationships with other pundits, and engages in heated exchanges.

I hope this helps you understand yourself and others. I'd love to hear from you, of course, if you are not one of the types listed, or if you object to the characterizations. I do want to remind everyone that not one of these types is better than another. The survival of the human species and of world capitalism depends on diversity, and we all contribute to this each in our own way.

For fairness's sake, I will disclose my relationship type. I am romantically monogamous, but photographically I am basically polyamorous, and indulge in pornography and pageant judging. Leica R used to be my primary system, but we are having a "trial separation" while I give µ43 a good go. Some of the other long-term relationships I have had include: Century Graphic, Olympus Infinity Jr, Retina IIIs, and Olympus XA. I still have very fond feelings about these relationships. Some "trysts" and "one-night stands" have included Minolta manual, Polaroid, Yashica MAT-124, Leica M, Nikon Action Touch, and Retina IIa. (By the way, you can tell I am polyamorous because I clearly and fondly remember each relationship, even with compact cameras; serial monogamists and philanderers typically would not.) For a while I was pornographically obsessed with the "full-frame mirrorless" concept, but this has gone away with my blossoming relationship with an E-PM1.

With my last article on my Leica apostasy, some people complained that I didn't post any photos. I have since joined Flickr, and you can see a few of my photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/94547033@N03/.
